Appreciation We are very grateful towards our lecture Dr Rosyida Mohd Rozlan for giving us this opportunity to allow us to collaborate together to come out with fifty creative ways to be compile together for the publication of this book. We hope that this book can help the public to better understand the importance of the concept ‘REUSE’ and apply the creative ways in their daily life.


Introduction 50 REUSE IDEAS -Beyond Creativity- is a group collaboration work between the second year Bachelor’s Degree in Performing & Visual art’s students from The National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage[ASWARA]. The concept of the book is ‘REUSE’ and this book contains fifty creative ideas that allows the readers to explore and understand, how to creatively reuse or upcycle our surrounding waste into something useful and beneficial to our daily life. The material that is shared in this book ranges in different areas such manmade and organic matter. The goal for this book is to spread awareness of the concept of ‘REUSE’ to public and give them another alternative to solve their daily problems and not just purchasing item from the store and creating more waste.

Fabrics


Batu Seremban Batu Seremban is also known as Batu Selambut or Serembat. This game is usually played by girls. The game reacquires multiple players to play. Objects such as marbles, rubber tree seeds, gravels or objects which are round can be used in the game. Batu seremban is similar to the game of jacks, where an object is tossed into the air, items are gathered on the ground, and the tossed item is caught. Unlike jacks, there is no ball, and traditionally players use 5 stones they have collected.


Cut the fabric into square shape pieces, with the measurement of 1.5 inches’ x 3 inches. Next sew each edges of the fabric but leave one section open to stuff items such as beads, nuts or even rice. Then turn the sewn fabric upside down and sew the top even and horizontally so that it forms a triangle shape. Finally, repeat the proses again until you get around five pieces and you can start playing with your friends and family. Crafting Process


Coin Purse A purse or pouch or sometimes called coin purse for clarity, is a small money bag or pouch, made for carrying coins. In most Commonwealth countries it is known simply as a purse, while "purse" in the United States usually refers to a handbag. The creation of coin purse was so essential, because during the olden day’s pockets in clothing was developed during that why with this invention, is easy for people to keep their money safe.


Blankets have been in use for a very long time. Before the invention of blankets, people used animal skins to shield themselves from the elements. These skins had their shortcomings, prompting Edmund Blanquette to create better covering. Blanket Blankets are essential pieces of fabric. They are cosy and comfortable. These pieces of fabric are available in all homes all over the world. To recreate a reusable blanket, find some small piece of leftover fabrics at home and sew them together and there you have your own reusable blanket.


Foot Mat The earliest material for the creation mat was believed to be created by using tree barks, but the progression of human civilization, materials for the foot mat has been spread out into different areas such as weaved straws or plant like grasses called rushes and also including different types of fabrics. Foot mat is a piece of course, woven, plaited, or felted fabric used especially as a floor covering or support (Merriam-Webster). It is believed that the earliest invention of foot mat has dated back as far as 25000 years ago.


Cut Cloth into Strips, first cut and open the cloth. It will be about 6 ft. long after cutting. The width is about 4 ft. Cut 3-inch-wide strips from it. You can cut about 12 strips of 6 ft. long each from this cloth. Next, tie Strips of Cloth, take 3 strips in hand and tie them together at one end. Insert all three tied ends of strips in the door or window grill. Later, braid all three strips together. Tightly braid the three strips of cloth starting from the tied end. It is the same as braiding hair. You can add another strip in the braid when the length of the strip being braided reaches the end. After using all 12 strips you will have a 20 ft long braided length of cord. Crafting Process


After that, trim the excess length of the strip at the end, by using a needle and thread, stitch the ends of all three strips in the braid together and cut the ends tied with window grill and sew those ends also together. After that, start rolling the mat and start from one end, roll the braided coil in circles to form the mat and use a needle with dark coloured yarn, stitch the roll continuously with adjacent circles while rolling. Finally, continue to roll the coil as well as continue stitching the rolled mat with the adjacent coil. Once you complete rolling of all 20 ft long coil, stitch the end with the mat and you have your handmade mat.


A stuffed toy is a toy doll with an outer fabric sewn from a textile and stuffed with flexible material. They are known by many names, such as plush toys, plushies, stuffed animals, and stuffies; in Britain and Australia, they may also be called soft toys or cuddly toys. The stuffed toy originated from the Steiff company of Germany in the late 19th century. Stuffed Toy Stuffed toys are made in many different forms, but most resemble real animals (sometimes with exaggerated proportions or features), legendary creatures, cartoon characters, or inanimate objects. They can be commercially or homeproduced from numerous materials, most commonly pile textiles like plush for the outer material and synthetic fiber for the stuffing.


Scrunchies A scrunchie (or scrunchy) is a fabric-covered elastic hair tie used to fasten medium to long hair types. Large, elaborate styles and diminutive, unassuming forms are available in many different colours, fabrics, and designs. The creation of scrunchies has occurred because of the need of creating a gentler version of the metal hair ties used in the 1980s. It became popular in the 80s because they were a less damaging alternative for pulling big hair up.


