Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 4 The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society In 2003, the Government of Canada declared that the historic Sheringham Point Lighthouse was no longer needed to ensure maritime safety in the Juan de Fuca Strait. Advances in technology meant that the Lighthouse could now be discarded — torn down, sold off for other uses or, simply, left to rot and eventually to fall apart. In response, a small group of neighbours gathered to form the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. They were determined that the Lighthouse, which had stood for almost 100 years as a symbol of their community, would not be lost. For the next twelve years, the Society’s volunteers worked extremely hard to fight for the Lighthouse’s protection, doing everything they could to raise awareness about the threat to their community heritage. They rallied their community, local businesses and other groups, lobbied and strategized with all levels of government, raised funds and, eventually, put forward a plan to take on the responsibility to care for and conserve the Lighthouse themselves. In 2015, the Society’s efforts were successful. The government agreed to transfer the property to the Society and also, at the same time, they officially designated Sheringham Point Lighthouse a “Canadian Heritage Lighthouse”. As the new owners and stewards, the Society worked for the next seven years to restore the Lighthouse to its former glory, and to make sure it will always be accessible for the public to enjoy and appreciate. The Lighthouse is now protected and is open to the public as a community heritage park.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 5 Children today have a greater range of opportunities open to them than at any time in recent history, and greater freedoms than ever before. Thriving in this chaotic environment requires an ability for all children to be able to find a strong foundation from which they can build their lives, achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. For most of us, that foundation starts with the family, and extends outward into the community. Just as a tree needs deep roots to grow tall and strong, so does a child draw nourishment and vitality from his or her own roots, from the comfort of belonging, from having a place to call home. Understanding and, in particular, experiencing their own connections to the people and places around them is invaluable for children in so many ways. Learning about their own and their community’s history provides a base from which they can explore their world and help them answer that most fundamental of questions: “How did this come to be?” Our history is not just an academic pursuit to be left to historians. It’s not just about dates and far-off locations, nor is it just about great battles, world-shaking events, the comings and goings of kings and queens and presidents. It’s also about the lives of the people who lived here before, their struggles and triumphs, their thoughts and ideas that nurtured their families, built their communities and shaped their world. It’s about the stories our grandfathers told us, and those from our neighbours. We all have stories in our lives and they are, in their way, as full of drama and intrigue as any of the great sagas of our history classes. It is our stories that shape us, that make us who we are. Our history – our heritage – is best lived and experienced, understood through the things we can see and touch and feel, and passed on in a way that warms our hearts and feeds our imaginations. It’s why we need to work hard to conserve, appreciate and celebrate our heritage — not just the castles and stately mansions, but the cottages and the old lighthouses as well. Those remnants of our past have stories to tell. “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” ~ Albert Einstein Exploring the Lighthouse École Poirier Division 2

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 6 ...The Program To help children in the local area strengthen their connections to their own community, we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to visit Sheringham Point Lighthouse, to learn about its history and operations, to appreciate its significance and understand why it is being conserved. It was also our hope to inspire them – and, through them, their families and friends – to take a personal interest in further exploring their community and helping to protect and celebrate their heritage and the future of the Lighthouse. We developed this short program, called “Exploring the Lighthouse”. This program has several parts: 1. History and Operations – we provide a short presentation outlining the history of the Lighthouse, and also talk about how lighthouses work and their role in maritime safety and community development. 2. Visit to the Lighthouse – the students visit the Lighthouse to see firsthand what it’s all about, and to experience its remarkable character and ambience. 3. Reflections – we ask the students to creatively express their impressions of the Lighthouse site by: • Taking photographs while they are at the site, focusing on the features that capture their attention/imagination. • Writing a story (either fictional or non-fiction) about a Lighthouse. 4. Commemorative Book - we compile the students’ photographs and stories into this commemorative book, which is being provided online to all the children, their families and the whole community. Exploring the Lighthouse It is the Society’s hope that we will be able to find the ongoing resources to make this project an annual event, and to make it available to all the elementary schools in the local area, with the result being that all children growing up in this part of the world will have the opportunity – through their visit to the lighthouse – to better understand and appreciate the community they call home. Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 7 A Brief History of the Lighthouse... Sheringham Point Lighthouse was built in 1912, and illuminated for the first time on September 30 of that year. The Lighthouse was built in response to the tragic wreck of the steamship SS Valencia, on January 22, 1906. En route from San Francisco to Victoria and Seattle, late at night and in rough weather, the Valencia missed the turn into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and steamed directly on to the rocks near Pachena Point. Of the 173 people aboard, 136 were lost. Creation of the Lighthouse began in 1911, with the purchase of 4 acres of land from Shirley resident Edwin Clark. The following year, the lighthouse tower was built, along with a small boathouse and a house for the lighkeeper and his family. The first lightkeeper, Eustace Arden, arrived in September 1912, and continued at the site until 1946. The light itself was a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens. Originally lit by oil lamps (and later by electric lamps), it was made up of many prisms which focused the light into a powerful beam that could be seen up to 25 km away. The lens Exploring the Lighthouse Under construction - 1912 Newly completed - ca 1912

