Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 4 The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society In 2003, the Government of Canada declared that the historic Sheringham Point Lighthouse was no longer needed to ensure maritime safety in the Juan de Fuca Strait. Advances in technology meant that the Lighthouse could now be discarded — torn down, sold off for other uses or, simply, left to rot and eventually to fall apart. In response, a small group of neighbours gathered to form the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. They were determined that the Lighthouse, which had stood for almost 100 years as a symbol of their community, would not be lost. For the next twelve years, the Society’s volunteers worked extremely hard to fight for the Lighthouse’s protection, doing everything they could to raise awareness about the threat to their community heritage. They rallied their community, local businesses and other groups, lobbied and strategized with all levels of government, raised funds and, eventually, put forward a plan to take on the responsibility to care for and conserve the Lighthouse themselves. In 2015, the Society’s efforts were successful. The government agreed to transfer the property to the Society and also, at the same time, they officially designated Sheringham Point Lighthouse a “Canadian Heritage Lighthouse”. As the new owners and stewards, the Society worked for the next seven years to restore the Lighthouse to its former glory, and to make sure it will always be accessible for the public to enjoy and appreciate. The Lighthouse is now protected and is open to the public as a community heritage park.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 5 Children today have a greater range of opportunities open to them than at any time in recent history, and greater freedoms than ever before. Thriving in this chaotic environment requires an ability for all children to be able to find a strong foundation from which they can build their lives, achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. For most of us, that foundation starts with the family, and extends outward into the community. Just as a tree needs deep roots to grow tall and strong, so does a child draw nourishment and vitality from his or her own roots, from the comfort of belonging, from having a place to call home. Understanding and, in particular, experiencing their own connections to the people and places around them is invaluable for children in so many ways. Learning about their own and their community’s history provides a base from which they can explore their world and help them answer that most fundamental of questions: “How did this come to be?” Our history is not just an academic pursuit to be left to historians. It’s not just about dates and far-off locations, nor is it just about great battles, world-shaking events, the comings and goings of kings and queens and presidents. It’s also about the lives of the people who lived here before, their struggles and triumphs, their thoughts and ideas that nurtured their families, built their communities and shaped their world. It’s about the stories our grandfathers told us, and those from our neighbours. We all have stories in our lives and they are, in their way, as full of drama and intrigue as any of the great sagas of our history classes. It is our stories that shape us, that make us who we are. Our history – our heritage – is best lived and experienced, understood through the things we can see and touch and feel, and passed on in a way that warms our hearts and feeds our imaginations. It’s why we need to work hard to conserve, appreciate and celebrate our heritage — not just the castles and stately mansions, but the cottages and the old lighthouses as well. Those remnants of our past have stories to tell. “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” ~ Albert Einstein Exploring the Lighthouse Sooke Elementary Division 3

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 6 ...The Program To help children in the local area strengthen their connections to their own community, we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to visit Sheringham Point Lighthouse, to learn about its history and operations, to appreciate its significance and understand why it is being conserved. It was also our hope to inspire them – and, through them, their families and friends – to take a personal interest in further exploring their community and helping to protect and celebrate their heritage and the future of the Lighthouse. We developed this short program, called “Exploring the Lighthouse”. This program has several parts: 1. History and Operations – we provide a short presentation outlining the history of the Lighthouse, and also talk about how lighthouses work and their role in maritime safety and community development. 2. Visit to the Lighthouse – the students visit the Lighthouse to see firsthand what it’s all about, and to experience its remarkable character and ambience. 3. Reflections – we ask the students to creatively express their impressions of the Lighthouse site by: • Taking photographs while they are at the site, focusing on the features that capture their attention/imagination. • Writing a story (either fictional or non-fiction) about a Lighthouse. 4. Commemorative Book - we compile the students’ photographs and stories into this commemorative book, which is being provided online to all the children, their families and the whole community. Exploring the Lighthouse It is the Society’s hope that we will be able to find the ongoing resources to make this project an annual event, and to make it available to all the elementary schools in the local area, with the result being that all children growing up in this part of the world will have the opportunity – through their visit to the lighthouse – to better understand and appreciate the community they call home. Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 7 A Brief History of the Lighthouse... Sheringham Point Lighthouse was built in 1912, and illuminated for the first time on September 30 of that year. The Lighthouse was built in response to the tragic wreck of the steamship SS Valencia, on January 22, 1906. En route from San Francisco to Victoria and Seattle, late at night and in rough weather, the Valencia missed the turn into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and steamed directly on to the rocks near Pachena Point. Of the 173 people aboard, 136 were lost. Creation of the Lighthouse began in 1911, with the purchase of 4 acres of land from Shirley resident Edwin Clark. The following year, the lighthouse tower was built, along with a small boathouse and a house for the lighkeeper and his family. The first lightkeeper, Eustace Arden, arrived in September 1912, and continued at the site until 1946. The light itself was a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens. Originally lit by oil lamps (and later by electric lamps), it was made up of many prisms which focused the light into a powerful beam that could be seen up to 25 km away. The lens Exploring the Lighthouse Under construction - 1912 Newly completed - ca 1912

