MEASUREMENT OF BRICKWORK Brickwork generally is measured as square metre, taking the mean girth of the wall by the height. The heights of walls often vary within the same building but it is usually possible to measure to some general level, such as the main eaves, and then to add for gables etc. No deduction are made for voids within the area of brickwork not exceeding 0.10m2. However deduction shall be made for lintels of door and window, door, window, stiffener etc.
STIFFENER Stiffener elements can be used to model beams or columns that are embedded in the wall to increase its structural capacity, e.g. lintels, pilasters, and boundary elements of shear walls. The stiffener column shall be provided at the corners & ends of the block work.
DAMP PROOF COURSE Ground water can penetrate the building fabric, rising vertically through capillary action. Damp-proof course (DPC) should be provided in masonry walls to guard against such ground moisture. To protect against rainwater bouncing off the ground and splashing onto the wall, the DPC should be installed at a minimum 150mm height above the surrounding finished floor level.
MESH REINFORCEMENT IN MORTAR JOINTS To provide additional resistance to stresses, vibration and thermal movement, mesh reinforcement should be embedded in the mortar joints between courses of brickwork. The mesh reinforcement should be laid over the 1st or 2nd course and at every subsequent 4th course of brickwork. There should be minimum 150mm lapping where different sections of mesh reinforcement overlap.
