Supplement to The Chemist and Druggist, January 15, 1883.

FOULKES' CE ME NT

AS USED IN ALL THE GOVERNMENT MUSEUMS.

This Cement has obtained a reputation unequalled by any other for repairing G-Jass,
China, Earthenware of all kinds, Wood, Ivory, Leather, Marble, Cardboard, and Inlaid
Work, Papier Mache, Fossils, Jewellery, Children's Toys, Fastening the Tips of Billiard
Cues, and every description of Fancy Work; the articles repaired will bear washing

in boiling water.

ITS PRINCIPAL FEATURES ARE —

1. GREAT TENACITY. 4. TRANSPARENCY" AND NEATNESS IN USE,

2. EAST MODE OF APPLICATION. together with its GENERAL APPLICABILITY,

3. FREEDOM FROM UN PLEAS 4 NT SMELL. as it may be used to almost every Material.

—A FEW OF THE USES TO WHICH IT MAY BE APPLIED:

The repairs of every description of Household Glass and Earthenware, Glass-shades, Chimney Orna-
ments, Pieces of Veneer, the Binding of Books, Chippings of Furniture, Picture Frames, Mounting
Prints, Marble and Alabaster Goods, Fossils, Ornaments in Ivory and Bone, Vases, and Pendants. Costly
wares, Ancient and Modern that cannot be replaced, may with this Cement he renewed, however much broken.

The following TESTIMONIALS, epitomised for want of space, have been selected from amongst a large number of eminent

—Scientific Gentlemen, who have kmdly allowed their names to be published as using and recommending it :
BRETT, —Professor
Ph.D., E.L.S., &c., Lecturer on Chemistry, &c, at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary. " I have never met with

anything like it as regards tenacity."
WOODWARD, —J. P.
Esq., Superintendent Geological Department, British Museum. "It answers capitally for mending fossil

bones, and in all cases where it is desirable thnt the things stuck together should not come apart again. About six weeks ago I mended

mya bell-glass with it experimentally, expecting that the heat of the lamp would soon cause it to fall apart, but hopes have been
—disappointed the broken glass has defied both lire and water.''

JOHNGeneral SIR GEORGE,ST. K.C.B., Director of Ordnance, Woolwich.—" I know of no other Cement at all equal to it."

ARCHER, —Professor
Edinburgh. " I can testify most unhesitatingly to its great utility in the various occasions which continually

arise in Museum work for a first-rate cement. I have invariably found yours superior to all others, and have extensively recommended

myits u e to all friends."

—W. THOMSON", Esq., Superintendent Natural History Department, Crystal Palace, Sydenham. "I know of no kind more

generally useful and more readily manageable than yours."
HANSON, —Captain
Cork. " I have now no hesitation in expressing my opinion that a better Cement cannot be made."

MERVYN RICHARDSON, —Captain
Rock Ferry. " I believe that 1 was the first to discover the great excellence of your

Cement in its application to fix on the leather tips to Billiard Cues. It was your own Cement also which has been introduced by me at

Croxteth Hall, and so much praised by the late Lord Sefton. I recommend its exclusive use in every Billiard Room, and shall continue

to do so, so long as I find ils virtues unimpaired."

MACKEI,Extract from a treatise " On Cements, Indurating Compositions, and Artificial Stone," by B. J. E<q., of the "Official
— MyReview." " . . .
readers will see, by referring to the foregoing list of recipes, that Foulkes' Cement does as much as all the others put

together, and in a far more efficient manner. Of course, the mode and principle of manufacture of this cement are a secret, and the

proprietors are jealously careful that it shall remain so ; but its chemical constituents must be numerous, and of that class that fill up

the minutest pores and irregularities in the materials named, by affinity or simple cohesion. Foulkes' Cement must bi of such a character

as largely to shut out the air under the surface to which it is applied, and so to get perfect pneumatic power by a gelatinous cohesion of

the finest particles. It is also easy of application, has no unpleasant smell, and is transparent. All speak highly of its value, in anatomy

and natural history museums, for the repair of fractures ; in geological museums, for mending fossil bones, &c. ; in infirmaries, for

mechanical and surgical vessels ; in households, to repair the casualties of housemaids and 'pussies'; and in billiard rooms, to fasten

myon the leather tips to 'cues.' Two of friends, analytical chemists, who have used it for repairing their apparatus, have frequently

had occasion to subject the mended articles to a high degree of temperature, nearly approaching to a red heat, and have invariably found

the cement to withstand the test admirably, thus enabling these gentlemen to employ apparatus which otherwise would have been useless."

