A personal Letter about clubs and facilities at your dream school

22nd September 2016
Hi Cindy,
How are you doing? Thanks for your letter it sounds like you are really enjoying your new school. I want to
tell you about my school. It’s called Isfand’s International School.
There are 20 students in my class. We all have an ipad pro. There’s a gymnasium, a swimming pool,
2 basketball courts, a canteen, a playground and a football pitch. The basketball court is my favourite place.
It’s next to the swimming pool. There are 60 classrooms. I am studying in form 1. We have Sports Day,
football matches, singing concerts and picnics.
There are a lot of clubs and extra-curricular activities at my school. We have Basketball Club, Volleyball Club,
Choir, Orchestra and Drama Club plus many more. I am in the Volleyball Club. I don’t like that club. I am
thinking of joining the Basketball Club. I can’t wait to learn how to play basketball.
The choir practices in the music room, the orchestra practices in the school hall, the drama club practices in
the gymnasium while the basketball and volleyball clubs practice at outside venues.
I think my school is big and modern. It’s a good place to study. I like my school because it has many activities
and different types of clubs.
It was great to hear from you and enjoy the rest of the term.
Cheers,
Isfand

An inspirational person

Have you heard of Desmond Doss? He was a US field medic during the Second World War.
The reason I admire him is because he didn’t carry a single weapon to protect himself on the hellish battlefield.
So, do you expect because of this he was killed in action? You’re wrong! In fact, he saved seventy-five people
during his service. Desmond’s bravery was recognized when he received the Purple Heart Medal and the
Medal of Honour, both of which are the highest achievements awarded by the US military.
Desmond Doss is inspirational to me because he had a daring heart to save his comrades without being afraid
of getting shot or killed. What is also amazing is that he didn’t kill a single person during World War Two,
even though it has the highest number of casualties recorded in the history of armed conflicts. His brave and
fearless dignity made him famous and inspirational to a lot of people, including me.
The movie ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ is about the heroic life of Desmond Doss. Watching this movie inspired me to
contribute more to valuing, and maybe one day even saving, others’ lives.

A letter to the editor – Waste problem in Hong Kong

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about a serious waste problem in Hong Kong. I believe it is important to
educate the public about solid waste and how to reduce it.
One major environmental problem in Hong Kong is too much waste. In 2007, people dumped more than
9,000 tonnes of domestic, commercial and industrial waste every day. That means each person threw away
1.36 kg of rubbish a day. Littering is also common; it spreads germs and attracts many cockroaches.
Another problem is most rubbish goes to the three landfills in Hong Kong. They are filling up quickly and
will be full by 2018. Soon, we will have no space left for our rubbish.
To deal with the above environmental problems, I would like to propose a territory-wide ‘Super-Clean-
up’ campaign. We should always take our shopping bag when we go shopping. Try to choose goods with
less packaging. Give old clothes, computers and toys to charity. Use rechargeable batteries. Also, put old
newspapers, scrap paper, plastic bottles and soft drink cans in recycling bins to reduce waste.
Once we reduce waste, we can ease the burden on landfills. We could also take a video about doing the things
above and share it on the Campaign Day. It could be held at Sydney Beach, as we want to tell citizens in
Hong Kong to be green. Some judges will judge which video is the best and the best video will get some prizes
for encouraging people to be green.
To create a clean and healthy city, we need the support of everyone in society. If we educate ourselves and do
what we can to reduce waste, we can make Hong Kong a truly green city.
Yours faithfully,
Andrew Soh

