Aitken

Aitken has once again done itself proud! The year started off on a high

note with our enthusiastic Grade 8s coming fourth at the Grade 8 Camp.

This house is full of spirit and we once again won the Spirit Cup at the

Inter-house gala in the first term. We had a wonderful play directed by

the talented Kelly Cancella and Shereen Kennard. The play was called

‘The Assistant’. It had a Cinderella kind of twist. The directors

hand-picked the actresses and made it a great success. The Grade

10s chose the theme for the annual jersey display and came up with

the theme ‘Pot of Gold’. The idea was very creative, but

unfortunately only landed us in ninth place. Well done for all the hard

work.

Aitken We also participated at the Inter-house Quiz and we came seventh. The
Aitkenites brought along their spirit once again at the athletics meeting and that
landed us with the Spirit Cup in our hands yet again! Winning the Spirit Cup twice in

the year really says something about Aitken’s level of camaraderie! Our last event was

House Week which went rather well. The senior soccer team managed to win. The water

polo was played in the fourth term and the Aitkenites played exceptionally well, managing

fourth place. A big thank you to Ms Dugmore, who has been very supportive and always willing to go the extra mile and to my

Deputy and friend, Shereen Kennard, for always being so hard-working and dedicated. To the 2009 cheerleaders, you have a done a

fantastic job. Lastly, to the matrics and the rest of the house, thank you for always participating. Without you this house wouldn’t

be the same. Congratulations to the new Heads. I wish you all the best for next year and the years to come.

The best thing that you can wear and it will always suit you is a smile.

Athlone

‘We Love Athlone, Yes, We Do’

Red is frequently used as a symbol of guilt, anger and sin but at Pretoria High

School for Girls the red is a representation for Unity, Excellence, Spirit and

most importantly, Athlone.

Our little Grade 8s were welcomed into our family with open arms and,

without hesitation, they rushed to purchase their house badges

because they quickly learnt that no superhero can be recognised

without identification. The Inter-house Gala was indeed a sweet

event. Our cheerleaders, with their candy coloured, red and white

outfits and pig tails, charmed the crowd. Our girls swam like champs

and the house cheered them on, right to the point where they

themselves were red. Although we were not victorious, Athlone stuck

together till the end.

Knowledge is power and Athlone had the power and this was proved

when Athlone came first in the General Knowledge Quiz. Athlone

dominated right from the start. Our girls remained calm and collected Athlone
throughout the quiz. Our house play, The ‘News Room’ showed off Athlone’s mature
side. No one could deny the chemistry the actresses had on stage.

The Grade 10s’ unforgettable jersey display ‘Athlone Ignited’ lit up the hall. Athlone

celebrated when we were announced the winners. Well done Grade 10s! Athlone also lit up

the Affies track at the Inter-house Athletics, leaving our competitors in the dust. At the end of the day, all Athlone could say was,

‘Yes, we did it again’. For the second consecutive year Athlone has won the athletics. During House Week Athlone was geared up

and ready to go. The girls were enthusiastic to give it one last push before the end and this they did.

Athlone is indeed the house where excellence is not the exception but the norm. The year 2009 was a great year for our family and

our fire is still burning furiously. A big congratulations to the house for winning the 2009 Clephan Shield. Now we sit and wait for

the challenges next year will bring us.

Buxton

We all walk about in our green dresses at school but there is one thing that sets us all apart and that’s

our houses. I’m proud to be part of one of the best – Buxton!

At the Grade 8 Camp, our young Buxtonites showed real spirit and enthusiasm in all the

activities. The gala that was held at the end of the weekend showed their determination and

they were placed eighth overall.

At the Inter-house Gala we gave it our all and achieved amazing results, coming fourth

overall. This result was all thanks to our cheerleaders ‘Miss Independents’ and, of course,

our swimmers.

Buxton’s house play ‘Safety on a Camel’ was phenomenal thanks to our directors,

Malebo and Bonita. A special thanks to our actors and actresses, as well as our backstage

crew and manager and our sound and music girls. One more thank you to Alexia and Zjuan

for taking on the role as the camel.

At the Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz Buxton really showed their metal by coming

second overall. Thank you to all the participants for doing us proud. The Grade 10s did a great

Buxton job with the theme for the jersey display.
The Inter-house Athletics was a day of fun and excitement. Even though we tied ninth, our

spirit was endless. Thank you to all the last-minute volunteers on the day, due to the swine flu

epidemic!