Sold in bottles at 6d. and Is. (equal to three of the small), and in larger bottles at Is. 6d. and 2s. 6d.
also in cases, containing large bottle with glass cap, and requiring no cork, with brush, 3s. 6d. each.

PREPARED ONLY BY THE INVENTOR,

W. J. FOULKES, PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMIST, BIRKENHEAD,

And sold by all respectable Chemists, Patent Medicine Vendors, and Bazaars in Town and

Country, and in the principal Cities of the World.

The success that has attended the introduction of this Cement has occasioned a host of imitations, under a
variety of names. The public are therefore respectfully requested to observe that what they purchase has

a facsimile of the Proprietor's signatui'e across the outside label, to imitate which is felony.

FOU LK ES' TO I LET & N U RSE RY POWDER.

IMPALPABLE AND DELICATELY PERFUMED,
Possessing1 the Emollient IPi-opevties of Fuller's Earth, entirely void

of colour, and in :i high state of parity.

This Powder is perfectly harmless, possesses in an eminent degree soothing and healing qualities, and when applied to

the skin forms a beautifully soft, smooth, and ivory surface. For infants and others suffering from abrasion or redness of
the skin, for the toilet as a cosmetic, and for the use of bed-ridden invalids, it stands without a rival.

It will be found superior even to the most costly kinds (some of which are of, a very questionable character)
for improving, beautifying, and preserving the skin. It speedily removes redness, sunburns, and the effects of cold
winds, and by its soothing properties quickly allays irritation or uncomfortable feeling, whether produced from atmospheric
or any other cause, while its simple and delicate fragrance will commend it to all.

Unlike Starch, which in various guises forms the "Violet Powder" of commerce, this preparation absorbs
without caking, and remains unchanged by both heat and moisture; therefore, to the tender skin of infants it is
peculiarly beneficial and perfectly innocuous. By its use all abrasion or chafing is prevented, and the action of any
acrid humour or secretion at once neutralised.

In producing this Powder recourse has been had to the opinions of several of the leading Members of the Medical
Profession, as well as some eminent scientific Chemists. Fuller's Earth has been taken as a basis, and the Powder now
offered is the result of much study and anxious investigation. It is uniformly prepared with the most scrupulous attention

—to the objects it has to fulfil, and neither cost or trouble has been spared to make it what it now is the finest Skin

Powder extant.

Sold in Boxes at Is., and in Packets at 6d. each.

From the Late Dr. BRETT.

" I have, at the request of Mr. W. Foulkes, submitted to a qualitative chemical examination his Toilet and

Nursery Powder, and find it to be free from any 'ingredient in the slightest degree calculated to irritate the

most delicate skin. I am decidedly of opinion that it is extremely well calculated to fulfil the objects for which

it is recommended. " B. H. BRETT, Ph.D., M.B.C.S.,

&c" Formerly Lecturer on Chemistry, at the Liverpool Royal

Infirmary School of Medicine."

From A. NORMAN TATE, Esq., F.I.C.

" I have very carefully examined specimens of " Foulkes' Toilet and Nursery Powder." Its chemical compo-

sition is such as to fit it admirably for the purposes for which it is intended; many of the powders sold for like

use are very liable to change or decomposition when in contact with the secretions from the skin, and conse-

quently often produce injurious results. This Powder is entirely free from this objectionable quality, and the

very carelul mechanical treatment to which it evidently has been subjected in reducing to such fine impalpable
" A. NORMAN TATE, F.I.C.,
powder still further enhances its suitability.

"Analytical Laboratory and School of Technical Chemistry, "Analjtical Chemist.

7, 9, and 11 Hackins Hey, Liverpool."

A Recent Opinion as to the Merits of this favourite Powder.

. "As regards the proper form of dusting powder we have numerous kinds in vogue, such as Violet

Powders, fine Starch, Native Carbonate of Zinc, and Puller's Earth. On the whole there is nothing better in our

estimation than Mr. Foulkes' (of Birkenhead) Toilet and Nursery Powder. It is an impalpable, pure emollient
Weand elegant dusting powder, and safer in its use than the preparation of Zinc, &c.
recommend it in prefer-

ence to all others."

Extracted from a work, page 11, entitled,

"THE CHILD, AND HOW TO NURSE IT."

by Dr. ALEXANDER MILNE, of Edinburgh, M.D , L.R.C.P. and S., Member of the Gynaecological Society of Berlin and of Boston ; Ex. Vice-President

of the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society ; Author of a work on Midwifery and Diseases of Women, Materia Medica, and various other important works

NOTICE TO MERCHANTS, SHIPPERS, AND DEALERS.

