Stellar Wind shipped to Del Mar to prepare for the Grade 1 Clem-

Stellar Wind would improve in her second start back, but enough to
upset Beholder? It was a tall order.

Her rival drew the rail, giving Stellar Wind a tactical edge from
post 2. Sadler instructed Espinoza to keep the pressure on front-
runner Beholder. It was a calculated risk because it was contrary
to Stellar Wind’s normal style. She normally rallied from behind.

It was the right call. Stellar Wind hounded Beholder, engaged her
on the far turn, and inched clear to win by a half-length.

But could Stellar Wind defeat Beholder again two months later at
Santa Anita? It was another tall order.

Stellar Wind picked up four pounds to 125, the co-highweight
with Beholder for the Grade 1 Zenyatta. The race unfolded similarly
to Del Mar. Again, Stellar Wind applied pressure from the outside,
engaged her rival into the far turn, and won by a neck.

The 110 Beyer Speed Figure was a career best for Stellar Wind
and the fastest of 2016 by a filly or mare.

The final start of Stellar Wind’s campaign was the Longines
Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Stellar Wind stood perfectly in the gate, ex-

Up in the announcer’s booth, Larry Collmus went crazy, giving
the folks still out on Hempstead Turnpike a taste of his full-throated
appreciation, as Frosted barreled past the finish line, 14 1/4 lengths
ahead of second-place Anchor Down.

The race was immediately proclaimed one of the greatest Met
Miles in the history of the legendary event. Frosted may not have
carried as much as Devil Diver’s 134 pounds or Forego’s 133. The
field might not have been as deep as the 1965 running, where Gun
Bow beat Chieftain and Affectionately, or in 1990, when Criminal
Type beat Housebuster and Easy Goer. But no one in the crowd
could recall a time when the hallmark event had been won so im-
pressively, with so little apparent effort.

The Met Mile set expectations unreasonably high for any subse-
quent Frosted outings. He was rested, then returned with a busi-
nesslike win in the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, good for another
big payday. But that was his last hurrah. Frosted seemed unin-
spired when he was a narrowly beaten third in the subsequent
Woodward, after which he got a two-month break in competition.

He made his final appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at
Santa Anita, where he was among the trampled by the dominating
performances of Arrogate and California Chrome.

“I feel very fortunate having a filly of that quality,” Eurton said

Lady Aurelia made her racing debut and her only U.S. appear-

value, winning in front-running fashion by 7 1/2 lengths.

From there, it was on to Royal Ascot and the Group 2 Queen Mary
Stakes, and that is where Lady Aurelia grabbed the collective head
of the racing world and shouted, “Look at me!” Lady Aurelia went
straight to the front on her 16 opponents and then left them reeling
late with a burst of speed that carried her to an astonishing seven-
length triumph.

“It was breathtaking from the top,” said Frankie Dettori, who
was aboard Lady Aurelia in all three of her European starts. “For
a winner to spring seven lengths at Royal Ascot is unbelievable.
When I got to the furlong and a half and I asked her to go, she found
another gear. I was completely shocked.”

Lady Aurelia’s blockbuster Queen Mary performance earned her

even if she was still a maiden.
“It’s not out of the question,” Brown added, “that we give her a

surface-switch terms, well, it says a lot.

But first things first. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves,
let’s honor New Money Honey for her 2-year-old campaign of 2016, a
campaign that, while only three starts long, was so compelling that
it made her a finalist for a divisional Eclipse Award.

New Money Honey, bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, was pur-
chased for $450,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale
by racing newcomer Bob Edwards, who, along with wife Kristine
and their three adult children, races in the name of e Five Racing
Thoroughbreds. New Money Honey made her debut on closing day
at Saratoga in a straight maiden turf route. She was sent off as the
9-5 favorite and came from well off the pace to finish second to La
Coronel.

By every measure, New Money Honey’s debut was a solid effort,
but it soon took on an even greater shine when La Coronel came
back to dominate the Grade 3 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes
in a performance so impressive that she was actually sent off as the
favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, despite drawing
a disastrous outside post position.

champion 3-year-old male against two other finalists – Nyquist and
Exaggerator – who won Triple Crown races. His final works at Santa Anita were spectacular. It was clear Ar-
rogate would give California Chrome a run for the money.
In a little more than 6 1/2 months, Arrogate went from an un-
started maiden to winning the country’s richest race. He did more than that, running down California Chrome in the
final yards to complete his dynamic rise to the top. He earned Beyer

3-year-old male champs of the Eclipse Award era who did not race Baffert, preparing for a 4-year-old campaign that, as of early Janu-

of 2000, had a later debut than Arrogate’s April 17. worth $12 million, at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28.

Arrogate – a colt by Unbridled’s Song out of the Distorted Humor – Jay Privman
mare Bubbler, and bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms – was pur-
chased as a yearling for $450,000 by Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Judd-
monte Farms, which re-established a West Coast presence in recent
years after teaming up with trainer Bob Baffert. Arrogate did not
race earlier owing to shin problems; Baffert gave him time to get
through that common hiccup among 2-year-olds. When Arrogate
began serious training in early 2016, “he had completely morphed,”
Baffert said.

He lost his first start, a sprint at Los Alamitos, but after stretch-
ing out around two turns he was unstoppable. Arrogate won a
maiden race at Santa Anita on June 5, then 19 days later won a first-
level allowance. Only two horses faced him in a second-level allow-
ance at Del Mar on Aug. 4, and he won that race comfortably, with
Baffert already declaring before the race that it was a tune-up for
the Travers.

The Travers is when Arrogate announced himself to the nation.
His 13 1/2-length victory under Mike Smith took just 1:59.36, the
fastest 1 1/4 miles in track history at Saratoga, a place that’s been
around a few years.

As with American Pharoah in 2015, Baffert brought Arrogate up

Exaggerator was the only 3-year-old male to win three Grade 1 BarBara D. Livingston

him perform in the best races of the division until his retirement of just two horses to compete in all three legs of the Triple Crown in

2016 DRF/NTRA HORSEPLAYER OF THE YEAR

Paul Matties

As a part of tonight’s festivities, to salute horseplayers HorsepHotos.com/NtrA
throughout North America we recognize Paul Matties of
Ballston Spa, N.Y., with an Eclipse Award and the title of 2016
DRF/NTRA Horseplayer of the Year for capturing the 17th
annual Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping
Championship last January at Treasure Island Las Vegas.

Topping a field of 629 entries, the 46-year-old Matties
amassed a winning score of $399.50 over the three-day tour-
nament from 53 mythical $2 win and place bets. The NHC of-
fered record cash and prizes totaling $2,778,760, and Matties
took home $800,000.

The Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping
Championship is the pinnacle of all tournaments for horse-
players and the culmination of a yearlong series of NTRA-
sanctioned local tournaments conducted by racetracks, ca-
sino race books, off-track betting facilities, and horse racing
and handicapping websites. The NHC has enjoyed tremen-
dous popularity over the past decade. The first NHC in 2000
had a purse of $212,000. The purse of next week’s NHC 18 is
estimated to be $2.5 million, with $800,000 to the winner.

“Horseplayers always think they’re smarter and better
than everybody else, so to beat all the smartest people in the
world, what an honor,” cracked Matties.

The 18th Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicap-
ping Championship, presented by Racetrack Television Net-
work and Treasure Island Las Vegas, will be held Jan. 27-29
at Treasure Island.