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 8 rotated through a clockwork mechanism of pulleys and weights – each about180 kg – that had to be re-wound every three hours. Because of the size and weight of the lens, it was seated in a bed of liquid mercury, to allow it to turn without much friction. In 1925, a fog-alarm building was added to the site, and a new “diaphone” (two-tone) fog-horn was installed. Originally a wooden, peaked-roof building, constructed in front of the tower, this building was replaced in 1976 with the concrete block building that is still on site. The diesel engines that provided power for the site were also located in this building. A number of other structures were added to the site over the years, including radio towers and sheds, a fallout shelter (that was actually never used as such, but came to be used to grow mushrooms instead), other utility buildings and, in 1964, a new, more modern house for the Lightkeeper. During the 1980s, the Lighthouse was automated and it was finally destaffed in 1989 when the last lightkeeper left. Except for the tower and the engine room (fog-alarm building), all the other structures on site were taken down, or deliberately burned, to avoid vandalism. Left largely unattended for the next thirty years, the Lighthouse began to deteriorate and was in danger of being lost forever. Then, after many years of lobbying by the local community, in 2015, it was transferred to the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. It has now been restored to its former glory, and is open to the public as a community heritage park. ...A Brief History of the Lighthouse Exploring the Lighthouse Following construction of the fog alarm building - ca 1926 Following construction of the boat house - 1912

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 9 Exploring the Lighthouse “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” ~ Dorothea Lange, Photographer Reflecting what you see... Photography is a powerful tool for exploring the world around us. It causes us to focus more intently on what we are looking at, to look more closely, pay attention to the details, and take nothing for granted. It creates an intimate connection with the subject and with the environment that surrounds it. While it’s a very personal process, the end result is universal. To appreciate a photograph requires no ability to read, no language in common, no prerequisite level of education or life experience. Just an ability to see and to feel, and a willingness to participate. For this part of the program, we provided each student with a cell phone camera and some basic instruction in its use, as well as a brief overview of the art of photography. Then we asked them to take photographs while they were at the lighthouse, focusing on the things that caught their attention and/or their imagination. When we returned to the school later, each student chose his or her favourite photo, and explained why they chose it. There were lots of amazing photographs – creative and insightful! The following pages showcase their chosen photographs. Enjoy! “Photography represents the world we know, and suggests a world beyond what we can see. Creativity is the gap between perception and knowledge.” ~ Emmet Gowin, Photographer

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 10 Exploring the Lighthouse “Tell me the facts and I’ll learn. Tell me the truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” ~ An old First Nations proverb “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” ~ Rudyard Kipling, Author Telling your stories... Story-telling has always formed the underlying basis of human communication. Our stories are the ways that we connect ourselves to one another and to our communities. They help define who we are and where come from. Children naturally understand the power of story-telling, and we wanted to provide them with tools and strategies to explore and expand their own story-telling abilities, to share their own stories and to learn from others. Author Kathleen Arnason spoke to the students about the basic elements of creative writing, focusing on getting the children to explore their own feelings and values and to think about what is important and has meaning for them. Each student was asked to write a story (factual or fictional) about a lighthouse, incorporating what they had learned and what they had seen throughout the day. The following pages contain the results of that work, and they speak for themselves. Kathleen talks about the importance of storytelling and creativity. Ian tells the story about how the Lighthouse was built.

