Prologue: Violet Ant (1)

“Kumo-kun, what action do you think shows the most ‘decency’ as a human
being?”

The Federal State of Musaia—the greatest economical nation of the world.
Instead of participating in the great World War of the past, it was one of the
countries profiting by delivering weapons and supplies to its allies. The
longer the war had continued, the more progress and profit they achieved,
and as the world was still dealing with the aftermath of the war, this country
managed to grow as an economical nation. Indeed, this Federal State was in
the center of this world.

The city Mitalio, located to the west of the country, was riddled with multi-
floored buildings, the people fully enjoying their lives as they walked down
the streets. With the beginning of the TV broadcast, people would gather in
bars to watch their favorite baseball sports team win as they cheered for it.
The younger folk would take the metro, going to their favorite music hall,
and people would gather at upper-elite buildings with more than 50 floors to
enjoy an advance screening of a popular monochrome movie.

Located in the center of Mitalio is the observation deck of the Westport
Building. It was a building directed at tourism, possessing an astonishing 47
floors. However, it had already passed its business hours, and there were
merely two people to be found. With the astounding scenery of multi-floor
buildings in front of him, there was a man who let out a baffled ‘Phew~’, as
his mushroom hair shook ever so slightly. He wore a luxurious suit, but with
his loose facial features and mushroom hair, you would find trouble taking
him seriously.

—He was a spy of the Galgado Empire, named [Shirogumo]. Next to him
was another man, holding invigorating facial features. A bit of silence passed

after the man’s question, when he himself gave an answer instead.

“It is when they leave behind a testament. By imagining life after death,
putting their feelings into words, it shows that they are indeed human, as only
we hold the ability to do so.”

“Dang, look at all those buildings.”

“…Kumo-kun, are you listening to me?”

“I mean, it’s my first time here. I’m a bit jealous that Big Bro Murasakiari1
gets to live here—” Something scratched Shirogumo’s cheek.

A sizzling sound rang out, as a bit of Shirogumo’s hair ended up scorched.
He fell backwards, and let out a shriek.

“Hold on a second! I was about to get electrified to a crisp there!”

“Your reactions resemble a small animal as always.” The man named
[Murasakiari] held a stun gun, as he announced. “It’s your fault for not
listening to me. After the third time, you should face death.” He was a man
with a gentle atmosphere.

He seemed fit to be a teacher at a nursery school or the sort, that’s how kind
of an expression he held. Unlike Shirogumo, he wore his navy blue suit
perfectly, with a stylish hat on his head. Dark blue pupils could be seen from
the opening of his long bangs.

Murasakiari—He was yet another spy of the Galgado Empire, travelling the
world as a member of [Hebi], just like Shirogumo.

“I mean, you always talk so long about all this nonsensical stuff, Big Bro.”
Shirogumo stood up, fairly unfazed by the previous incident, and brushed off
his clothes. “Well, anyway. The mission, Big Bro.”

“Mission? Were we talking about such a boorish topic?”

“A spy calls his mission boorish?”

“I thought you missed your big brother, and came to see me.”

“As if.” Shirogumo scratched his head, and looked downstairs from the
window. “Next month, they’ll hold the semiannual Tolfa2 Economy
Conference here at the Westport Building. It has an imposing name, but it’s
basically a war of right concerning the business and bureaucracy of the allied
nations. In other words, it’s an adjustment of the Continent of Tolfa’s
distribution between the allied nations.”

“Makes me want to puke,” said Murasakiari.

The Continent of Tolfa is an area on this globe with advanced nations and
colonial rule. Before, the Galgado Empire had ruled here, but this area was
lost during the war, and handed to the Allied Nations. Now that ten years
have passed since the war, the rule over the Continent of Tolfa is being split
between the allied nations. And now, a conference concerning the long-
lasting change of right will be held—fully ignoring the various countries here
on this continent.

“So we’re supposed to manipulate this conference to the benefit of the
Empire?” Murasakiari let out a sigh.

“No, I’ll do that. You have another part to play, Big Bro.” Shirogumo looked
around. “This conference will gather spies from all over the world. We have
the entire spy team [Lethias] from the Fend Federation CIM, and the [Akaza
Sisters], as well as [Kagedane3] of the Byumar Kingdom. Of course, the
counterintelligence agency JJJ of the Federal State of Musaia will be sending
a few themselves. Gotta be careful of [Kirin4] and [Reiki5]. There’s also the
mysterious spy [Ouka6] who won’t be missing out on this event. They’re the
all-stars of the various counties.” Shirogumo’s mouth relaxed a bit. “Kill all
of them.”

“That sounds quite dangerous if you ask me.” Murasakiari rubbed the back of
his neck.

Spies are working in the shadows. How many proficient spies will attend a
conference that will greatly influence the trends of the entire world? Adding

together the counterintelligence agency of this Federal State, there must be
more than a thousand. How cruel of an order to erase all the people
bothering.

“Mindless slaughter is so boorish. Manipulating in the shadows without
killing is the true work of a spy, right?”

“Big Bro, you’re good at not killing, right?”

“………”

“I leave it to you, okay? I heard that that guy—[Kakaribi], the main target of
the Republic of Deen’s Office of Foreign Affairs—will be coming as well.”

“I see,” Murasakiari nodded.

So even someone from the Republic, who had tortured the Galgado Empire
for many years, would participate. Although it is nothing more than a rural
country, it always holds enough influence to play in the league of big nations.
On top of that, the Republic holds an unparalleled monster—[Kakaribi].

Murasakiari showed a smile, and swung the stun gun in his right hand, to
which Shirogumo let out another shriek.

“Again, can you not swing around your stun gun like that!?”

“You sounded so arrogant. A third time shall bring death, yes.”

“…I don’t think I sounded that arrogant?”