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 8 rotated through a clockwork mechanism of pulleys and weights – each about180 kg – that had to be re-wound every three hours. Because of the size and weight of the lens, it was seated in a bed of liquid mercury, to allow it to turn without much friction. In 1925, a fog-alarm building was added to the site, and a new “diaphone” (two-tone) fog-horn was installed. Originally a wooden, peaked-roof building, constructed in front of the tower, this building was replaced in 1976 with the concrete block building that is still on site. The diesel engines that provided power for the site were also located in this building. A number of other structures were added to the site over the years, including radio towers and sheds, a fallout shelter (that was actually never used as such, but came to be used to grow mushrooms instead), other utility buildings and, in 1964, a new, more modern house for the Lightkeeper. During the 1980s, the Lighthouse was automated and it was finally destaffed in 1989 when the last lightkeeper left. Except for the tower and the engine room (fog-alarm building), all the other structures on site were taken down, or deliberately burned, to avoid vandalism. Left largely unattended for the next thirty years, the Lighthouse began to deteriorate and was in danger of being lost forever. Then, after many years of lobbying by the local community, in 2015, it was transferred to the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. It has now been restored to its former glory, and is open to the public as a community heritage park. ...A Brief History of the Lighthouse Exploring the Lighthouse Following construction of the fog alarm building - ca 1926 Following construction of the boat house - 1912

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 9 Exploring the Lighthouse “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” ~ Dorothea Lange, Photographer Reflecting what you see... Photography is a powerful tool for exploring the world around us. It causes us to focus more intently on what we are looking at, to look more closely, pay attention to the details, and take nothing for granted. It creates an intimate connection with the subject and with the environment that surrounds it. While it’s a very personal process, the end result is universal. To appreciate a photograph requires no ability to read, no language in common, no prerequisite level of education or life experience. Just an ability to see and to feel, and a willingness to participate. For this part of the program, we provided each student with a cell phone camera and some basic instruction in its use, as well as a brief overview of the art of photography. Then we asked them to take photographs while they were at the lighthouse, focusing on the things that caught their attention and/or their imagination. When we returned to the school later, each student chose his or her favourite photo, and explained why they chose it. There were lots of amazing photographs – creative and insightful! The following pages showcase their chosen photographs. Enjoy! “Photography represents the world we know, and suggests a world beyond what we can see. Creativity is the gap between perception and knowledge.” ~ Emmet Gowin, Photographer

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 10 Exploring the Lighthouse “Tell me the facts and I’ll learn. Tell me the truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” ~ An old First Nations proverb “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” ~ Rudyard Kipling, Author Telling your stories... Story-telling has always formed the underlying basis of human communication. Our stories are the ways that we connect ourselves to one another and to our communities. They help define who we are and where come from. Children naturally understand the power of story-telling, and we wanted to provide them with tools and strategies to explore and expand their own story-telling abilities, to share their own stories and to learn from others. Author Kathleen Arnason spoke to the students about the basic elements of creative writing, focusing on getting the children to explore their own feelings and values and to think about what is important and has meaning for them. Each student was asked to write a story (factual or fictional) about a lighthouse, incorporating what they had learned and what they had seen throughout the day. The following pages contain the results of that work, and they speak for themselves. Kathleen talks about the importance of storytelling and creativity. Ian tells the story about how the Lighthouse was built.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 13 Abishai’s Pages (continued) THE LIGHTHOUSE STORY by Abishai Once there was a time where a family of sea wolves lived happily together. They were happy until now, when winter, the most changeling season had shown up and it’s cold and windy. There is no such animal that is ready to get out of their den. Alpha female says to the alpha male “how long will we survive without food?” Alpha male, named Dagger, gets out of the den to hunt. It was extremely cold and windy. Dagger smells rotten meat .He followed the smell and he saw a dead rotten body. He had no choice left but to take the body to his den. Everyone ate it. They saw that Dagger is sick and couldn’t hunt any more. Now the alpha female had to hunt in the dark forest. While she was hunting, she heard a loud bang. When she ran to the bang she saw a crashed ship which was importing fishes. One of the boxes fell down and due to the pressure the box opened. The alpha female called her family, including Dagger. They tried their best, and somehow take the fishes to the den. They all had a great festival that night. They stored the fishes until spring. Every year the shipped crashed. So they were very sorry for the people’s family, and they than built more than 100 lighthouses. There was built the Sheringham Lighthouse in 1912. It was once renovated and is in good condition till 2024. It has saved many ships and for people, Sheringham Lighthouse is a hero.

