camp, they learnt to work as a team and bonded as a group. They turned
out to be extremely enthusiastic and energetic and soon became part of
the Aitken family. At the Inter-house Gala our Cow-girl cheerleaders
were full of style and outshone all the others with their outfits and spirit!
Our swimmers swam their hearts out, spurred on by us all. Although
we didn’t finish as high up as we hoped, our swimmers made us all
proud. The Aitkenites showed their versatility by excelling at

academics as well as achieving Third Place in the Inter-house Quiz.
The second term brought the jersey display: a big thank you to the
Grade 10s who made the “Desperate Housewives’ dirty laundry”
theme a success. At the Inter-house Athletics we were not the fastest
athletes, but the girls showed enthusiasm and gave it their all.
This unforgettable year would not have been possible without the
hard work of so many people: special thanks go to Minette Cilliers,
my deputy, who really went beyond what was expected of her and to
the matrics who have been such an important part of the house.

Finally, thank you to all the staff for their input and support
throughout the year. This house wouldn’t be what it is without the
spirit and gusto of every girl who is part of Aitken. It has been an
honour to be Head of Aitken and I wish you all the best for years to

All I see is blue, green, orange, yellow, maroon, purple, silver
and then, the next minute, I see the most vibrant WARM
colour, the colour you all love to hate - THE RED FIRE OF
ATHLONE! We came out stronger than ever before this
year. At the Inter-house Gala our stunning cheerleaders
came out as tiny little devils and sang their hearts out. But
even though we were interrupted by rain, we stood there as
one house showing the heart of every girl in Athlone. Being
Head of House has been the most amazing time and
journey! One thing I learnt is that one is never alone if you
are in Athlone, as somewhere along the line, one will always
find a willing Athlonian there. We are one big happy and
LOUD family! We worked well together everywhere: at the
Inter-house Athletics, where we came third; at the Inter-
house Gala; at all our events and at House Week.

The Red Fire Of Athlone!

Buxton

The scene is tense. The stand swims with girls dressed in bright green. As the
runner comes around the final stretch, the crowd of green goes wild and cheers
are sounded. 2007 can be marked as a year of enthusiasm for Buxton. Never
before has such energy been displayed by everyone in the house. The many
events that we participated in would not have been the same without our ‘never-
say-die’ attitude. The Inter-house Gala saw the cheerleaders’ entrance surprise
everyone. We felt we could do nothing but express the adventurous personalities
of the cheerleaders and thus were dressed like pirates – we were certainly
successful and the house loved it. We sang out little hearts out until the gala was
interrupted by the rain, although this didn’t dampen our spirits as much as it
dampened our clothing. We began a chorus of Singing in the Rain, but decided

to call a truce when we could no longer hear ourselves over the lightning and rain.
The Inter-house Gala saw our U17 ‘Dream Team’ win the relay event for the
fourth consecutive year, breaking their own record. The day was filled with
cheering and laughing and everyone joined in. What makes Buxton special, is
the fact that our enthusiasm is unrelenting. It was present in house assemblies,
at events and even in the corridors. We appreciate each other and the work that
we do for the house never goes without recognition. As the cherry on top of a
memorable year, six of our Grade 11s were chosen as part of the RCL
Executive for 2008! Fentse and Katherine cannot thank everyone enough and
hope that the magic spirit of Buxton never fades.

2. The amazing and talented CLARENDONITES OF 2007!

Thank you to the Clarendonites of 2007. You were the driving force … the
inspiration … the motivation and impetus behind a wonderful year.

While you begin a year wanting to win and succeed in all events, you soon
realise that success lies elsewhere. In 2007, Clarendon succeeded in what truly
matters: coming to love and cherish one’s classmates as one’s friends and
discovering joy and happiness in participation. Success was attained in the
‘small things’: Karen Potgieter and Natalie Cornelius participating in the 800m
on Athletics Day; Grade 8s’ bags becoming SMALLER and their smiles just a
little BIGGER; seeing a new face in house assembly…

2007 also saw success in swimming, athletics, academics and cultural
activities – all due to our excellent teachers and the remarkable Mrs van Zyl. Well
done to everyone for ensuring the Clephan Shield came home to Clarendon!

Yet, apart from all that, Clarendon’s greatest and most valuable achievements
came in the friendships we built, the problems we overcame and in the joys we
experienced.

Connaught

What an absolutely amazing year it has been with us winning the Spirit Cup at the

Inter-house Gala as well as at the Inter-house Athletics held at Affies Seuns Hoër.

