105 Years’ Open Day Celebrations

The “Clap-Clap” song Polar Bear madness

The celebration of Girls’ High’s 105th Birthday started with a bang, or rather a “clap”
as all the girls gathered outside the front of the school to perform the “Clap Clap”
song with hand motions to match. After lots of laughter, there was a united spirit
among the girls as they went off to collect what was probably the highlight of the day,
a free doughnut and coke. From there, the activities for the day got into full swing with
some brave swimmers in the Polar Bear swim and the more beauty-conscious
reclining at the Beauty Spa. On the sporting front, the 1st Team Hockey girls took on
the Old Girls and lost while battles were fought on the Basketball and Volleyball
courts. The Music Department pleased audiences with their String and Woodwind
ensembles, piano recitals and singing performances by the Choir, Les Fées and
Rythmony. There were numerous challenges including the Chess Challenge, the
Computyping department’s “ultimate speed test” and the History’s department’s
“Weakest Link” competition which kept the girls on their toes.
The day ended on a high note with the performance of the Teachers of the Caribbean
(written and directed by Mrs Cÿrus) in which the staff threw caution to the wind and
donned their acting caps as Captain Jack Sparrow (aka Mr Jelley) and Davey Jones (aka
Mrs McNair), with the help of others, tried to find a
way of raising funds for a new hall by killing Sarel
Seemonster (aka the Kraken) and forcing it to
“cough up the cash”! After
much hilarity and a standing
ovation, Open Day drew to
a close. Thanks go to
everyone who
contributed to
the day’s
success.

taking a year off to go overseas, so consider doing it. It will be the most

carefree time of your life so enjoy yourself – travel to London, waitress,

work odd part-time jobs to learn about different industries. Then come

As women you will face many challenges in the working arena:

1. Women struggle to be taken seriously and their opinions are often

ignored and discarded. I have two pieces of advice: voice your

opinions passionately and ignore your critics. It might make you

unpopular in the short term but it buys you respect.

2. The second piece of advice is to rely on your fathers. Here I appeal

to the fathers: you have extraordinary daughters, recognise how

difficult it is for a woman to be respected. Offer advice, be there

when required, guide your daughters to choose wisely and support

them in their struggles.

3. Women have to work harder than men to be recognised. That’s a

4. Women battle to be considered for promotion. Often they are their

5. When justified, demand promotion and

recognition for what you achieve. Women are

Wow, what a year!
Wow, what a year! It all started with us arriving back at hostel and what was
going to be year full of new challenges and experiences. Most of us were
pleased to see each other again, but some very cautious and not-so-eager faces
could be spotted amongst the new girls and the Grade 8s. We also welcomed
two new hostel teachers, Ms Cass and Fraü du Toit , who were embarking on
the challenge of mothering seventy-two teenage girls.
The trip to Menlyn was a great way to escape hostel life for a while and that
evening we had our newspaper fashion show. On Sunday, the girls enjoyed
the Hatfield Flea Market. The Grade 8s looked gorgeous in their bright green
dresses and put on an awesome show.
Valentine's Day was a delight as we were joined by Mr and Mrs McNair for
dinner. Later that evening, North Lodge and School House were serenaded
by five Affies’ boys. Inter-hostel Volleyball also took place and North Lodge
was determined to win again – and we did! We also managed to bag the Spirit
Trophy much to the other hostel's disapproval.
Our Boarder Parents' dinner was a huge success and the girls themselves
managed to walk away with most of the prizes. Later on in the year, the hostel
woke up to the smell of hot chocolate and cake to celebrate the Matrics'
“Forty days”.
To my queens, my sisters, never forget that you girls make hostel what it is.
Thank you for making each day a special memory. Keep on dancing, trying,
sharing your heart and believing.

Peace and love to all!
Amanda Kandawire

Pretty, curious little faces
Pretty, curious little faces arrived on the School House doorstep on the first day of term,
all in their bright green dresses. These little lasses were to become our new little sisters.
This year in School House has been marked by changes. Firstly, our beloved Ms Russell,
after some serious thought and consideration, decided to step down as House Mistress. Mrs
Lamb took over the reins and after some adjustments were made, we all settled down
comfortably.
Our annual boarder stay-in weekend was one filled with laughter and mischief. We held the
newspaper fashion show and we are proud to say that we have fashion designers in the making.
We also enjoyed a lovely braai in the pool area, marking the end of a wonderful weekend.
On Valentine's Day, the hostel girls were treated to a romantic breakfast on the horse-shoe
lawn. We all felt special, loved and appreciated, while watching the sunrise. A badge-giving
ceremony, which was simple yet memorable, was held in our newly furnished common room –
fully equipped with a big television screen and bright flamboyant colours. Many thanks to the
Boarder Committee for these additions. Our theme dinner of 007 or Sophiatown was a great
success and was attended by Ms Russell and Mrs Turner who came dressed as Tina Turner
and Goldfinger.
We enjoyed many memorable moments which strengthened our bonds. Through all the
TV nights, breakfasts, disagreements, reconciliations, Inter-hostel games, fire drills and
hostel meetings, the most treasured moments would the ones where we treated each other
with compassion, love, care and appreciation.
To all the hostel teachers: thank you for always caring for us and having a keen interest
in our lives. To Matron, thank you for your healing hands and opening up a valuable
tuckshop. To Mrs Lamb, we are thankful for your contribution, all the words of
wisdom and comfort, and for being a fantastic second mother to all seventy of us. To
Nicole van den Munckhof, thank you for everything. We have been a good team
alternating as Good Cop and Bad Cop. To all the matrics, the legends, you have all
been pillars of strength to Nicole and me. Go out there and make the world
your oyster.
Once a School House lass, always a School House lass.
School House is the place to be.

Halala School House Halala!

Unique memories
05:50 am. The bell sounds. Ms Francis shouts, “Morning Girls!” There
is the moaning of exhausted girls, the creaking of floors and the smell of
breakfast is drifting through the air. This is how the year began.
The year, like many others, had a host of experiences, surprises and
changes in store for us: from our hostel outing to the Cullinan Mine,
which was the first of many for the girls, to the highly anticipated
Seniors' Dance. Tradition plays a large part in the St Albans’ year. An
unforgettable event in particular was the Grade 8 Orientation. During
the first weekend, the Grade 8s and new girls got a little taste of what
hostel life is really about.
Within the five years of my stay at St Albans, I think it is safe to say
that it is virtually impossible for a dull moment to exist. Whether it is the
intriguing innocence of the Grade 8s, the mischievousness of the Grade
9s, the continually bubbly attitudes of the Grade 10s, or the entrancing
melodies of the Grade 11s, you are bound to find yourself smiling.
Matrics of 2007, throughout the past five years we have grown and
matured together. Every year holds a unique memory: from hiding
bags, to standing together when we disagree. Our indestructible spirit
and camaraderie have pulled us together even in the toughest of times.
To the ladies of St Albans hostel: work together, make the best of
every situation, whether good or bad.
Keletso Modise
