saying, “Hi, I’m Joanne, and you’re not going
to find someone like me anywhere. Because
I’m the only Korean, American-born, from
North Korean immigrants, vegan chef, food

Everybody has things that make them
unique, but there can be barriers to
speaking your mind freely, in this era of
online harassment. Some of the things
you’re talking about are real hot buttons,
like politics, racism, even veganism.
Yeah, for the first few years of being vegan,
it was difficult, especially being Korean,
because I felt people were like, “Oh, you’re
not actually Korean. You’re just white.”
And there was overt hostility to vegan-
ism popping up on my Facebook feed.
But I think there’s also definitely a prob-
lem with white veganism. So I felt I was
in the middle of that tension, and I had to
be very careful to explain white veganism

other cultures and the judgment of cul-

it’s time to create practices that will slow
down the rate at which you’re making

need to make them.

You can try creating a list of things you

that list. The trick is to avoid buying sale
items or services that aren’t on your list
just because there’s a discount — it's a trap
for many people, so remember that it's just

Then, ask yourself some questions before
you make a purchase. Why do I need this

locate? Do I have the money for this in my
bank account? And will using that money

Thankfully, Parker thrived with the extra

included organizing and attending doc-

COVID-19 has removed any independence
her father once had. “Things he used to do
by himself, like go to the grocery store or
the bank, he shouldn’t right now,” Innes
says. “You just don’t want him out having
that kind of exposure.” She also makes
sure to talk to him every day. “Loneliness
is an issue as well.”

Innes and the Metzes are among the one-
quarter of Canadians over the age of 15 who,
according to Statistic Canada’s 2018 Gen-

Receiving, identify as caregivers. Approxi-
mately 7.8 million people said they “helped
a family member or friend who had a long-
term health condition, or a physical or men-
tal disability, or problems related to aging.”
And that number is based on those who see
what they do as caregiving; some people
view caregiving tasks as familial duties sim-
ply helping out.

“Caregiving looks different, depend-
ing on so many things,” says Dr. Adriana
Shnall, program director at Baycrest@
Home, Clinical Programs & Innovations
in Family Caregiving at Baycrest Health
Sciences in Toronto. “It’s a multi-faceted
experience for people. It depends on what
stage of life you’re in, on what stage of life
the person you’re caring for is in, on your
financial situation, on intersectionalities; it
depends on what type of illness. It’s hard
to speak about caregiving in generalities.”
