ANNUAL LETTER

Dear Friends, Supporters and Partners,

On behalf of everyone at Tanzania Rural Health Movement, I’d like to wish
you a happy new year.

When we founded TRHM over five years ago, we could never have imagined
we’d be where we are today. Through our Community Medical Emergency
Response Program, we reach hundreds of people across the Mwanza and
Iringa regions who need immediate emergency care, and we care for homeless
people through our Street Medicine Program.

This would not have been possible without your generous support. It is with
deep gratitude and a sense of mission that the local and international
volunteers, staff, partners and supporters wake up every day and work to
support our lifesaving programs.

2019 marked a milestone for us at TRHM as we made a strategic decision to
improve healthcare services by beginning construction of a medical facility. In
January 2020, our Street Medicine Program began serving all homeless
individuals regardless of their age, and we are excited to increase healthcare
services coverage to this group. We are also working on launching toll-free
number 0800-750-112 to support our pre-hospital care services coverage in
the Mwanza region.

I am so motivated for the year ahead and so thankful to everyone: our team,
our board of directors, our supporters and partners for sharing the vision of
TRHM.

Wishing you all a happy, safe, healthy and prosperous new year!

New Strategic Direction

TRHM has established a five-year strategic direction to align
our vision and mission with Sustainable Development Goal
Three. We aim to reduce the number of deaths and injuries
from road traffic accidents and aim to support universal
health coverage to vulnerable communities in Tanzania by
increasing access to quality essential healthcare services.

Mission Statement
TRHM works to establish model
healthcare services by continuously providing and improving
innovative hands-on medical services in all its endeavors in

Tanzania.

Vision Statement
TRHM aspires to
excellence in the provision of equal healthcare services to
underserved communities so people all over Tanzania can live
longer, healthier and happier lives.

Core Values
Excellence: We do our best at all times and look for ways to
improve our programs and ensure they are of high quality and
are effective and efficient in nature.

Integrity: TRHM consistently works in a spirit of mutual trust,
honesty, transparency and accountability.

Partnership: TRHM works respectfully in collaboration with
local government, communities, the private sector and donors
bringing together a unique platform to achieve common
objectives.

Teamwork: TRHM board, staff and volunteers work on the
basis of mutual respect and accountability, dialogue and
collaboration.

The five-year strategic plan (2018-2023) focuses on improving
healthcare access to underserved populations and creating
and maintaining a high quality partnership and collaboration
with the government and other organizations.

Medical Dispensary Construction Project

Currently, under our Street Medicine Program, we provide services to 15 clients
each week with various medical conditions such as wounds, typhoid, and malaria.
With the completion of this project, we can increase this number to 15 clients per
day, and each client will receive all services under a single and solid roof.
A control room for dispatching emergency aid will enable us to increase our
response rate to emergencies including pediatric, obstetric, and trauma
emergencies from 20 to 60 incidents per month.

Street Medicine Project

The Street Medicine Project, a wound care project for street children, is a volunteer-based
outreach program to provide relief and prolong life by providing free healthcare services to
street-connected individuals within Mwanza city.
The outreach package includes free services such as consultation to ensure rational use of
medicines, wound care and treatment, intestinal worms screening and treatment, and health
promotion.
I

In 2019, we provided 600 homeless children with schistosomiasis screening and treatment,
wound care services, consultation to nearby facilities for further definitive care and health
promotion (awareness on the hepatitis virus).
In 2020, we will continue to provide healthcare services and to support definitive care to
street-connected individuals (mainly children and elderly people). Also, we will increase the
coverage of healthcare services to remote areas through outreach programs.

Community Medical Emergency Response Project

In 2019, TRHM in collaboration with Trek Medics International evaluated the program's performance
over three years to understand the program gaps and impact in Mwanza communities.

Challenges and the way forward
The main challenge is acquiring funding to meet the program's demand as we are trying to build and
scale a municipal system on a bootstrap budget.
Another challenge is low data compliance rates by volunteers due to the fact that the responders are
responsible for paying for their own data and SMS plans. In other words, the responders are having to
spend their own money in order to provide volunteer emergency care and transport.
To address these challenges, TRHM is seeking an annual grant of U.S. $25,000 and one ambulance.
We will dedicate these resources to public outreach and education, increased training for existing and
new community responders and medical resources.
With the right support, we are confident this program can serve as a replicable model for cities across
Tanzania interested in setting up their own public pre-hospital system. TRHM is committed to support
the creation of new systems by sharing training curricula, reports and technical expertise in this
emerging specialty.

Research Development
Research is a key component in our programs. It helps us to evaluate our programs, and it
serves as a learning platform to the undergraduate and postgraduate students in Tanzania
and abroad.
In early 2019, we hosted Casey who evaluated the Mwanza Community First Response
Program's performance since its inception in 2015. Her evaluation helped us to develop
new strategies to ensure the program's sustainable development.
Also, the team at TRHM has been involved in the dissemination of research findings and
program experiences through panel discussions and presentations at conferences in Kenya,
Uganda and Tanzania.

We continue to strengthen our programs through research development and by fostering
collaboration with other partners both locally and abroad in developing and conducting
research.
Students interested in pursuing their elective research studies with TRHM can email their
request to [email protected] or through WhatsApp +255 783 090 370.
