Principal Mark Bayer’s graduation address

At this point, it is my turn to share a few words with the PHOTO:
class of 2021. Ordinarily, it has become my tradition to EMRIN LECLAIR
use this time to recap some of my favorite moments of the

graduating class’ senior year. Needless to say, that was a bit

more challenging this year for obvious reasons. Yes, it de -

nitely was awesome having our students back in the build-

ing again after four months of remote learning. Yes, it was

awesome to see students in person rather on Zoom wear-

ing sweatpants and pajamas — oh wait, that really didn’t

change that much when you came back to school.  But

let’s face it, we all know that the rst few months of this

school year, while remarkable on one hand, certainly didn’t

feel like the senior year you had hoped for. Yet, all of that

changed in April when you all came back to school on a

full-time, ve days a week basis. I know, crazy right! But

since April, with maybe the exception of having to greet

each other every day wearing masks, school felt somewhat

normal again. And, rather than a whole year of fun senior

events, we managed to pack an entire year of celebrations

into just a couple of weeks. Starting with the Senior Hike

and then the Senior Sunset and time capsule event, there

Somers HS
valedictorian

Derek Tan

PHOTO COURTESY OF DEREK TAN WHAT ACTIVITIES WERE YOU INVOLVED IN AT SOMERS HIGH SCHOOL
AND IN THE COMMUNITY?
Sincerely,
Glen, Crai an a Ever since I was a small 9-year-old kid, I was also constantly involved in the base-
ball program throughout the community. While in Somers High School, I played the
Har k h ul be e ar e i h violin in the orchestra and sang for the choir.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE NAMED VALEDICTORIAN?
It feels rewarding as I have worked hard throughout high school. But the intro-

verted side of me dislikes all this positive attention I receive.

WHERE WILL YOU BE ATTENDING COLLEGE? WHAT WILL YOU BE
MAJORING IN? HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT THAT DECISION?

Since I was young, my favorite class was math. I was especially interested in the
statistics side, as I enjoyed analyzing statistics in baseball. is passion led me to major
in statistics at Rochester Institute of Technology.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM YOUR TIME AT SOMERS HIGH
SCHOOL?

During our physics lab, we had to calculate where to put a Halloween Jack O’ Lan-
tern bucket to catch a marble from a ballistic pendulum, which launched the marble
like a cannon. Long story short, I saved the lab by including the bucket height into
our calculation, so it would enter through the top hole instead of hitting the side.
However, when we launched the rst marble, it literally hit the rim and bounced o !

e second attempt failed miserably because the bucket was displaced by the colli-
sion from the rst shot. We realigned the bucket, and as they say, the third time’s the
charm. e marble successfully landed in the bucket.

ARE THERE ANY TEACHERS WHO INSPIRED YOU? IF SO, PLEASE IDENTIFY
THEM AND EXPLAIN HOW.

I feel like all my teachers throughout Somers inspired me to be a better person.
Specially, I would like to acknowledge my “phun” physics teacher Mr. Pietris. Despite
the pandemic and annoying hybrid schedule, he would always show up to class with
so much energy, which I greatly appreciated and tried to emulate. I would also like to
mention my crazy chemistry teacher, Mrs. Couzis. She strived to make every student
successful. I really enjoyed having group tables during chemistry, as it encouraged us
to learn from those who understood the lesson, and teach to those who didn’t fully
comprehend it yet.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF
IN FIVE YEARS?

My goal is pretty simple. Hopefully, to have a ful lling job as a statistician or actu-
ary that makes enough money, so I won’t be stuck living in my mother’s basement.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT SOMERS?
I will miss the people of Somers the most. roughout my years here, I have made

! strong bonds with a wide range of people, and I will always remember them and try
to stay connected as I head o to college.