HE great reputation acquired by Rimmel's Perfumery in all the Markets of the "World is due to several causes Thf

Wmmm first is the unceasing and scrupulous attention paid by E. Rimmel to the selection and preparation of its ingredients
which causes it to retain its excellent quality for a very long time in the most trying climate ; the second is the fact thai
he is the onVy manufacturing perfumer possessing a factory in Paris as well as in London, thus uniting French eleganc«
to English soundness, and also a distillery at Nice where the aroma is extracted from freshly gathered flowers by a process
of his own invention ; the third is that his long experience (inherited from his father who founded the house nearly fiftj

years ago) and his extensive connections, enable him to procure his materials on most advantageous terms and consequently

to sell a thoroughly gosd article at a price generally charged for an inferior one. It results from the foregoing that Rimmel's Perfumerj

forms an extremely safe and profitable investment to Merchants, Shippers, and Dealers, who can procure wholesale illustrated price lists

on application to the Head Establishment, No. 96, Strand, London, the prices mentioned in the following pages, being the retail ones,

fUMMEL'S AR OZONIZER,

A NATURAL AIR PURIFIER.

oducing by simple slow evaporation, the fragrant, reviving and health-giving emanat ions of the Pine and Eucalyptus

A natural instirct prompts us to dislike fetid smells, which are generally poisonous, and to enjoy the sweet and refreshing

ours of flowers and plants. It will occur to every reflective mind that Nature has not misled us in this instance, but has in

Lny cases placed the antidote by the side of the poison, in endowing certain subjects of the vegetable kingdom with the mission

air purifiers. Some, however, possess this property to a much greater extent than others ; the plants of the labiate order,

|

instance, such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, rue, &c, have long been esteemed for their antiseptic qualities, and the old

atom still remains of strewing rue before the magisterial bench at the sessions as a protection against jail fever ; their merita
(wever, are now somewhat eclipsed by the recent discovery of the wonderful virtues of the Eucalyptus.

The sanitary properties of that tree have been fully tested and established by M. Pepin, Dr. Carlotti, Dr. Lorinser, Dr. Sicard,
. Triatani, Professor Gubler, Dr. Keller, Dr. Maclean, Dr. Gimbert, Dr. Day (of Geelong), and other eminent practitioners,
3 as stated in the annexe4 analysis of Dr. Hassall, these properties chiefly reside in its leaves, which emit a quantity of ozone,

) best air-purifier.

The soothing and beneficial effects produced on the respiratory organs by the emanations of the pine and most of the coni-

eus trees have also been long known, and at Arcachon, Bournemouth, and other places, consumptive patients are sent to inhale
) invigorating breezes of the pine woods, which bring them immediate relief.

Those well-established facts have given E. Eimmel the idea of concentrating in a simple and convenient form the active
nciples of the Eucalyptus and Pine, so that by slow evaporation they may generate in dwellings precisely the same atmosphere

kt would be breathed in a forest of those trees ; the flattering reports received from all sides since offering his invention to the
blic lead him to hope he has succeeded.

Eimmel's Ozonizer possesses the undeniable advantage of emitting a delicious and refreshing fragrance which cannot affect
most nervous or delicate persons, whilst nearly all other disinfectants have a nauseous and irritating odour. As to its
[ciency, it is equally undoubtable, for the ozone it develops in the atmosphere not only covers but destroys all foul air and

[pleasant smells.

Its applications are almost endless it is not only invaluable in private dwellings, hotels, clubs, ofiices, &c, but it will be
;

und a great boon in saloons and cabins of ships, whence it removes sickening effluvia, also in hospitals, law-courts, sc'iool-rooms,

eatres, halls, and all other places of public resort, where the air becomes vitiated by a great concourse of people. It is specially

commended for the nursery, as its emanations are highly beneficial for the respiratory organs of ehildren.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE,

Spread from one to three tablespoonfuls of this powder on a saucer or plate, according to the size of the place, and simply
.ve it exposed. Stir it up every morning, and renew it entirely every two or three days. Keep the tin well closed, and in a

MEDICAL REPORTS AND TESTIMONIALS.

Dr. HASSAL'S REPORT.

