Maths Department. Two new Afrikaans teachers, Karen Buckley
and Frank Ferreira, were employed as well as a Technology teacher,
Allison Swanepoel. Both the German and French Departments
benefitted from the arrival of Jeanné de Kock who would be
teaching both languages to the junior girls. Donné Pitt, after assisting
at times last year, became a permanent member of the Art
Department. The school was also happy to welcome our new
receptionist and front-of-house, Lara Cox.

There were no weddings after the previous year proved to be a
‘bumper’ year in these celebrations. Nadine van Wyk from the Music
Department did, however, give birth to a baby girl, Karla, in June and
Tinsie Janse van Rensburg welcomed a third daughter, Riani, into her
family in September. Janet Welgemoed became engaged in
September while on holiday in Mozambique. Congratulations!

Girls’ High had to say an early and goodbye to our very talented
and humorous Head of Music, Paul Ferreira, who left at the end of
Term 1 to head up the Music Department at Cornwall Hill College in
Irene. Two music teachers, Carin van Graan and Marco Fourie,
assisted with singing and accompaniment in his absence. In July, our
administration assistant, Irene Makhanya, who was very ably
assisting Joan Viljoen, received a very good offer from the University
of Pretoria in their administration department which she could not
turn down. Though a loss to the school, we wish her well in her new
venture.

At the end of the year, two teachers resigned to follow their
husbands who had job transfers. Michele Booysen, who worked
tirelessly in the Art Department for 13 years to ensure work of an
extremely high standard and to involve the girls in many art
competitions across Gauteng and South Africa, took a position at
Penryn College near Nelspruit for 2010. Janine Knoetze, whose
husband had just qualified as a vet, followed him to work down in
Natal. Janine contributed a lot to the school in the relatively short
time she was here. She was a highly valued member of the English
Department, liaison of Cross Country and one of the North Lodge
House Mistresses. Carla Grobler, who was seeking new challenges,
also resigned to take up a position at Tiger Valley College in Pretoria.
Carla’s contribution to the Maths Department, Tennis and in many
other different spheres is greatly appreciated and her cheerful smile
and never-ending willingness to help will be sorely missed. Best
wishes to you all.

SSchool House has had yet another memorable year. From the beginning where we
welcomed the cutest Grade 8s to our home, right to the end where we bid farewell to the
extraordinary matrics of 2009.
The year began with our traditional first week-end stay in. It was a weekend packed with
fun, games, movies, shopping, braais and a whole lot of bonding which gave everyone
the chance to settle into the new year.
This marked only the beginning of more splendid moments to be shared together.
What was to follow was the charming meeting between the Grade 8s and the boys
across the railway line; the sweet crumpets topped with chocolate syrup hearts served
on Valentine’s Day morning; the magical visit to the planetarium and our very own fun-
filled School House Confederations Cup. Again, we all had the chance to explore our inner
talent and showcase unique and enjoyable skits at the annual Boarder Parents’ Dinner.
Between all these special events and even the routine meals, meetings and duties, lie
unforgettable moments and some of the strongest bonds between us.
However, the year would not run so smoothly without the help of the hostel staff.
To Mrs Lamb, the matrons and the rest of the staff, we may not always be the best
bunch but your work and efforts are always appreciated.
To the matric Duchesses, thank you for the role you played in hostel and my best
wishes go to all of you for the journey that lies ahead.
To all my sisters, thank you for a memorable year. School House is not merely a
hostel; it is a home with seventy other siblings. Keep up the great spirit and make the
best of the time you have here. After all, there is no place like School House!

MMost people would expect the pending closure of our hostel to add tension to the
group dynamic and cause a lot of clashing, but it hasn’t. 2009 has been an extremely
eventful year, bringing many surprises, experiences and endings.
The first two weeks were unforgettable as we welcomed the Grade 8s as they got
their first taste of hostel life.
For the first time in fifteen years, our hostel Sports Day took place on the allocated
date and Mrs Bagshaw attended to give her support. We all had a fun-filled day
together. Our annual hostel outing was spent at the Barnyard Theatre in Menlyn Park.
We watched Roll over Beethoven. It was an entertaining evening, enjoyed by everyone.
Another traditional Mothering Sunday took place where we showed appreciation
for our mothers and loved ones with roses and some interesting homemade gifts. The
Grade 8s interaction with the boys across the railway line was full of excitement and
we must not forget our late night meets with Mrs McNair. Later in the year, we played
Inter-hostel Volleyball where we all played and cheered our hearts out and bonded as a
hostel.
From the highly anticipated Seniors’ Dance to our relationship with our hostel
matrons, hostel has been an unforgettable experience. I shall never forget the
intriguing innocence of the Grade 8s, the mischievousness of the Grade 9s and the
somewhat bubbly but interesting attitudes of the Grade 10s and 11s.
I would like to thank the hostel staff and Mrs van Rooyen for a wonderful year.
Vuyiswa Yeni Grade 12
