and respect

VISION

To become a world class
education centre that is
innovative and blessed.

Assalamualaikum and greetings to all.

First and foremost, praise to The Almighty for allowing success in publishing “The Laureate”
2020. I would also like to express my gratitude and congratulate everyone who contributed in any
way to the production of this book, especially to the advisors and Editorial Board of the Laureate
Club; without their dedication, we would not be reading this fantastic piece.

I believe that our situation in 2020 should be addressed. Of course, it was mind boggling to receive
news that due to a pandemic, the IB exam would be cancelled. I know that the news sparked many
kinds of emotions- relief, sadness, even fear. After all, the results would be taken solely from the
academic writing you have all submitted. Nevertheless, I am proud of all your effort. Surviving 2
years of hectic lifestyles and meeting deadlines is nothing to scoff at. KMB is proud of you.

I hope that none of you will see this as a failure or think of your “unfinished” IB journey as a waste,
because it is most definitely not. Keep everything you learned throughout your life here in KMB and
use it to continue your journey. This is only the beginning to a very new chapter in your life, and as
difficult as it will get, have faith in Him and push through.

Do not forget to thank the teachers and friends who stood by you through thick and thin. I trust
that Invicta has made many irreplaceable memories that will continue to live on even as time
passes, and the bonds you have found in KMB, as far as they may be, will continue to be sturdy
anchors that will keep you grounded when the going gets tough.

I sincerely hope that only clear waters are ahead of you,
and I hope that your 2 years in KMB will help you through
the storms you will encounter in life. Grab onto the
opportunities as they appear, and never be scared to take
that next step. Never forget to maintain a strong faith in
your religion and God, for He is the mastermind behind all
your trials and tribulations. Lastly, do keep in touch with the
teachers and the college as I am sure we would all be happy
to hear about your future successes.

I hope that The Laureate will take you down
memory lane and allow you to reminisce your IB
life. And if you miss KMB, you know where we will
always be; ready to greet you with open arms and
bright smiles.

Best wishes for a brilliant future.

Dr Roselena Mansor

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

First and foremost, I wish to extend my utmost gratitude to The Most Gracious for giving me the
opportunity to express my final thoughts on our journey as of becoming a KMBean. Before that,
kudos to the Laureate Team for producing this stunning and beautiful piece of art in the form of
a magazine for us all. To start it off,

To all my friends,

Our journey as an IB student has reached its final destination. The expedition has been full of
surprises, tough times, nerve-wracking moments, frustrations, energy-draining work, and even
traumatic experiences at some point. Delving into the brighter side of things, we’ve not only
shaped ourselves into becoming an all-rounder, but the most important thing is we’ve developed
a close relationship between ourselves and our friends regardless of the difference in our future
endeavours. And that, to me, is the most valuable thing that I could ever wish for as the President
of Invicta 18/20.

Dear teachers,

The very reason we still maintain our sanity despite the hardships faced in the IB is because
you’ve made a positive difference in our lives. Your never-ending motivation was and always will
be the drive to our accomplishments in the past, present, future and beyond.
Your sacrifices were as gruelling as ours just to ensure that we’d become a
great human being just like you. Nothing could ever repay the kindness
and deeds you’ve blessed upon our lives. And for that, thank you.

Before I end my speech, to my dearest Invicta family, thank you for
always being there for each other and for being a solid support
system for not only me, but to others as well. My days here were
made more bearable and meaningful with you guys in mind. I
believe the rough patches that we have endured and experienced will
always be a blessing in disguise for each and every one of us and it’ll
be the epitome of our student-lives in KMB. From this moment
onwards, our paths will surely diverge from one another, but I hope
that when we recapture our past, we would always remember that
our paths had once crossed each other’s here in KMB.

Assalamualaikum W.B.T and greetings,

Before I begin, I would like to praise Him the most Gracious and most Merciful for blessing us with
the completion and publishing of this edition of the Laureate.

First and most importantly, I would like to express my gratitude towards the advisors, Miss
Shereen, Miss Azlinawaty and Miss Shik, for their expertise when guiding us throughout the
strenuous process of creating this magazine. Next, I would like to extend my appreciation to the
backbone of this magazine, my fellow laureate members. Thank you for sacrificing your precious
time and energy to produce this magazine together from the ground up. Not to forget, thank you
Invicta for your full cooperation and your willingness in providing the Laureate members with
sufficient material to work with. Thanks to all of you, the completion of this magazine is made
possible.