So Izzie and Lexi came over. The next day, Natalie, Izzie and I went to school. We had a lot of fun. That day I walked home from school and I saw Izzie. Izzie looked scared. Lexi said “Are you ok?” Izzie looked like she saw a ghost. The night that I regret most in my life was Feb 10 2014. It was 10:30pm, I was in my bed, and there was something out my window. So I just ignored it. The next day, my mom woke me up for school. I met Natalie at school. There was a field-trip that day, and we went to the lighthouse. It was known as the haunted lighthouse. Natalie and I did not want to go, but we had to go. When Natalie and I got back to school, we saw Izzie, so I and Natalie ran to see Izzie. Natalie said “Hi Izzie.” Izzie said “Hi” back. Later that night, Natalie, Izzie and I had a sleepover. Natalie, Izzie and I went to my house. Izzie left, but then she came back to my house. I got in my bed and I saw the man out my window from the lighthouse. I went to bed and the next morning I got up at 6am. I had a shower, and when I got out, Izzie and Natalie were murdered. The creepy man was standing over Natalie and Izzie. He had a knife. He ran at me and he stabbed me, and blood leaked out of me. The end.

Sounds of the water crashing upon the shore really made me feel nice and warm inside even though it was cold outside.

She was sitting in the middle of the class and the other kids were with their friends. The girl’s name was Ruby, and she was extremely shy. It was almost time to go home. “DINGGGGGG,” there want the bell. Ruby got up and ran home. It was summer. When she got home, she put her stuff down, and ran past her mom and dad to her horse RIco. He’s the only friend Ruby has. Her mom and dad came outside to see Ruby. “Ruby, Rico already had a walk today,” said her mom. “Great. More time for me to read,” said Ruby. “After dinner, ok?” “Fine.” “We’re going to your favorite dinner place,” said her dad. Ruby’s favorite dinner place was a sushi place. “YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” When they got to the sushi place, Ruby got the same thing she always gets. Then when they went home, and they went to bed. The next day they went to see Rico and he wasn’t there! “RICO!” screamed Ruby and then she started crying. Then they saw a post, and called the number…. it was a post and Rico was on it. Ruby’s mom called her. “Ruby there’s a post that a horse is on the loose.” Then they went to get him. They all went in a car, then Ruby rode him home. When mom and dad got home, they tried to see how Rico got out. While Ruby was riding Rico home, she knows a route to take. When she took that route, she saw a lighthouse. She knew that she couldn’t go down there with Rico, so she decided to go back without Rico. It was about a 10 to 15 minute walk. Rico fell, and made Ruby laugh a lot. “Hahaha.” Rico let out a big sigh. “Look Rico we’re home”. He sped up a little. ”Ok, let’s go.” When they got home, Ruby’s mom was cooking and her dad was at the store. Ruby put Rico back in his stall and went inside. “Hey sweety,” said her mom. “Where’s Dad?” “At the store,” said her mom. “OK, I’m gonna go read,” said Ruby. “Love you.” “Love you too.” When her dad got home they all had dinner, then went to bed. The next day Ruby went to the lighthouse and saw a girl. She was sitting at the lighthouse. Ruby went to the girl. “What’s your name?” said Ruby. “Bella. What’s yours?” “Ruby. UMM…..do you want to be…” “YES! Sorry I….I don’t have many friends. Actually I don’t have any friends,” said Bella. “I don’t either,” Ruby said. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER: “Bye Mom, I’m going to Bella’s,” said Ruby. “Ok, have fun. Um, I thought you were going to the Lighthouse with all the other friends?” “I am. We’re gonna have a picnic. That’s where we met,” said Ruby. “That Lighthouse sure is a friendly one,” said her mom. The end.

He always found the dog. But one day, they were walking down and then the dog ran away. Bella said “Luna! Where are you!” They were looking everywhere, but they could not find her. They went to the lighthouse to look for her, but she was not there either, so they went to the town and put missing dog posters everywhere, and then went home. The next day, they got a call. Ring, ring! “Someone found Luna!” Dad said. They got in the car and were going to where she was. They stopped at a big dog shelter. “They have Luna,” Dad said. They rushed in the door and went to the front desk. There was a lady there, she had brown hair and red lipstick, and nice bleu glasses. And she had Luna “Is this your dog?” she said. “Yes,” Dad said. She gave Luna to them, and they went back home and took Luna inside. They sat on the couch. “Luna looks sad,” Dad said. Then they took Luna to the vet. She went to go get checked. The doctor came out and said to them “Luna needs to be put down.” Bella looked at her dad, and Dad said “OK.” They went into the room to say goodbye, and Bella gave Luna a hug and said “I’ll miss you.” Then Dad said to Bella “We have to go now.” “OK,” said Bella. They went home, and two weeks later, it was Bella’s birthday. Dad gave her a big present. Bella opened the gift and she saw it was a puppy! “A puppy! She set the picnic up and sat down and then a girl came up to her and Bella said “My name is Bella.” The girl’s name was Ruby and they became friends. The end.

