A Journey Towards Excellence EASTERN REGION PIPEELINES HALDIA COFFEE TABLE BOOK
Preface I am extremely delighted to present the first “Coffee Table Book” of. ERPL Haldia. The plant is one of the largest pipeline installation primarily stores and transports Crude Oil, LPG and other Petroleum Products. The main purpose of the book to make the readers familiar with the technical aspects of the plant as well as to enlighten the cultural and artistic signifacnce of the land. For lndianOil, being the 'Energy of India’ is not only about fueling India's phenomenal growth saga; but also about ushering in a new dawn of sustained prosperity built on the tenets of green commitment and social justice. This national energy mandate is the prime mover of lndianOil's aspirational journey path. For over six decades now, the lndianOil energy soldiers have been unravelling new horizons of fueling excellence and bolstering the energy security of the entire country, from the bustling metros to the remotest villages and difficult-most terrains. And a critical cog in our energy network has been our expansive network of Pipeline Network, serving as the energy veins of an ascendant India, helping the fuel reach end-users from Gujarat to Guwahati in the most environmentally friendly manner. The remarkable expansion of lndianOil’s pipelines business is a tale of grit, determination and relentless focus on excellence with which our Pipeliners have risen over challenges and converted roadblocks into opportunities. Many of our landmark pipeline projects provide eternal glimpses of how the passion of IOCians can move the proverbial mountains to offer landmark energy solutions. Today, the 18,000 KM-plus network of Pipelines is the definitive edge that empowers lndianOil to steward its service mission of 'Pehle Indian Phir Oil' forward. This Compendium is a literary and artistic salute to the remarkable journey of ERPL Haldia and a celebration of the significant milestones we achieved along the way. I extend hearty greetings to the Pipelines Division for bringing out this prestige Publication-Building Underground Energy Highways that will serve as a historical journal, especially for young readers. Happy Reading Shesh Narayan, GM(In-charge) & Unit Head ERPL Haldia

Bharat Mata by Abanindranath Tagore Cultural Mirror- Indian Arts by Nandalal Bose The Bengal School of Art Commonly referred as Bengal School of Indian Art, was an art movement and a style of Indian painting that originated in Bengal primarily Kolkata and Shantiniketan , and flourished throughout the Indian subcontinent, during the British Raj in the early 20th century. The Indian art style was associated with Indian nationalism (swadeshi) and it was also being promoted and supported by British arts administrators like E. B. Havell, the principal of the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata from 1896; eventually it led to the development of the modern Indian painting. A R T & C U L T U R E

PHBPL In order to meet long term crude oil requirements of Barauni Oil Refinery, Govt. of India approved laying of crude oil pipeline from Haldia to Barauni for a capacity of 4.2 MMTPA in year 1996. Augmentation of Haldia-Barauni crude oil pipeline system from 4.2 to 7.5 MMTPA completed in year 2002 so as to transport 6.0 MMTPA of crude for Barauni refinery & 1.5 MMTPA crude for Bongaigaon Refinery. Prior to Paradip-Haldia Pipeline Construction, the total crude oil requirement of Haldia and Barauni refineries was received through Haldia Dock Complex. Due to insufficient draft in the 120 Km long navigational channel, crude oil was brought through smaller parcels resulting high transportation cost of crude. To reduce high cost on transportation and to increase in refinery margin, 30” crude oil pipeline laid from Paradip to Haldia of capacity 11 MMTPA & commissioned in 2009.
