129 The struggle of Lao People The struggle of Lao people has a long history in fighting against foreign (1):invaders for the national independence. Patriotic heroes and Lao people from one (2): generation to another have continuously fought for the construction and protection of their (3): motherland. Chao Fa Ngum was the first king who successfully united numerous city states and (4): founded the Lanexang Kingdom, which was a unified kingdom (a Unified State). The Lanexang Kingdom had a large territory that encompassed the Mekong River in the middle of the country from the North to the South. In the middle of the16th century, King Saya Setthathirat (5): established the capital in Vientiane.