You could not really see it, but it was there. A girl named Natalie was playing Bloxburg on her ipad. There was a storm outside, and a tornado. The siren went off, and Natalie did not know what to do! She was super scared, and then the tornado got closer and closer. She really had no idea what was going on, until “knock, knock, knock,” there was someone at the door. She quietly went down the stairs with her stuffy and opened the door. It was 2 girls her age standing there. Natalie was confused. She said, “Why are you guys out here?” “Our parents are gone and we ran for our lives from the tornado.” “Ok, well get in here now,” Natalie said. “Ok,” said the two girls. Natalie gave them each a blanket. They started talking and began to be good friends. “Where are your mom and dad?” said one of the girls. “They left to go to the grocery store, like 4 or 5 hours ago. I forgot to ask what you guys’ names are?” One of the girls said “I’m Linnaea,” and the other one said “I’m Lexi!” And they continued talking in the morning. “Ya, I don’t think your parents are coming back,” said one of the girls. “Ya, I don’t think so either. How about we go check out that little lighthouse?” “OK!” said Lexi and Linnaea. The next day, the 3 girls went out on a walk to the lighthouse. “Hey guys,” said Linnaea, “we should be sisters now.” “What do you mean?” said Natalie. “Oh, like we should be good, close friends, and then it will seem like we’re sisters!” “Oh I get it now. Ok, we are almost to the lighthouse guys!” “YAY!!!!!!” said Linnaea and Natalie. “Ok guys, we’re outside the door. There is a guy in here that never lets anyone in s,o we have to be sneaky. Shhhhhhhhh. I hear him snoring in his bed. Ok let’s go up the 20,000 steps.” “WHAT!” said Natalie. “SHHHHHHH,” said Lex, “you’re going to wake him up.” “Well it’s 20,000 steps, and my legs are not going to be working,” said Natalie. “Ya, me too,” said Linnaea. “Well, we have our whole life to do this, and on every 20 floors we can take a 1 hour cont...

The 3 girls went up 1,0000 steps. “Guys, we are literally 1,0000 steps away! We are almost there!!!!!!! HEY!!! Oh no, that’s the guy I was talking about,” said Natalie. “I’m coming for you, even though I’m on the 100 floor, I can get from the bottom to the top in only 10 minutes. But it’s probably only going to be 1 minute from the top, so I would run if I were you.” “Guys RUN!!!! Ok, that was weird, we’re already at the top. Ok, let’s find a hiding spot. Ok, he seems still kinda far away.” “Ya,” said Linnaea. “Ok let’s hide. I hear him. Ok I’ll hide here, and you’ll hide here, and you’ll hide here. Ok girls lets be quiet.” “Ok girls. Come out, come out wherever you are. Hmmmm, I think they went down stairs.” He walks down the stairs. “Ok, let’s get out of here,” said Natalie. “Ya, I agree.” “Ok he is going down stairs, so we can’t go down the stairs. But this lighthouse is special, and it has a slide.” “What! A slide?!” “Ya, it’s going to be so fun!” “Ok, what are we waiting for? Let’s go now!” She goes to the slide. “This looks fun and scary at the same time.” “Ya, it does. It is kinda scary but if you get used to it, it’s not bad,” said Lexi. “Ok, let’s do this!!!!” said Natalie. “Ok, 3,2,1, GOOO ooooo – this is so funnnnn!!!!!!!! Ok, we did it! Oh no, the guy is here. Guys RUN!!! Ok goooo!!” “Ok we made it back to my house, and we lost that weird guy that was chasing us half of the time,” said Natalie. “How about we end the day off with some Roblox!” said Natalie. “Ok,” said both of the girls. “Let’s play Bloxburg! It’s my favorite game on Roblox. But first, I have to spend 100 dollars on Robux.” “What you like robux?” “Ya,” said Natalie, “why?” “Oh I think it’s just babyish.” “Well that’s mean,” said Linnaea. “Ya, it was. Ok fine, I got a little jealous. I’m sorry,” said Lexi. “Ok, let’s all play now!” said Natalie. “And it’s ok Lexi – mean things always come out people’s mouths when they don’t want it to.” She does the roll play on Roblox all night. “Let’s go to bed in the morning,” said Llinnaea. “Good idea,” said Lexi and Natalie. “Cockadudledoo!” “Ok, that’s my neighbor’s rooster. We can go to sleep.” Lexi turned the lights off. “Good night girls!” said Natalie. “Good night!” said Lexi and Linnaea. THE END LIGHTHOUSE ADVENTURE...(cont.)