Mark, Bill, and Chris were working at the lighthouse that evening, it was a very old lighthouse, and it was haunted. One day Chris wanted to see the top of the lighthouse where no one was allowed, so he went up the ladder and then suddenly the ladder fell, and Chris was stuck on the top of the lighthouse. He called out for Mark and Bill, but no one heard him. The next day Mark and Bill went to the lighthouse to fix the power after the storm. Then they wondered, Where’s Chris? They look up at the top of the lighthouse and saw Chris at the top of the lighthouse, then they say, “Chris how did you get up there, no one is allowed up there,’’ Mark said. Chris said, “I wanted to see what was up here.’’ Mark and Bill tried everything they could do to get Chris down, but they had to get back to work. After their shift was over Mark and Bill almost got Chris down, but something terrifying happened. While Mark was washing his hands in the bathroom the reflection of him turned still while he was walking out. Mark noticed this and said to Bill ‘’my reflection was still as a rock while I was walking out of the bathroom”. Bill went to see if it was still there but no sign of it. While Bill was fixing the power in the lighthouse, Bill’s ladder fell, but Bill grabbed on to something and saved his life. Bill told Mark about the whole story then Mark said “I think there’s ghost here”. Then they went to check on Chris, but Chris was not okay. The giant prism in the top of the lighthouse was almost crushing Chris. Bill and Mark pushed the prism off of Chris, but his arm was crushed and there’s no hospital around the area. So, Mark and Bill tried to call 911 but there was no service. Then, Mark had a great idea that they would get toilet paper and wrap up Chris’s crushed arm with the toilet paper. But while they are getting the toilet paper, the mirror got taken out of the wall and then flung at Bill, getting glass shards in his eye, piercing through his iris. And then Bill stumbled into a stall and fell in the toilet, but he couldn’t move his head up and he drowned in the toilet and died. Then over at the top of the lighthouse, Chris died due to blood loss. Mark was in shock that his best friend died in a toilet cause of a stupid ghost, so Mark ran to check up on Chris, but he saw that he died also. Mark decided to end things once and for all so he pulled out his cross he had for 3 years. So he went to the bathroom and pointed it everywhere and he felt great all of a sudden, a sigh of relief. So Mark left the lighthouse and buried Chris and Bill and cried for 10 minutes then went home. THE END.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 17 Alix’s Pages (continued) THE CURSED LIGHTHOUSE by Alix One time there was a lighthouse. Sheringham Point Lighthouse to be exact. The place was filled with animals and nature. Every year three classes from any school would visit the lighthouse. But one day, something unusual happened. As the waves crashed against the shore, three classes came to visit. “Woah, this place is cool!” Student one exclaimed. But it seemed like she was the only one there… everything was dead silent. “Umm hello?? Is anyone here?” She seemed worried and frightened. Everyone was hiding behind trees and bushes. Of course, she was frightened. An unusual voice called her name. “Lily”. “Huh? Who’s there?” Lily had no clue what was going on until she realized that only she could hear the voice. She ran to a bush and hid, unaware that everybody had disappeared again. She looked around, cluelessly. (Where is everyone?) she thought. Storm clouds began to form incredibly fast. This was odd because this has not happened ever since the lighthouse was built unless there was a curse. Lily ran inside the light house. The ocean waves got bigger every second, she had to run away. She ran as fast as she could away from the lighthouse. As fast as she could. It was getting hard to see because of the rain. Within minutes Lily was soaked. After a long distance of running, she found shelter in a small cottage that was abandoned. Everything that a house would need was there. She made some hot chocolate and sat down by the fireplace, finally getting warm. (How and why did this happen?) she thought. She went to a bedroom and settled in for the night. THE END