“From my perspective, you sure did.” Murasakiari played with the stun gun,
right in front of Shirogumo’s face. “No need to worry—Here in Mitalio, I am
the King after all.”

In the face of Shirogumo’s fear, Murasakiari showed a smile.

“A month had passed already, huh.” Murasakiari let out a sigh.

He waited inside their hideout, a bar used by every member, which was a
location only killers knew of. The small bar counter and faint light
illuminating the surroundings created a calm atmosphere. Murasakiari took a
sip of his coke, he was not a fan of alcohol after all.

During this one month, he continued to kill over and over. The kill count ran
up to 418 spies and secret police officers. Yet, nobody suspected anything of
him. Not a single person should be able to reach where he stood. And, this
very day, he accomplished yet another result.

“Lady, would you like to drink something?” He called out to the ‘Girl’ sitting
next to him.

In response, the ‘Girl’ groaned.

“Ah, I’m sorry.” Murasakiari lowered his head. “You have a hole in your
stomach after all. I’m sorry for not worrying more about a lady such as yours.
I am a feminist, see.”

An expression distorted with pain showed up in the ‘Girl’s’ face. It was
riddled with sweat, and her hair was glued to her cheeks. The stomach she
held in agony kept on gushing out more blood.

“You are a spy of the Republic of Deen, correct? You are much younger than
I had anticipated. Can I ask for your name?”

“……”

“Well, this is quite troublesome. To think you wouldn’t even name yourself
for me.”

A groan could be heard. Asking for the last will, the last testament of the
person is the life work of his. It was rare for him to capture someone without
killing. However, killing without hearing anything was a shame as well.

“Are you waiting for help to arrive?”

“…………”

“Possibly, [Kakaribi]? Oh right, he was called Klaus by his allies, right?
Sounds just fine to me. It would be more efficient if he were to come here.”
“……”
“Then, why don’t we have a talk until he arrives. Let’s talk about the events
that led up to you and your allies’ loss against me. Why don’t we go through
every single one of them?” Murasakiari smiled at the captured ‘Girl’. “And,
at the end of that, I’d like to try guessing—your name.”
This name-guessing was riddled with despair, no hope to be found.
“Let’s start with the details of how you arrived in this country.” Murasakiari
started.

Chapter 1: Results

This world is riddled with pain—

The greatest war this world had seen, the World War, ended ten years ago.
The politicians of the various nations of this world came to the realization
that public fighting and violence would only bring misfortune, and started
using spies for their national affairs, instead of military force. These counties
put resources into their intelligence agencies, and the War Waged in
Shadows, fought by spies, began.

[Tomoshibi] is a spy team belonging to the Republic of Deen. Just recently,
they managed to grasp information about their nemesis, the mysterious
intelligence agency [Hebi], by capturing a spy that held information on them,
as they were on a mission inside the Republic. They found out that [Hebi]
will make its appearance in the Federal State of Musaia, and decided to head
for investigation.

The circumstances this time were differing greatly, as they would not be on a
mission inside their own country, or the familiar Galgado Empire. They
headed to the Federal State,a location on a different continent, with an
entirely different language and culture. From a forged passport, to fake
identities, up to studying the area, there was much more work to do. As
merely preparing for the dangerous mission itself was crucial work, it
wouldn’t be weird for the team to be worn out, let alone worried.

—However, the team members’ tension was unexpectedly high.

As Tia walked down the hallway, a shriek could be heard from the yard.

“Pigiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!”

“…Huh?”

It sounded like someone living their last moments, a shriek begging for their
life. Now, what was the origin of that scream?

W-What is going on…?

[Tomoshibi]’s hideout was a luxurious western residence, called the Kagerou
Palace. This incident occurred on a normal morning, and Tia tilted her head,
as she was at the scene. She was a girl possessing long black hair, and well-
built proportions. With a mere 18 years, she held erotic appeal and charm you
wouldn’t expect to see from a girl her age—Let alone that she was a spy with
the name [Yumegatari].

She headed over to the courtyard where she had heard the scream coming
from, only to find two girls glaring at each other.

“Hah, I ran ten killometers today, so it’s my win.”

“…You endurance freak, I was just holding back.”

They apparently held a running contest.

“Huff…then, why don’t we make it a three-piece of running, shooting, and
hand-to-hand combat? It’s time to decide who the strongest of [Tomoshibi]
is.”

With her shoulders moving up and down, gasping for air, Zibia, also known
as [Hyakki] was glaring at the girl in front of her with arrogant eyes. She
possessed a slender body, yet well-built physique.

“You think you can win against me just because you ran a bit faster than me?
You’re on.”

In the face of this provocation, Monika, with her other name [Hyoujin], let
out a snort. Monika possesed bluish-silver hair, and a medium build. Indeed,
Zibia and Monika were having a verbal fight in the courtyard.

“I mean, didn’t I win already?” said Zibia.
“Huuuh? I was just feeling off a bit.” Monika argued.
“Heh, what a weak excuse, even for you.”
“Zip it. I’ll win next time.”
Although it looked like they were arguing, a fighting spirit resided in their
eyes. It was nothing more than a healthy rivalship. That being said, who was
the one raising this ear-splitting shriek?
“Alright, Lily. Ten more kilometers, let’s go.”
“Get up, Lily. No resting.”
“Pigiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!”
There it was. The source of this terrifying voice laid collapsed on the floor.
When that girl slowly raised her body, she spotted Tia.
“Tia-chan! Save me! I’ll die for real at this rate!”
She was [Hanazono] Lily. Possessing a lovable outer appearance and a well-
endowed bust, she was the silver-haired moodmaker of the group, and the
leader. With tears in her eyes, she clung to Tia, begging for her life.
“I’ll die! I will! I’ve been running several ‘ten kilometers’ ever since I got up
a few hours ago!”
“D-Don’t cling to me, all sweaty like that.”
“This sweat is the liquid shape of my soul! The soul sweat of Lily-chan,
restrained by the devil!”
Right as Lily pleaded for her life, two hands grabbed her shoulders.
“Sorry for the ruckus!” “Sorry!”

