Absorbency Spectrum of Dual Band Metamaterial Absorber Nazihan Aziziuddin *, Siti Adlina binti Md Ali Unit Teknologi Maklumat, Kolej Komuniti Hulu Langat, 43000, Selangor, Malaysia. Fakulti Kejuruteraan Elektronik Kejuruteraan Komputer, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, 76100, Melaka, Malaysia. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract This paper study on the absorbency of dual band metamaterial absorber. The metamaterial absorber is designed based on a rectangular shaped for the patch layer and full ground plane plated as a ground layer. Both layers are used Perfect Electromagnetic Conductor (PEC) with 0.0.35 mm. Meanwhile, TLY-5 material is used as a substrate which is stacked in between the patch and ground. The thickness of the TLY-5 substrate is chosen to be 0.018λ to the respect of the lower resonant frequency. Initially, the rectangular patch is designed horizontally, then being rotated anti-clockwise from 0o to 90o to study the change of the absorbency. Thus to study the harmonic frequency in order to developed the dual band metamaterial absorber while maintained the perfect absorbency for each band. Maximum absorbency is achieved as the rectangular patch is rotated at 45o. Dual band metamaterial absorber is developed which are resonated at 2.50 GHz with 99.92% absorbency and 4.97 GHz with 99.95% absorbency. Then, the Q-factor of the dual band metamaterial absorbed is evaluated to study the relationship between the substrate’s thickness against the bandwidth at each resonant peaks. These features have the potential to be utilized in reducing radar cross-section for stealth applications in satellite and radar communications transmission. Social Support and Learning Satisfaction of Tourism and Hospitality Students in Politeknik Kota Kinabalu: A Mediating Effect of Academic Resilience Nina Shenna Kosumin *, Clayrina Julianus , Fredoline Galambun Department of Tourism and Hospitality, No. 4, Jalan Politeknik, KKIP Barat, Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park,Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, 88460 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract Strong social support is critical in preparing students to meet academic challenges and develop a resilient mindset. Students who are resilient are more likely to have positive learning outcomes, feel a sense of success, and be satisfied with their academic results. The lack of studies discussing the effects of social support on students' academic resilience and the mediation effect of academic resilience on learning satisfaction, particularly among students of tourism and hospitality, has prompted this study. This study employs a quantitative approach, with questionnaires distributed via Google Forms. The respondents to this study are the students in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality at Politeknik Kota Kinabalu from all semesters. The data obtained were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 22, and a total of 151 respondents participated in this study. The result of the study shows that teacher support and family support significantly affect the students’ academic resilience. However, peer support was not found to be significant. Academic resilience was also found to have a significant impact on students' learning satisfaction. The mediation analysis reveals that academic resilience mediates the relationship between teacher support, family support, and peer support and students learning satisfaction. This result explained that students perceived teachers and family members as providing critical support. In the case of peer support, students might deem that their support has no substantial role due to the quality or character of the support provided. The findings of the study will be useful in supporting teachers and policymakers in formulating effective techniques to improve students' academic progress, engagement, and motivations, as well as tailoring support for students at the Department of Tourism and Hospitality. Shared Leadership: A Possible Solution for Leadership Problems in Complex Context for Higher Education Masdini Harina Ab Manan , Najjah Salwa Abd Razak * , Ameiruel Azwan Ab Aziz , Mohd Nor bin Yahaya Department of Languages and Cultures, Language Centre, National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM),Sg Besi Camp, 57000 Kuala Lumpur Academy of Language Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), KM 26, Jalan Lendu, 78000 Alor Gajah,Melaka Faculty of Defence Studies and Management, National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM), Sg Besi Camp, 57000 Kuala Lumpur *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract The recent pandemic has massively changed the scope of how we perceive leadership, apart from many other challenges that we face in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world. The fact is that many organisations are no longer in the typical, single form of establishment, with a number of organisations of different nature and backgrounds being ‘forced’ to merge to fulfil certain requirements or to remain relevant - and higher education is not excluded. This paper reviews the leadership forms of shared leadership in organisational institutions, particularly for academic settings. The authors found that Shared Leadership (SL) has good and negative impacts for leaders’ practises. However, minimising the negative impact is the best way to apply SL. Another solution apart from scholars’ suggestions are that academic setting institutions should provide training on SL practices for everyone in an organisation. Any barrier towards the implementation of SL in academic settings should be recognised as part of improving and improvising SL available models using best optimal solutions obtained from talents on a teamwork basis. Furthermore, academic organisations should employ structured SL with specific strategies. The strategies should be tailored to the organisation with