We have embarked on several building projects during 2019.
The major project of rebuilding our Basketball, Netball,
Tennis and Volleyball courts was necessitated by the cracking
which occurred as a result of the changes in the water table
resulting from the thirsty blue gum trees. It was with sadness
that we had to remove the trees in order to facilitate this
project. We look forward to this new state of the art facility
which will be available for us in 2020. We have also
renovated other areas of the school, including the swimming
pool pavilion which was showing signs of aging. A new clinic
has been established at School House hostel to accommodate
our change to termly boarding from 2020 and early 2020 will
see the upgrade of the staff quarters at North Lodge. We are
extremely proud of our wonderful buildings and understand
that they take a great deal of attention to maintain the
heritage that they represent.
On 22 December we received the sad news of the passing of
Mr Piet Makonjane, who had served the school for 33 years
as a General Assistant. Mr Makonjane was a resident on the
property and gave a great deal of his time to the school. We
extend our condolences to his family.
In closing, I can comfortably say that between the challenges

Alison Kitto Walkway
On 20 May, a crisp autumn morning, the
walkway connecting the old building and the
new building, was officially opened by Mrs
Kitto. She was PHSG principal from 1995 to
2003. Mr Fortuin (GDE), Yanna Fortounous
(PHSG Head Girl of 2000) and other dignitar-
ies also attended the assembly and opening.
Yanna spoke in honour of Mrs Kitto, telling the
assembly of her passion for Mathematics and
her great love of sports. She inspired many girls
such as Yanna, to continue studying
Mathematical Sciences. Mrs Kitto is an
author of Mathematics textbooks that are used
throughout the country. Mrs Kitto was also a
loyal fan of all sports played at PHSG, and she
especially did not miss the hockey matches. It
used to be a treat to celebrate her birthday at
school, as everybody got a doughnut on the
day!
Mrs Kitto is proudly South African and as her
tenure was during the early days of our
democracy, she worked consistently to build
relationships between everyone and to get
people connected; just like the walkway named
in her honour.