A speech

Good morning everyone, I am the CEO of the company called ‘P Product’. Thank you for attending our
seminar.
Today, I’m going to speak to you about a new product called ‘7 Phone’. This product is the seventh version
of ‘P Product’ invention. It is different from other phones. I promise it can change the whole world.
Do you have a phone? Do you know what a smart phone is? Although ‘7 Phone’ is the most expensive
phone, believe it or not, you should buy this phone for your future. Now, let me introduce it. This smart
phone is called ‘7 Phone’ and it looks like a Lego block. There are many colours for you to choose, such as
orange, green and black. Its size is just about 2cm by 2cm square. It is only 2 grams and it is made of metal.
When you use it, you can press the home button on the Lego block and it will change to a smart phone like
a transformer. You can play games and receive a call. It can work as a clock, a notebook, a camera and more.
There are more than one million apps, like books, movies, music and games apps.
Besides, there are many benefits of the product. First, its size is very small, so we can carry it easily. The most
important function is it can detect the users’ eyes and noses, so your phone will never be turned on by others.
This product is the best choice because it has over two thousand functions with very little radiation.
At last, I must talk about the price. It costs seven thousand dollars. But when you buy two ‘7 Phones’, you
will have a 30% discount. Also, you will get a $200 voucher and smart headphones when you buy the
‘7 Phone’.
There is animportant piece of information about this product. You need to charge the phone before you use
it each time but you only need to charge it for two hours to make the battery life longer. Thank you all for
listening to my speech. What are you waiting for? Go to our store to buy this immediately.

A travel blog – A memorable trip in Hong Kong

10th December, 2016
My friends and I had a great day touring around Hong Kong. In the morning, we visited Wong Tai Sin
Temple. Wow! There was a sea of people even in December. We kept our fingers crossed and closed our eyes.
We thought that those spirits might make our wish come true. People burnt incense and visited fortune
tellers for divination. We realized that Hongkongers are superstitious. We were also very impressed by the
Grand Temple. My friends told me that there was never a place like this in America. What a splendid place!
After having breakfast, we went to MongKok in the afternoon. MongKok is one of the local and popular
places in Hong Kong. We bought lots of clothes and souvenirs in Tung Choi Street (Ladies’ Market). The
clothes were fabulous and eye-catching. The designers of the clothes did a great job! We also enjoyed local
street foods such as curried fish balls, fake shark’s fin soup, stinky tofu, etc. Those mouthwatering foods made
us pretty full. American food isn’t that special. My friends loved Hong Kong street foods so much.
Guess where else we visited in the evening? It was The Peak. We rode the tram which was the quickest and
most scenic way to arrive at The Peak.Once we reached there, we sighed. The stunning view blew us away!
We were able to see the whole of Hong Kong from the top of The Peak. We took thousands of photos there.
The scenery was memorable. After that, we had dinner in Lan Kwai Fong. There were more foreigners. We
had lots of fun chit-chatting.
After this one-day trip, the most impressive attraction for me was The Peak. It is my favorite place and I’m
fond of the breathtaking view! Hong Kong is known as the Pearl of the Orient. I think that’s the reason why.
I’m very proud of being a Hongkonger. If time allows, I must visit there again. I look forward to going there
soon. What about you? What is your favorite place in Hong Kong? Comment below.

Ways to stay away from the screen

Video games addiction is a growing issue in the world and teenagers spending endless hours in the virtual
world for days has become a norm in recent years. Hong Kong, which is one of the most developed cities in
the world, is of course no exception. To cope with this, it is time to look for solutions.

The most effective measure is for the addicts to reach out for helping hands. One common problem with
video game addicts is poor self-control. Therefore, they need help from people they trust, particularly their
family and friends, who should limit the amount of time the addicts spend online. It is good to set boundaries
and make it clear that there is no excuse for extended use. The addicts have to pull themselves away from the
screen once the set time is up. In situations when they are not willing to stop, their family members or friends
have to show up and persuade, or even force them to get away from the screen. If there is an agreement
between the addicts and their guardian, they may even share the gaming passwords, which could be changed
by the guardian to avoid prolonged playing time.

As well, guardians could modify the addicts’ daily itinerary to minimize the chance of them starting games.
In most cases, the victims of video game addiction start playing because they think there is nothing else to
do. If there were multiple tasks assigned to them, they would not start their journey in the parallel universe
once they had free time. Therefore, teenagers should be encouraged to schedule after-school activities such
as sports to fill the void. This way they are able to use the time and do something meaningful instead. It is
worth noting that it is much more difficult to get them off the screen than not allowing them to start the
games in the first place.

The last solution is to track the addicts’ recovery progress and constantly reward them if a certain target
is achieved. Video game addiction cannot be solved in a short period of time, so it is always useful for the
addicts to remind themselves how much good progress they are making by tracking the amount of time they
spend on games. For example, if they manage to cut down 10% of time spent on video games this week, it
is a small but undoubtedly a step closer to curing the addiction. They should be rewarded with treats such as
new clothes or delicious food. This can be done and encouraged by their guardians. Slowly but surely, they
will find the way out of the addiction.