The sun was here, I’m happy to say, the sun is here for another day. I see the water, I feel the breeze, I hear the ocean and I touch the trees. I feel so happy, I am, to see the lighthouse once again. In the daylight, nice and high, I see the lighthouse as tall as the sky. Shades of red, shades of white, standing tall in the light. I see the water, I feel the breeze, I hear the ocean and I touch the trees. I heard about the history and it’s true, many things have happened to the lighthouse. I can’t believe what it’s been through. A few years later it was restored, and they’re helping it more and more. Now it’s safe, I’m happy to say, now it’s safe for many days. Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 31 Isaac’s Pages (continued) DEMON AT THE LIGHTHOUSE by Isaac 1 WHEN WE MEET The first time we met, we were on a bus for a field trip, to go to Sheringham Lighthouse. We sat across from each other on the bus. Both alone. No one to talk to. We turned and looked at each other. Then the bus stopped. When we got off the bus, the teachers told everyone to get a partner. We chose each other. When we went down the hill to get to the lighthouse. They said to get stuff from our bags, and set up our stuff. We set up beside each other to camp. We played around a bit, and then we had to go to bed. When we did, I had a nightmare and woke up. I looked in Aaron’s tent, and he wasn’t there. And I saw someone at the top of the lighthouse. And I ran up to the top. When I got there, I saw a black void. It looked like it was getting sucked into something or someone and it looked at me with glowing red eyes. I ran as fast as I could back down to my tent, hoping it wouldn’t follow me. 2 THE MURDERER The next day we were playing around taking photos, when I saw Aaron talking to himself. I went behind a bush so I could hear him say “What are you, why me?” He turned to me and saw me. “When did you get here?” he said. ”It doesn’t matter, who are you talking to?” I said. “No one, come on let’s go.” At night, Max was gone again, and I went back up to the top of the lighthouse. When I got there, he was there too, with Westan. He killed him with a knife that came out of nowhere and stabbed him with it. He fell to the ground in a pool of blood and turned back at me with his knife pointing down. 3. THE FIGHT He ran at me super fast. A second after, he was cont...

Everything was blurry and it was getting harder and harder to see clearly. Then everything went black. And I remembered my parents, my brother…my family. And that I made a promise to my brother that we would die together or never. “Let me tell you the truth… this form is not your friend.” he said. “Ya think I didn’t know that once you stabbed me?” I said, my voice cracking. “I’m a demon that possessed your friend. You saw it the first night. You ran. I had so little power, you could have killed me and stopped me, but you didn’t. You’re the reason he is possessed!” he said. “No you are.” I said. I pulled out the knife and tried to stab him. Instead, he flicked it back at me and I dodged it. “Breath, breath.” I whispered. “Get out of him,” I said quietly. “What?” the demon said. “GET OUT OF HIM!” I yelled, ”NOW!!!” I kicked him back and charged at him. “Die, DIE, DIEEE!!!” I slid under him and tripped him. He hit the ground, I was about to stomp on him and then he dodged it. The whole lighthouse had a crack in the floor and it came tumbling down. Everyone woke up and ran to the bus. It was just me and him. Just like at the start. (Flashback…Both alone. No-one to talk to… flashback over). Something inside me just…burst. I screamed and grew a lot stronger and more athletic. Flash on top of him and he tried to grab me and left his stomach open. I flashed back down and hit him in his gut. Knocking the demon out of his body, and because he’s a spirit, he can’t hit me because my body is physical and his is spiritual. 4. EPILOGUE The end to a traumatizing adventure. We had to leave due to destroying a landmark, ad we all went back to school. And we all called our parents to go home, except me. I carried Max to the hospital once we got back to school. And so, she went to the planet of Chookabooca. And she brought her friend Alexis, and they saw a Chookabooca. And they had no F00D, so they looked for some food. They eventually found food, but their food got stolen. So they had to ask a cookabooca. Choocabooka said “What do you want?” Izzie said “We just need a little bit of food.” Chookabooca said “Ugh, ok. Maybe you can get food.” But instead of food, they got poison. When they got the food, they ate it and they got really sick. But Alexis helped Izzie, and they got on the spaceship and flew back to Earth. And Izzie got better by just eating real food. THE END

