Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage. 25

1 City girl Cheryl, 31, never dreamt that she would one day give up her corporate
career to become a volunteer teacher. But that was exactly what happened. Cheryl
was sent to a rural school in Kedah and contributed to her school by establishing a
choral speaking team. The team went on to become a top qualifier at a district-level
choral speaking competition. It was a triumphant moment for the school because it
had never won a prize, let alone make it to a top tier in a competition.

2 “I was a public relations (PR) consultant for four years. During that time, I used to
teach students in Puchong. Then I reached a point where I realised I liked teaching
more than PR so I decided to leave.” In 2013, she joined Teach for Malaysia and
was trained for eight weeks. During her training, she was taught different teaching
strategies like how to engage the students and how to plan and have class games.
Upon completion, Cheryl was then sent to SMK Pinang Tunggal, Kedah.

3 Despite the smaller paycheck after switching careers, Cheryl persevered and went
on to assemble a team of students whom she initially saw as lackluster and polished
their talent through sheer grit. She said the experience was an emotionally charged
and physically draining one as she had to start from scratch to find prospective
students. They had problems with speaking English. There were times my students
would get tired but some of them would persevere. It was difficult. There were
issues with pronunciation too as they were used to conversing in the Kedah dialect.
“The students don’t pronounce the suffix ‘-s’ but English has a lot of that, so that
was my biggest challenge with them, but I trained them continuously even through
the fasting month and it was so tiring. I even encouraged them with motivational
words to stay focused and soldier on, so they would not lose their spirit.”

4 Privately though, Cheryl did consider giving up after having a difficult time
assembling her 35-student team for the competition. Many opted out owing to lack
of confidence and attendance was just too poor to begin practice. Refusing to give
up, she put her foot down and gave an ultimatum to her students. “There was

152

another teacher who did it with me. We reached a point where we thought we didn’t

want to do it because attendance was discouraging, and the students were dropping

out. So, I called them and reminded them the reasons they joined the competition. It 30

was then they felt inspired to finish what they started. I had no choice but to tough it

out because I felt that they can ace this competition. But they need to realise it
themselves too. I couldn’t get that message across easily. I too got emotional at

times,” she added.

5

The team was made up of students from Form One up to Form 5, some of whom 35

hail from rural villages and had no transportation to and from the choral speaking

practice sessions. But Cheryl volunteered to chauffeur some of the students to

motivate them to turn up. There was also the regular food and drinks which she

would supply on days where the practice took a long time. This also took a hit on
Cheryl’s monthly wage of RM2,000. Nevertheless, it gave her much satisfaction.

6 40
“One of the ways I motivated my team was I told them that no one is going to look at

them at the competition as we were going up against 25 schools. I told them they
had to make heads turn and that’s how they are going to win which they did. Of

course, there were vast differences between our school and the other schools. We

were competing for a spot against schools categorised as cluster institutions, 45

religious schools, and Chinese schools. On that day, my students delivered an
outstanding performance. I saw the reaction on the judges’ faces and they were all

like: Wow! This is such a good school! I never thought we would get the placing but
7 we did.”

SMK Pinang Tunggal won the fifth spot in that competition.

A Poison Tree
By William Blake

I was angry with my friend;
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,
Night & morning with my tears:
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night.
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine.

And into my garden stole,
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see;
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Released on Sunday, the trailer for Disney’s upcoming Mulan live-action adaptation has
already won over skeptical loyalists of the original film. Fans were especially impressed
with Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu), who stars as the titular heroine Hua Mulan. And
although she may be a new face to many Western fans, the 31-year-old is already a
popular actress in China with numerous credits to her name. Remaking an iconic film is no
easy task. Casting directors embarked on a year-long search and saw nearly 1,000
candidates across five continents for the role of Mulan, according to The Hollywood
Reporter. The part required an ethnically Chinese young woman to have credible martial
arts skills, the ability to speak English, and of course, star quality. Liu certainly fit the bill as
a popular actress in China with many action roles under her belt and training from the
Beijing Film Academy.

3 What does the text say about Liu?
A She is multitalented.
B She does not impress her skeptics.
C She is a rising star in China’s film industry.
D She auditioned among a thousand of hopefuls in China.

4 The phrase fit the bill means

display is preceded by marching in a circle in front of the female, while
stomping his feet loudly.