Crafting Process Prepare materials and tools such as fabric scraps the size of 18" by 5", a strip of ⅜" (1 cm) wide elastic, scissors or rotary cutter plus cutting mat, sewing machine or needle, thread, pins, or sewing clips, a simple chopstick for turning and a safety pin. First, Cut a 18″ by 5″ (46 x 13cm) piece of fabric, and a 6" (15cm) long piece of ⅜″ (1cm) wide elastic. Next, turn under one narrow end of the fabric piece by ¼″ (0.7 cm) and topstitch so you create a finished edge. Later, fold the fabric lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long side using a ¼ up to ⅜″ seam allowance. After that, turn the tube right side out and thread the elastic into the casing, using a safety pin or an elastic threaded. Finally, stitch the ends of the elastic together with a small overlap (or just tie off a knot!) and then close the opening by joining the two ends of the fabric tube and you can get yourself a handmade srunchie.


Jeans Apron ‘Apron’ comes from the Medieval French word ‘naperon’, meaning small tablecloth. Since this word was often mispronounced as ‘an apron’, in the 17th Century, the garment eventually became known as an ‘apron’. Over the years, aprons have been worn as part of uniforms, trades and rituals or simply as fashion statements. ‘The main material for an apron is fabric, we can use different types of fabrics to create our personal apron. Jeans are one of the best material to create apron because jeans are very durable and not easily torn up and it can stand the task of time.


Jeans Tote Bag A tote bag is a large and often unfastened bag with parallel handles that emerge from the sides of its pouch. Totes are often used as reusable shopping bags. The archetypal tote bag is made of sturdy cloth, perhaps with thick leather at its handles or bottom; leather versions often have a pebbled surface. Common fabrics include canvas, jute, nylon and other easycare synthetics, which have become common, although these may degrade with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Many low-cost totes are often made from recycled matter, from minimally-processed natural fibres, or from by-products of processes that refine organic materials.


A couch, also known as a sofa, settee, or chesterfield, is a cushioned item of furniture for seating multiple people. It is commonly found in the form of a bench with upholstered armrests and is often fitted with springs and tailored cushions and pillows. Although a couch is used primarily for seating, it may be used for sleeping. In homes, couches are normally put in the family room, living room, den, or lounge. Couch


They are sometimes also found in non-residential settings such as hotels, lobbies of commercial offices, waiting rooms, and bars. Couches can also vary in size, colour, and design. With unwanted fabrics and scrap clothing, we can upcycle those materials to create a very beautiful and cosy couch, this not only allow us to practise our sewing skills but also help us to save money as well.


Cloth Sanitary Pad A menstrual pad, or simply a pad, also known as a sanitary pad, sanitary towel, sanitary napkin or feminine napkin is an absorbent item worn by women in their underwear when menstruating, bleeding after giving birth, recovering from gynaecologic surgery, experiencing a miscarriage or abortion, or in any other situation where it is necessary to absorb a flow of blood from the vagina. The material for a menstrual pad varies from different fabrics and linen. Reusable liners make it environmentally friendly because it won’t contribute to the increase garbage disposal. It is estimated that the average woman using more than 11,000 female pads throughout his life. And that's just one woman, not yet representing the millions of women out there! Cloth sanitary napkins also last longer and can be used for other purposes in addition to being the basis of menstrual blood.


Crafting Process Prepare the shape of the pattern to be made. Use manila card or can sketch on old newspaper then the sketch on the box paper is thicker and better because it's easy to sketch on fabric later. The pattern has been made earlier, lay it on the cloth and sketch it. After the fabrics were cut according to the pattern, arrange accordingly rule. Follow how thick to make. Merge all layers. Make sure the layers are stacked according to the proper rules. After making grafting, punch a little in the middle and upside down. Finally, join all the parts and sewing.


Pillow Case A pillow is a soft cushion that a person puts under their head when they are sleeping in a bed. A pillow is made from two pieces of cloth that are sewn together and stuffed with a soft material, such as feathers, duck down, or synthetic batting (manmade soft stuffing). Pillows are usually rectangular. Pillows are covered with a fabric sheet called a pillowcase. The pillowcase protects the pillow from getting dirty. Pillow case as we said is a piece of fabric sheet that cover our pillow. We can have made pillow case by using different types of fabric scrap to sew together this not only safe us money but also the fabric scrap can be upcycling into something useful to us.


Organic


Congkak The name "congkak" is believed to be derived from the Malay word "congak" which means mental calculation. Besides the Malays, the Congkak game is also famous among the descendants of Indians and Baba Malacca. In the Caribbean Congkak is known as Warri or Awari. In Indonesia, Congkak is known by the name Congklak, while in the Philippines, Sungka. Often, the game uses hollow perforated wooden planks or holes on the ground and usually a ‘buah’ (game piece) using rubber seeds or marbles to play. There are five to seven inline holes known as 'kampung' (village) and at both ends there is a main hole known as 'rumah' (home). The length of the 7 holes Congkak board is usually around 80 cm wide and the diameter of the seven holes is usually about 18 cm.I


In this game, the player will start it simultaneously. They will take Congkak piece from any of the 'kampung' (usually around 7 pieces per 'kampung') and put one at a time into subsequent 'kampung's in a clockwise direction. The main goal is to put as many Congkak pieces in respective 'houses'. One's round ended when the Congkak piece stopped in an empty 'kampung'. One's own 'house' is located at the left end of each player. Each player will continue the game until each 'kampung' runs out of Congkak pieces.


