Flying to Korea "The International Teenage Digital Art Competition -2022" offered a chance for the winners to visit Korea. It was a trip organized by the INKO center for the 17 students, selected as the art contestants for the finals which was held in Busan. I am glad to say that I was one among the winners. This was my first time traveling abroad. At the beginning, I was anxious, looking at the unknown faces. Also I had fathomless excitement to spend a few days with all who later became my friends. The most highlighting part of our journey was the first flight from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur as we had to come across turbulence, which indeed added more thrill. Later we boarded our next flight, landed at Incheon airport, Seoul on 6 August and took a bus to reach Busan. All were given accommodation in the Youth hostel of Busan-Arpina. There were 20 members (3 organizers & 17 students.) and three in a room were allotted. I was given a bed near the window. Each day, I used to gaze at the stunning landscape of the busy city. Our final art competition was held on 7th August, with Mongolian and Korean students. Later many programmes were arranged to strengthen the bond between the contestants. We had a tea ceremony (darye), and later a culture exchange programme. First we Indians and Mongols had a chance to wear Korean traditional wear (Hanbook) and we represented our culture. Then we visited many tourist spots. While traveling we looked at the roads and the streets, so well maintained and tidy. The city was so calm. No honking of vehicles, no whizzing of wheels. Tall glass buildings, the big blue ocean and the greenery which surrounded the country gave a pleasant vibe. Beyond the magnificent sites, I admired the warm and kind nature of the people among them. Their hospitality, effortless hard work and punctuality are highly appreciable. I had a pleasant and a joyful stay in South Korea. Every moment was a bundle of excitement and thrill. I could not simply leave that place which I felt so close to my heart, of course next to my country India ! -P GAYATHRI XI B KV CLRI
BEING OPTIMISTIC ⇌ MORE OPPORTUNITIES Pravesh and Pranesh were good friends. They were very good in studies and other co-curricular activities. They both lived in the same apartment. From the childhood, Pravesh had the knack of getting his wishes fulfilled from his parents by his tantrums. Pranesh’s parents were very tough and would grant him permission only when needed and hence he always adjusted himself with what he had. Pravesh boasted about this often to Pranesh and mocked at him about his inability to get things done from his parents. Pravesh never thought that this attitude would land him in trouble in future. In a campus interview, both were rejected by an elite company. Pranesh adjusted to the situation and decided to take the job he got and waited for the right opportunities and later succeeded in it. Since Pravesh could not take the word ‘no’, he went into depression and was under psychiatric supervision and later brought to normal. Now, Pranesh boasted of his parents saying, “if they had succumbed to his tantrums, he would not have been successful in facing challenges”. Hence, success does not lie in “Instant Gratification”, it lies in being optimistic and therefore find more opportunities. -Hariharan Subramanyan 12 B
BEING SPEECHLESS TO A STORY TELLER “Travelling; it makes you speechless and then a storyteller”. It is said to be a quote of Ibn Battuta. And it has made me one too. Let me give you a glimpse into my recent travel to Dharamshala, Himachal Pradhesh, the memories of which I’ll always treasure. Where do I begin? Mountains, pine trees, valleys, gushing waterfalls and its people give a unique feel to the place. Beautiful valleys decked with little houses here and there could be seen while descending a mountain. Pine trees adorned the mountains from its top to its foot and the mists only added to the breath-taking scene. And one could vaguely make out snow-capped mountains in the horizon against the mist, standing tall in full magnificence. But what enthralled me the most were the buzzing markets and lively people of the McLeod Ganj near Dharmshala. My acquaintance with Tibetan culture had started off when attending a prayer meeting conducted by the Dalai Lama while I was still a primary school kid. Though I had heard about Tibet then, little did I know about its history and significance. McLeod Ganj was named after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, a Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. The place acquired an international stature when the Indian Government in 1959 granted political asylum to the 14th Dalai Lama, who is considered by his people as the reincarnation of Buddha, and permitted to establish a Tibetan Government-in-exile when the Chinese invaded Tibet. Tens of thousands of Tibetans had to come to India as refugees. Mc Leod Ganj has now become home to a large Tibetan population. Scores of tourists and locals flitted in and out of stalls, checking out artefacts. Streets were decked with a seemingly unending line of stalls. Just walking down the road, and looking at the little statues and paintings gives immense pleasure. One cannot resist from buying anything though. From colourful dream catchers to Tibetan necklaces, Tibetan prayer flags to eye-catching handicrafts. Growing up amongst Dosas, idlis and puttu, the Tibetan cuisine was a gastronomic experience to me.