With the tone of two businessmen, Zibia and Monika pulled Lily along.

“Lily, we’ll continue our practice. Our job needs physical endurance.”

“Don’t wanna! I want to become a spy that relies on her brain—”

“That is the job of another group.”

Tia watched them walk off, and remembered their common feature. They
belonged to the action squad—the sub-group of [Tomoshibi] who stood at the
frontlines when it came to a mission. The optimism was there, at least.

When Tia went back inside the mansion, she heard voices again, this time
coming from the kitchen. Unlike before, they weren’t accompanied with
shrieks, but rather calm and collected. Tia chose to see what was going on.
Standing in the center was the brown-haired girl Sara, with the codename
[Sougen], one hand in the air.

“Alright, it’s a hundred questions time.”

She possessed very distinct short hair, uncertain eyes like a cute animal.
Normally, she always held a worried expression, but now she was brimming
with confidence. She cleared her throat, and raised her voice.

“The last one is really difficult, you know? At the south-west of the Mitalio
train station, there is the Westport Building with its 47 floors, and the 8th
floor has an indoor garden. Tell me all possible ways of attacking the target
who sits on the bench, in one minute.”

In response to Sara’s words, the two girls sitting in front of her started acting
at the same time. They read through the materials on the desk in front of
them, checking through the various books at their disposal, and wrote down
notes. The first one to find an answer was the blonde-haired girl.

“Five! From the Raiment Music Hall, and the Nyengate Tower. The other
buildings around are also a possibility. If you have a new-type sniper rifle,
you can even attempt it from the Mitalio Hotel. If you manage to get inside,
you can even attack from the control room of the arts hall”, said [Gujin],

Elna.

Holding skin so white it looked transparent, she resembled a doll. She
answered this difficult question, and puffed out her chest in confidence. The
person who posed the question, Sara, was about to nod.

“Correct answer, El—”

“The great me found another possible point of attack.”

The person breaking between Sara’s words was a girl with ashen-pink hair,
known as [Bouga], or Annette. Her semi-long hair was tied up loosely, and
with a large eye-patch on one eye, she held quite the impactful appearance.

“Next week, there will be a circus held at the Kopek Plaza. You could aim at
it from the top of the tent!”

“Wha?” Elna’s eyes opened wide, and read through the documents again. “T-
That’s impossible! It’s not high enough to reach the garden!”

“But, if the target sits on a bench on the northern extremity, it’s possible.”

“There’s no sniper who’d shoot their target from atop a tent!”

“The great me thinks that using common sense is not a valuable idea.”

“W-Wha!?”

Elna and Annette started glaring at each other. At this rate, another battle will
start. However, Sara calmed them down, clapping her hands.

“It’s fine, you both are correct. You both get a perfect grade. Here, have some
sweets as a reward.”

In response, both Elna and Annette looked at her.

“Okay.” “Understood!”

They both nodded happily, and headed to the kitchen. There, Sara caught on

to Tia’s presence, and raised her voice.

“Tia-senpai, you were watching?”

“Y-Yes…that was…quite something.”

“As you can see, these two are doing great. They solved many other difficult
questions completely right as well.”

That’s about what Tia expected. Both Elna and Annette had potential
sleeping inside of them, but couldn’t show it as they had problems dealing
with other people. Now that they had gotten used to the people around them,
their potential could awaken fully. Knowing of this, Sara dropped her
shoulders in defeat.

“H-Honestly speaking, they’re even more amazing than me…How
laughable…”

“No…since you managed to control them to such a degree, you’re even more
amazing.”

“?”

From Tia’s perspective, getting control of these two irregulars was harder
than you would imagine. It made sense that she was the captain of their own
sub-group—The Peculiar Traits Squad, each of them holding distinct
abilities. They were practicing in the face of the upcoming mission, it seems.

After confirming the situation of her allies, Tia headed over to the reception
room. On the blackboard in the middle, she found the map of the location
they were about to head off to—the city of Mitalio. Smaller memos were
pinned on top of the map. A red-haired girl stood in front of the blackboard.
She possessed slender limbs, resembling a glass statue that could break at any
given moment. Her codename was [Manamusume], also known as Grete.

“I’m done looking after everyone,” Tia said. “They’re all doing great. I’m
actually a bit worried since no problems have risen up.”

“…Excellent. Thank you very much. I figured that you’d be the best bet to

look after everyone.” Grete smiled with a gentle voice.

She was Tia’s partner, and the other member of the Intelligence Squad,
responsible for setting up a plan and gathering information.

“It feels pretty good. It’s going along worryingly smooth.”

“That makes sense…it’s been a while since we all worked together like this.”

Tia nodded. They had gathered all eight members of Tomoshibi, which is
probably the reason for everyone’s excitement. Ever since their mission to
retrieve the biological weapon, the team had been moving in two seperate
groups for separate missions, and even ran into trouble after these, which is
why everyone had been longing to move together as a group.

At the same time, their next target, [Hebi], was a mysterious and dangerous
organization, who utterly obliterated Tomoshibi’s predecessor, [Homura]. In
the face of this unknown threat, will to fight mixed with a bit of tension was a
great blend. Indeed, the team was in a beneficial state.

That’s right, everyone is brimming with motivation. Except one person—

Tia felt a sharp pain, stabbing her chest.

“—Tia-san?” Grete called out to her.

She was called back to reality, realizing that she hadn’t been listening.

“Eh? What? Sorry Grete, I was spacing out for a second.”

“…Are you okay? I feel like you’ve been acting a bit off as of late…Maybe
you should take a brief rest…”

“N-No, I’m fine. It’s nothing.”

“Please don’t force yourself. You are the one taking command this time,
so…”

Yet again, Tia felt her chest tightening up.