I chose it because my story is called: ‘The Secrets of the Lighthouse’.” Brayden’s Photo Selection: THE SECRETS OF THE LIGHTHOUSE by Brayden After a year of waiting, the scientists finally got the rock out of the ocean. As they expected, it had a huge Mutonium core! One of the scientists had gone missing. So, I was given a search dog, his name is Sparky, he is a good boy. We were happy at the lighthouse for a while, but then the leftover Mutonium from the rock’s core formed into a PERSON! His name is Mutonium Man, he is very nice, and the strongest man in the world! And, since the lighthouse was getting old and rusty, cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 19 Brayden’s Pages (continued) we all spent a few days fixing the lighthouse. But we found a secret door under the lighthouse! The rust had sealed the door shut, but Mutonium Man pried it open! Sparky started barking a lot, and we knew that he was telling us that the door wasn’t safe, so we left the door alone. We went and told the construction team about it and they gave us the blueprints of the lighthouse. Turns out, there is a HUGE basement underneath the lighthouse! The construction team also said it’s been boarded up for years so we should wear hardhats on our way in. So, we all made our way into the basement of the lighthouse, shaking with fear. I went down first, sparky followed soon after, Mutonium Man was a bit slower, but it was okay. When we got down, I turned on the power and wow! It was cool, there was a submarine, the lighthouse’s generators, a bunker, a secret door, wait what? Turns out, there was a secret door inside the already secret basement of the mysterious lighthouse. Mutonium Man tried to pry the door open, but he couldn’t do it. Every single day, Mutonium Man would keep trying to pry the door open until one day, when he opened it! “It’s extraordinary here!!” he said. But his joy did not last long, when we all were in the room, the lights turned on and the door sealed shut again, what we saw shook all three of us to the core: the scientist who went missing, all set up with robo-claws and lasers. He started shooting the lasers at us, so we ran away and dodged the lasers. Then, sparky bit off one of his claws, “AAAUghhrgh” he screamed. Sparky ran and hid and that left just me, the mad scientist and Mutonium Man. Both me and Mutonium Man ran at the same time to the scientist and ripped off one claw and a laser “YOU’RE GOING TO REGRET THAT!! YOU FORGOT ABOUT ME FOR A WHOLE YEAR!” he said. Mutonium man whispered in my ear: “I have a plan. Get Sparky to safety, both of you hide,” he said. Then he made himself into a liquid and solidified on the scientist’s face. The scientist started shooting lasers in all directions and then he made a fatal error, he hit one of the generators. All power turned off, opening all doors, and then the lighthouse burst into flames. and the whole thing started crumbling. Good thing we had hardhats to help. As we were escaping, we heard faint screams in the distance “YOU CAN’T WIN! YOU WONT, I WILL WIN! HAHAHAHAHAAAGHHHH” as we escaped, all that remained was me, Sparky, and the ruins of the lighthouse. Eloise starts to freak out. Iris says “Guys its not that big of a deal.” Eloise says “What do you mean not big of a deal?” Iris says “What all we lost is my dad. Wait, where’s Caitlyn?’’ Eloise says “OMG did she die?” Iris says “So why does it matter if she did?” Eloise says “Lets get something to eat, like berries.” She says while crying. They go and find some berries. After they found a patch of berries, Iris goes over to some white berries “Ooooh these look good.” “I don’t think you should eat that.” Iris picks off three berries and starts eating them. Eloise says “It’s so cold.” Iris says “Let’s go to the lighthouse and sleep there.” Eloise says “But I saw some rats in there.” Iris says “So? Ew I just got mud on my nails, I’m going to cry.” Eloise says “I hate rats. Let’s just go to sleep.” “OK.” They go to sleep. In the morning they go find more berries to eat, Iris of course eats more white berries. Iris says, “I don’t feel good.” “Obviously, are you dumb?” says Eloise. Once it hit night they went to sleep. In the morning. “Iris wake up now. Iris get up it’s not funny, come on you’re scaring me. Iris please.” Eloise sits in silence with tears running down her face.”I told you it wasn’t a good idea Iris.” After a few days she was hungry and she was refusing to eat, until she heard a helicopter. She ran out of the lighthouse waving her arms in the air. The helicopter landed and took her and she was united with her family with a little bit of trauma. THE END. Now she is scared of water and when she sees it, she cries.