This edition of the laureate is not your typical magazine. This is a digital magazine. Receiving this
may not feel as nostalgic as accepting a yearbook during the graduation ceremony but it is still an
exceptional substitute. You can bring it around without the hassle of extra weight, it will not
experience wear and tear, and most importantly, you will never lose it! (as long as you have
internet connection)

It is well agreed among the IB community that friends are what makes the struggle of an IB
student bearable. So, it must be hard to part with your fellow friends in such circumstances,
without any chance to bid a proper farewell. Let this digital magazine be a testimony to the
undying bond of friendship you share. This memento will not age as the years go by. So, do ensure
that the vibrant memories will stay as evergreen as this magazine.

Me and my team really gave it our all in the attempt to
summarise the two delightful years you spent in KMB. We hope
that you will have a blast swiping through the rest of the
magazine. The laureate team would like to congratulate on your
newly earned title of ‘IB Survivor’. This end marks a new
beginning, a new chapter, a new story, and if you’re blessed, in
a new country. Godspeed Invicta in your future endeavours
regardless of which path you end up following. No matter how
bleak things currently are, be reminded that there is always
rainbow at the end of the storm.

1. How did you feel when you found out that the IB exam was cancelled due
to Covid-19?
I was very shocked and scared because to be graded wholely on your coursework is not a
beneficial thing, especially for Malaysian students as our previous education is more of exam
based. Moreover, it was a bit too sudden. Nothing was decided at the moment. The teachers also
did not know the verdict from IBO. Those things made me scared but on the bright side, it was
nice to have a longer holiday!! Hahahaha

2. Your IB results were completely determined by your IA’s, EE’s, and TOK essay.
What were some of your tips to score well on those?

I would say planning is very important. The key thing here is the topic that you choose. For me, it is vital for you to
choose something that you like because the journey of completing the coursework is hard. You'll have to research a
lot, and reading those journals is not easy. If you like the topic of your research paper, you'll be motivated to gain
further understanding about it. Second, consultation with your teachers/advisor. Never run from your teacher. It
takes several drafts for your IAs or EE to be accepted. Consulting your teacher will be a great help as they know
better than us. Last but not least, try your best to follow the deadline. If you procrastinate it, you might neglect the
quality of your work.

*Side note : In my opinion, having great friends helped me a lot as well. Other than providing emotional support,
they helped me by going through my research papers and comment on the parts that they don't understand. This
allowed me to brainstorm better and gain more ideas. Therefore, do help each other throughout the IB journey!!

3. What were some challenges that you most remember in surviving IB and how did you destress?

I think the biggest challenge for an IB student will be time management. This is because we have to work on our
coursework, study for exams and on top of that we have CAS. Sometimes, all of these were scheduled on the same
day. It was hectic I must say. However, personally for me, it's my EE. I did EE on World Studies where I chose
Chemistry and Economics as the interdisciplinary subjects. But the problem is I've never taken/studied Economics
before or during my IB as well. I need to take time study on this subject, asked my friends that took the subject.
Unfortunately, after I finished my full draft, one of my friends told me that the Econs part of my essay was totally
wrong. She told me that I need to reconstruct my research question. It was terrifying, thinking that I might need to
do it all over again in a short amount of time with all other IAs' and TOK's deadlines coming soon. But luckily, with
help from my advisor and friends, I could overcome the problems and sent my works on time.

My biggest support system is my family. I'll make sure that I call my mother frequently. But, most of the times, my
friends helped a lot. We always talk about things that were bothering us. Spare times for each others especially
during hard times. I believe that we should have a balance lifestyle. When I'm stress or stuck, I'll go out with my
friends to breathe some fresh air. Having good and positive friends is very important. They'll help you go through
hard times better.

4. What are some survival tips you’d like to leave for your juniors who are taking IB
/for those who will be taking IB?

I would say manage your time wisely, surround yourself with good/positive friends and make sure to always
motivate yourself. Don't pressure yourselves so much. Study is important but the point of doing IB is to be a
balanced individual who is both book and street smart. Always do things that you love instead of following people.
Choose your subjects combination, IAs' topic and EE based on your capabilities and interests. Don't be influenced
by other people. You might hear from others that this subject is harder than the other one or you can score EE if you
choose this subject. Those are others' opinions. It might not suit you. Therefore, know yourself and do what you
like. You can take a pinch of salt of those opinions. Stay strong and never give up!! If others can do it, why not you.
Do not compare yourself to others because you're special in your own way.