A player with the most Congkak pieces in their 'rumah' takes the win. To create the coconut shell congkak, we need coconut shells. Find some leftover coconut shells, clean and dry them well. Later, glue 8 pieces of coconuts shell together and you start playing with your friends and family now.


Tea Bag Artwork Tea bag, or the compound teabag, is a small, porous, sealed bag or packet, typically containing tea leaves or the leaves of other herbs, which is immersed in water to steep and make an infusion. Originally used only for tea (Camellia sinensis), but they are now made with other tisanes ("herbal teas") as well. Tea bags are commonly made of filter paper or foodgrade plastic, or occasionally of silk cotton or silk. The tea bag performs the same function as a tea infuser.


Tea bags can be used multiple times until there is no extraction left. Some tea bags have an attached piece of string with a paper label at the top that assists in removing the bag, while also displaying the brand or variety of tea. Tea bags not only can be used as air freshener but also it can be used in art as well. Because of its characteristic to have multiple different tones, therefore it suitable to create shading and toning in artworks such as assemblages.


Eggshell Fertilizer An eggshell is the outer covering of a hard-shelled egg and of some forms of eggs with soft outer coats. Eggshell provides protection against pathogenic and physical insults while supplying essential metabolic and nutritional needs for the growing avian embryo. It is mainly composed of calcium carbonate arranged as calcite crystals. This kind of fertilizer is not only organic but easy to make as well. We just need some leftover eggshells and we crumble them up into small piece and bury them into our flowerpots and gardens and there you have it some very effective fertilizer for gardening purpose.


Luffa Melon Scrubbing Sponge Luffa is a genus of tropical and subtropical vines in the cucumber family. Luffa, also spelled loofah, usually refers to the fruits of the species Luffa aegyptiaca and Luffa acutangula. It is cultivated and eaten as a vegetable, but must be harvested at a young stage of development to be edible. The vegetable is popular in India, China, Bangladesh and Vietnam. When the fruit is fully ripened, it is very fibrous. The fully developed fruit is one of the main material for loofah scrubbing sponge which is used in bathrooms and kitchens.


crafting process To use your luffa to get sponges, it is important to choose old, dried out loofah in which the fibres have formed. Generally, loofahs are cut before the fibres form so they are easier for eating. Therefore, a loofah you buy from that store might not have grown fibrous enough. To get the best sponges, you should use a mature plant. First, take a mature gourd and peel off the outer layer. Next, you need to remove the seeds and cut the loofah in 3 or 4 sections, depending on how large you want your sponges to be. Later, soak the sections in warm, soapy water and let the gourds dry out. There you have your own personal luffa melon scrubbing sponge to be used at any time.


Capteh Chapteh game is also known as chicken feathers, chicken feathers or sebuyam football. Usually, the game played by young boy’s outdoors. This game can also be played in groups. The game involves kicking a soft 'ball' hand-made from chicken feathers. The purpose of the game is to test the skills of the player in controlling and balancing the 'ball' for as long as possible so that it will not fall onto the ground. This game involves 2 or more players, usually boys between 10-17 years old. Played in open areas, the only item required for this game is a soft 'ball' made from 14 chicken feathers tied in the center of a thick paper or a rubber sheet.


Crafting Process The basic materials: for creating chapteh are multiple pieces of chicken feathers,1 medium sized nail stick, pieces of tire tubes, formed round (between 4 centimetres in diameter), a type of strong glue, diameter and also scrap rubber / rubber bracelet. First, put a nail to penetrate in the middle of the tube sheets were formed round. Next, attach a few pieces of chicken feathers of equal length around the nail using a strong glue. Leave that can be dried. After that, tie the chicken feathers using scrap rubber or rubber bracelet with jewellery. Finally, chapteh is ready to be played.

crafting process First, find one large coconut leaf. Either find one on the ground, or ask for one from someone who is adept at climbing coconut trees safely. Next, drag the leaf to a comfortable spot. Set yourself up so that you're sitting comfortably. After that, cut the leaflets from the leaf. Always take care when cutting with a knife or blade. Arrange the leaflets neatly in a pile. Remove any unwanted scrappy pieces and any dead pieces. Take one leaflet. Then cut the leaf part alone into two halves, using either a blade or knife, leaving the stalk behind. Next, after removal of the leaf part, shave off any excess scraps from the stalk and put aside. Repeat over and over again, then collect up all the broomstick pieces you've just created. Finally, tie the broomstick pieces together with the rope. You now have a broom.


Vegetables Stamp Art A stamp is an impresses pattern or mark, especially an official one, on a surface, object, or document using an engraved or inked block or dyed and other instrument. Vegetable is one of the unique material for stamping, because each vegetables has its own unique shapes and patterns that can create different effects. Basically, vegetable stamp art is fun and interesting way for children to get involved in art because it’s simple and fun to create different images from just the method of stamping.