House week was the highlight at the Inter-house activities where our Buxtonites showed off

their talents or learnt something new.

Our bridge and debating teams came an inspired first. Senior volleyball players came an impressive second and both our cricket teams

achieved a solid third position. Well done and thank you to all the girls who participated willingly and with such enthusiasm.

It was a pleasure being head of such an enthusiastic and spirited house. House meetings were a breeze thanks to Buxton’s teachers,

especially Mrs Cloete. I would not have been able to get through the year without Malebo, my deputy, who had my back throughout the

year. Thank you to my fellow Buxtonites for an outstanding year and remember … ‘Our Blood is Green’!

Kylie Oosthuizen (Grade 12)

Clarendon

‘You don’t always have to win to be the best’.

This past year was a rather successful one for Clarendon. With a few trials

and many tribulations, we definitely proved to be the best that we can be!

Our success started with the arrival of our new Grade 8s and the beginning of

the fun-filled Grade 8 ‘Safari Camp’. With activities including flag-painting, a

treasure hunt and skits directed by the girls, everyone was sure to have a blast!

The new Clarendonites came second in the Grade 8 Gala and their cheering

abilities proved to be promising for the years to come. Our theme for the

Inter-house Gala was inspired by Austin Powers’ Goldmember: It was titled

‘Clarendon going for Gold’. Although we didn’t quite achieve our goal by

winning the gold, we left the pool enclosure with fifth place and gold in our

hearts. Our play stole the limelight and had the whole school in hysterics, giving Clarendon
the girls and teachers something to talk about for weeks. The play swooped
awards such as Best Director, Best Script and Best Actress (shared with Connaught)

and was even entered into the FNB All Girls’ Festival with thanks to Sofi Zway and

Anelisa Tabata. ‘Waiting Insane – How Precous Sithole lost her Stapler’ was a true

Clarendon success! We came third in the Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz with the

help from Melina Melatakos, Tumi Ramofoko, Sofi Zway, Danielle Millar and Nicola Williams.

Our jersey display ’Spongebob in the City’ was also definitely a sight to see, thanks to our ever so spirited Grade 10s! When it came to Inter-

house Athletics, Clarendon showed off their athletic capability, resulting in a third place. House Week was filled with laughter and heaps

of fun during soccer, cricket, volleyball and basketball matches as well as junior rounders. All in all, 2009 proved to be filled with

enthusiasm, energy and all round excellent performance from all the Clarendon ladies! A big thank you goes to Mrs Grobler for all her

hard work as well as to all the Clarendon teachers! Thank you, Nicola for your dedication and support. You have been an excellent Vice

Head of House.

GO FOR GOLD CLARENDON!

House Highlights

Connaught

There is a saying that goes, ‘Time flies when you are having fun’.

This past year describes exactly this and much fun was had by all the ladies in

dark blue. The year got off to a racing start with the Grade 8 camp. The theme

for the camp was ‘safari’ and Claudia Hetzler and her team of Smurfarians

battled it out at the weekend’s activities. At the end of the camp, the Grade 8

Gala took place, where the girls took part in all sorts of unusual activities such

as swimming in pyjamas, attempting the doggy paddle and trying not to

drown. The gala was tough and at the end of it all, Connaught’s Grade 8s

went home victorious, and in first place.

At the Inter-house Gala, our team of cheerleaders, dressed as the

masked dancers from the ‘hood’, led the whole house in cheer throughout

the event. The Connaught swimmers truly brought their best strokes out

and, after a noble effort, ended third.

Meanwhile, Kgothatso Lephoko and Keyuri Naidoo were working hard

as the directors of the house play, ‘The Underdogs’. The play told the story

of Paul and Ziggy who have super hip-hop talent, but are never given the

chance to showcase it. In the end, they upstage their teacher and perform a

Connaught dance of their own. The play received numerous nominations and Claudia
Hetzler walked off with the award for Best Actress for her role as the teacher, Mrs
Sprightly.