At the end of the day, like other forms of addiction, video game addiction is something curable. However,
this issue is a headache for our society which needs immediate intervention. Unless we spend adequate time
and effort in helping youths to make good use of technology, they will be locked in the small world defined
by their screens.

How to resolve the problem of video game addiction

Video game addiction is a serious problem among teenagers in every part of the world, including Hong
Kong.It is causing teen addicts to losetrack of time as they spend most of their time on video games, which
not only affects their schoolwork, but also their relationships with families and friends. Fortunately, this
issue can be addressed in a number of ways.
One solution is for the video game addicts to set up a timetable for themselves. One main reason causing
the addiction is the lack of time management. Without a proper schedule, one may not have specific
goals to achieve every day and would just opt to spend time on meaningless games. In contrast, if one
had a timetable, one would spend time more carefully and prioritize obligations forthe day. According
to recent research, people with better time management skills are less likely to become addicted to
video games.
Another solution is to educate young adults about the various impacts of video game addiction. It is
common that teenagers consider video games as a form of harmless entertainment. However, hardly any
of them would reflect on how this entertainment could turn them into desperate addicts who cannot
control their own lives.Schools could invite professionals, social workers, or even ex-addicts to share
their experience with students. It would be a great opportunity for students to learn the causes and
impacts of video game addiction from real life stories.
Apart from preventive measures, it is also important to help those who are addicted to video games. It is
a sad fact that this group of people may not be able to control their addiction even if they acknowledge
the problem. Therefore, the key to helping them is to introduce them to counselling services. As in-
school counselling teams are available, teachers should identify students with video game addiction and
encourage them to seek help from the counselling team, who could provide them with professional
advice and practical tools to address the problem.
In conclusion, it is urgent that we address the growing problem of video game addiction.People craving
video games need to know they are not alone and there are many ways out. They could stay away
from their screens by setting their own daily schedule, understanding more about the impacts of video
game addiction and seeking counselling services. If this worked out just as planned, this life-destroying
epidemic could be stopped and teens could have a better future.

An informal email

Hi Sam,

How have you been? I’m spending this summer at this splendid camp in Macau. It’s a real shame you didn’t
join me.

This Actors’ Camp is just simply brilliant! The campsite is located at the coast, surrounded by the ocean, just
like Fuji. It consists of two Portuguese buildings, not very tall though, only three stories high. However, this
does give me that classy, vintage feeling; it’s like travelling back in time. The instructors even told us they were
left over by the missionaries. So historical!

The instructors are one of the features too! Each and every one of them is so special and vivid. Some of
them are friendly and some are cool, but they share one trait – they are all exotic. When they perform, they
don’t dramatise, and yet their emotions and movements are so natural. However, it is fun to listen to their
dialogues, as their accents are so amusing. Let me tell you something that’s going to make you regret not
joining me for the rest of your life. I met an instructor here who looks like Scarlet Johansson. She is the real
deal. She is attractive and elegant with her long, curly, blond hair. I couldn’t take my eyes off her feminine
body. Her smile is like a cherry while she dresses like a blossom. This goddess gas devoted herself to drama
and is planning to be an actress in the Broadway. I’ve asked her for her phone number and attached her photo
in this email for your pleasure.

The participants are not to be ignored (including me). They are all very experienced. For example, Roberto, a
lad whom I met here, is a veteran. He took part in some world tours. I think he’s going to be a star one day.
Throughout the one day I am spending with them, the interactions are plentiful and fruitful. It’s like I’m
currently practising with some professional artists. However, some of them try too hard and overdramatize,
which makes them look peculiar on the stage.

All in all, this camp is so unforgettable that it will leave its imprint on my heart. Please tell Miss Chan to ask
all club members to come next week, you too!

