Speech Day

The annual Speech Day 2016 was held during the after-
noon of 27th May 2016 at Rev. Bro. Paul Sun Memorial
Hall. The Guest of Honour, Dr. Leung Lim Kin, Simon,
School Managers, Supervisor, Mr. Koo Yee Yin, Irving,
SBS, JP, Principal, Mr. Poon Wing Keung, teachers,
parents and students were present.
The proceedings were begun with religious rites led by
Rev. Fr. Dino Doimo, School Manager. A welcoming
speech and school report were then given by the School
Supervisor, Mr. Koo, and Principal, Mr. Poon, respectively.

064

The keynote speech of the afternoon was delivered by a distinguished
alumnus of St. Joseph’s, Dr. Leung Lim Kin, Simon, Vice Chairman of
NetDragon Websoft Inc., Chief Executive Officer of Huaya Education
Technology, and Chairman of the Board, Promethean World Limited.
Dr. Leung encouraged graduates to have the courage to take risks and seize
each opportunity in their future endeavours. He also stressed the importance
of embracing lifelong learning in order to get prepared for the opportunities.

The speeches were followed by the distribution of the graduation certificates
and academic awards to the graduates. After the formal component of the
proceedings, the audience was pleased to be entertained by enthralling
performances of students from the secondary and primary sections. A rousing
rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, which reminded our graduates of all their happy
days in St. Joseph’s, brought the ceremony to a blissful end.

Student Association
Election

The election for the 25th Student Association was successfully held on
23rd September.

This year, there were two proposed cabinets; Brotherhood and
Praxis. Both teams fought hard and listened to advice in a series of
promotional activities and Q & A sessions before Election Day.

Students cast their votes throughout the day on Election Day and
the votes were counted after school. Praxis won the trust of our
students with 375 votes and became the 25th Student Association. It
is believed that Chairman Chan Ho Lun and his cabinet have students
best interests at heart!

24th January at Wan Chai Sports Ground.
Students participated in a variety of track and field events and this year, two records were
broken. Tse Yee Hin from 5B broke the 100m school record and Woo Shing Lok from
3A broke the 800m record set in 1975, 42 years ago!

Christmas Celebr ation

Christmas is one of the most important rites in the Catholic
Liturgical Calendar. As a Catholic School we treat the Christmas
Celebration as one of the highlights of the school year. This joyful
event was held on Wednesday 16th December 2016.
Proceedings began with a celebration, led by Deacon Lam, of
Catholic Rites in the school hall. All present participated reverently
in the ceremony and a feeling of goodwill befitting the Christmas
Season was felt by everyone in attendance.

072

Following the solemn ritual a more lighthearted mood
enveloped the proceedings. A long list of recipients were
presented with prizes for outstanding achievements in
the school year to date. The audience was mesmerized
by the talent in the Solo Singing Contest. It was great to
see the contestants enjoy themselves as they showcased
their talents. A definite highlight was the superbly
choreographed dance routine performed by Form 6
students.

At the conclusion of activities in the hall classes returned
to homerooms for class parties. A Christmas feast was
enjoyed by students and teachers and was followed by
games, activities and gift exchange.

The Christmas Celebration was a truly joyful event and a
fitting way to begin the joyous season of Christmas.

59th School
Anniversary
Celebr ation

The celebration of the 59th Anniversary of SJACS was
held on the morning of Friday 17th March. A well planned
series of ceremonies, events and activities ensured an
enjoyable experience for special guests, staff and students.
Proceedings began respectfully with Mass celebrated by
Father Joseph Chan. All in attendance were inspired by
Father Chan’s wise words.
Following Mass a visual representation of our Five Core
Values “LOVE, LIFE, FAMILY, TRUTH, JUSTICE”
was set in motion. It took the form of five interconnected
cogs with each cog driving the next. It was a truly
ingenious way of visually displaying how each of the Five
Core Values works independently and in unison.

074

With preparation for next year’s Diamond Anniversary
well underway, a countdown clock to the anniversary was
set in motion. Each day we will all be able to observe the
clock and keep in mind this great milestone is quickly
approaching.
Activities continued with a prize giving ceremony and
gifts being distributed in the form of cakes, vouchers for
ice-cream and a Diamond Anniversary badge.
With the formal part of the morning concluded students
moved to the playground for various activities including
the staff football match, music by a brass ensemble, Red
Cross Booth, photo-taking and an ice cream vendor.
The 59th Anniversary was a very enjoyable celebration
and we all now look forward to the Diamond Anniversary
in 2018.

075

F.1 Bridging Course

It was another successful year for the Form One Bridging Course and again, Form One students were
well-prepared to make a smooth transition from primary to secondary school life. In the mornings,
students attended English, Chinese and Maths lessons. In the afternoons, students were taught study
skills to help provide them with vital self-management skills. Students also enjoyed two days of adventure-
based training where they considered how to face difficulties in life with positivity and learnt to fully
appreciate team spirit. Much was gained by all involved.
Students participation and enthusiasm was celebrated at the graduation ceremony.