Along the shopping streets, were little momo stalls where people stood around with fresh momos piling up on their plate, as they ate. I suddenly transformed into the ‘Kungfu Panda’ with those momos stuffed in my mouth. The puffy steamed rolls/bread ‘tingmo’ were as emotionless as some of the cine actors but became expressive when dipped in the stew. The warm noodle soups ‘Thukpa’ and ‘Thenthuk’ pushed me into a meditative mode. There was just something soothing about that in the cold October night. I could feel the warmth seeping into my bones. Mc Leod Ganj is a place which beams with maroon robed Buddhist monks, devotees and travellers. Some of the foreign travellers reminded me of the ‘Hippies’ I had read about. Walking down the market, I reached the Namgyal Monastery also known as the “Dalai Lama’s Temple” which is also where the current Dalai Lama resides. The booming sound of monks chanting could be heard even before entering the temple complex. A flight of stairs led to the prayer hall. With each step I took, I could feel the voices of hundreds of monks reverberating. On reaching the giant prayer hall, I was hit with a sense of awe. The unique harmonic throat singing by the monks create vibrations in one’s body. It sounds somewhere between a humming and a deep growl. At that moment, I could feel my body and soul become one. A giant idol of the Buddha was placed on a high platform where one would also find an odd assortment of offerings. Devotees were seen offering their prayers in front of the statue. I went near the statue and checked out the items and found myself staring at a mini snacks bar. From choco pies to cookies, tiger biscuits to luxury chocolates, it had everything. I looked at Buddha and imagined him munching on the goodies. All spirituality gone for a moment, I became the regular greedy school kid that I was. Visitors were served with butter tea and snacks. When it was time to leave, I knew I would remember this experience for ever. On the last day of our stay, we took the newly inaugurated 1.8 kilometre ropeway from Mc Leod Ganj to Dharamshala; the distance by road being 10 km. The descend was amazing, from where I got a glimpse of the local people’s lives. All too soon, I was back home. But looking out of the window, I could still hear the faint echoes of the Tibetan Horn… - By Jahnavi Ranjith XI C KV CLRI
Yet to go... For a brief moment, I wasn’t aware. It was all over. The sky became peach and dull. The air became quiet and still. The bell rang for the last time. Looking back at the paradise, millions of nostalgias blurred my vision. The heat on our benches, still so warm. Our desolate classroom, so quiet and calm. The scribbles on the blackboard, not yet erased. Scribbled them in a mood called craze. The screechy door called for us. The noisy fan laughed at us. Once upon a time, it was a starting. The picture of us entering the stone building with tears still afresh in mind. Leaving back with tears, but not the same. Those days when our smiles were true, when we knew nothing of pain. Now it’s all pain. The chatting and cheating should’ve lasted a bit longer. Though we know it’s an endless wish. “Wassup dude? Feeling emotional? I smile at your fragile smile, but we know that they’re fake. A pint of tear in the corner of our eyes. A sample of smile in the corner of our lips. We’ve come to an end. The basketball court, now empty. Those poles waiting for our sights. That bench over there, cold and sore. Alone…. The ground which was rolling with dust, now without life. The last bench where we exchanged titbits, now tasted peace. Never knew the end would meet us so close. So many years together, but the moment lasts a second. It too would become past later. Teachers smile at us. They too wave a hand of breakup, but with their blessings. It is all over. The gap between us classmates widening each moment. Hoping that the string of connection wouldn’t break with a pop. This void in the heart wouldn’t fill. The lump in the throat wouldn’t melt. The broken mirror reflected out own past. The selfies and poses. The dances and laughter. It is all over. The entire place so dull and dim. The compound wall over there wanted us to jump over it, perhaps, it’d be the last time. Peppermints and sweets in pockets, now became a matter of history. Only tube lights lit our classroom, everything else shut down. Not a single soul inside, but we all know, lot of things over there- memories of course. Locked up and left. Childhood and happiness. Quarrels and problems- of course mid-class appetite. It feels imprisoned. The burning candle in the lab, now lit with chillness. Memories melting with wax. The arbour of joy, now set on fire. The corridor being our spectacular watching gallery…
Friends from other classes, they’re leaving too. Those days we escaped classes. We know, this is our big escape. Our biggest gap. The bell rings again, freezing veins for a second. The fear of the thought that these memories would flutter out give me chills. I promise, I’ll never let them fade away. When all is well, I’ll peep through the golden veil of past as it clings to my memory filled with sweetness as warm as honey. The vivid moments fill my heart. The quarrels and fights and arguments and noise are something heavenly but of the past. You kicked me and I pushed you. We made a scene of comedy. We got hurt,… and we laughed together. You wave a hi to me but I know that it’d soon turn into a bye. I always admired you my friends. As I turn around, I see you going farther away…Hope to meet you again. Dedicated to my friends. -K. 59 Music -Through the ages Music is something very beautiful and surreal. It requires no words, yet it carries feelings that cannot be expressed. Music is scientifically defined as the art of arranging sound to create some combination of form, harmony, melody, rhythm