Appendix 6 Glossary of term relating to bottles wine and vintners kick-up: bottle the indentation in the bottom of the metal: the glass from which the bottle is made pontil: the mark left on the bottom of the bottle where the pontil rod was attached, often rough glass pontil rod: The rod which is attached to the bottom of the bottle allowing the bottle to be held while the string rim and neck are finished String-rim: a collar of glass wound around the neck of the bottle originally allowing a cork or packing material to be tied down with string pipe( of wine): a large barrel of wine containing between 105 and 120 gallons of wine hogshead: half a pipe drawer: the man servant in the tavern who fetched the wine from the cellar fine: this was a fee paid to the Oxford city council to renew the wine licence. These licences were generally renewed when they had some years to run as the annual rental did not reflect the value of the licence. Tavern: an establishment licensed to retail wine Inn/Alehouse: an establishment selling beer and ale not licensed to retail wine Vintner: an individual licensed to retail wine who had either served as an apprentice for 7 years or who was a privileged person Wine licence: a licence issued either by the city council or by the university permitting a person to retail wine. 210