THE ANALYTICAL SANITARY INSTITUTE,

54, Holboon Viaduct, London, December 21st, 1877.
" I have carefully examined and tested samples of Mr. Rimmel's Aromatic Ozonizer.
The solid basis of the preparation consists of particles of pine, cedar, and other coniferous woods, impregnated with a
mixture of volatile aromatic oils, of which that of the Eucalyptus tree is the most important.
The powerful disinfectant and salubrious properties of Eucalyptus have long been known, and it is also undoubted that the
tree derives its virtues from the volatile oil, which is secreted by the leaves in considerable proportion, and which, when diffused

through the atmosphere, generates a notable quantity of 020ns, the most efficient and strongest atmospheric purifier. I have'
readily succeeded in detecting Ozone in the air of a room in which some of Mr. Rimmel's preparation had been exposed.

The ' Ozonizer ' acts as an aerial disinfectant, absorbing foul and polluted: and replacing it by cool, healthy and fragrant

breezes.

I consider that Mr. Rimmel's preparation will be of great value to the Public at large, on account of its efficiency, of its
pleasant and reviving aroma, which must please even the most fastidious, and of its simplicity of application, which requires
neither skill nor care.

A more effective and agreeable disinfectant ha3 never been produced."
ARTHUR HILL HASSAL, M.D., Lond.,

Author of " Food, and its Adulteration," Sec.

Extract from Mr. Wentworth Lascelles Scott's Report.

ANALYTICAL LABORATORIES, London and Wolverhampton, Sept. 10th, 1881.

Refreshing and beneficial for use in sleeping apartments as an air purifier and harmless to children and domestic animals,
Rammers Ozonizer exerts a tonic influence upon the lower forms of life and may thus be employed advantageously as an insecticide.'

WENTWORTH LASCELLES SCOTT,

\

Chemical and Microscopical Analyst, Lecturer on Chemistry and Physics, SfC, %t.

From Dr. A. VINTRA.S, FRENCH HOSPITAL & DISPENSARY, 10, Leicester Square, London ; Nov. 23rd, 1831.

" I have much pleasure in certifying that Mr. E. Rimmel's ' Aromatic Ozonizer ' has been in use for a long time at the

French Hospital with the best results. It not only completely removes all bad smells but has proved most pleasant and

refreshing to the patients.

I am confident that it will be found very valuable also for private sick-rooms, children's dormitories, schools, or anyi

establishment where there is an agglomeration of persons."

From Mr. W. SHOOLBRED, Secy., CHARING CROSS HOSPITAL, London, "VV.O, Dec. 8th, 1881. I

" Since first supplied in 1878 it ha* proved, as a disinfectant, most pleasant and effective, and the reports by members of the

Professional and Nursery Staff, only corroborate the good opinion first formed of its good qualities."

From Dr. D. S. BROWN, L.R.C.A.I., Londonderry.

" I have tried Rimmel's Aromatic Ozonizer in sick rooms, where Condy's Fluid and Chloride of Lime have failed. In every;

ease the disagreeable and polluted atmosphere was replaced by a most pleasant and healthy aroma.

I consider the ' Ozonizer ' a most useful, effective and refreshing disinfectant."

From Mr. E. P. MADDICK, Surgeon, Steamship " German."

" I had good opportunities of trying your ' Aromatic Ozonizer ' on my way to youth Africa, and found it to be most,

mybeneficial to patients. Those who have travelled much by sea know what smells arise from a number of cabins occupied by

ABea-sick passengers. little of the ' Ozonizer ' placed on the floor of the cabin (under the carpet) is sufficient to kill any smell,

and is not only most comforting to the occupants of the cabin but most beneficial to the health generally of crew and passengers.

I strongly advise all who travel by sea to provide themselves with it. I myself shall not go to sea again without asking you for

ome."

From Mr. W. JONES, Medical Officer, Strand Union Workhouse, Edmonton^

I have used your " Aromatic Ozonizer" in the sick and bed-ridden wards of the above Institution, and found it to replaofl'

the disagreeable and polluted atmosphere by a healthy and fragrant aroma. It acts as a disinfectant and is most refreshing to

the patients. It far excels my expectations before trial. From Mr. HENRY NEVILLE, Olympic Theatre.

" I have been using your Aromatic Ozonizer for some time past at my Theatre with thorough satisfaction. The fragrance'

it diffuses throughout the house is very pleasant and refreshing, and far superior to any disinfectant I know."

—From the Morning Advertiser, Report of the Licensed Victuallers' Ball. St. James's Hall.

*' Upon entering the ball-room we experienced the pleasing influence of a delightful odour which completely perfumed the,

splendid chamber in which the opening quadrille was being danced. Upon enquiry, we ascertained that the odoriferous exhala«

tions resulted from the ' Aromatic Ozonizer,' invented by Eugene Rimmel, the well-known perfumer."