Lots of laughs,
Joe :)

Internet crimes on the rise

Nowadays, everyone can gain access to the Internet very easily as there are smartphones and tablets
which allow people to surf the Internet whenever they want. While all of us are enjoying our time on
the Internet, do you know how dangerous the Internet actually is? Internet crimes like identity theft
and phishing are becoming more and more common and the next victim could be anyone. In order
to prevent ourselves from becoming the next victim, students can do a lot to protect themselves from
Internet crimes.
Browsing the Internet can be very dangerous as there are a lot of people out there committing Internet
crimes. There are a lot of different Internet crimes but identity theft and phishing are the most common
crimes that we may face while surfing the Internet. Identity theft means obtaining someone’s personal
information and using it to commit theft or fraud which is extremely terrifying as someone may pretend
to be you and commit a crime. Phishing refers to an attempt to trick someone into giving information
over the Internet or by email that would allow someone else to take money from them. Why is Internet
crime such a big problem? Are there not other crimes which are more intimidating? According to research
done by the UK’s Get Safe Online campaign, cybercrime is now the fastest growing sector of global
crime. Identity theft is increasing at a rate of 40% per year and phishing also increased 14% from 2007
to 2009, so we can see how this problem will affect us as time passes.
Students in our school can do a lot to ensure their safety on the Internet and to prevent themselves from
becoming a victim. They should be aware of what their online name or profile on the social media reveals
to strangers. They should also conduct Internet searches regularly to check if their personal data can be
accessed online. Moreover, meeting new friends on the Internet can be dangerous. Always stay alert and
do not share any personal information until you confirm that person is trustworthy. Last but not least,
everyone should increase their awareness of computer and cyber security as well as the risk associated
with social media through different routes like the media and from their parents, teachers or I.T. experts.
Remembering these simple reminders will ensure their safety on the Internet.
In short, the number of Internet crimes is continuously rising and anyone may be the next victim
anytime since most people use the Internet every day. Students should face and tackle this problem with
their own effort as no one can help them when they are browsing the Internet on their own. It isessential
to take action now to deal with this problem before it affects anyone.

Valedictory Speech of Class 2017

Dear Honourable guests, parents, Mr.Chu, Mr.Poon, teachers and the prospective foundations of our society.
It’s our honour to have your presence here, today, and it is my pleasure to stand here delivering my very last
speech of my secondary school life to all of you.
Form Six, St.Joseph’s was where we met, where our bonds were formed, where our stories began. Remember
the best friend you happily cornered? Or the homework you copied? Throughout the last six years, we
chuckled, we shed tears, we hollered, together in this campus of ours. I will not go into vivid details to
describe what amazing seniors you have been. We all know that within the deepest parts of our hearts.
Here, at this moment, as we are about to leave, it’s time for us to say thanks. To give thanks to those who
accept our flaws generously. To appreciate those who toiled for us, those who lead us to a brighter future.
Thanks to them for scolding us to strengthen our hearts, taking us from boys to men. Thanks for always
staying here with us when we experienced ups and downs. Thanks for everything you did for us. Perhaps you
will no longer be beside us in the near future, but the lessons you taught us, the words you spoke to us will
forever stay deeply in our hearts. Let’s give a big hand to our teachers and staff!
Maybe it’s hard for us to believe that in a few months, we are going to face the brutal reality of life all
by ourselves. But I hold the strong faith that we are going to make it through based on just one vital
fact, which is that the Josephian spirit is embedded within us. Students, look back now into the past.
Recall how our football team got into Division 1, recall how our basketball team nearly crushed DBS,
recall how we hollered when our track and field team leap frogged other prestigious schools in the Inter-
school Athletic Competition. Look how St.Joe’s has shone brighter in these few years. These are our
achievements. We have made a better, stronger St. Joe’s. We all may be different, but we share the same
proud title as a Josephian. I believe the spirit of St.Joe’s will benefit us for the rest of our lives.

120

Finally, it’s time for us to say goodbye. Time flies and these past six years have passed in the blink of an
eye. Almost like spilling a glass of water accidentally and not seeing it’s coming, until realising the floor
is wet. Nevertheless, our future is waiting to be unleashed.Whatever you do in the future, do live by our
school motto, “AD ASTRA”. Strive for excellence, never give up and reach the stars.
Allow me to end this speech with a poem:
Class came.
Class went.
It’s worth a lot, the time you spent.
Congratulations are now due.
To the graduates. Special you!
Thank you!

比賽讓我認識了允行,讓我知道人無完美,人更不可以貌相。有人貌若天仙,但心腸卻毒如蛇蠍;