You could hear the birds chirping in the morning way high up in the trees. In the ocean you could hear the waves crashing. You could hear the wolves howling. You could see all the dangerous animals. The male wolves are hunting for the females. Same thing for the eagle, they hunt for the female. The bears are catching fish. The orcas are eating all the sea lions. The otters are eating clams, as the baby sea wolves wait for the parents to bring the food. The bear cubs are going on a walk looking for food they could eat. Orcas are going on a hunt for sea lions, if there’s any left. As the sun sets, you could hear the owls. It is dark and most of the animals are sleeping, but some are awake like owls and racoons. The racoons are looking for leftover food from the bears and the wolves. The animals are starting to wake up. They do most of the stuff they did the day before, but this day is different. Both the bear and the wolves find a dead whale but who will get it first? The bear is outnumbered so he loses. After the wolves finish the whale, they go back to the den. Salmon are going upstream to lay eggs before they die. The otters are staying together trying to not get eaten by the orcas. Way up high on the mountains you could here the elks calling trying to find each other. The cougar is sneaking up to the elk slowly but surely when he’s close enough he strikes. THE END

If it hit a person they would get super powers. But then she heard a bomb noise outside. She ran outside she saw an army helicopter that was dropping bombs. They didn’t know what it was called because there was no sign. Chase is curious and Sally is a bit scared, and Karl likes exploring and being brave. Then Chase walks over to the ledge and he looks down and sees a something that scared him. Then Chase looks back over, and it was just a fish. Meanwhile Karl is exploring around the lighthouse. Sally went with Karl because Sally was too scared to be alone. Then Tony the eagle saw the kids and right away wanted them gone. Tony was just so mad he just wanted them gone as soon as possible and off his turf. Then Karl went in the lighthouse to explore and Sally was with Karl. Sally was too scared to go in so she waited outside. Then Karl found something weird and strange Karl had never saw it in his whole life. Sally felt rain drops, then it was pouring rain in no time. Meanwhile Chase was curious about what happened to the lighthouse because it had claw marks and it looked torn up. Chase was looking up and down and all around to see what happened, it really looked beat up. Chase looked at the water and saw that it was plain white no blue just all plain white. Chase thought that was weird and strange. Karl was still exploring around the lighthouse holding the weird thing that he found. Karl was looking at the weird thing and Karl really didn’t know what it was. Meanwhile Tony has had enough with the kids and he wanted them gone for eternity, so he tried to fight with his talons. Sally ran and hid because she was really scared. Karl was fighting back. Karl was getting cuts and scrapes from Tony’s talons and was getting really hurt and injured. Then with the speck of his eye Chase found a rusted-up sword. Chase ran and got the sword and gave it to Karl. Then Karl stabbed the sword through Tony’s stomach. Tony fell to the ground and Karl was in pain and full of cuts and injuries. Then Chase remembered about the plain white water and told Karl to jump in to see if it helps the cuts and injuries. Karl said “I would do anything to not be in pain.” So Chase said “Jump!” and Karl jumped in and came out of the water with zero cuts on his body. Sally came out of hiding and checked in on Karl to see if he was ok. He was fine. Chase hid Tony’s body in a bush. They all wanted to leave so they left the lighthouse and never returned ever again.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 35 Gabe’s Pages (continued) THE BUILDER BEARS by Gabe On a dark windy night at the Sheringham Point Lighthouse there were 6 bears. Gerald, Bob, Derek, Gary, Collin and Sven. These bears were all sleeping in the lighthouse, but since it was so windy the Sheringham Lighthouse blew over! We woke up right as it started to creak and crack. We dashed outside. It was so cold and windy. I could smell the ocean. I’m usually happy to smell the ocean but this time I was scared. CHAPTER 1: START THE REBUILD I found somewhere to sleep in the forest. It wasn’t as warm as the lighthouse, but it will have to do for now. In the morning as soon as we woke up we started gathering supplies for the lighthouse. We started by making tools to maybe go and mine in the earth, so then we can get some more supplies such as iron. We also made an axe so we can gather wood to make a hut so we have somewhere to sleep for the nights. We are rebuilding this place. We also got it for the wood to make the scaffolding to support it up while we are building. When