—Commander. This is the role given to Tia for this mission. She would share
all information she received with Grete, and split up the work between her
team members. Her role greatly influenced the outcome of the mission.

And yet, I…

She felt her body growing cold, shivers all over.

“Tia.”

There, a voice called out to her. Turning around, she spotted a beautiful man
with long hair. He was the boss of [Tomoshibi], Klaus.

“Could you prepare to head out right now? There’s something I want to show
you.”

Tia was taken by Klaus, heading to the administrative ward of the capital. At
a location near the train station, with the Cabinet Office and Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and the such close-by, if you made your way past food stalls
or the post office, you would arrive at grounds regulated by the country.
Stern-looking suits-wearing officials walked around in this stiff atmosphere,
wherever you looked.

This administrative ward offered various buildings that held no connection.
They must belong to lower branch organizations. Klaus mentioned a ‘Road
construction bureau agency’ or ‘Legal department office’, but that didn’t
exactly help either. Klaus stopped in front of the ‘Cabinet Office World
Economy Research Lab’, a small two-floor building. At first glance, it looked
like a location completely unrelated to their work, however…

“It’s a building regulated by the Office of Foreign Affairs.” Klaus said, and
entered inside.

He told the receptionist ‘I have a meeting in room 444’, accepted the key, and
walked down the dimly-lit hallway. The marble floor gave back a crunching
sensation as they walked along.

“Hey, Sensei.” Tia spoke up. “What is this place? Could you maybe tell me
now?”

“Put simply, it’s a prison.” Klaus said, indifferently. “The spy the Office of
Foreign Affairs had caught is being held here.”

The sound of the footsteps changed, like they found themselves inside a cave.
Klaus walked at a certain rhythm, which opened up secret stairs inside the
floor.

“I thought it’d be necessary to meet him.”

Following Klaus down the stairs, Tia swallowed her breath, and eventually
ran into an entrance. To her surprise, the inside held a proper structure, not to
mention fairly modern. If one disregarded the fact that it offered no windows,
it looked like an average building. A wine-red carpet ran along the floor, as
strong light filled the long hallway.

They passed by several cells, but Tia could not figure out the inside of it.
Only weeping voices could be heard from them. Tia’s breath came to a halt.

—This world is riddled with pain.

It wasn’t a question of this being accurate or not. She knew that this world
was cruel beyond what she could imagine.

Klaus stopped in front of a single room, opening the lock without hesitation.
With a loud and dull sound, the door opened.

Inside was yet another single cell, equipped with nothing but a bed and toilet.
For a second, Tia remembered her cruel past, and swallowed her breath. She
would rather not stay here for too long. There, she saw a single man sitting on
the bed.

“Hey there, Kakaribi. To think you’d come to see me like this.”

“Eh—” Tia’s eyes opened wide.

She knew the man. She had fought him not even too long ago, as he tried to

kill her. He was a spy of the Galgado Empire, a merciless assassin. The
Republic had named him—[Shikabane].
“I wanted to meet you. I would have killed anybody weaker than me.” With
dry, blood-drenched eyes, the man glared at Klaus.
He had always held a weak physique, but because of his imprisonment,
almost every bone of his body could be seen. It felt like he was living off air
alone.
“[Shikabane]…Well, they call you [Tansui] in the Empire, huh.”
“Just call me Roland.” He smiled. “I’m used to it, so I’d be happy if you did.”
“Well, ‘you’ should be just fine.”
“How boring. We were once battling to the death, you know.” The man—
Roland—showed a grin.
Klaus showed the exact opposite of a reaction, his face cold and unbothered.
“I heard you killed two torturers here, right? Without any reason, not to
mention.”
“Not my fault if they don’t restrict me properly. I was just bored, so I did it.”
Roland said, emitting no hostility whatsoever. “Not to mention, it wasn’t
meaningless.”
“Why?”
“Because you came to meet me.” Roland stood up.

He gnawed at his own nails, and pointed them at Klaus like a knife.

“Hey, Kakaribi. Let’s do a proper one-on-one to the death. I won’t let down
my guard again.”

“I don’t have any time for that.” Klaus said, unbothered.

“Really now? Then—” The corners of Roland’s mouth went up. “I’ll kill that
woman right now.”

His body suddenly jolted upwards, not allowing Tia to show any reaction.
Where did his exhausted and hungered body even take that much energy
from? He pushed his legs off the wall, jumping over Klaus, and aimed his
hand at Tia’s throat. His speed greatly crossed anything humanly possible.
Right as the tip of his nails were about to pierce Tia’s carotid artery, Roland’s
body came to a halt. Klaus fist stabbed right into his solar plexus, and his
body was flung backwards.

“Mere child’s play.” Klaus pulled back his fist.

Before Tia could even react, the battle had already come to an end, with
Klaus’ overwhelming victory.

“Roland, you have lost already. Your only job is to give us information.”

“Ugh…!”

“A member of [Hebi] will invade the Federal State, and it’s city Mitario, and
participate in the Tolfa Economy Conference. That’s the truth, right?”

Roland let out a groan, as he crawled on the floor. Finally, he responded with
a pathetic voice.

“…Yeah, I was helping them.”

“What’s the detailed location and traits of the spy?”

“How many times do I have to repeat myself?” Roland grit his teeth. “Let me
out. Then I’ll tell you.”

“You think you have the right to ask for that?” Klaus showed Roland a cold
gaze.

Roland coughed up blood, and finally managed to sit down on the bed again.
He grabbed the glass of water that stood on the corner of the bed, and took a
sip. Once that glass had turned empty, he regained his composure.

“What else? Are you going to fight them without any information?”

“What, are you worried about me?”

“Sadly, torture or truth serum don’t work on me. If you were to attack them
without any information—” Roland’s mouth formed a smile. “You will be
slaughtered by [Murasakiari].”