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 37 Kota’s Pages (continued) THE SHERINGHAM LIGHTHOUSE by Kota Me, Pierce and Ethan were taking a hike in the woods, near the ocean. Then, all of a sudden, we heard an ENORMOUS sound coming from the ocean. When we checked, we saw a ship sinking! I’ve seen this ship before, it was called the S.S Valencia. It has seemed to have hit a large rock. We saw a LOT of crew and passengers heading for the emergency boats. There were a lot of emergency boats, but still too many people. The sinking of the S.S Valencia caused 137 people to die. After the sinking of the S.S Valencia, the government ordered that 12 more lighthouses be built in that area. The end

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 39 Linnaea’s Pages (continued) THE MANGO TREE by Linnaea One day, there was a rat named Eileigh, who loved mangoes. Everyone on the little island loved mangoes. Eileigh the rat had been trying to reach the tree since she was two years old. All of the animals on the little island were playing hide and seek on the grass near the cherry trees on the other side of the little island. Eileigh needed help. She went to the cherry trees and saw Rosie the pig, Emma the baby chicken and Spotty the leopard. It looked like Spotty was seeking. Rosie was hiding in a tree, and Emma was hiding under the slide. Eileigh ran under the slide. “Emma, do you want a mango?” Eileigh asked. Emma chirped and jumped up and down. “Yes!” Eileigh and Emma snuck out, over to the mango tree. Emma jumped up but she couldn’t reach the mangoes. Eileigh stood on top of Emma but couldn’t quite reach. Emma ran to the cherry trees. Rosie was still in the tree. Emma chirped “mango, mango” to Rosie. Rosie climbed down and ran over to the mango tree on her short piggy legs. “Mango!” Rosie squealed. Rosie jumped up and down, but she couldn’t reach. Eileigh stood on top of Emma and Rosie and could almost reach, but then she fell down on to the ground. Emma jumped off Rosie on to the ground too. Spotty was still looking for everyone, while they were trying to get the mangoes. Eileigh said “We should go get Spotty, she probably feels lonely.” So everybody went to get Spotty. “Hi guys, where were you?” Spotty said. The others said “Sorry Spotty, we were trying to get mangoes from the mango tree.” “I want to eat mangoes!” said Spotty. So they all ran over to the mango tree. Spotty tried to climb the tree, but she slipped. Spotty tried to climb again. This time one of the mangoes fell. “Yay!” Everyone shouted. Spotty made five other mangoes fall. Rosie put the mangoes in a pink basket and took them to the lighthouse. In the lighthouse they made the mangoes into a pie, a cake, tarts, donuts, salad, sandwiches, cookies, and they even put them on pizzas!. Everybody on the island shared the mango food. And they all lived happily ever after. The end.

When I was exploring I got to go inside the lighthouse and it was awesome. I explored the area some more, and I found some cool things like the old foghorn. And when I was looking around I found a garden snake and I took a photo of it. I was looking some more and I found a machine that had whale sounds on it. I had a great time. It was cool I got to learn so many things about the lighthouse. Everybody had a great time at Sheringham Lighthouse. We learned a lot at the lighthouse. It was cool to learn how the lighthouse worked and how it was built.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 45 Natalie’s Pages (continued) THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER’S SON by Natalie The waves were crashing against my knees as my dad called me in for dinner. I knew that tonight I would have a good sleep, because I love the cold, and every Tuesday night the cold bites your skin. It has a nice crisp feeling to it, and it comforts me bravely, though I was happy. I felt strange, like someone was watching me from afar, and it was not comforting. And now, I almost felt sick, so I ran back home. I’ve lived my whole life in a small barn by the mountains, rivers and oceans. It was never safe to go outside at night, so I always get called home around 5:30. The reason, you may ask?? My Dad never told me. But I like to pretend that a witch wants to kidnap me, and lock me up in a tower with fairies, but we all know that’s not gonna happen. GOOD NIGHT. <Morning roll> My dad is getting old, so I usually have to get up around 6:30 to start my farm chores. But today, I woke up to a knock on my window. It was the lighthouse keeper’s son. He had brought me a basket of warm cookies and milk. Me and him were friends, but it was kept a secret because mine and his dad, let’s just say, aren’t the best of friends. Anyways, I ate the cookies and he watched me. “What the heck! Why are you watching me?” “Oh, I’m sorry, I was just waiting.” “Waiting for what?” “You to be done. I have free time, so I’m going to help you with your chores!!!! Okay?” We got to work and I felt weird ...like I had felt last night. It was creepy. When we finished our chores, he just left without saying goodbye. He was probably in a rush, but when he was gone I felt that feeling again. It was weird. I turned around and… “Ahh!! The lighthouse keeper!” (aka Mr. Stone). “I know you hurt my son. Now you will pay the price!” “I don’t know what you mean. I didn’t touch him at all. He was just helping with my chores.” “It’s true, she didn’t hurt me,” said the lighthouse keeper’s son (aka Justin). Justin came running over, and as soon as he got here Mr. Stone grabbed cont...