Term Two brought on the General Knowledge Quiz. Helen Acres, Claudia

Hetzler, Keyuri Naidoo and Erin Saunders were the participants for the evening. The

team put up a brave effort and will have many memories to treasure. The Grade 10s set up a wonderful jersey display and showed off the

colour blue in the land of ‘The Smurfs’. The numerous jerseys collected certainly kept many people warm in winter.

The Inter-house Athletics brought with it tears and laughter and the athletes made us proud with their raw talent. The Grade 8 team is

to be commended for their fine effort. At the end of the day, Connaught ended fifth.

The House Week was the matrics’ last house event. The seniors and juniors had a lot of fun on and off the field. We are proud to say

that the house participated very well and spurred on our teams.

Although the year flew by, we have many treasured memories of 2009. Special thanks go to all the people who helped make Connaught

the caring, supportive house it is and to Ms Turpin for her unwavering support. Blue is a wonderful colour. May it continue making an

impact for a long time to come!

Claudia Hetzler (Grade 12)

Duncan Duncan

This year the competition was stiff, with the Inter-house gala, athletics, house plays
and last, but not least, House Week. Duncan put up a good fight, and was placed
second in the House Plays with our play, ‘Fiction Bard’. We cheered our hearts
out at Inter-house athletics. Our Grade 8s rose to the occasion by becoming
Duncanites and made us proud. Our matrics won the cricket for us in House
week. Proteas watch out!

But the biggest competition we faced this year and won hands down was
becoming a family and working together through everything from supporting
one another in events to committing to the house and one another. These are
the best battles won! This separates us from the rest, but brings us closer
together. No matter what happens we will always be the best house!

Thank you, Duncan, for all your effort. The memories we made together will
never be forgotten. Just remember: you don’t know what you’ve got until you’ve
lost it and you don’t know what you’re missing until you’ve found it! You found your
family in this big pond, don’t lose it!

House Highlights

Gladstone

What an amazing year it has been for Gladstone. Starting by welcoming our

Grade 8s to bidding the matrics farewell. Our new Grade 8s proved

themselves at the Grade 8 Camp. Tug-of-war was their thing; they

showed a lot of spirit and team work. Our Grade 8s came fourth at the

gala, showing that our happy stones were off to a great start.

At the Inter-house Gala, although we came third from the bottom,

we had to be the house with the hottest entrance done by our own

‘Gladstone P D’. Our cheerleaders came up with a cops and robbers

theme, where our cops had to catch the other nine robbers. So next time

when things are amiss, don’t be afraid to call GLADSTONE PD! We didn’t

win the Spirit Cup but there definitely was plenty of it in the house.

Gladstone ‘Volponia’, directed by Cara Furniss and Marie-Claire van den Berg was a
play about exposing the greed and deceit that we humans have when it comes to the
love of money and power. ‘Volponia’, a woman who had inherited her father’s

riches is suddenly targeted by people in the community and they pretend to care about

her , but try to kill her to get the money. While ‘Volponia’ is well aware of this she doesn’t

know that her butler is trying to kill her and in the end succeeds. Hollywood here we come!

With our know it alls in the house, in this year’s General Knowledge Quiz we came sixth. Well done, ladies, for the fine achievement.

We had to give Athlone a chance.

Because of our neutral colour, Gladstone never runs out of ideas for the jersey displays. This year our Grade 10s decided on ‘the old

lady in the shoe box house’ theme. It was perfectly planned and fitted in with the theme of caring and giving. Inter-house athletics always

comes in the middle of the year when the girls feel that they are over-worked and ‘schooled out’. But Gladstone showed a lot of spirit as a

family with smiles on our faces.

House week was about soccer, volleyball, cricket and basketball. Although in most of our games we came third, fourth and fifth from

the bottom, our girls proved to be strong in basketball, coming first and adding more bounce into their stroll.

Gladstone over the year has been proven to be a happy house. Win or lose we always have smiles on our faces …and our shirts. Our

motto is ‘HAVE FUN’.

Mpumi Skhosana (Grade 12)

McWilliam

Team work. This is what McWilliam 2009 has been all about. The year began with

thirty-three enthusiastic Grade 8s. At the camp, they decided to call the team

‘McWilliam Stars’– a name which they lived up to. While they came ninth in the

Fun Gala that weekend, their amazing spirit and enthusiasm made them a

welcome addition to the house.