[Murasakiari]—that was the name of the [Hebi] member currently residing in
Mitario. However, with the codename alone, they couldn’t come up with any
countermeasures. Klaus had already known this, as his expression did not
change. With a cold gaze, he merely muttered ‘What baseless threatening’.

“I’m not threatening anybody.” Roland spoke with confidence. “Your allies
had once been killed by [Hebi], right? The corpses should have been
delivered to your country.”

“……”

“Let me declare it right here. You will lose your allies yet again.” Roland
used a strong voice, almost as if he had confidence that his words would
come true.

Tia felt anxiety grasp her heart, making it race uncomfortably fast. She
almost gave in to the urge of considering Roland’s request, even though she
knew it was a dangerous temptation. That being said, Klaus showed no signs
of acting.

“Talking anymore than that will prove futile.” He said, and turned around.

An agitated tongue-click came from Roland. Tia watched their odd exchange
in silence, and headed towards the exit of the cell. She wanted to get out of

this place as quickly as possible.

“Right, Kakaribi. Let me tell you one more thing.” A deep voice touched
Tia’s back. “It’d be better if you removed this black-haired brat from your
team.”

“!” Tia stopped in her tracks.

Roland looked at her with a heart-wrenching grin.

“When the two of us fought before, she couldn’t do anything. She could
merely shake in her boots, running away. Before she ends up as unnecessary
balance, it’d be best for you to throw her away.”

Tia felt her body growing hot. It was the indisputable truth. When the two
had fought, Tia couldn’t do much but fear for her life. Without Monika’s
help, she would have been killed. Even now, she wanted to run away as fast
as possible.

“Right, there is one thing I wanted to ask myself.” Klaus kept his frozen gaze,
turning around himself. “Why did you think of the two of us as rivals? You
are weak.”

“……!” This time, Roland’s expression was shaking.

“‘Destined enemy’ and ‘Life-long rival’, what an embarrassing
misunderstanding, really. What kind of false information did you believe in?
Be aware of your own situation—your life as a spy is over.” Klaus gave
Roland merciless words, and left the cell.

Tia took one last glance at Roland before she did the same. His face was beet
red in shame, as he slammed his head against the wall.

After they left the underground, Klaus called out to Tia.

“Sorry about that.” Oddly enough, he apologized. “As you will take
command for this mission, I figured that sharing the same source of
information would be most beneficial. I didn’t plan to put you into danger
like that, and I didn’t think he would actually try that.”

“No, you didn’t do anything wrong, Sensei…” Tia shook her head.

She understood Klaus’ intention. Roland’s information was necessary for
their upcoming mission. However—Tia had reached her limit. Her heart was
raising screams of agony.

“Sensei.” She called out to Klaus’ back. “What Roland said is the truth. I was
only afraid.”

“I see.”

“Are you really sure that I should be taking command?” She felt pathetic for
how weak she was.

Even so, she had to ask. Guiding the lives of her allies, taking command—the
responsibility of this role tore apart her heart. Because of the dim light around
them, Klaus’ expression could not be seen. But, he must be looking at her in
disappointment. She held her chest, and continued.

“Before…I helped an enemy spy’s escape.”

“……”

“It was on purpose. I gave my allies the order to help the enemy.”

As if he knew already, Klaus gave a brief ‘I see’. This told of an incident a
few days ago. Tia and her group ran into Matilda—who introduced herself as
Annette’s mother, and when she was revealed to be an enemy spy, Tia helped
in her escape. She convinced the opposing team members, and pushed her
own justice onto them. However, the chances of this being the enemy’s
strategy was high.

—’Tia-san, you are too much of a nobody.’

Tia could not forget the ridiculing smile of Matilda.

“I realize now…I’m too kind to my enemy.”

The reason for this were the words of her admired person, [Kouro], who had
saved Tia before.

—’Aim to become a hero.’

These words led Tia to become a spy, and still held great influence on her,
almost like a charm. A hero that could protect their own countrymen, and
save even the enemy. This ideal was nothing but a wild tale, a pipe dream1.
Her delusions would eventually bring doom to her allies.

“I’m not fit to be a commander. The one taking command should be you,
Sensei.”

The weight was too much to carry. During their first Impassable Mission,
Klaus was the one who had command. Through this, even these naive drop-
outs managed to contribute to the mission. That’s why, if he were to take
command, things would surely work out. However, as if to betray Tia’s
hopes, Klaus sighed.

“I can’t accept that.”

“Why…?”

“We lack information about the enemy. Now that we barely know anything, I
have to quickly capture the enemy, so I have to stand on the frontlines.”

“…!” Tia was unable to argue against this calm judgement.

Just as he stated, with the previous enemies they had dealt with, they
possessed sufficient information. Be it thanks to them knowing it was Klaus’
former teacher, or through the sacrifices of their allies. However, this time,
things were different. Who else could take the risk of gathering information
at the frontlines?

“Don’t brood over it too much.” He spoke, gently. “I told you before, but the
diversity in a team strengthens the organization as a whole. Whenever there is
a time when cruelty will save a team, there will be a moment for kindness to
be the savior.”

—When will that moment come?

—How many times do I have to be hurt until then?

—Even though I might lose my allies because of my attitude?

Tia felt the urge to throw all these childish questions at Klaus. However, he
had already stepped out of the building, and stopped a cab. She couldn’t talk
about the operation any longer. The two sat in the back of the cab, and the car
started.

“How about we go for some lunch at the train station? It’ll be a good change
of pace.” Klaus was unusually gentle.

Normally, he would show a cold, indifferent attitude, or even scold his team,
but now his voice was filled with kindness.

“Sensei…are you trying to cheer me up?” A baffled voice came from Tia’s
mouth. “You won’t throw away someone useless like me…?”

“Yeah.” Klaus said. “It’s also my job to care for the hearts of my
subordinates.”