APOLOGIZE RIGHT NOW TO ME AND MY FRIEND!” “I’m sorry love, I don’t know why I got so mad. Have a cookie.” I mean, I am hungry, so “Okay.” I ate it, but I felt tired, so I said “Thanks,” and ran off. But I wouldn’t dare tell my dad, he would freak. As soon as I got home, I leaped onto my bed and fell straight to sleep. But when I woke up, I looked up to see…an evil sorceress! She was holding two cages, with two fairies in them. As I tried to stand up, something pulled me back. It was chains, and I was stuck! “Hello, anyone home? Yoohoo?” “Huh? Where am I?” “Oh YAY, good morning sleepyhead. Would you like a cup of tea?” “Yes please…with a side dish of information.” “Oh of course. Come take a seat at the table.” My words were lost. We were in a castle, attached to the lighthouse, levitating 80 feet up! First of all, how did I not see this before? This is crazy! “Long story short, a witch captured some of us fairies a long time ago, and put a spell on this castle so only she and fairies could see it.” “I’m a fairy??!!” “Noooooooo, silly. You’re a fairy protector.” “A fairy whatawhata???” “Well you see, there are mean, insane people in this world, who try to steal us for our magic. And people like you – fairy protectors – make sure that does not happen. We rely on you to help keep this castle a safe place for all the fairies.” “You know a lot, huh?” “Yes, but mostly because I’m the princess. Hi, nice to meet you. My name is Princess Stacy.”:“And I am Prince Thomas…but everyone calls me TOMMY. I’m basically the superhero ;].” “Yeah right….!” “I didn’t catch that.” “What???” “I didn’t say anything.” “Pww hahahahahahahaha!” “So anyways…” “What do y’all do for fun!?” “Hang out with each other!!!!” “Isn’t that a bit boring?” “No silly, it’s awesome.” “You don’t have technology?” “Nope, but we have board games.” “Sure sounds fun, I guess.” I thought it might be a little boring, but I tried it and it was fun!. Guess what…there was a winner, and that winner was me!!!!! I had never played that game before and I won. I’m so happy with myself. Anyways, it became night and the person that kidnapped me was kind enough to, at least, give me some stuff to have…like a bag that contained: 1: toothbrush and bathroom supplies etc. 2: sleeping bag, blanket, pillow and a few stuffed aniTHE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER’S SON...(cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 47 Natalie’s Pages (continued) mals like a teddy bear, a hippopotamus and a giraffe. At least I had a room to stay in, and pretty much everything I needed, but this place was HUGE!!!! And I think I will love it here! I have to sleep on the floor until they get me a new bed, because one of the fairies (a kid) was running away from his mom an”d hid under the bed, and then his head banged the bed really hard and broke the bed. He was fine of course, and it’s not fair that it happened to me. What did I ever do? Exactly NOTHING!!!! The kid didn’t even say sorry, and it’s my birthday soon! I’m so upset. Anyways, I’m getting called for breakfast..later! We made pancakes with sprinkles inside. Oh yummy??) It is! “Aaahh! Intruder intruder!!!!!!!” “False alarm! False alarm! It’s just sunny!!” “Hi, I’m Sunny, the one who destroyed your bed. SURPRISE!” “YOU destroyed my bed!? You monster!” “Calm down….” I did end up calming down, but it’s my birthday now, and I just woke up. “Wake up, wake up, wake uppppppp…” “It’s morning already?” “Yes and I’m so excited to give you your presents!” You got me presents?” “Yeah of course I did. It’s a gift from all of us? Come on, you need to open it, nowwwwww.” *Opens gift.* “Wow, a new bed!!?? For me?!” “Do you like it? Let’s go set it up.” “I love it, let’s go set it up.” I had the best sleep that night, but something did not feel right. It was the air, there was no magic in it. Where are the fairies? I looked around and…where are they??!! “Hello little girl.” “Don’t call me little. I’m stronger than you think!” (I’m actually not). “Yeah totally!” “Don’t trust him. It’s me, the lighthouse keeper’s son. I am here to save you.” “Save her from what?” “From you, you monster!” “Me? Haha, do you see yourself ? Come with me little girl!” “No, leave me alone,” I said. *Transforms into witch.