From Mr. J. SHAW, South Eastern Railway, London Bridge Station.

" Cur Steam Packet Superintendent reports favourably upon the Ozonizer which was sent to him the other day."

From Dr. VEILERE, The English and Continental College, Harrow._

" I have used your ' Aromatic Ozonizer,' for nearly twelve months, and find it very beneficial. I have recommended it to

all my friends, who agree with me as to its great merit. I consider that no household should be without it."

RIMMEL'S AROMATIC OZONIZER is giving great satisfaction at the following and many other places

o other Malt Extract can compare with this in nutritive and starch-converting power,
as confirmed by analyses of eminent Scientists.

No less an authority than the late Baron Justus von Liebig" prescribed barley, and barley alone,

r the manufacture of Malt-Extract, as confirmed by Dr. H. Fehling, in the subjoinod certificate :

" About 20 years ago Justus von Liebig discovered the excellent
" qualities, as a remedy for chest affections, of the sugar produced in

" barley-malt, the so-called ' Sacchamm Hordei ' of the old Pharma-

" copceias. Thereupon, at his request, I induced Mr. Edward Loeflund,
" in the autumn of 1865, to make this preparation on a large scale, for
" which purpose I communicated to him, by Baron Liebig's order, his own
" mode <f procedure. In May, 1866, Von Liebig inspected Mr. Loejiund's
"factory thoroughly, and expressed himself highly satisfied with everything.

" Therefore, according- to Liebig's prescription, Malt

"Extract is to be made only of pure barley-malt.

" Latterly the manufacture has been modified so as to retain in an

" active form the Diastase originally contained in the Malt Extract,

" thus securing the full power of the Diastase to dissolve starch and to
"promote digestion.

" By repeated examinations I have convinced myself that Loefitind's

" Diastase Malt Extract fulfils these requirements in an excellent degree.

THE ONLY I?ERFE CT EIVEIM^ OBTAINABLE.

INGRAM'S IMPROVED HIG6INS0N

ENEMA AND SYRINGE APPARATUS

(BY KOYAL LETTEES PATENT).

Made without Seams or Ribs by our Patent Process of dipping in a solution of India
Rubber, thus adding great strength and durability.

WARRANTED NOT TO SPLIT. A.-Metal Pin Valve.

INGRAM'S IMPROVED PATENT SEAMLESS ENEMA is perfectly smooth on the surface, will ,
;

not become hard or sticky, will not leak, and will not admit air while injecting or refilling. Specially prepared to

resist the heat of tropical countries.

The great superiority of INGRAM'S IMPROVED PATENT SEAMLESS ENEMA over all others

has given rise to various imitations, and it has become imperative that the Patentees should, in order to prevent

deception, explain the process of manufacture of their enema and the mode of manufacture of imitations

thereof, as they have undeniable proof that inferior enemas are positively being sold as their ' ' advertised '

PATENT SEAMLESS ENEMA.

INGRAM'S IMPROVED PATENT SEAMLESS ENEMA is made by a new patent process,

viz. : By repeated dipping in a solution of India Rubber until the required substance is attained. This process adds

greatly to its strength and durability, and, at the same time, dispenses with all seams, which, as is well known,

are weak points in an Enema. This improved mode of manufacture (the result of long study and experience)

enables the Patentees to produce a perfect enema without seams, thus overcoming the great fault to be found in i

all other Enemas, viz. : Splitting and leaking, which has always been a source of trouble.

INGRAM'S IMPROVED PATENT SEAMLESS ENEMA is fitted with improved valves, which

prevent the admission of air with the fluid and can at any time be repaired, if necessary.

CAUTIOKTg-Imitations of INGRAM'S IMPROVED PATENT SEAMLESS!

ENEMA are made of several pieces of Sheet India Rubber, which are cemented together and shaped in

a mould, thus producing ribs on the surface, and enemas so manufactured are always liable to split and
|

LEAK AT THE SEAMS, AND THUS TO BECOME QUITE USELESS. j

INGRAM'S IMPROVED PATENT SEAMLESS ENEMA may be distinguished from alS

imitations by its entire freedom from ribs of any description on its surface, and by having an IMPROVED metal

pin valve at the suction end A ; and it is acknowledged to be the only perfect enema obtainable.

Patented in England, No. 1474, April 12, 1878; in France, No. 126,909, October 11, 1878; and