077

080

Clubs

081

Adventure Tr aining Club

The Adventure Training Club provides students with unique
challenges and situations through games and activities. The students
need to complete their tasks by solving the problems by themselves.
Students gain experience by participating in the activities, and this
experience turns into useful knowledge and skills which can be
applied in real-life situations. The Adventure Training Club aims at
boosting students’ self-confidence and team spirit, as well as training
their logical thinking and leadership skills. It is hoped that students
also learn the skills of leading adventure-based activities.

080

Balloon
Twisting Club

The goal of this club is to enable a total
beginner to engage in this fun activity and
to help him to progress rapidly leading to
technical and artistic mastery. Students learn
how to create a variety of balloon sculptures.

081

Choir

St. Joseph’s Anglo-Chinese School Choir provides training in choral vocal
technique. During this year, we practiced singing different kinds of songs,
such as “Panis Angelicus”, “As I Hear a Sweet Lark Sing”, Christmas songs,
Church music and some famous works. Some works were in Latin, Italian
and English. We joined the 30th Kwun Tong Joint School Music Show and
69th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Boys Choir Competition, attaining
Proficiency level.
We had choral training together with elders, in cooperation with the Elder
Academy, with the aim to promote harmony between the elderly and the
young.

082

Cookery Club

This is the second year of St. Joseph’s Cookery Club. There are 12 members,
including both junior and senior formers, in our club. As our activities take
place at teatime (2:40 pm to 4 pm), we mainly share our experience in cooking
simple and delicious desserts such as egg tarts, glutinous rice dumplings, lemon
cakes and palmiers.
The objective of the Cookery Club is to offer chances for students who have
little cooking experience to participate and develop their interest in cooking.
We would also like our members to learn more about healthy eating, as well as
hygienic and safe cooking.

083

Elder Academy

We encourage young students to participate in voluntary work for the
Elder Academy, such as assisting in the operation of the Elder Academy
or acting as young teachers. Through participating in our activities, elders
can learn about new technology to keep pace with the times, while young
students can get to know more about the elderly and learn from their
valuable life experiences. This will not only expand the social network
of the elders and young students, but also promote intergenerational
harmony and rapport.

084

Eyes to the World

John F. Kennedy once said, “The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by
skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who
can dream of things that never were.” That is why we are humbled by knowledge as the
greater our knowledge increases the more our ignorance unfolds.
While knowledge learnt in LS class expands horizons by exposing our students to worlds
outside their own, they also need to see themselves, their experiences and their cultures
reflected in class.
We are dedicated to enlivening the knowledge learnt in LS class, helping students to
develop a clear and independent thought that enables them to form their own opinions
and to make their own judgements, resisting prejudice and acquiring objectivity, in the
hope of enabling them to resist the pressure in society tending to narrow-mindedness,
conformity and apathy.

085

Fishing Club

The Fishing Club was established in 2015. Students can
get new experience of fishing through our club activities.
During the course, students learn fishing safety rules.
They also learn how to fish with a rod as well as a single
line with a hook.
One of the activities was held in a fishing farm where
students caught Pompano. It was a really exciting
experience as Pompano would try to escape at all cost.
It is not uncommon that the fishing line will break and
you will lose the fish if you do not know how to catch it
tactically. Students gained experience of catching fish in
the sea by taking a boat trip in Sai Kung. During the boat
trip, students caught different kinds of fish and some of
the species may not be seen in fish markets.

086

Gateball Club

The Gateball Club was established in 2014. We have been playing
the game in the Ping Shek playground near our campus. Gateball is
played on a rectangular court 20 meters long and 15 meters wide.
Each court has three gates and a goal pole. The game is played by two
teams (red and white) of up to five players. Each player has a numbered
ball corresponding to their playing order. The odd-numbered balls are
red and the even-numbered balls are white. Teams score one point for
each ball hit through a gate and two points for hitting the goal pole, in
accordance with the rules. A game of gateball lasts for thirty minutes
and the winner is the team with the most points at the end of the
game. Through the competition, students can learn how to cooperate
with their team members.

087

Gym Club

The Gym Club aims to cultivate students’ interest in
improving their physical health whilst, at the same time,
encouraging them to enjoy the benefits that exercise can
bring to mental health.
Students learn the correct and safe way to use fitness
equipment and, of equal importance, how to support and
encourage others.

088

Handicr aft Club

The mission of the Handicraft Club is to promote interest
in all kinds of handicrafts and to provide a place where
such work could be done at school. The Handicraft Club
offers its members a wide variety of handicraft and fine
art classes and workshops. Recent handicraft classes have
included decorative painting, paper cutting and pattern
design. Fine art classes include watercolor, oil, acrylic
painting and Zentangle art (禪繞藝術).
The Handicraft Club was set up to provide our students
with a platform to preserve as well as share the joy of
handicrafts and arts.

089

Italian Culture Club

The Italian Culture Club offers a variety of activities for
students to feel the amicable personality of the Italians, to
learn the classic Italian language and to taste the famous

As most of our members are beginners, the tutors teach them proper skills on how to use a variety of tools, such as