* “Come here!” “You, you monster, you stole my friends and kidnapped me to put me here. I hate you.” “Come on, let’s go!” “But first let’s do something with this monster!!” “No, I’m no witch. Noooo.” *Takes magic wand and turns witch into smaller size, and traps in a cup.* “Take that!!!!” “Let’s go find your friends.” The moral of the story is stick with the people you got!!!!! Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 49 A VOICE IN THE HEAD by Nathaniel Nathaniel’s Pages (continued) 1 WHEN WE MEET The first time we met, we were on a bus to go on a field trip to Sheringham Lighthouse. We sat across from each other on the bus. Both alone. No one to talk to. We turned and looked at each other. Then the bus stopped. When we got off the bus, the teachers told everyone to get a partner. We chose each other. Then we went down the hill to get to the lighthouse. They said to get stuff from our bags, and set up our stuff. We set up our stuff. We set up beside each other to camp. We played around a bit, and then had to go to bed. That night I heard a voice in my head that said “KILL THEM! KILL THEM ALL!“ When I woke up, I was at the top of the lighthouse. I didn’t know where I was. I was scared. When I looked down, I saw Fox coming up to me. I tried to hide but I couldn’t. I didn’t know if he knew it was me, or someone else. 2 THE MURDERER The next day, we were playing around taking photos. I went to hide, to talk to myself. I said “What are you? Why me?” The thing in my head said to me “I am no one, you created me.” I looked back, and I saw Isaac for a glimpse. I knew I had to kill him first. Orson came over and said “Hey, what are you doing?” I got confused and ran away. I didn’t know if he saw me or knew if he heard me. I stayed up there for the rest of the night. I heard the teachers and everybody was looking for me. When someone started coming up, it was Weston. I ran for the light and pointed it at the stairs. When he got up, I turned it on and he was blinded. He fell down over the cliff and died. Nobody knew where he was, and everybody started looking for him. I just hid for the rest of the day. cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 50 3 THE BODY The next morning, the police were called and they did a search. They found Weston’s body with no marks, meaning he fell off the cliff. They thought it was an accident. They still hadn’t found me, when I looked around. I didn’t see anyone. I waited till night time and I made it back down to my tent. I grabbed all my stuff and then I went back up to the top. Nobody heard me. I waited till morning again and they started another search. I was terrified. That night, I saw Titus around at the side of the cliff. I saw a weapon on the top. It was a knife. I grabbed it. I can jump that high. I feel like I can jump down and break his neck or stab him. I trust my gut. I jump, I land on him and I break his neck. And then, I throw him over the cliff. I ran back up to the top of the lighthouse and hid. The next morning they lost Titus. Everybody thought he was just murdered too, cuz Weston got murdered and he disappeared. Everybody got worried. Someone looked down at the water and saw Titus’s dead body, all bloody. This night, I saw Ethan crying in the corner. He was hiding. I thought I could end him. I snuck up behind him, put a rope around his neck and threw him down the lighthouse. I hung him. They woke up. I waited for everybody. I heard people scream. Everybody ran away, but Isaac stayed. He wanted to try to find me. We waited multiple days. He finally came up. I took my chance. I figured out I can make knives out of thin air. As he came up, I ran at him. I stabbed him. I threw him off the lighthouse. I did it. I finally did it. I was happy. I finally succeeded in my mission. But then, suddenly, I saw a dark essence coming out of my body. It flew off me. I was scared. Then it started turning around towards me. I started running. Then it hit me in the back. I fell off the lighthouse. I’m dead now, and I’m a ghost telling the story over and over.
