North Salem residents are fortunate to have no shortage of seasonal produce to
buy from local farms. Promotions for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
programs can be found all over town at farms, restaurants and well-traveled intersec-
tions. But one CSA program stands out for the person who runs it—a 9-year-old.

“I’ve been farming since I was able to walk,” said Allegra Esposito, a rising 4th
grader at the Wooster School in Danbury, who manages a CSA program from
her backyard in North Salem. Allegra grew up helping her mom grow vegetables
and plants. Last year she decided to begin a CSA program as a way to earn money.

Ask your kids
how they feel

Dr. Marc Brackett to present new book at BOCES

“What happened in school today?”
Parents pose some version of this question to their children almost nightly at the dinner table.
But Dr. Marc Brackett director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, says a more ap-
propriate question might be, “How did you feel today?”

at simple question, his research has shown, has the power to start a chain reaction that can
help people ourish.

“My uncle was the rst person to ask me ‘How are you feeling?’ and then listen to what I shared
without judgment,” Brackett writes in his new book, “Permission to Feel.” at was the beginning
of his awareness that the su ering, bullying, and abuse he’d endured could end. He wasn’t alone
and he wasn’t wrong to feel scared, isolated, and angry.

Bracket will present “Permission to Feel”—his personal and professional journey to discovering
how emotions drive learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, and health—at Putnam-
Northern Westchester BOCES School Services Building (200 Boces Drive, Yorktown Heights)
at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

e program is open to the public. Attendees will receive a signed copy of “Permission to Feel.”
Register at pnwboces.org/catalog.

“We are delighted to host Dr. Brackett on Sept. 25 and celebrate his latest work,” said Jackie
Levine, coordinator of school leadership and marketing services for BOCES. “His evidence-
based research on teaching emotional skills is a game-changer.”

For decades, Brackett has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to in-
vestigate the roots of emotional well-being. He developed a system called RULER, an acronym
which stands for recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotions.

BOCES brought Brackett’s work to the region and now more than 75 schools have adopted
the RULER approach as a result. Districts including Chappaqua, Clarkstown, and Warwick Val-
ley have joined groups that meet at BOCES four times over two years to learn RULER from
Brackett and trainers from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

“Permission to Feel” will be released on Sept. 3, and is available now for pre-order at
marcbrackett.com. e book will be released through Celadon, a division of Macmillan Books.