distinct culture to maximise the best output. At the beginning, the idea about the study appeared after we observed the problems faced by most people due to their lack of knowledge about the benefits of reusing food waste that can reduce environmental pollution around us and the same with agricultural activities. This study has many benefits because it can save our environment from being polluted and can also reduce the burden on farmers to carry out agricultural activities. In this study we produced this foliar fertilizer from 3 types of waste, namely vegetable waste, animal waste and mixed waste consisting of vegetable and animal waste. This processing uses 3 types of containers/barrels that are modified to filter 3 types of liquid organic foliar fertilizer. This process takes 3 months. Therefore, the resulting fertilizer will be sprayed/watered to the green part of the tree in liquid form. It is different from granular fertilizer that is often used by vegetable garden operators where it is usually sown on the ground or put into the ground. Finally, based on the analysis obtained through the study, we tested the effectiveness by measuring the height of the tree and we found that the height of the tree was higher with a mixed waste solution consisting of animal waste and vegetable waste compared to other solutions. Through the pH value test, we found that all the solutions are suitable for growth because all the pH values of the solution meet the pH value that is suitable for growth with a PH value between 5.5 and 6.5. As a conclusion, the foliar fertilizer act as sustainable and more green environment friendly and it also benefit the agriculture activity either small or large scale. Institutional repository became a familiar platform in higher education worldwide since its introduction in the 2000s. It is preferred by scholars because of its open concept and effective alternative method to share the results of their research worldwide through the Internet. According to OpenDOAR, as many as 6,200 Institutional Repositories have been registered from around the world with various types of software such as Dpsace and Eprints used. Based on observations towards university libraries in Malaysia, they have successfully developed an Institutional repository platform partnership among 20 libraries that have managed over 500,000 digital resources. However, the Institutional repository platform has not been widely implemented in Malaysian polytechnic libraries. While it is yet unknown from the comments from stakeholders and librarians whether it is from the perspective of user acceptance and other factors. Only four of 36 polytechnics and 105 community colleges have successfully developed and implemented digital information services. Therefore, the opportunity is open to the polytechnic library to implement the institutional repository platform in the future, which is a database of unlimited information resources owned by the polytechnic. Various fields of programs will help realise the objectives of the Institutional repository more optimally by using the expertise available at polytechnics and community colleges. Furthermore, as information managers, librarians will have the space to provide digital information services per students' information needs for reference resources. Meanwhile, lecturers will play a major role as the main contributors of material to be uploaded to the Institutional repository platform, which will form a diversity of student reference sources. This advantage will provide persistence to information management inherited by polytechnics and community colleges in Malaysia. Shortly, Institutional repository will produce the impact of visibility required by polytechnics and community colleges, improving the image and recognition through disseminating or sharing the research findings. This caused the decline of the country's economy and an increase in the price of chicken feed. In addition, waste management is also one of the global problems that is difficult to solve and has an impact on the environment and health. Therefore, alternative food from fly larvae, known as maggots, is produced to reduce the cost of chicken feed as well as the problem of organic waste disposal in the environment. The production of these maggots is done using a fermentation method that involves the reaction of Lacticaseibacillus casei Shirota bacteria. This bacteria is obtained from Yakult probiotics. Organic waste from kitchen waste is used as a source of food for the growth of maggots. This study was conducted by comparing the growth of chickens that used three different types of food, namely grain corn, bran, and maggots. Chicken growth is measured by the weight of the chicken used. The results of the study found that chickens that ate maggots showed a much higher weight of 505 grams. While chickens that eat grain, corn, and bran weight 391 and 352 grams, respectively. This shows that chicken feed from maggots has a high protein content and increases the growth of chickens. In line with that, the production of maggots can deal with the problem of dependence on expensive imported livestock feed and can also overcome the problem of waste disposal. Epistemology of Heterodoxy Accounting Thought Aminullah La Bangge Pontianak State Polytechnic, Jalan Jend. Ahmad Yani, Pontianak Kalimantan Barat 78124 *Corresponding email: [email protected] Abstract The text of accounting information cannot be clearly distinguished from financial information. This difference problem obscures facts or confusion to become accounting knowledge. Mainstream accounting fundamentals (orthodoxy) that talk about the scarcity of accounting information are absurd and do not provide an analysis of accounting practices that find results. The financial thrill of accounting information is to read the reality of picking purely on numbers, as facts as they exist in any possible world. Questioning the absurdity of mainstream accounting (orthodoxy) sparked alternative