1973 glom_resized

In what seemed like an instant replay, Newton did it again.

Spontaneous celebration began with
1:34 left in the game and carried through
another Langner interception, ending the
last Barna offensive threat. As the final
seconds faded away, fans from Tusca-
loosa slipped out of the stadium quietly
and the Tiger fans began a Toomer's
Corner pep rally all across the-state. No
one from Auburn was worried as they
left Legion Field.

Gator

Bowl

Auburn added a final chapter to an incredible story, but
who would have guessed it would end any other way? Au-
burn, the 11-point underdog, 24; Colorado 3. The last chap-
ter was added Saturday, December 30, 1972, in Jackson-
ville's Gator Bowl. There were no miracles this time. No
strange quirks of fate. Auburn's defense intimidated a super
Colorado offense, and the Auburn superstar offense pre-
formed as they had all year. The statistics do not tell the
story at all as Colorado had a 14-13 edge in first downs, 267-
233 in total yardage and 20 of 33 completed passes to Au-
burn's five of eight. It was Auburn's 10th victory in 11 games
in a season which was supposed to be a rebuilding year for
the War Eagles, but which culminated in a totally unbeliev-
able number 5 national ranking and the win in the 28th Ga-
tor Bowl.

Coach 'Swede' Umbach

Coach Umbach brought wrestling to Auburn in 1946.
Since then, Auburn has lost o~ly one dual wrestling match
to a Southeastern Conference School. Umbach, who has
dominated the sport in the South, has been widely ac-
claimed nationally for his knowledge of rules and coaching
techniques. He is a past president (1955) of the American
Wrestling Coaches and currently serves on the Inter-
collegiate Wrestling Rules Committee. Umbach has
coached 27 teams to the SEC Championship, three wrestlers
to win NCAA individual titles, and many more to place in
the NCAA top four. His 1972 team won the SEIWA
invitational.

107

Mike Roberts, captain of the team for the past two years,
is an SEC Champion. He has won matches in three national
tournaments, being one of Auburn's most consistent pla-
cers. Roberts was a 1972 SEIWA Champion in the 167
pound competition.

Another SEC Champion, George Calloway, has been one
of the strongest assets to the team. He has placed in every
competition. Calloway has been an SEC Champion for the
past two years.

ments and entered the NCAA meet.
