Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 53 Nyla’s Pages (continued) VAMPIRES AT THE LIGHTHOUSE by Nyla I went to a lighthouse one night and I saw Emma in the shadows. She looked back at me and she looked frightened because a vampire bat had just bit her and her eyes were turning red. I saw her behind the lighthouse. That’s when I grabbed my knife and I stabbed her, and she fell to the ground. Izzie saw Emma on the ground. Izzie looked at the knife and saw my initials on it. Izzie looked at me and said “How could you?” I told her a vampire bat had just bit Emma and she was going to kill all of us. Emma’s blood leaked on to Izzie and it started burning her skin and turning it gray. I yelled “Izzie!” and then I stabbed her. Lexi was the last one. I told Lexi not to go near Emma or Izzie. Izzie turned into a vampire from Emma’s blood getting on to her, and I didn’t want to have to stab Lexi too. Me and Lexi went to the house on the property. We went to the kitchen and the pantry door swung open by itself. Lexi and I were scared and thought that the house was haunted. So, we got out of the house fast. The End

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 55 Pierce’s Pages (continued) GOING TO THE SHERINGHAM LIGHTHOUSE by Pierce On the drive to the lighthouse, I was talking to my friends Kota and Ethan. I was feeling very excited to get there. I don’t know about my friends. My dad was driving us to the lighthouse. I could not wait to get to the lighthouse. When we arrived at the lighthouse there, I could almost see the lighthouse. The tree branches were damp from the night before, when we were walking down the trail to the lighthouse. The birds were chirping and when we finally got to the lighthouse, it was daytime, so the light was not on. I found a machine that makes whale sounds behind the lighthouse. When we were done, we went into the lighthouse. The light in the lighthouse was old. The light still worked, though it was very dusty inside. When we were walking down the stairs to the bottom, I saw a lot of spider webs and there were bugs in the webs. It looked like the bugs were in there for a long time. When we got out of the lighthouse, there was a cabin outside of the lighthouse. It looked like it was a small museum. There was a light for the lighthouse in it. It looked like the previous light for the lighthouse. It looked old.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 57 Sandra’s Pages (continued) PROTECTING THE LIGHTHOUSE by Sandra One day, a tiny fairy village was preparing for a storm. The village was called “Misty Meadows” and it was full of fairies, lighthouse fairies; they are the protectors of the giant lighthouse there. When you look up in the sky you can see lots of fairies flying everywhere, all with different colored wings. When you look at the lighthouse, you see hundreds of wildflowers in the grass. In the village, there were three best friends called Pearl, Daffodil and Cedar, and they all had different powers! Pearl had the power to talk to marine life, Daffodil had the power to heal and grow all plants with her hands and Cedar had the power to become any tree of her choosing. Cedar always wished she had different powers. Cedar and Daffodil suddenly heard a strange noise, and Pearl had been talking to an otter. Pearl gasped and said that the otter had told her that the storm would be so bad it would tear the lighthouse down. That night no one could sleep knowing what was to come. The next day everyone was trying to think of ways to stop the storm. Several hours later, no one had any ideas, that is except for Cedar, Daffodil & Pearl; they had been talking at their sleepover. Their idea was that Cedar would become a tree and wrap around the lighthouse to protect it, and if the storm would hurt the tree, Daffodil would use her powers to heal her, and Pearl would tell the animals to make a barricade for the waves! And when the storm came, they did just that! The thunder was roaring and there was lightning flashing. IT WORKED! And everyone in the town was safe! Cedar even felt better about her powers. THE END

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 58 Titus’ Pages THE LIGHT TOWER “Why I like this photo is because I like seeing the ocean next to the lighthouse, and it just looks good. And why did I choose it? I just wanted a picture of something about what I came for.” Titus’ Photo Selection:

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 59 THE LIGHTHOUSE TOWER by Titus Titus’ Pages (continued) When I was at the lighthouse, we got phones that we could take pictures with. It was an excellent time. We had a fun time taking pictures. We looked at the big lighthouse, and it felt like it was 1000 feet high. Me and Mikey stuck together. Me and Mikey looked up at the lighthouse, and I felt weird from how tall it was.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 61 DRAGON KNIGHT by Westan Westan’s Pages (continued) Chapter 1: THE KNIGHT I was hunting for a cow and I saw a knight with a sword. I flew away and he saw me, and he ran away. The next day, there was an army and they were coming to my cave! I climbed out of my cave. I was a blue dragon so I’m a lightning dragon. I flew away. It was raining. I saw a lighthouse and there was a barn, so I decided to rest for the night. In the morning, I heard banging. I was looking at the door and I checked what it was, cuz there was a bunch of machines running the lighthouse. There is no sign of humans, so I was safe. At least I thought. But when the robots saw me, they started to attack me. I said “I came in peace, and I wasn’t going to hurt them,” but they kind of started attacking me, so I flew to another Lighthouse. There were humans, but they looked like Dragons. I went over there and they greeted me with a party. I was who they called, me, the Dragon Knight. I was in the Dragon family. I really like this, but I was unstoppable. So I thought, until the region Dragon King. He was the strongest, and he took me while I was asleep. I’m the Royal King’s strongest in his arsenal, the second strongest being in the world. THE END!

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 65 Exploring the Lighthouse A Big Thank-You And finally, but most of all, we want to thank Principal Tess Vally and teachers Lynelle Ridewood, Kevin Pearson, Zach Thompson and Mikayla Little, and in particular the students at École Poirier for making this project so enjoyable. We want to thank Tom Harris - Telus, for donating the cellphone cameras for the students to use. Without this support, the program would not have been possible. This project was carried out by the Society’s partners: Change Canada Consultants Ltd. Our thanks to them: Ian Fawcett (coordinator & photographer), Kathleen Arnason (author and story-teller) and Bill Turner (for helping develop and implement the program). This project was conducted in partnership with the National Trust for Land & Culture (BC), who provided technical assistance and equipment throughout the project. Our thanks also to SPLPS volunteers for helping at the site and with the setup of the program, and to the Society’s members and supporters who provided the financing for the program. Our thanks to the District of Sooke for providing a Community Grant to help finance the program.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 66 Exploring the Lighthouse Raising Funds to Protect the Lighthouse And finally, something a little different... Just like our heritage...don’t discard it, look again! Projects such as the protection and restoration of Sheringham Point Lighthouse depend upon the generosity of people who care about what we are trying to accomplish, and who want to help. Much of the funding for this project so far has been provided by individuals who have stepped forward to make a donation. However, in order to ensure that the Lighthouse can be well cared for in the future, and to enable us to continue providing educational opportunities at the Lighthouse - such as this program - we need to raise additional funds. Can you help? We have set up a fundraising page on the Society’s website to make it easy to donate (all donations over $10.00 will receive a charitable tax receipt). You can find it at: https://sheringhamlighthouse.ca/get-involved-2/make-a-donation/ THANK YOU! Anyone who takes photographs knows that things don’t always turn out as planned. A click at the wrong time, a shake of the camera or a wrong setting can produce something entirely unintended. Often, the results of these situations are simply discarded. But sometimes, with a bit of luck, and with a willingness to look again with a fresh eye and an open mind, the results can be startling. We’ve collected a number of the images created by the children during their visit to the lighthouse that didn’t quite turn out as intended, but that struck us as beautiful abstract images nontheless. We’ve called this collection “UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES”, and we hope they will inspire you to look again at our heritage treasures like Sheringham Point Lighthouse, and make a donation to help us ensure its conservation. Take a look at these few samples on the next page, we think you’ll be amazed!
