03 FOREWORD
04 First and foremost, I offer my foremost gratitude to God for His grace that we are gathered for the closing of International General Studies Conference 2023 (IGesCon2023) with its theme 'Striving Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Education'. This remarkable gesture stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts between Politeknik Negeri Pontianak in Indonesia, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, and UITM in Sabah. The purpose of organizing this conference is to provide a platform for knowledge and concept sharing for academics from multidisciplinary fields in language, management, religious studies, and social sciences. In addition to the contributed papers, I would also like to convey my deepest appreciation to all the esteemed keynote speakers for their invaluable contributions to this program. Their vast knowledge could aid us in advancing more in our respective domains within the realm of education. As we are aware, The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint formulated by the United Nations General Assembly to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The 17 goals address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, and the pursuit of peace and justice. This agenda creates numerous possibilities for researchers and academicians to explore a wide range of topics by incorporating the SDGs into their strategic objectives. Therefore, this conference would hopefully encourage the interaction of the more established academic community to present and discuss the various phases of the SDG adoption model, developing research on understudied SDGs, and expanding theoretical and methodological approaches to SDG research. It is my utmost aspiration that this conference has fulfilled its highest potential, serving as a beacon of purpose for both the participating institutions and the participants alike. In conclusion, my sincere wish is that every participant of IGesCon 2023 has gained abundant value from their participation throughout this conference. I sincerely hope that this event has not only enrich the knowledge landscape but also inspire global academia, motivating them to delve deeper into the various areas we have addressed. With heartfelt gratitude, I extend my thanks to you all, and I wish to see you all again in the next IGeSCon. Thank you. 05 PAGE
06 PAGE Assalamualaikum Warrahmatullahi Wabarakatuh. It is truly an honour for me to express a heartfelt welcome to you to the International General Studies Conference (IGesCon) 2023. This conference stands as a testament to a collaborative endeavour between Politeknik Negeri Pontianak, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, and Universiti Teknologi MARA Sabah Branch. It is the reflection of our commitment to fostering global connections, promoting interdisciplinary discourse, and advancing knowledge in the realm of general studies. This International Conference serves as a platform where scholars, researchers, experts and students from various fields can engage in insightful discussions, share groundbreaking research and forge lasting networks between educational institutions from Indonesia and Malaysia. The theme of this conference holds profound significance in our rapidly evolving world. As we face unprecedented global challenges, the role of education in shaping a sustainable and equitable future has never been more crucial. Our collective commitment to the World’s Sustainable Development Goals underscores the urgency to create meaningful change in every corner of our educational systems. The challenges before us are complex, ranging from ensuring quality for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), addressing disparities, embracing technological advancements, and nurturing environmental stewardship. Yet, these challenges lie boundless opportunities for growth, progress, and lasting impact. The connections we forge and the insights we gain during this conference can spark innovative solutions, drive policy changes, and create a legacy of sustainable development that will shape the educational landscape for years to come. I also would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the organizers, committees, sponsors, and all those who have worked tirelessly to bring this event to fruition. PAGE 07 Bismillahirrahmannirrahim. Assalamualaikum w.b.t, Good Afternoon and Salam PKK Cemerlang. As we draw this conference to a close, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you. These past days have constituted an extraordinary voyage of erudition, mutual exchange, and collaborative endeavours. I hope that the insightful research, accumulation of knowledge, and the exchange of innovative ideas endure, nurturing productive discussions that will ignite further collaboration and drive groundbreaking innovation. The theme 'Striving Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Education' transcends its label; it stands as a compelling call to action that strongly resonates with our collective commitment to shaping a future marked by increased equity and sustainability. This vision is to be realized through the transformative influence of knowledge and learning. In a world where challenges abound, where disparities persist, and where the journey towards a sustainable future seems daunting, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer us a roadmap. They are a testament to our shared aspiration for a world that is free from poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. Among these goals, Goal 4, which revolves around education, stands as a beacon of hope. However, our chosen theme goes beyond passive recognition of these goals. It beckons us to be agents of change, to step forward and actively engage in the pursuit of education that is not just accessible but also equitable and sustainable. It is a call to action, a reminder that we possess the power to shape a better world through the knowledge we acquire and the learning we impart. En. Dullah Bin Muluk, Director Of Politeknik Kota Kinabalu A.D.K

