of the North and the South Lipez, especially the Salar and ©Bastian Müller

most visited places.
 
Private and shared tours of usually three days/two nights
in 4WD vehicles, leave Uyuni - the regions transport hub
- daily to explore the impressive sights of this region.
Accommodation outside Uyuni is in general rather basic,
but efforts were undertaken in the last years to improve
this situation in cooperation with the local communities.
This is the case of the three Tayka Hotels, within strategic
parts of the regions, which now offer the highest standard
in lodging beside the classic Salt Hotels at the shore of
the Salt Lake. And a tour package called “Ruta Tayka”
which connects the different hotels of the chain. This tour
combines the regions gems with its hidden secrets, and
offers social encounters and interesting possibilities such
as the option to herd a flock of llamas.
 
The first and most important stop on a tourist circuit
outside Uyuni is the Salar! This overwhelming desert of
salt, with its more than 12.000 km² of surface, and 3656
meters over sea level, presents a flat salt crust which gets
lost on the horizon. And in the middle of this huge plain
is the Isla Incahuasi with its centuries old cacti, up to 12
metres high. Here is where in the rainy season, between
December and May, the sky connects with the land, like a
message of boundlessness, totality and union...
 
Towards the south, the little known Bolivian desert
presents itself with a surprise of colour and wildlife.

sand, stones, of different colours of white, reds, oranges,
ochres and beiges were created over millions of years

impossible to equal.
 
You pass the belt of multi-coloured lagoons - Cañapa,
Hedionda, Chiarkota, Honda and Ramaditas - which give
colour to the desert, and where you enter into the heart
of the regions National Reserve, the Laguna Colorada
Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary surrounds the largest
of the region’s multi-coloured lagoons. Algae growing in
the water dye it a vivid blood red, which is contrasted with
bone white islands made of the mineral borax. Owing to
its height at 4,278m above sea level and the surrounding
landscapes of desert and salt, very little wildlife can be
found here for most of the year. In November, however,
flocks of three different species of flamingo make it their
home for the breeding season.
 
Further to the south the Geyser of “Sol de Mañana”,
at almost 5000m over sea level, is a unworldly
place especially in the morning hours when the low
temperatures make the spectacle even more visible. And
who does not want to imagine a hot bath in the nearby
natural thermal springs of Polques - the next relaxing
stop on route - to warm up from the cold morning
temperatures and to watch the flamingos in proximity –
a natural ambience of singular beauty.
 
Last stop on the tourist route towards the southernmost
tip of the country is the green Laguna Verde, situated
at the foot of the spectacularly symmetrical Licancabur
volcano. Deriving its colour from arsenic mineral deposits
in the water, and changing it colour with the wind later in
the morning, makes it the regions brightly shining pearl.
 
The sightseeing trip ends here at the Laguna Verde for
most of the package tours. There is a connection to
Chile´s San Pedro de Atacama via the border post of Hito
Cajon. Other options include another overnight stay in
the region to reach Tupiza on a fourth day in the south
west of Bolivia, or a return to Uyuni for connections to
the rest of the country.

San Ignacio de Loyola fue fundada en 1748 por los
Padres Miguel Streicher y Diego Contreras, quienes
reconciliando a las tribus de los Zamucos y Ugarones
fundaron la Misión ubicada a ocho leguas al norte de
la Misión San Miguel Arcangel. Este fue el punto de
partida de la Iglesia más grande y ostentosa de toda la
Chiquitania. El Padre Martin Schmid diseñó el retablo
de su templo que tuvo fama de ser el más hermoso de
los retablos de la región. Hoy llamada San Ignacio de
Velasco, con más de 50.000 habitantes en la capital de
la Provincia Velasco.

La Misión de Santa Ana de Chiquitos, hoy de Velasco,
fue fundada en el año 1755 por el Padre Julián Knogler,
con parte de los pobladores de la Misión San Rafael
Arcangel. Forma parte del municipio de San Ignacio de
Velasco. En el año 1830 fue capital de la provincia con
4.000 habitantes. Se encuentra a 45km. de San Ignacio
de Velasco. El hechizo de sus leyendas, tradiciones
culturales, y el encanto de su Iglesia, le dan a Santa Ana
una magia especial que cautiva a todos quienes la visitan.

San Ignacio de Loyola was founded in 1748 by the priests
Michael Streicher and Diego Contreras after reconciling
the Zamucos and Ugarones tribes. The mission is located
44km. north of the mission of San Miguel Archangel.
It was the starting point for the building of the biggest
Church of the Chiquitania. The pries Martin Schmid
designed the altar of the temple wich was reputed to
be the most beautiful in the region. Today known as
San Ignacio de Velasco with 50.000 inhabitants, it is the
capital of the Province Velasco.

The Mission of Santa Ana de Chiquitos, of Velasco was
founded in 1755 by the priest Julian Knogler, with some
of the residents of the Mission of San Rafael Archangel.
It is now part of the municipality of San Ignacio de
Velasco. In 1830 it was the capital of the Province with
4,000 inhabitants. It is located 45km. from San Ignacio of
Velasco. Its legends, cultural traditions and the beauty of
its church gives Santa Ana a special magic that captivates
all who visit.