5 From the extract we know that

A The bird is mystical.
B The bird dances to attract attention.
C The bird is known for its unique feature.
D The female bird has more beautiful feathers than the male.

The annual Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has always been a hit with
Malaysians. Featuring 4.5 million books sold at 75% to 95% cheaper
than their original prices, the last mega sale of books took place at
Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC) in mid-
December last year. Almost a decade ago, when the Big Bad Wolf Sale
kicked-off for the first time at Dataran Hamodal, it was manned by only
two people, the founders Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng who did
everything themselves, from hanging banners to pricing the books. It
was worth their effort, as more than 90% of the 160,000 books featured
were sold, proving the sale to be a mega hit.

6 Why Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is a big success in Malaysia?

A It offers books with a very inexpensive price.
B It sold millions books at every book fair.
C It was founded by a Malaysian couple.
D It always offers mega sales.

Incident, which occurred in 1969. The incident proved at that time that Malaysian
racial balance and stability was fragile. Immediately thereafter, the Malaysian
government sought ways to foster unity among the various races in Malaysia.
One of the methods used to encourage unity is the Rukunegara.
7 All of the statements are correct except
A The Rukun Negara was created by the kings.

Section C
[25 marks]
[Time suggested : 60 minutes]

Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 I was born with dyslexia, a learning difficulty which affects the way people read, write and spell

words. My classmates and friends were in the dark about my condition. I was never able to

differentiate between the letters b and d so I would shudder at the sight of them. Instead of looking 5
for a 2B pencil, I would be searching for a 2D pencil. Friends would look at me and ask, “Are you
witless, Jennifer? 2D pencils don’t exist!” Quietly, I would apologise.

2 I often got confused over which was my left or right shoe, even up to the age of 12. Being a left-
hander made things tougher. School was pure torture as I could not hand in simple homework

without mistakes. My form teacher, Mr. Andrew knew about my condition. Thanks to his personal

attention and encouragement, my self-esteem grew tremendously.

3 My other classmates continuously whined about scoring under 80 marks in their exams. I felt out of 10

place. I failed all my subjects. During report card days, Mum gathered all her courage to collect my

report card. I was often among the last in class. Instead of scolding me for embarrassing her, Mum

would tap my shoulder and say, “So proud of you, Jennifer!” Whenever other parents asked how I 15
had fared in the exams, she would smile politely and say, “Well, Jennifer did her best.” Facing
ridicule from everyone around me had made me work harder.

Being dyslexic, I raced against time to complete my school work every night. In school, recess time
4 meant rushing to the teachers’ desks for extra guidance. One-on-one attention greatly helps a

dyslexic. I can’t recall having the luxury of sitting in the canteen to enjoy a hot bowl of noodles.

Instead of shuttling between art classes like regular kids, I had to visit medical specialists for
consultations. When the school bell rang for dismissal, I often stayed back to get additional coaching 20

from dedicated teachers. Being the last to leave, we would lock up the office.

5 There were lots of sacrifices to be made. I had to make do with five to six hours of sleep. There was

no time to chill out with friends. Life was like one big experiment for me then. I tried different studying

techniques to find which worked best for me. All my efforts were not in vain. I scored 7As in the PMR 25
exams. I also dipped a toe on extracurricular activities by emerging champions in public speaking
and table tennis. I even took the top prize in the Federal Territory Teacher’s Day writing competition.

I started contributing articles to local magazines and the joy of seeing my name in print is

indescribable. Anyone can overcome dyslexia if they believe themselves, just like I do.

170

6 I dream of becoming a lawyer one day, and I will be starting college next month. In the meantime, I 30
am teaching underprivileged students in my school. It is a project which I initiated, and it is my way
of thanking all those who have helped me. I have been on the receiving end of much kindness. I
want to help others who are struggling in school, like I once did.

7 The smiles on the faces of the lives I’ve touched, is reward enough for me. After what I’ve gone 35
through as a child, I dedicate this piece to all those who have to go the extra mile to realise their
dreams.

THE LIVING PHOTOGRAPH (by Jackie Kay)
My small grandmother is tall there,
straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt,
pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
white hand in black hand.
Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.

It was true after all; that look.
My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.
She went to the awful place grandmothers go.
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.

But there she is still,
in the photo with me at three,
the crinkled smile is still living, breathing.

Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

“There was

189

another teacher who did it with me.