Indian Festival of colours “Vasant Utsav” at Bolpur, Shantiniketan Basanta utsav literally means the celebration of spring, the beautiful tradition of celebrating the spring festival in Bengal. Santiniketan is the abode of world poet Rabindranath Tagore. It is also about festivals celebrated in its own way, mingling with the love for nature. That is exactly the education and development of human minds within the expanse of nature’s bounty. When Dol or Holi is celebrated across India with great fervor, Bengal’s Santiniketan celebrates the colours of Spring in its own way. On the same day of “Dol Purnima” spring is welcomed through music and dance. Teachers and students greet each other with Abir (dry clours) on this festive day. They sing and dance to the accompaniment of musical instruments like ektara, dubri, veena, etc. The festival gets a large number of national and international visitors for witnessing a beautiful traditional and cultural event. The Ancient Potters Colony Of Kumortuli Indian Tradition of Pottery- Art of making Gods In the heart of the older part of Kolkata (also known as North Kolkata) lies Kumortuli, a traditional potters colony that dates back to the 1700s. When the British East India Company allotted neighborhoods to the Indian workmen in the early 1760’s, they acquired much of present North Kolkata and divided them into work-related quarters. So, Chutorpara was for carpenters, Suripara for wine sellers and Coomartolly (Kumartuli) was for potters. At Kumartuli – the Colony of Potters, you would find almost 400 sculptors etching through clay brought from the nearby River Ganges to create some of the most fascinating idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Art pieces so vivid, stylized and grand that it evokes lifetime amazement. A R T S & C U L T U R E

Pathra: Temple village of Midnapore The Ancient Potters Colony Of Kumortuli Pathra, on the bank of the river Kangsabati, is a village of temples. The history of Pathra goes back to the Gupta age. From 8th Century to 12th Century, it was an important hub for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. A majestic Vishnu Lokeshwar statue dug out in the village in October 1961 revealed both Hindu and Buddhist influences, indicating that practitioners of both religions frequented Pathra. There are 34 temples in the village, all over 200 years old. Today, 28 out of 34 temples in Pathra are under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India. It has repaired 18 temples. The navaratna temple on the western bank of the river is the grandest. The 250-year-old, 40-ft high structure has nine towers and many terracotta panels on its walls. PHBMPL LPG Pipelines (18” Mainline & 10” Loopline) Indian Oil was having LPG bottling plants at Balasore & Jharsuguda in the state of Orissa and at Budge Budge, Kalyani, Durgapur, Maldah and Raninagar in the State of West Bengal. The LPG requirements of these bottling plants were being met from Haldia and Barauni refineries as well as Indian Oil Petronas Private Limited (IPPL) through import at Haldia. The LPG to all the above plants were being transported by road which was found dangerous and had possibilities of disruption. Also, Paradip Refinery had become another source of LPG in the region with targeted LPG availability of about 520 TMTPA. Then it was calculated that the supply-demand scenario of LPG of Paradip refinery could be consumed within the Eastern Region i.e. in the states of Orissa, Jharkhand and W.B and need a permanent pipeline for evacuation and supply to bottling plants directly. In view of above, it was envisaged to lay a LPG pipeline originating from Paradip and connecting the bottling plants of IOC at Balasore, Budge Budge, Kalyani and Durgapur and further in Bihar & Jharkhand. Hence, PHBMPL was laid to achieve uninterrupted supply of LPG at such bottling plants. Science corner- Unqual prowess of India Boson “The God Particle” We and everything around us are made of particles with Mass. But how the “Mass” has arrived because when the universe began, no particles had mass; planets and life could only emerge because particles gained their mass from a fundamental field associated with the Higgs boson or “The God Particle”. The existence of this mass-giving field was confirmed in 2012, when the Higgs boson particle was discovered at CERN. The name boson was coined by Paul Diracto commemorate the contribution of Satyendra Nath Bose, an Indian physicist. Bose developed, in conjunction with Albert Einstein, the theory characterising such particles, now known as Bose–Einstein statistics and Bose-Einstein condensate. Great Indian Historical Triumps It was on 29th July 1911, that Mohan Bagan beat British team East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1, to win the Indian Football Association Shield, 1 st Asian club to defeat a British Team exploded the myth that Europeans are the superior race. Mohan Bagan’s 2-1 victory was looked upon more like a major political victory for the Indians in 1911 over the ruling Englishmen, a victory for the oppressed, and a kind of boost for the freedom movement that had gained momentum since the division of Bengal in 1905. PHBPL originates from the tank farm area of Paradip station. The stretch of PHBPL in Haldia-Barauni section is approx. 