The theme that the cheerleaders chose for the Inter-house Gala this year

was ‘Sarafina’. It was McWilliam’s turn to show the school that ‘Stars don’t

do. Stars just be ...’! The swimmers’ talents and hard work ensured that we

were placed in the top six houses. Our house play ‘Detained’ did extremely

well at the House Play Festival, with three nominations: Best Script, Best

Director and Best Play. Well done to the Director and co-director, Candice

and Alex for this achievement, as well as to all the drama queens! Lauren, Sam

and Candice fared rather well at the Inter-house general Knowledge Quiz, McWilliam
coming fourth. The jersey display was organised by the Grade 10s according to
the theme ‘Every Cloud has a Silver Lining’. Thank you to the Grade 10s and Mrs

Hohls for all their hard work. Although we didn’t come first at the Inter-house

Athletics, the talent displayed on the field, the sportsmanship as well as the spirit, were

exceptional. This ensured us a fourth place finish for the day. Numerous activities took place during House Week and the girls are to be

commended for their fine spirit and commitment!

This year really was all about teamwork - whether it was at competitive house activities or at house meetings - everyone played a part in

making McWilliam a shining team. Thank you to Michaela for being a reliable Deputy and to Ms Cass for her unwavering support. Good

luck to Thuli and Kelin for 2010!

To the stars of McWilliam, always remember, do not be afraid of the darkness, for that is when stars shine the brightest!

House Highlights

Selborne Selborne

This year was a successful year for Selborne. We started the year with an
enthusiastic group of Grade 8s who were ready to shout ‘Selborne is the best’
from the bell tower during the Grade 8 Camp. These girls also did us proud by

coming first in Academics for two terms and first in basketball and soccer during
House Week - a formidable beginning for our Purple Juniors.

The annual Inter-house Gala was superb as the cheerleaders transported
everyone a few decades back as the ‘Pink Ladies’ from Grease – groovy! We
managed to secure second position missing the gold by only five points.
Another sterling achievement was the Inter-house Athletics where we came
second – again!

Our Grade 10s chose the’Powder Puff Girls’ for their jersey display and
even remixed the soundtrack, ‘Fighting cold, trying to save the world, here we
come just in time – the Selborne House Girls’. They also raised the bar by coming
first with their Supporters’ Cards.
Our house play, ‘Once Bitten, Twice Sly’ was directed by Akhona Mafenuka and
Olebogeng Morolo. This drama was original and very well cast. The lead actress,
Tiisetso Chimbalanga, was nominated for a Best Actress Award.
It has been an amazing year with the cherry on the cake being Selborne’s winning
second place in the Clephan Shield this year. Brilliant! Go Selborne!
Sibongile Ngoatje (Grade 12)

van Zyl

What a wonderful year 2009 has been for the ORANGE-TASTIC Van Zyl. The

year began by welcoming the new students at the Grade 8 camp. The little Van

Zylians definitely did make us proud by producing their best efforts in all the

activities, finishing seventh in the Grade 8 gala and first in the treasure hunt.

Their spirit was great and I am sure that they had an unforgettable experience.

Next on the list of house activities was the Inter-house Gala, an event that

every head of house, cheerleaders, swimmers and supporters couldn’t wait for.

Although there were a few minor changes to the event, Van Zyl was still pumping

with enthusiasm. We entered the gala with unique costumes which I am sure many van Zyl
thought were crazy. Half the cheerleaders were dressed in cowboy outfits and the
other half dressed as punk-rockers, ready to rock the day away. Although we may have

looked, well ... kind of ridiculous, it did not matter because our gala slogan was ‘It’s not about

the theme, it is about the team’ and so it was. Our swimmers made us proud and with the

support of the house, Van Zyl managed to defeat all and finish in first place!

House plays are always an exciting time of the year as everyone wants to show off her talents and this year the house plays were no

different. With the great efforts of Catherine Humphries (director) and Roxanne Mostert (co-director), as well as the cast, backstage and

make-up, Van Zyl put on a spectacular performance of ‘Oh Santie, You’re so naughty’. It was a humorous play, which left the audience

giggling the evening away. The performance managed to finish in one of the top five positions, making Van Zyl extremely proud once

again.

At the Inter-house Quiz Van Zyl was there with a whole lot of spirit and knowledge.