Tia grabbed Klaus’ arm.

“Thanks. Take me to a hotel and embrace me.”

“Can you not blurt out such obscene things inside a cab?” His voice turned
stone cold again.

Tia felt betrayed, and gave Klaus a sharp gaze.

“How cruel. You said you’d comfort me!”

“I was planning to take you to a great restaurant, that’s about it.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll call Grete to the hotel as well.”

“Can you not summon hell all on your own?” Klaus held his head.

“Sometimes, you’re more annoying to deal with than Lily.” He muttered.

Tia felt hurt at that, but thought it was funny that the equation ‘Lily =
Annoying to deal with’ was already engraved in his brain. That being the
case, she couldn’t pull back either.

I don’t know any other method to let out these gloomy feelings…

Now that he had agreed to cheer her up, he had to take responsibility. As if
she’d accept this shallow kindness.

“Excuse me, but could you take a right? There’s a hotel I wanted to see. They
seem to offer an indoor waterslide.” Tia called out to the driver from the
backseat.

Klaus showed a bothered expression, but didn’t intervene. However, the car
kept driving forwards, not showing any attempts of turning the corner.

“Ah, apologies, I should have told you sooner, shouldn’t I.” Tia wasn’t too
bothered, and continued. “Then, please take a right at the next corner. There
is a luxurious hotel there, and the baths they offer are large enough for two
people, shining with seven colors.”

“You know way too much.” Klaus retorted from her side, but Tia ignored it.

After everything, she was fully intent on having him pay for the taxi and
hotel all-together. That being said, the cab driver yet again disregarded Tia’s
words. She started to think that something might be off. It felt like the cab
kept accelerating more and more, only driving straight.

“U-Um, excuse me.”

Tia directed her gaze at the female driver, whose face was pale. She looked
like she was in her 30s.

“I-I’m sorry, but this car has been acting off for a while now.” Her voice was
shaking, and her expression told a thousand words. “I cannot slow down past
60 km/h.”

As Tia was confused, Klaus was quick to react.
“Excuse me.” He muttered, and grabbed the wrist of the driver, pulling her to
the backseat, while simultaneously jumping into the driver’s seat.
He grabbed the steering wheel, and started confirming the status of the cab.
“The brakes don’t work, and I can only accelerate. It’s different from just a
malfunction.” Klaus glanced at the woman through the back mirror. “Has
there anything weird happened recently?”
“Anything weird…?” The girl averted her eyes. “That’s…how do I say it…”
“So someone is threatening you, right?”
“H-How did you know?”
“Just a hunch. Now, hurry and tell me.”
The girl started tearing up, but eventually spoke up with a quivering voice.
“I-It’s an usurpation. I would sometimes take money from the safe at the
office, but recently, a man with a beard told me ‘I know of your sin’, and I
couldn’t object…”
“Couldn’t object?”
“He told me to have you get on this cab.”
In other words, they had ended up right where the enemy wanted them.
“I see,” Klaus nodded. “I figured it out. I feel bad that you got wrapped up in
this because of us, but this is something you earned yourself.”
“Yes…”
Klaus kept one hand on the steering wheel, and used his free hand to search

for the various memo papers catered inside the car, writing something and
offering one to the woman.

“Just call this number later. I’ll at least pay for compensation. Wash your
hands with this.”

“W-Who are you people…?”

“You don’t need to know. Close your eyes, cover your ears. We won’t do
anything bad.”

The woman accepted the memo, and did as she was told by Klaus. Even
during these moments, the car drove through the town with a solid 60 km/h.
Taking a turn would prove difficult, no doubt. Soon enough, they would
surely end up crossing a red traffic light, generating an accident. Everything
depended on Klaus’ driving skill right now. Tia felt a sense of danger assault
her body, and raised a quivering voice.

“S-Sensei, what is this? What is going on—”

“You did well hiding your presence.” Klaus tapped his hand on the co-driver
seat. “—Annette, this is your doing, right?”

There, the seat started swelling, and a girl’s head poked out from beneath.

“I was spotted already!” It was Annette.

It looked like the seat had grown a head.

“W-Why?”

“The great me has a message from Lily-aneki.” Annette’s head announced.
“‘Sensei, if you want us to stop this cab, you have to admit defeat’, she said.”

Hearing this, Tia finally understood the situation. This was their usual
training, their special practice of making Klaus admit defeat and say he
would ‘surrender’.

“Not happening.” Klaus said, still calm.

“‘You will probably decline, and it’s the same as always, sure. However,
we’re doing this right before a very important mission! Taste our growth after
all the hardships we have gone through!!’, she said.”

There, the message seemed to have ended, as Annette closed her mouth. This
should be a dire situation, and yet Klaus seemed to be in a good mood.

“—Marvelous.” He muttered.

He blasted past a red light, and drove along the main street. With but a single
mistake, it would turn into a great accident, and yet he seemed as calm as
ever.

“Yeah, I wanted to confirm your growth as well, so this is a great timing.” He
showed sudden interest.

As for Tia, she would have been perfectly fine if Klaus admitted defeat right
away. At the same time, Annette started moving out of the seat. She carried a
gigantic bag at her back, looking like an airbag of sorts. She headed over to
the backseat, and grabbed the driver’s wrist.

“Then, the great me will take her leave now!” With the driver in hand, she
planned to escape from the cab.

“Eh, Annette…? What about me?” Tia asked, dumbfounded.

“The airbag can’t carry any more weight!” Annette said with an innocent
smile.”Also, Tia-aneki is a hostage, so do your best to hold back Aniki!”

“Eh…”

“Anyway, time to jump, yes!” Annette pressed a button on her remote, to
which the door of the cab opened.

Not even wasting a moment, she jumped out of the cab, with the woman in
hand. The airbag opened, and the two of them safely fell onto the sidewalk.
Only Tia and Klaus were left behind in the cab.