496 km. In order to overcome the pressure drop of the crude transported in between these locations, a boosting pump station was required. Hence intermediate pumping station at Bolpur was commissioned. in the year 1999. Bolpur is an engine driven intermediate Boosting pump station (approximately 206 KM from Haldia) in Haldia- Barauni section of PHBPL (Paradip-HaldiaBarauni Pipeline) & pumping HS/LS Crude to Barauni. The pumping operation is carried out at ERPL Bolpur in coordination with PHBPL Haldia and PHBPL Barauni in order to meet the operational requirement as communicated by the Central Dispatch, Haldia. HMRBPL Haldia Haldia is the mother station for both HB & HMR pipelines (HMRBPL) and located inside the Haldia Refinery. HMRBPL consists of two 12” product pipelines with Haldia as the originating station. The first one is Haldia-Barauni Pipeline, HBPL which is presently 528.05 KM long and this was commissioned on 23rd September, 1967. Second one is Haldia-Mourigram-Rajbandh Pipeline HMRPL, which is presently 269.75 KM long and this was commissioned in three phases and the first phase was completed also on the same day 23rd September, in 1967. Haldia -Mourigram- Rajbandh (HMR) Pipeline is designed to cater the needs of petroleum products (MS, HSD, SKO, ATF) required by Calcutta (Kolkata) & Howrah and Durgapur/ Asansol area. Haldia – Barauni (HB) Pipeline is designed to cater the needs of petroleum products (MS, HSD, SKO, ATF, and Reformate) to market fed centers of Rajbandh, Jasidih, and Barauni / off Barauni for onward transportation by BKPL. Mainline pumps installed in the pump station are used to pump products received from the storage tanks of Haldia refinery and Marketing division to cater to the petroleum product requirements of eastern part of India including West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar state. HMRBPL Haldia Pump Station has travelled a long journey from Engine driven pumping units to VFD driven motorized MPLUs with increased thrust on efficiency. Presently most of the pipeline operations are remotely operated mostly automated and are real time monitored through SCADA and PLC from the state of the art Control Room. Increasing stringent product quality norms, impending increase of no. of pipelines (forward & reverse pumping in upcoming 18inch HBPL & PSHPL), and relentless pursuits for operation optimization such as minimization of PCK/SKO qty, injection of DRA etc. have increased the complexities of operations as ever. Paradip – Somnathpur –Haldia Product Pipelines The existing 12” dia. HBPL is in operation since 1967, initially supply products of Haldia refinery to Barauni and later, also delivering petroleum products to Marketing Terminals at Rajbandh and Jasidih. This pipeline is passing through coal belt area near Asansol with proximity to coal fire and soil subsidence zones. Due to safety concerns arising out of passage of existing 12” dia. HBPL through coal belt area beyond Asansol, in 2016, laying of new 18” HBPL was approved. Subsequently, in 2017, an alternative mechanism for HBPL was approved i.e. conversion of mainline of the twin existing 18” dia. crude oil pipeline in Haldia-Barauni (H-B) section of ParadipHaldia-Barauni Crude pipeline (PHBPL) into product service after laying of new 30” dia. pipeline in H-B section of PHBPL. Based on the projected supply-demand scenario for future periods, it emerged that product availability from Haldia and Barauni refineries would not be adequate to meet the projected demand of linked ToPs (Tap off Points) on HBPL, HMRPL and BKPL. Thus, a need was felt for laying a pipeline from Paradip refinery to Haldia for supplementing the enhanced product requirements of marketing terminals in the area. Accordingly, a link pipeline from Paradip to Haldia connecting Somnathpur depot en-route was approved System configuration The pipeline system broadly comprises the following: - 344 km (approx.) long, 18” OD x 0.25” WT, API 5L-X70 grade pipeline, from Paradip in Odisha to Haldia in West Bengal. - Originating pumping station at Paradip with 3 (2+1) motor-driven mainline pumping units (MLPUs) of adequate capacity. - 11 km (approx.) long, 18” OD x 0.25” WT, API 5L-X70 grade pipeline, from PSHPL Haldia to Haldia Refinery in West Bengal. - Delivery facilities at Somnathpur along with scraper receiving and launching facilities. - Pipeline terminates in existing PHBPL crude pipelin Breif Description Hydraulics Pipeline System details are as below: Total length : 344 km Capacity (MMTPA) : 4.6 MMTPA (676 kL/hr) Section Length (KM) Line Size MAOP OD (inch) WT (inch) Grade (mcl) (Kg/sq cm) PS section 165 18 0.25 X70 1158 98.4 SH section 179 18 0.25 X70 1158 98.4 Operation philosophy - The pipeline would transport MS, HSD and SKO from Paradip to Haldia for onward transportation to Marketing ToPs linked to HBPL and BKPL. As per the throughput projections, about 90% of the total throughput of the pipeline would be transported towards Barauni and beyond. Accordingly, the facilities under PSHPL project have been designed for blocked out transportation up to Haldia and further transportation in HBPL. After the commissioning of pipeline, products shall be pumped ex-Paradip Refinery and ex-Paradip Marketing Terminal having coastal inputs. Great Indian Art forms Kalighat Paintings A R T & C U L T U R E Kalighat paintingis style of Indian paintings which originated in the 19th century. It was first practiced by a group of specialized scroll painters known as the patuas in the vicinity of the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. The paintings depicted mythological stories, figures of Hindu gods and goddesses, as well as scenes from everyday life and society, thereby recording a socio-cultural landscape which was undergoing a series of transitions during the 19th and early 20th century, when the Kalighat pat reached its pinnacle. Today the Victoria and Albert Museum in London hosts the single largest collection of Kalighat paintings in the world with 645 paintings including watercolours, line-drawings, and handpainted lithograph.