accounting thinking (heterodoxy). Human power is epistemology as a necessity of thinking, everything is necessary in human thought, for enlightenment and continuity. This epistemology is used to discuss knowledge of orthodoxy accounting and heterodoxy accounting to recognize the face of accounting, as far as human extension issues are concerned. Ahmad Yani, Pontianak Kalimantan Barat 78124 *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract This theme and thought are motivated by assumptions about different paradigms of reality, which are crucial triggers for accounting research thinking. Paradigm differences can be addressed as dynamics, a richness of thought that creates harmony. On the other hand, it can also be treated as a conflict in determining that assumption C certainly has implications for its epistemology. These assumptions have brought changes in the development of accounting research today. Egoistic and materialistic traits unite in utilitarianism. Then the three of them lived together in a house called the House of Capitalism. In that house, they live comfortably and peacefully. The main characteristics of modern accounting are egotistical, materialistic, and utilitarian (EGOMAU). A perfect blend to drag humans into the valley of EGOMAU's life. That is a fact of life as we find it today. The character has problems. This character causes dehumanisation of the human self. Humans become economic animals because they have allowed themselves to be reduced to the nature of EGOMAU. Modernism (and positivism as a tool of thinking) understands physical reality (matter) as the "only " reality, or at least as a separate reality from other realities—positivism fences itself in the material world, separate from the rest. Reduction of reality becomes a necessity to get the validity of science. It is based on this mindset that modern accounting was built and developed. Paradigm changes in accounting research have claimed epistemology on the basic concepts of accounting, and contextually, the relationship of expert authority and hermeneutic authority is only aphoristic; the basic concepts will be confirmed as accounting texts and tracing interpreter beliefs. The hermeneutic discrepancy in viewing time, space, and the subject becomes problematic for awareness to determine basic concepts. Accounting is a subject that may have experienced death or experienced a crisis of time and space. The philosophical trail can be from its basic concept as accounting fundamentals. The basic concept is also concerned with the sensitivity of relations symbolically, syntagmatically, or paradigmatically. Keywords : Paradigma, EGOMAU, Modernisme, Positivisme, eforisme, hermeneutik. Using First Language in the Classroom: Students’ Perception Lynne Collin *, Johan Severinus Tati Unit of General Studies, Kolej Komuniti Sarikei Cawangan Sibu, Lot 2577-2580, Campus Park, 11F, Jln Wawasan, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak. A learner's native language (L1) is an essential foundation for achieving learning goals in the second language (L2). The primary purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which students are reliable in their first language. Teachers must understand the language backgrounds of learners in the classroom. This study aimed to identify the reasons for and perceptions of students about using their first language. Sixty students participated in this study. Students completed questionnaires to collect data. The data were analysed using a quantitative data analysis technique. The findings revealed that learning the first language is unavoidable when learning the target language. Students can occasionally use their first language to meet their needs, and should not rely entirely on it to acquire new information. Keywords: first language, target language, student teacher. Using translation in Communicative English Classrooms A Case Study in Community Colleges in Sarawak Lynne Collin *, Johan Severinus Tati Unit of General Studies, Kolej Komuniti Sarikei Cawangan Sibu, Lot 2577-2580, Campus Park, 11F, Jln Wawasan, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak. Department of General Studies, No. 4, Jalan Politeknik, KKIP Barat, Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, 88460 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract The use of Malay to learn English has always been an issue. Some studies advocate its use, whereas others oppose it. Regarding Kolej Komuniti among Sarawak students, no studies have shown whether translation is useful for students with different language proficiency levels. Therefore, this study fills a knowledge gap in this area. This study aimed to determine the extent to which students use translation as a learning strategy. Sixty students participated in this study. This study is quantitative in nature. Two sets of questionnaires related to beliefs and strategies were used to obtain the data. The Inventory for Translation as a Learning Strategy (ITLS) was used to measure strategy use. For belief measurement, the Inventory for Beliefs about Translation (IBT) was used with modifications. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science version 27 (SPSS 27.0). The results of this study revealed that most students used translation as a learning strategy and held positive beliefs about it. As a result, it is recommended that students at Kolej Komuniti should have more exposure to English during English classes, enabling them to think directly in the target language without being pressured to use translations. It would be worthwhile to replicate this and investigate teachers’ use and beliefs to determine whether there is a correlation between students’ use of translation as a learning strategy and teachers’ use of translation in teaching. Being Cognizant of One’s Cognition: Metacognitive Awareness Profiles Among Indonesian Vocational Students Melti Oktavianda *, Hylda Khairah Putri Department of Business Administration, Pontianak State Polytechnic, Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani, Pontianak 78124, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Department of Marine Science and Fisheries, Pontianak State Polytechnic, Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani, Pontianak 78124, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract Metacognition and its advancing importance have led to a high profile in recent research in educational psychology as it prominently concerns the self-consciousness of students’ own learning process, emotions, and learning involvement. However, metacognitively-oriented practices have not yet been adequately recognised as an integral part of the class. Lecturers are often unaware whether students are mindful of their abilities to judge themselves and how well they learn. This study aims to report the metacognitive awareness of 185 vocational students in Indonesia. The researchers used 52 items from the Revised Metacognitive Awareness Inventory to measure two main aspects of metacognitive abilities: Knowledge about Cognition and Regulation of Cognition. The data were then analysed using a quantitative descriptive method. Research findings have shown that from the Knowledge about Cognition aspect, students have satisfactory declarative, procedural and conditional skills. However, the researchers found that they had medium to lower abilities from the aspect of Regulation of Cognition, especially in terms of planning and strategies for managing information. Therefore, the implications of this research are to raise teachers' awareness for generating a stronger emphasis on metacognition so that it can be implemented as students' reflection on their learning process and help them perform better in daily classroom reality. Perspectives of Lecturers and Students on the Readiness of the Civil Engineering Department at Pontianak State Polytechnic to Implement EMI in Teaching Nurul Fitriani *, Indah Anjar Reski Department of Civil Engineering, Pontianak State Polytechnic, Jalan Jend. Ahmad Yani, Pontianak Kalimantan Barat 78124. *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract English Medium Instruction or EMI has proven to be able to improve higher educational institution competitiveness in the global era. The Civil Engineering Department in Pontianak State Polytechnic, must be ready to implement EMI to meet the institution’s vision and mission. This study is aimed at investigating management’s, lecturers and students’ perception on their readiness to overcome challenges in implementing EMI. This qualitative study examines the perception of management, lecturers, and students at the Civil Engineering Department of POLNEP on their readiness to face challenges in implementing EMI. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 3 population groups. The number of participants were 15 in total. The data was analysed through coding, based on the themes retrieved from the interview result. The result of this study reveals that most of the participants are not ready to implement EMI as many lecturers realize that their English proficiency is not sufficient for teaching in English. Furthermore, the management is not sure about the direction on how to implement EMI and the resource material is very minimal with no policy from top management. Meanwhile, most students are not ready to be in the EMI classroom as they were not confident with their English proficiency. Additionally, this research comes with some recommendations as well, such as lecturers and students suggesting using partial EMI implementation in the classroom. Lecturers also recommend that lecturers who are ready to implement EMI in their classroom, must start initial EMI classes. A Study on ESL Students’ Learning Styles and Memory Retention in Learning English Tenses Jenna Desiree Robert *, Roseline Michael , Lindey Easter Apolonius , Aries Henry Joseph , Sazirah Jaafar Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, 2 Kolej Pengajian, Kolej Pengajian Pengkomputeran, Informatik dan Matematik, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Sabah, Kampus Kota Kinabalu, Beg Berkunci 71, 88997 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract The study examined the learning styles and memory retention of ESL students in relation to the learning of English tenses at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sabah Branch. Numerous studies have been undertaken thus far pertaining to learning styles and memory retention, although there is a scarcity of research specifically addressing the domain of English tenses. According to Fareed (2015), possessing a mastery of the fundamental tenses in the English language can greatly enhance one's ability to communicate effectively. This research utilised Fleming & Mill's VARK model of Learning Styles and Ebbinghaus' Memory Retention model. The objectives of the study were to determine the learning styles and memory retention of ESL students throughout the learning of English tenses, as well as to ascertain the impact of ESL students' learning styles on their memory retention of English tenses. The research used a basic random selection technique that encompassed the whole population of ELC151: Integrated Language Skills II (Reading) students. The collected quantitative sample survey data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 25 and tested using the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings indicated that a significant proportion of students exhibit suboptimal memory recall when it comes to English tenses. Meanwhile, in the distribution of learning styles, students who favoured a unimodal learning style predominantly identified as visual learners. In addition, the impact of students' learning styles showed no significant influence on their memory retention of the 12 English tenses. These findings imply that researchers could consider additional variables that impact learners' memory retention in the process of memorising the English tenses.