The Inter-house Athletics this year was very interesting as, a few days before the event, a crazy flu epidemic hit the school, resulting in the

absentee list reaching phenomenal numbers. Although the house was considerably smaller than usual and volunteers had to be gleaned

from every corner, Van Zyl still managed to put up a great fight. We finished eighth in the end. A special thank you to all those who

volunteered and kept the Van Zyl flag raised high in the sky.

The last event on the calendar for Van Zyl was House Week at the end of the third term. This was a time of fun and spirit as the activities

involved were generally not the average sports of our school but rather sports such as cricket, rounders and soccer were included. I am sure

everyone who was involved had a great time and Van Zyl really did do their best, finishing in the top five once again in most of the activities.

Well done Van Zyl, on a tremendously successful year. I think I can safely say that we have reached our goal for the house - up from that

dreaded tenth place that we were so accustomed to. Thank you to everyone who was a part of reaching that goal, as well as to Mrs de Bruin

for her constant support.

(Van Zyl tooti fruiti, we’re gonna whip your booti ... yeeeeha ... whip your booti ... yeeeha)

On your marks, get set, go!
Inter-house Athletics arrived at PHSG in a flash. On a cold July morning athletes were
scattered around the Affies’ track in their colourful House shirts, stretching their
bodies and warming up for the challenges that awaited them. Those who stood out
from the crowd were selected to be part the PHSG Athletics team for 2009.
Mr Ferreira, a new staff member, joined out team to add some experience to the track
and to coach the short distance athletes. Dressed to impress, Mr Ferreira ran side by
side with some of our girls in his Dolce and Gabbana. Mrs Cÿrus, who takes charge of
the long distance athletes, has helped the girls to develop into phenomenal athletes who
make running 1500m look like a walk in the park. Mrs Cÿrus has aided the girls to
dominate in their field which is successfully demonstrated at our weekly meetings.
We competed against Johannesburg schools such as St. Mary’s, Brescia House, St
Andrews and Rhodean. The athletes felt rewarded when Mrs Andrade announced that
we had new hurdles which were quickly unpacked and eagerly put to the challenge. Mrs
Andrade is indeed the driving force behind Athletics, the mother of our team and most
definitely the ‘A’ in athletics. If an athlete didn’t want to run for herself she would do it
for ‘The Andrade’. The saying ‘don’t mess with the best because the best don’t mess’
would be perfect to describe Mrs Andrade whose passion, commitment, dedication
and encouragement was greatly appreciated.
To the athletes and future ones to come up in the ranks, don’t run against the stop-
watch but run against yourself and the best that is in you. The miracle is not that you
finished but that you had the guts to start. To all the athletes – we enjoyed the team spirit
and wish you well!

Diving

Diving

We had outstanding diving season this year. Our girls put in
many hours of practice and the results speak for themselves.
None of this would have been possible without the ‘heart’ of
diving at Girls’ High, Mrs Jenny van Zyl. Our assistant coach,
Rita Belle, was also a huge help to our divers. As a former
diver herself her advice was greatly appreciated.
Our season’s results were as follows: first place at the Aquatics
Festival; third place at the Inter-high Diving competition; first
place at competitions held at Brescia House, St Mary’s and
Roedean; and second place at St Stithians.
It was a pleasure to captain the 2009 Diving Team and I wish
Girls’ High diving all the best for the years to come.

The 2009 Netball season started off with great expectations. All teams were very motivated and
excited for the season that lay ahead.
As practices progressed, fitness skills as well as the spirit of all the netball girls increased drastically.
Everyone was there to support each other with great enthusiasm even “i-lean” (our mascot) was
there in full force!
The U14s and U15s made us proud when they competed in the St Peters Winter Tournament in
Johannesburg. Both teams were placed first and showed great sportsmanship as well as an eagerness
to improve.
PHSG hosted the prestigious National All Girls’ School Festival and we entered the First and
Second Teams in this festival. Although they faced tough competition, all girls played with true
Girls’ High spirit. Finally, the Second Team was placed thirteenth and the First Team, eleventh out
of eighteen teams.
Many thanks go to Ms Dorlas, Ms Grover, Mrs Janse van Rensburg and all liaison teachers for all
their dedication and commitment to Netball. A special thanks to Ms Naudé and the milinet (??)
