Dear readers Belinda Milne, Lorraine du Toit and Daleen Swanepoel
WWe trust that our magazine is a fitting and accurate
reflection of all that happened during the year and that you
will enjoy reading it. The decision was taken to name our
magazine 'The Iris', which will give it a special identity and
form a link with our emblem, the iris flower, chosen by our
school's founder, Miss Edith Aitken.

In the cultural arena, 2005 was a year of great success.
The musical Cinderella was produced by staff of the school,

Valedictor y Speech: A tli Phatudi (Head Girl )
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, staff, fellow
matrics and our honoured guest speaker. I would like
to begin by reading the following poem by Iyanla
Vanzant entitled A Girl's Pledge.
I am a girl.
I am an expression of beauty, joy and Love.
I have the right, the power and the ability to create
a beautiful, joyful and peaceful world for myself
and others.
I have a body, but I am not my body.
I have a face, but I am not my face.
I am the most important thing in the world
to me.
I am love in motion.
I am the light of the world!
I can create!
I can make a mistake!
I can create something beautiful in all that I do.
I deserve the best
I give the best.
I do my best to always take care of me!
I am a girl. the casualties had to resort to squashing together in

moments are plentiful.
Earlier this year, Mrs Myers of the Old Girls'
Association described the scenario whereby we would
write the final full stop of our final exam, signifying the
very end of high school. I know how so many of you
matrics dreamed of reaching this point and in just over a
month we will have reached this goal, after seven years
of primary school and five years of high school. Then, I
remembered the saying: 'Don't count the number of
breaths you take, but rather the number of moments
that take your breath away'.
So, here we stand on the brink of our future and we
look back at some of the great moments we've shared
here at Girls' High. To me, it's remembering the feeling
of victory this year, when our Second Hockey Team beat
Affies for the first time since I started playing in Grade 8.
I can remember passing water-balloons behind our
backs while singing during a Four Schools Concert and
hoping they wouldn't pop.
The time when one of my friend's school togbag
melted in technology because someone in the previous
class forgot to switch the stove off was very amusing.
Last year, I encouraged my French class to do a French
dance at Boys High. This turned out to be in floral
waistcoats in front of the entire school. Memories of
the train trips, bus tours, house plays, music concerts,
sports events and Inter-house activities flood my mind.

SSt Albans Hostel … need we say more? This year has
definitely been a fusion of excitement, enjoyment and
endearment! Since the year began there has hardly been a
dull moment.
We arrived in our usual red hostel kilts amongst the chatter,
shrieks of glee and weepy parents, everyone happy to see
each other and eager to catch up. The poor little Grade 8s
were nervous and unsure, but they brought new life into
our hostel. They all soon found out what hostel was all
about: looking after water balloon 'babies' for two weeks,
going to Woolworths parking lot in black plastic bags for
an aerobics workout and spending an afternoon with the
Boys' High guys boogying on a piece of newspaper.
The following are just some of the special moments that
make hostel living a truly memorable experience:
Mothering Sunday, which gives all the girls an opportunity
to express their appreciation for their mothers, the Hostel
Sports Day which was great fun, going to ten pin bowling
together; the Hostel Seniors' Dance where we were taken
back to our roots with an African theme and the Boarders'
Social. But hostel life is not just about activities and fun.
Every year we grow to become more mature and
independent, less selfish and more appreciative of what we
have and the people with whom we share our school days.
I would like to thank all the staff who make St Albans such
a homely hostel, especially Mrs Gebhardt, to whom we
have to say farewell at the end of this year. You have been
an exceptional 'mother' and role model to the girls. You
give of yourself wholeheartedly and always put the hostel
first. Your contribution to St Albans is invaluable. Thank
you.
Our girls will always have a unique bond and our loyalty to
one another just grows with each passing year. For the
matrics of 2005 this year marked the climax and end of our
unforgettable stay at our hostel. Thank you for hundreds
of laughs and all your support, but most of all for the
precious friendships!
Long live St Albans!
