Course Rationale
The course is required to develop learners’ English language proficiency in order to
meet their needs for English in academic life.

Course Synopsis

This course is designed to enable learners to acquire the English language
communicative skills in common situations. It also enhances learners’ skills
in describing tools, machinery and safety procedures

Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able to:
1. Communicate in various social contexts using appropriate expressions.
2. Describe workshop/studio tools, equipment and signage when dealing
with work at the workshop/studio.
3. Describe machines related to engineering and technology field.

INTRODUCTION
The most common way of social interaction is through communication using speech
or language. The type of language we use depends on what we want to say. For
example, when we meet people whom we do not know, we introduce ourselves to
them. Sometimes, we have to introduce a friend or relative to someone we know but
whom he/she does not know. Usually, we use appropriate language forms in opening
and closing our conversation. Remember, it is polite to start and end our
conversation appropriately.

We use formal language in situations that are serious or that involve people we don’t
know well. Informal language is more commonly used in situations that are more relaxed and
involve people we know well.

Formal language is more common when we write; informal language is more common
when we speak. However, there are times where writing can be very informal, for example,
when writing postcards or letters to friends, emails or text messages. There are also examples
where spoken English can be very formal, for example, in a speech or a lecture. Most uses of
English are neutral; that is, they are neither formal nor informal.

Formal language and informal language are associated with particular choices
of grammar and vocabulary.

Contractions, relative clauses without a relative pronoun and ellipsis are more common
in informal language.

What’s up,
buddy?

Informal language is more intimate and social. Thinking of slang terms or even colloquial
phrases such as ‘What’s up?’ as shown in the picture. It allows the speaker or author to be
perceived as friendlier, more casual and relatable. Let me know the next time you say to your
friend ‘How do you do?’ and watch for their reaction. It will be one of oddity but also one of
social distance.

Similar to intimacy and social connection, informal language allows a speaker to reflect
their identity, whether it is cultural or social. For example, the Australia colloquial phrase ‘how
are ya going mate?’ is a perfect example to allow a speaker to forge cultural solidarity with
their interlocutor (hearer).

When do you use informal language and when do you use formal language? This is a
difficult question. There are many situations where both are completely acceptable. Also, as a
language learner, people will understand if you make a few mistakes with formal and informal
language. Here are some guidelines:

1) Start the conversation by using formal language. It is always the safest.
2) Do more listening when you first meet someone. Listen for the words the person you

are talking to. Try to use those same words.
3) Don't be afraid to ask about a word. One of the best ways to learn is by asking

questions.

Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM) Kuala Lumpur is situated in Kampung Pandan which is
two kilometers from the city centre. It consists of four blocks; the main block (Block X), Block Y,
Block Z and the hostel. The lower level of Block X consists of the management and
administration area, meeting room, classrooms, workshops, hall and a canteen. The first floor
consists of classrooms, lecturers’ room, Counsellor’s office, language room, library, Media room

UNIT 2.0: A NEW ENVIRONMENT

INTRODUCTION

People go through various phases of adjustment when
they move from one culture to another. It is also a good idea to
spend time learning your way around your college, workshops
and the city community in order to adjust to your new
surroundings. Good communication and teamwork will go a long way in the new
environment.

In IKM, new students will undergo a course in workshop practice in order to
provide hands on experience about the use of different engineering materials, tools,
machines and equipment and also safety at workplace that are common in the
engineering field. In order to have a balanced overall development of budding
engineers, students are also introduced to team working and development of good
attitude.

Personal Safety

Whenever you perform a task in the workshop you must use personal protective
clothing and equipment that is appropriate for the task and which conforms to your
local safety regulations and policies. Among other items, this may include:

Work clothing - such as coveralls and steel-capped footwear
Eye protection - such as safety glasses, face masks and
goggles Ear protection - such as ear muffs and ear plugs

Hand protection - such as heavy duty gloves and barrier cream
Respiratory equipment - such as face masks and valve respirators

Safety Rules & Instructions in the Workshop

Before you can use any equipment or machines or attempt any practical work in a
workshop, you must understand the basic safety rules. These rules will help keep you
and others safe in the workshop. Following are some of the safety rules in the workshop
that you have to follow.

Task

On 23 March 2016, a machine operator, Uthman bin Jamil, IC number, 961102-
11-4433, from Production Department who was performing his duties at P05
Station accidently injured his head after being hit on the back of his head by
metal tubing.

The tubing was wrongly kept by another operator. At the time of the accident,
the supervisor was not at the station because he was in a meeting with the
management. The operator who was unconscious had been admitted for three
days in the nearest hospital.

The accident that happened on 3.18 p.m. was witnessed by Ahmad Adam bin
Zaki, IC. number 881223-11-6175 who was performing the duty together with
the victim. He immediately called the ambulance.

According to the investigation, the accident happened due to carelessness. The
victim didn’t follow the safety precaution by wearing a safety helmet during work
and the metal tubings was not properly kept.

The supervisor, Khairil bin Amri, IC number 800927-11-2393, from the same
department had written the report and submitted it to the manager for
information and action had been taken.

Course Rationale
The course is required to develop learners’ English language proficiency in order to
meet their needs for English in academic life.

Course Synopsis

This course is designed to enable learners to acquire the English language
communicative skills in common situations. It also enhances learners’ skills in
describing tools, machinery and safety procedures

After completing the course, students should be able to:

UNIT 3.0: DEALING WITH MACHINES

INTRODUCTION

A machine is a tool consisting of one or more parts that is
constructed to achieve a particular goal. Machines are powered
devices, usually mechanically, chemically, thermally or
electrically powered, and are frequently motorized.

In this unit, students will be exposed to the various
machines used at their workshops. They will learn to describe
the functions, as well as how to explain the processes on how to use the machines.

In addition, the students will also be introduced to the language of presentation
where students will be trained how to give good presentations.