or otherwise expressive content. Music is everywhere; it is omnipresent. Often, music is part of most forms of media and serves as a way to catch your eye, or rather, your ear. Music is composed and performed for aesthetic pleasure or for entertainment. It is the spotlight at festivals, orchestra performances, and is also heard in soundtracks to films or video games. It plays a key role in religious rituals, celebrations, and cultural activities in many countries and India is no stranger to these traditions and practices. India has one of the oldest musical traditions in the world. When music was only available through sheet music scores, during the Romantic eras, music lovers would buy the sheet music of their favourite pieces so that they could perform it themselves in the comfort of their home. Skip to the 1980s and digital music in the 1990s, the advent of home tape recorders allowed music enthusiasts to make playlists of their favourite songs and have them on a portable cassette player. The invention of the Internet transformed the experience of music, due to easy access and the vast genres of music at the fingertips of consumers. Social media websites like YouTube and Facebook make it easier for aspiring singers and amateur bands to share videos of their songs and gain popularity. Audiences can also become quasi-performers by participating in karaoke, an activity of Japanese origin centered on a device that plays voice-eliminated versions of songs. Music is not only treated as a form of entertainment but also as a method to help people, in the form of therapy. The invigorating effects of music have been in use for hundreds of years. In the 17th century, the scholar Robert Burton noted that music has an "excellent power to expel diseases". In the 10th century, the philosopher Al-Farabi described how music can stimulate the feelings and souls of listeners. Music has long been used to help people deal with their emotions. Music therapy is a process in which a trained therapist uses music and all of its facets to help clients to improve or maintain their health. It is used to build self-esteem, reduce stress and support physical exercises. Music therapists encourage clients to sing, play instruments or create songs. -R Upasana XII A KV CLRI

LACK OF MORAL VALUES IN TODAY’S GENERATION What is the situation of today’s generation? As wise men have rightly stated: -‘Houses have become bigger but families living in it have become smaller’. -‘Standard of education has come up but common sense has gone down’. -‘Man has touched the moon but his immediate neighbours are unknown to him’. -‘Income has increased but peace of mind has decreased’. And finally, there are lots of human beings yet there’s less ‘humanity’. This is the reality of the present world. What is the biggest problem faced by today’s generations? Is it poverty? Is it lack of education? Is it terrorism? The answer is none of these: the biggest problem faced by today’s generation is lack of humanity, lack of moral values, lack of love and respect to one another. Mother Theresa aptly quoted ‘If you want to establish peace in the world, go home and love your family’. Man is confined to himself. The concept of my life, my rules have emerged. As a result, whatever Man does is to impress others. He wants the world to think that he is the greatest and none can defeat him. He is not ready to accept his own mistakes, which leads to jealousy and hatred. Let me narrate to you about a true incident that took place in 1936 Olympic Games. Jesse Owens, an American Black and Lutz Long, a German participated in the Long Jump event. Jesse Owens could not qualify in two of his attempts. Lutz Long pointed out Owens his mistake and told him to start running from another point. By doing so, he qualified for his 3rd and final attempt. And what happened in the finals was Jesse Owens won the gold medal and Lutz Long the Silver medal. Jesse also won gold in 100 m and 200 m events. Long was the first one to go out and congratulate Jesse on his victory. At the awards ceremony Owens said ‘You could melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn't be a plating on the 24-carat friendship I felt for Long at that moment.’ This is what is called humanity. Happiness is in giving and sharing, not in keeping things to oneself. Let's try to find true happiness by helping others try to solve their problems and showing that we care for them. By doing so, we will realize that our problems have become smaller and our hearts have become lighter. Dr. Pratima Gupta PGT Hindi

THE JOURNEY IN KVS EXPRESS Reminiscing my travel in this express for 35 long years brings cheer, excitement and gratitude. From being a young town lass to a matured individual, this journey has given me a lot of good experience in my life. Major part of my life has been spent in KVS at different schools with different sets of brilliant children who have taught me many lessons of life. Starting my journey as a primary teacher in KV, AFS Sulur, a timid woman of 23 years I had fun and amusement in most of my classes. Handling them at different precarious situations I learnt the art of tackling them . Let me share one incident. When I was the class teacher of 1st standard , a naughty boy pierced a small piece of rubber deeply inside his nostril. It created panic for everyone, the maximum for me as I was the class teacher. Two senior teachers took the boy and handled him gently by closing the other nostril and asked him to blow out the particle from the affected nostril. This taught me to remain cool in times of panic situations. Also I was able to handle things. Kids taught me to learn Hindi language. Mathematical ability improved by preparing for Math classes as a primary teacher. I enhanced my Music talent by teaching them group songs for CCA competitions.