Prayer worship is a mandatory provision that must be followed by every mukallaf. According to the initial survey conducted in the classroom using random questions, many Muslim students left the fardu prayer and could not perform it perfectly. As a result, the goal of this study was to determine the extent to which students are aware of their prayer obligations, the level of implementation of fardu prayers, and the factors that motivate students to perform prayer worship. This study drew responses from 110 Muslim students at Beaufort Community College, currently enrolled in Session 1 2022/2023. The quantitative methods will be used in the study via survey surveys. The questionnaire data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v26.0. Descriptive statistics such as mean, percent, standard deviation, and frequency were applied to these data. The internal consistency of the study instance was high, with a reliability value of =.897 obtained from the pilot study. The findings show that respondents, with a mean score of 4.58, understand the importance of good prayer in relation to the dominant factors that drive prayer execution, knowing the responsibility of being a servant of God. However, the next finding revealed that the level of student prayer execution was still moderate and weak. The findings are recommended so that all parties, including college administration, lecturers, and parents, can emphasise the importance of prayers and raise student awareness of their importance. Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Persiaran Masjid, 43400 Serdang, Selangor. *Corresponding authors’ email: [email protected] Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of community colleges and reopening them is being considered as a potential strategy to improve learning outcomes. However, the literature lacks information on the determinants of intention to attend limited face-to-face classes among Community College students. To address this gap, this study examined the intention of English students of a community college in Malaysia (n = 122) to attend limited face-to-face classes upon the college’s reopening, and its association with the core constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior. The students completed an online questionnaire, and predictor variables were determined by multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that English students had a moderate intention (3.18 of 5) to attend limited face-to-face classes. Multiple regression analysis indicated that perceived behavioral control (β = .680, p = .000) and subjective norm (β = .129, p = .117) positively predicted students’ intention to attend face-to-face classes. In contrast, attitude (β = -.074, p = .149) did not significantly contribute to the prediction of students’ intention to attend face-to-face classes. These findings highlight the importance of perceived behavioral control and subjective norm in shaping students’ intentions to attend limited face-to-face classes. With numerous community colleges preparing for a phased reopening of their campuses, it is crucial for these institutions to consider the varying perspectives of their students to gain a more nuanced understanding of their propensities towards in-person instruction. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on Inhibitory Effects of Marinade Towards Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs) Formation on Grilled Meat Noraizah Mhd Sarbon *, Shnathini Santharaguru , Norizah Mhd Sarbon Program Kulinari, Kolej Komuniti Tawau, 91000 Sabah, Malaysia. Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 21030 Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, Malaysia. *Corresponding author’s email:[email protected] Abstract Protein-rich foods like poultry, lean meats, and seafood benefit from grilling because it is a dry heat cooking technique that brings out their distinctive caramelized flavor. However, grilling the protein-rich food causes char on the surface, leading to the formation of Heterocyclic amine (HCAs). The HCAs interact with free amino acids, creatinine, and reduces sugars, producing carcinogenic organic compounds that lead to colon, breast, and colorectal cancers. It was reported that adding antioxidants as a marinating component before cooking inhibited the HCAs formation. Studies have shown that marinades are incorporated into meat by soaking texture and moisture retention to increase the physicochemical properties, flavor, and tenderize the meat fibers. This review presents systematic literature research on inhibitory effects of marinade on heterocyclic amines (HCAs) formation on grilled meat. Nevertheless, honey as a primary source of antioxidants was seen to reduce heterocyclic amine while enhancing flavour with an intense aroma. Hence, this review aims to analyze the CCA’s reduction through honey in the marinade and meat’s physicochemical characteristics. It was seen that honeymarinated meat showed higher inhibition of HCAs and better properties of pH, moisture loss, cooking loss and colour. This paper offers an overview of the inhibition of HCAs through honey-containing marinade. Keywords: Grilled meat, heterocyclic amine (HCAs), marinade, honey. 1 2 3 3 1,2 1 2 2 2 1 PAGE 36
Updated Academic Performance Audit (APA) Standards: Implications for Malaysian Polytechnic and Community Colleges Norsalwati Mohd Razalli *, Zainal Ariffin Ahmad , Siti Zaine Zainal Abidin , Hishamudin Musa Manjung Community College, 31, Persiaran PM 2/1, Pusat Bandar Seri Manjung Seksyen 2, 32000 Seri Manjung, Perak. Academy of Sciences Malaysia, 50480 Kuala Lumpur. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract In 2008, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) developed the Code of Practice for Programme Accreditation (COPPA) as a standard guideline for Higher Education Providers (HEPs) in Malaysia. The COPPA ensures HEPs fulfill their mission and goals, identify areas of strengths and concerns, and improve quality. The Academic Performance Audit (APA) is essential to the COPPA quality assurance process. Over the years, HEPs have been experiencing developments that require institutional reforms to generate capable and innovative talents for the future economy as outlined in the 11th Malaysia Plan, Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015–2025 (Higher Education), and Malaysian Higher Education 4.0 (MyHE 4.0). Hence, MQA recently revised the COPPA cognizance of these reforms based on feedback from HEPs, assessors, quality assurance specialists, and regulators. Therefore, this study aims to explore the updated requirements of the APA and its implications for polytechnics and community colleges (PolyCCs) vying for MQA accreditation under the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (DPCCE). Currently, DPCCE