The Connaught girls swam their hearts out at the Inter-house Gala, some coming

first from the bottom and some first from the top. But, either way, Connaught was

there to cheer and to support. The ‘new and improved’ cheerleaders of this year

made an unforgettable statement with their boxing outfits at the gala and were ready

and geared up for any action. We thoroughly enjoyed the girls’ spirit and their love

for Connaught. Everybody knows that Connaught is one of the original houses

which follows certain traditions that other houses have abandoned. This is what

makes us truly unique and what binds us together.

The monthly house meetings have proven to be somewhat … interesting,

starting with the introduction of the new Grade 8s at the beginning of this year.

The girls had to agree to uphold the Connaught Mission Statement and then were

introduced to their own individual matric who would guide and support them

throughout their first year at high school. This didn’t seem too scary but the next

weekend was … the Grade 8 camp. This was a time for the Grade 8s to bond and

it was just a little introduction to the Girls’ High Family. Shandukani and Nikita

enjoyed themselves, laughing from the time it started up until the time it ended!

The matrics had to bribe the house during house assembly one morning as they were

Wow! What a hectic year this has been. I have enjoyed taking on the challenge of
being Head of Duncan House.

House activities were fairly spread out this year, however, when the time came –
‘yho’, there was major stress! Fortunately, I had a great team behind me in Sarah
Martin, my deputy, and in Mokgabo Tshenkeng.

The Grade 8 Camp was the first task I had on my hands but, as I was preoccupied
with the Grade 8s, Sarah came out tops making most of the arrangements. The
littluns settled in very well, and although they all had a lot of fun and got to know each
other, they still had a few things to learn about house spirit.

The Inter-house Gala was the highlight out of all the activities during the year
(even though the matrics didn’t get to sing the school cheer due to a massive
downpour). For our cheerleaders, it was time to really unleash “The Legends”:
Lindiwe, Pearl, Mokgabo, Erin and Sarah, who were and still are the best!

Our General Knowledge Quiz contestants: Hazel, Charmaine, Sinazo, Kelly and
the young Miss Godfrey, did us proud and we kept our Duncanites’ reputation in
tact, coming sixth.

The Jersey Display pushed us up into First Place with the number of jerseys our
girls brought. Keep it up ladies!

On your marks, get set, go! Athletics was a morning to remember and our house
spirit was superb. Thank you to all those who put in an effort to show “the haters”
that Duncan is the best house EVER! Well done to all those who took part in the
activities as Duncan, once again, took many top positions especially in the track events.

Last, but not least, thank you to the Duncan house teachers who supported us throughout the
year especially Mrs Daniels and Mrs Lubie – you’ll never be forgotten. It is because of you that
Duncan has kept its flag flying.

Gladstone

Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the
number of moments that take your breath away. Looking back,
being Head of Gladstone has been one of those breathtaking
experiences. 2007 was kick-started by the Grade 8 camp where the
adorable, enthusiastic and spirited ‘Blue pimps’ set the year off on a
high note as strong Gladstone bonds began to form. The Inter-
house Gala was a cheer-filled occasion, led by the super hot and
CRAZY cheerleaders, dressed as golfers (on steroids!). Once again,
we were robbed of the Spirit Cup but that didn’t dampen our spirits
and neither did the rain. The cheering went on! The house was still
on fire at the Inter-house Athletics with all grades working together.
Their positive mindset has kept us strong and happy (GLAD:-) as a
house. Thank you to all teachers and pupils alike for the great
contribution you have added to this amazing year. Remember,
when life gives you lemons, SMILE and make Oros!

McWilliam

McWilliam was greeted with an enthusiastic group of Grade 8s this year.
Armed with spirit, the Grade 8s tackled the Grade 8 camp and fun was had by
all. We ‘rocked the party’ at the Inter-house Gala and our stylish cheerleaders
outdid themselves when it came to cheering along our swimmers.
Unfortunately, we could not see what we were made of this year as the gala
was rained out, but we managed to snatch victory in the lifesaving relay yet
again … The entire house gave it their all in this year’s charity drives. The
matrics played their hearts out in every soccer match; our Grade 11s looked
gorgeous at their Valentine’s Ball; the Grade 10s had a refreshing swim; the
Grade 9s got a fitness workout in their boxercise; and the Grade 8s were full
of energy as most of them decided to run the Big Walk! Our girls brushed
up on their general knowledge and came seventh in the annual General
Knowledge Quiz. Congratulations must go to our Grade 10s who won the
Jersey Display with the innovative idea of “Burying the cold this winter”.
Our cheerleaders once yet again kept the house motivated at the Inter-
house Athletics and our athletes gave it their best. A wonderful year it has
been! Thanks must go to Ms Cass (our new Head of House) who gave
selflessly of her time and expertise, the rest of the McWilliam form
teachers for all their support and our cheerleaders (Mandisa, Liz, Wame,
Nikki, Lisemelo and Severn). McWilliam, remember, you’re ALL STARS!