5. If you are given a chance to sit for the final IB exam, would you do it?

Yes, especially before I knew my results. Like I said previously, we were not familiar with research before doing IB.
Hence, to fully depend on the coursework, it is a huge risk. Moreover, from the start, we were aware of how IB
diploma is graded. So all of us were rushing to finish the IAs, EE and TOK as soon as possible to get more time to
focus on our studies. To be honest, before getting the results, I don't know what to expect because coursework is not
like an exam where you can predict a little on your performance. As it was a sudden decision from IBO, we didn't
have enough time to redo them again or anything.

Therefore, a small advice to the juniors, do not take your coursework lightly because life is unpredictable. Focus on
everything and manage your time wisely

1. How did you feel when you found out that the IB exam was cancelled
due to Covid-19?
At first I was really excited because I was super anxious for exams. There was around a
month left until the IB exams and I felt like I wasn't ready, but when I found out the grades
were determined by an algorithm based on my IAs, I started getting mixed feelings because
I genuinely didn't know what to expect for my results.

2. Your IB results were completely determined by your IA’s, EE’s, and TOK
essay. What were some of your tips to score well on those?

Honestly I struggled with them myself. Generally, my biggest tip is to always consult your teachers,
because teachers know best! Jangan la lari hahah the teachers only want to help you. Choose a topic
that interests you because you're going to be looking at it for hours, so you might as well enjoy it.

When you have so many assignments, time management is really important. Cliché, but it's true.
Don't put them off because they're only going to pile up.

Help your friends out and don't be afraid to ask them for help too. When you help others you'll get to
learn from their IAs as well. IB isn't an individual race, it's us against IB gituhh. My friends helped
me tremendously, and I'm really grateful because I definitely couldn't have done well without them.

Specifically for science IA's, I would recommend choosing an interesting topic with a methodology
that is still feasible to carry out in a limited time. Sometimes experiments don't work out, and it's
easy to feel discouraged but don't be!! It happens and trust me in the end things will work out, you
just have to push yourself a bit more.

3. What were some challenges that you most remember in surviving IB and
how did you destress?

I think each semester brought different challenges for me. In sem 1, I was struggling to fit in and
adapting to life in kmb. In sem 2 and sem 3, I was figuring out ideas for IAs which personally was the
hardest part of the process. My final sem was the most challenging, as days went by closer to IB
exams, my mental health was slowly degrading. There were a lot of days where I didn't want to get
out of bed to class and just felt like giving up. In sem 4 time really does go by quickly, it was just a
struggle to keep myself together in balancing between refining all IAs, TOK essay and EE, self-study
as well as making time for IRP out of academic hours with everything going on in my personal life.
Support from family, friends and teachers were definitely what kept me pushing forward.

I destress by sleeping. I sleep a lot, and if I had to say I had a key to "success" this would be it. The
brain needs to rest too. If I'm not sleeping, I'm probably spending time talking and laughing with
my friends.

4. What are some survival tips you would like to leave for your juniors who are
taking IB/ for those who will be taking IB?

Take care of yourself — physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Get enough sleep, eat well,
enjoy your time with your friends. It's okay to take breaks. Work at your own pace (but not too slow
hahah don't deviate from your teachers' deadline). Make the best out of your IB journey, it's not an
easy one and it may seem like there's no light at the end of the tunnel, but I promise you there is.

5. If you are given a chance to sit for the final IB exam, would you do it?

I probably would just to get a sense of closure and the feeling of being done with the exams.

G4 Project

It’s a week where people get creative in their science minds. Students are as-
signed in groups and are tasked to do an experiment. The experiments are based

on the science subject they have decided. In order to do well in this program,
students must utilize all of the lessons they learned in class in their projects.
With only a limited time given, each group must think fast in doing their projects.

After designing their projects, they will present them to the others for feedback.
Students have designed many interesting experiments that are differ to each other.

Teachers were satisfied with the overall outcome of the program. It is hoped that
the program will help students in understanding the subjects they learned in class

even more.