adopts an internal audit guideline and auditors for Academic Assessment (PeNA) and Collegial and Ownership Monitoring (PK&K) for academic programmes offered at the certificate level. We employed an action research methodology in conducting this study. Based on document analysis, the revised COPPA 2017 has 98 standards and criteria stated under seven areas compared to 181 standards and criteria in nine areas of COPPA 2008. Data from APA audits conducted randomly at four HEPs on their certificate programmes were generalized to test whether the revised standards apply to PolyCCs. In conclusion, the study highlights four implications of the revised COPPA 2017 on the DPCCE, HEPs or PolyCCs, internal auditors, and the APA process in enhancing quality assurance among the polytechnic and community colleges in the Malaysian TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) education ecosystem. Keywords: Academic Performance Audit (APA), Code of Practice for Programme Accreditation (COPPA), Higher Education Providers (HEPs), polytechnic and community colleges (PolyCC), Malaysian TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training). An Analysis of Congestion Patterns on the Tuaran Bypass and Sulaman KKIP Road Networks in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Anbukkarasu Paramasivam * , Elayaraja Aruchunan Commerce Department, No. 4, Jalan Politeknik, KKIP Barat, Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, 88460 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Deparment of Decision Science, Faculty of Business and Economics, Universiti Malaysia (UM), Malaysia. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract This study examines the recurring and non-recurring congestion patterns on the Tuaran Bypass and Sulaman KKIP road networks in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The research provides valuable insights into the factors contributing to congestion in the area. A quantitative survey research design was used to collect data through an online survey administered between January and February 2023. A survey instrument adapted from relevant literature was used to collect demographic information about respondents and identify patterns of traffic congestion on both road networks. A total of 1,483, completed responses were obtained and analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that recurring congestion, primarily influenced by poor roadway conditions, lack of lanes, bottlenecks, and inefficient traffic management, accounts for 52.40% of the congestion. Non-recurring congestion, attributed to poor weather conditions, new development projects, festivals, and accidents, contributes to 47.60% of the congestion. The analysis further highlights the most congested roads during peak hours, with the Sulaman > KKIP Sepanggar > UMS route being the most problematic, followed by the Jalan Tuaran Bypass route. These routes experience heavy traffic due to their significance as major arteries connecting key areas, as well as the presence of construction work, narrow road width, and limited public transportation options. Addressing congestion in the Tuaran Bypass and Sulaman KKIP road networks requires prioritizing improvements in roadway conditions, increasing the number of lanes, optimizing traffic management, enhancing signaling systems, and effectively managing weather-related disruptions and new development projects. By implementing targeted strategies, it is possible to alleviate recurring congestion and mitigate non-recurring congestion, ultimately improving traffic flow and mobility in the area. Prototype System of Ocean Salinity Energy Conversion (OSEC): Flow Measurement and Assessment Shu Kim Lee *, Alvie Sin Voi Lo , Ejria Saleh , Fauziah Sulaiman ,Harry Lye Hin Chong Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah 88400, Malaysia. Borneo Marine Research Institute, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah 88400, Malaysia. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract Salinity difference between two water bodies has potential to be harvested as electrical energy through upward buoyant motion. In view that the potential of salinity gradient power is highest and yet the technology development is lesser, it is consequently intended to perform assessment of salinity gradient power in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Full-scale prototype of Ocean Salinity Energy Converter (OSEC) was implemented at Borneo Marine Research Institute, UMS for performance characterization and kinetic power assessment, using tap fresh water and sea water. The OSEC functions through mechanisms of ‘hydrocratic’ theory where gravitational fresh water is channelled through a smaller down-tube into specified sea depth and its flow direction is bent upwards facing water surface, to gravitationally induce a total flow of upwelling brackish current, through a larger and vertical submerged up-tube. Prototype of OSEC with tube diameter ratio Ddown/Dup 0.20 at up-tube diameter 0.30 m, and tube length ratio Ldown/Lup 0.67 at up-tube length 3.0 m submerged and installed in open sea water where sea depth is 7.0 m, produces gravitational flow rate of 145x10-4 m3s-1, where it simulates upwelling brackish water with kinetic power of 33.9 W at up-tube outlet, and specific energy of brackish water to input flow rate of 2,338 Wm-3 s. The limitation of efficiency coupled with the converter mechanisms of OSEC could be enhanced through up-scaling of apparatus dimension for generating useful power. The conceptual model and hypotheses were developed from the perspective of both theories. This study derives technology readiness as a factor that affects perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, which further results in academics’ intention to use generalized audit software. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) will be used in this study as an appropriate approach for data analysis. This study explores a different perspective on audit technology with academics as a subject of study, thus improving the current literature and expanding the scope of potential future research. It is also expected to help higher education institutions, especially TVET institutions, to produce quality and competitive graduates for industry. Keywords: generalized audit software; technology readiness; technology acceptance model. PAGE 47 2 1 2 1