—Why do I have to fear for my life because of my allies’ attack!

“Why was I given such a bothersome role?” Tia panicked and put on the
seatbelt, screaming. “S-Sensei, stop the car right away! You should be able to
do that, right!?”

“Sure can, but what I’m worried about is what comes after.” Klaus was as
calm as always. “You know Annette. She probably set up an explosive that
will go off if I forcefully make the car stop.”

“Please let me get off right away!”

“Let me get away from the city for now. I’ll stop the car outside the
transmission range.” There, Klaus suddenly turned the steering wheel.

The car dropped speed as it slid sideways, along the street. However, it sped
up right away, only barely allowing Klaus to take a left turn. Right before
they were about to get crushed by an incoming truck, the cab raised speed,
and drove towards the mountains. Klaus seemed used even to this maniacial
driving he was forced to pull off, and nodded only lightly.

“…It really is odd.” Klaus muttered. “Why only at 60km/h? There shouldn’t
be any problem if it was a bit faster.”

“I feel like there’s enough problems here…”

“I could easily turn left there.”

“That’s because it’s you, Sensei.”

However, his doubts were understandable. If they wanted to seriously
threaten Klaus, they’d probably need another 140 km/h on top of the current
60, maybe.

“Maybe they want to avoid any serious accident, and limit it because of
that?”

“Noted. Any other possibility?”

“Maybe their kindness of not wanting you to get hurt?”

“You’re saying they hold such feelings towards me?”

“……”

Chances were zero, most likely. Even Grete, who holds romantic affection
towards Klaus, would show no remorse during their training. She was fully
intent on defeating Klaus, and have him get some proper rest for once.

So, maybe they had a different intention behind this decision? Their goal
soon became clear, as the cab left the city, and neared the mountain road.

“A bird, huh.” Klaus muttered.

Tia pushed her face outside the window, and spotted a pigeon flying high up
in the air. He was right above their rab, not seen from inside.

“So a transmission device was not needed, since one of Sara’s pets was
chasing us.”

“I see, a pigeon can still keep up with a car if it goes at 60km/h.”

With the use of this pigeon, the other members knew of Klaus’ detailed
location. What a dirty method, really. There, Sara herself came on sight,
standing on the roof of a private house. She looked at Klaus in his driver seat,
and showed a grin.

—You’re being tracked. I’m not letting you off that easily.

She seemed fairly confident, even though her falcon Bernard was still in
recovery. Roughly at that time, the car ended up on the mountain road.
However, the pigeon was still eagerly chasing the car. Tia heard that it was
merely a carrier pigeon, but it seemed to be properly fulfilling its work now
that its Senpai was off-work. His name was supposed to Aiden or something
along those lines.

“So this is where things get serious, huh.” Klaus announced, as the people
around them disappeared. “Where should I stop the car, I wonder. They
already know of our location, so maybe I should drive ahead and attack at the
opportunity when the car comes to a stop.”

“Could you maybe keep it as safe as possible?”

“If we drive a bit further, there should be a large curve and thicket. If we can
make it there, I can use the curve to spin, and have the car crash against the
trees to make it stop—”

“That’s not safe at all!!!”

“The problem is them, if I had to guess.”

In the blink of an eye, they were driving along a mountain road, surrounded
by trees. Evergreen trees were growing to the left and right, with only one
path, and barely any open field of view. Naturally, the car was still going
steady at 60 km/h. At this rate, they would surely crash into the trees
eventually, so peacefully stopping the car will not work. It seems like Klaus’
idea of getting to the larger curve was their best bet. Then, Klaus narrowed
his eyes.

“So it’s come to this—Tia, in five seconds, we’re jumping out of the backseat
to the right.”

“Huh?”

“It’s not the best chance, but there’s no other option. This car will flip over
soon.”

It was a sudden announcement, but before Tia could grasp what Klaus just
said, the scenery arrived.

“There’s only one person who could save her body a mere moment before
certain death.”

In the center of the road, like a ghost so transient—Elna appeared.

“What misfortune…” Her lips moved.

She resembled a death god. Klaus immediately turned the car, and the car
started to sway sideways, unable to keep up with the sudden change in speed.

The tires passed right by Elna’s head. She must have positioned herself with
pin-point accuracy on the street, knowing that she wouldn’t suffer any injury
there. Nobody but her, who was always avoiding threatening accidents, could
pull off something like that.

Right before the car flipped over entirely Tia’s body was grabbed by Klaus.
The right door of the car was up in the air, and they jumped out of the
backseat. Immediately after, the car flipped fully. Still carried in Klaus’ arms,
Tia crashed to the ground, but thanks to his work, she didn’t suffer any
injuries, merely rolling along the ground several times. However, that wasn’t
the end of it.

“So this is what you’ve been waiting for.” Right as Klaus muttered these
words—

“Prepare yourself!” Lily jumped out of the thicket.

She held a handgun, and approached Klaus, firing the gun without hesitation.
Klaus anticipated this, and blocked the bullet with his knife. This however
was just the preamble, used to safely approach Klaus. Lily’s aim became
clear after she stood close to him.

—From her chest, smoke emitted.

Klaus retreated right away, trying to escape from this smoke. Tia attempted to
follow that action, but was one step too late, breathing in a bit of the smoke.
Right away, she felt her body growing numb. It wasn’t just your average type
of smoke, but rather the poisonous-type, which Lily excelled at.

Tia collapsed to the ground, and could merely observe the situation. There,
Zibia appeared from the smoke, splitting it in half. She showed an arrogant
smile, and fired off a high-kick aiming directly at Klaus’ head.

“Seems like your injury fully healed.” Klaus intercepted this kick, and
nodded. “Then, should I take you seriously for a second?”

“Hah, come at m—” Zibia’s words cut off mid-sentence.