van Zyl Selborne

Wow! That is all that comes to mind when I think of our house and what we have
achieved this year. Starting the year, it was an absolute pleasure to welcome bright
new Gr 8s into Selborne. The Grade 8 Camp was a blast and they showed so
much character and talent (my little purple Cobras!). We came second in the
games section and second in the Grade 8 Fun Gala.

The Inter-house Gala was great as we had plenty of water-babies in our team
and it showed when Selborne came fifth. Unfortunately, it was rained out before
the end and the matrics could not sing their song. The Inter-house Quiz proved
to be a challenge but I’m sure the girls will do better next year! Mrs Barnes had
her little girl, Charice, and this brought great joy but also great sadness to
Selborne as we lost our Head of House and Grade 8 form teacher, but Mr
Ferreira filled in graciously and the young girls enjoy him as their new form
teacher. Thanks are due to Mrs L du Toit for taking on a huge task as Head of
House, but she did it effortlessly and has made my job much easier. The Inter-
house Athletics ended splendidly as our athletes ran their hearts out to get us
First Place. Well done! House week created wonderful memories for all as well
as the Matric soccer day!

This year has been nothing but fun as Head of House. Thanks go to Karabo,

Stationery Shop jersey display; the ‘James Bond’ Inter-house Gala; the hot
afro-centric Inter-house Athletics, where we came a proud ‘hola 7’, we have
become living proof of one of the greatest truths of the universe. To our
new companions, especially the eager Grade 8s, we appreciate your support.
The special moments we have shared have become my most valued
memories, embedded in my “orange” heart. Of all the memories, house
assemblies are ranked Number One. We played charades with the Grade
10s, played chocolate and poodle games, celebrated birthdays and
achievements. It was here where we sat together, bonded, sang, motivated
each other and where we all shared one common goal: to lift Van Zyl
higher.

To all the supporters, particularly during House Week, you were
awesome and to all the ladies who participated in the activities throughout
the year, thank you. We definitely have some talented soccer and netball
players in the house. Not forgetting our intellectual minds who were
involved in the Debating final – keep eating fish.

A big “thank you” to the Orange Superwoman, Ms Kladis who kept
our spirit alive. To my deputy, Nolwazi Mjwara, words cannot express my
gratitude and appreciation. You were, and still are, the greatest anchor I have ever had.

The time has come, my fellow companions, for the matrics to leave you. The
journey on this orange brick road is still ahead for you. Stay strong and persevere, hold
on to the drive, energy, spirit, enthusiasm and the bonds which kept us firmly fused
together this year.
We saw, we see, and we shall still see the colour orange rise evermore. Long live the

We had yet another fun-filled season and cannot believe it’s Angela Correia, Connie Chen, Mrs M Andrade, Gina Switala,

A s the US tennis player, Arthur Ashe, once said, 'One important key to success is self-
confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.' This year the determination,
dedication and enthusiasm of the players was incredible.
The year was filled with challenging tournaments, school championships and of course our annual
function with Boys' High. The Premium League was held during Term One and our top six
players took part. This year both our First and Second Teams played in the Premier League.
During the Second Term the Junior and Senior teams participated in the Gauteng North
Schools' Tennis League.
The tournaments of the year gave the players the opportunity to get
to know one another and gain experience. One of these
highlights was the Pietermaritzburg Derby Day. Our seniors
managed to win while our juniors lost narrowly. Our team also
came seventh at the Liesl Hubbe Junior Tennis Tournament,
second in the All Girls' National Festival and first in the Saint
Peter's Festival.
During the holidays, many players took part in tournaments and competed with top players
around the country. We are proud to say that Andrea Oates and Stacey Lock received South
African Colours.
Special thanks go to our organisers and coaches who have encouraged us. We are indeed
privileged to have them. We are truly grateful for their assistance and positive attitudes.
Unfortunately, many exceptional matric players will be leaving the Girls' High tennis family. We
wish them all the best and hope that wherever they go, tennis will be a part of them.
To all our tennis players, we wish you all the best for 2008.