Klaus’ elbow had bitten right into Zibia’s solar plexus—Or it should have.
However, she reacted in time, blocking his elbow with her arm. She had
shown a solid reaction, even in the face of Klaus’ lighting fast attack.
However, that’s as far as she could fight back. Klaus followed up with a
backhand landing right at Zibia’s jaw, sending her flying backwards. It really
seemed like Zibia was at a disadvantage, even in her excelled hand-to-hand
combat…

“But,” Zibia’s lips formed a smile. “—I already stole it.”

In her right hand, she held Klaus’ knife, and right as she collapsed on the
floor…

“Go, our ace!”

“Thanks.”

With a nonchalant voice, another person jumped out of the smoke—Monika.
She fired at Klaus mercilessly. He had no weapon left to defend himself,
hence he had to twist his body to evade the incoming bullet. Without even
losing speed, he proceeded to send a spinning kick at Monika.

“!” She let out a groan.

“A bit too slow.” Klaus muttered.

Tia had trouble even following the battle happening in front of her. Lily,
Zibia, and Monika showed perfect coordination. With just a slight error in
timing, Zibia and Monika might have breathed in the poisonous smoke.
However, if they resisted too long, they would have allowed Klaus to get into
a better position. The action squad sure was growing. However, they were
still unable to reach Klaus.

“To think they couldn’t even win as three people…!” Tia muttered,
disheartened.

“Not quite, it’s four.”

Suddenly, an arrogant voice could be heard. Yet another shadow appeared

from the smoke.

“Showed an opening, Klaus-san.”

There, from Klaus’ back—another Monika stood. She had taken Klaus by
surprise. With speed not even comparable to the first Monika, she arrived at
Klaus’ back, and pointed a handgun at his left shoulder—her beloved
revolver.

It felt like time came to a halt. Klaus was at checkmate. He raised both hands,
and stopped moving. Monika had her finger on the trigger.

“This is the end.” Monika announced.

“………” Klaus remained silent.

Tia on her end could barely believe the scenery in front of her. Monika’s gun
was pointed directly at Klaus’ body. If he were to take a single step, he would
get shot at. She could only accept this reality.

We finally won…? Against Sensei…?

Her eyes were wide open. For more than a hundred times, they had continued
to challenge Klaus. However, this is the first time they managed to corner
Klaus to such an extent. A breeze blew past them. The smoke was carried
away, revealing the other members of [Tomoshibi]. Annette, Sara, Elna, Lily,
Zibia, Monika, and the second Monika, who had her gun muzzle pointed at
Klaus, they all were ready to fight.

“I see.” Klaus nodded. “So the first Monika was actually Grete in disguise,
huh.”

“Yes…” The first Monika touched her own face, peeling off the mask.

Beneath that mask, the disguise specialist of [Tomoshibi], Grete, appeared.

“…Just as expected. Knowing the Boss, you have to hold a certain level of
wariness towards Monika. We used this to create an opening.”

Apparently, everything went according to plan. Only Grete would be able to
come up with such a detailed scenario. It was a perfect example of teamwork.
The one threatening the cab driver must have been Grete as well. The team
gathered around Grete, yet again. Starting with the information they acquired,
the peculiar traits squad set up the trap for Klaus, and the action squad acted
to bring down Klaus. This is the result of the challenges they had faced on
their mission inside the country.

“Now, Klaus-san, it’s about time, don’t you think?” Monika flashed a sadistic
smile. “Will you announce your ‘surrender’? If you don’t hurry, I might
shoot on accident.”

“……” Klaus slowly closed his mouth.

He showed no signs of trying to resist. And, even if he were to, Monika was a
fast shooter, definitely wounding him in the process. Hence, he just let out a
sigh.

“—Marvelous.” He lowered his hands, and clapped.

He gently narrowed his eyes. There was no sight of sarcasm to be found, he
was genuinely congratulating the girls.

“Wonderfully done. Let me tell you, a first-rate spy would have to suffer
severe wounds to get out of this situation alive. Of course, since I have an
important mission coming up, I cannot afford to fight back here.”

“—!”

Because of Klaus’ words, a wave of surprise filled the rows of the girls.
Normally, whenever they would get to a situation close to this, Klaus would
turn things around with his overwhelming skill as a spy. However, there were
no signs of that here. Klaus showed no suspicious action whatsoever. If
anything, he looked truly astonished and delighted.

“You did well coming this far. I knew you had limitless talent sleeping inside
of you.” Klaus gave the girls a gentle gaze. “First, Annette. Your work with
the car was magnificent, but the way you managed to stay hidden inside the

need.”

“If it’s Aniki’s order, the great me will follow it without a doubt!” Annette
gave a happy response, jumping in joy.

“Next, Sara. This is about what I expected from your animal training skill.
You should hold more confidence. In the midst of a spy team, your kindness
is a great value, not just your talent.”

“I-I will try my best.” Sara answered, as tense as ever.

“Elna. Your skill is still a sight to behold. Nobody else would be able to play
with the enemy as much as you can. I’m sure that a lot of hardships will await
you, but I want you to stay strong.”

“If it’s with Sensei, then Elna doesn’t mind at all.” She responded with a
delighted smile.

After talking to the three youngest girls in the team, Klaus next directed his
attention at the other members.

“Lily, Zibia, Monika, you are the core of the team. Your heroic deeds of
jumping onto the frontlines will become the pillar for the other members, and
strengthen their hearts. It’s not advisable to get too elevated, but anything
fine as long as it will give you strength.”

“Yes, leave it to the genius Lily-chan.” Lily puffed out her chest.

“Yeah, keep up your expectations.” Zibia answered.

“Don’t put me together with these two idiots.” Monika gave a displeased
response.

Klaus nodded, and looked at the next girl.

“Now, Grete, regarding you—”

“You needn’t say anything, your feelings have reached me, Boss—” Grete