we were trying to mine, the entire mineshaft that we built collapsed and caused it to fall! Luckily no one was in it at the time. And from mining all that stuff out we collected enough iron and copper to start rebuilding the lighthouse! It was not enough but it was a good start to the rebuilding process. We were lucky that it didn’t hit the other electrical house near it, but we were also pretty lucky to not get crushed by the Sheringham Lighthouse itself! After a few hours we finally finished the base of the lighthouse. While this was all happening, my friend was building the big light at the top of the lighthouse. The light was probably the most tedious part of the whole lighthouse building process. After a while later we are about 35% done the lighthouse, and the sun is setting and the air is getting cold, so we are going to bed. CHAPTER 2: MORE FRIENDS The sun rises and we see some more bear friends right up the hill. He yells out to him and his friends “Hey!” cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 36 Gabe’s Pages (continued) so then he could get their attention. Then after he asked them to help them so they could try to rebuild the Sheringham Lighthouse and have somewhere to sleep again. After some consideration, they said no, because they had their own family to take care of. But they said that they will visit once-in-a-while. When Gerald got back to the lighthouse, his friends did so much work that by 12:00 PM they were already 50% done. By about 1:00 PM his friends were almost done the main building and almost ready to put the light in but there was a problem, they didn’t have the mercury! CHAPTER 3: FINDING MERCURY This was not good! They wanted to get this lighthouse done fast. Not only for better shelter, but also for the ships passing by the lighthouse at night. So they really need to finish this lighthouse fast, before the sun sets and the air gets dry and cold. So after some consideration, they decided to put all hands on deck and go mining to find lava to turn into mercury. After a few hours they finally found some mercury so they go back up to the lighthouse, mercury in hand. They put it in the pool under the area where the light is supposed to go they wind it up and run. Now it’s the hard part. They either wait until dawn to paint the lighthouse or pull an all nighter and get it done for the morning. CHAPTER 4: PAINT, PAINT, PAINT! They decided that they were going to pull an all nighter just to get it done. They made some paint out of dye and a lot of tree sap so then they will have more than enough paint. At the end of the night, they still had a lot of work to do because some people fell asleep on the job. They thought of making day shifts and night shifts. The day shift was going well until someone tripped hit the glass and cracked it. So one of the people who work on the night shift had to know also. They worked to make a fire, smelt sand and make some glass. Bob, the person who made the glass, installed it right as all the painting was finished. They decided to let the paint dry so then they could sleep again in there tomorrow. CHAPTER 5: THE END After all that work, they were finally done and ready to sleep in their nice cozy home once again. THE END. THE BUILDER BEARS (cont.)

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 39 THE SCARY LIGHTHOUSE by Hunter Hunter’s Pages (continued) Once upon a time six girls were having a sleepover together. Their names were Sophia, Falisha, Bella, Quinn, Tiffany, and Victoria. Their ages were all around fifteen to nineteen. Sophia said, “We should go on my dad’s boat!” So then everyone yelled “YES!!!!!!!!!” Once they got on the boat they went to the middle of nowhere. They got their swimsuits on and held hands and jumped into the freezing cold water and swam back to the boat as fast as they could and jumped back into the boat and then back into the water, and kept doing that until it got dark. Once it got dark, they got back into the boat and got changed into their dry pajamas. When they get changed Quinn says, “IT IS TWELVE AM!!!!” Then they all yell at the same time “WHAT?” So then Sophia started the engine of the boat, but it didn’t work. Sophia then said “It is not turning on.” Then they yelled “What do you mean it is not working!” So they got off the boat and sat down, and then they heard something in the lighthouse (scratch, scratch, scratch). Then Bella went in and did not come back out of the lighthouse. So Sophia, Falisha, Quinn, Tiffany, and Victoria went to the other side of the island and fired the flare gun to get someone’s attention. At this point, it was 2:00am and everyone but Falisha was sleeping, but they actually were dead. Falisha heard a boat noise then she saw Sophia’s dad in a boat with everyone’s parents in the boat too. So then she got up and ran into the freezing cold water and got up into the boat and started eating the food that was in there. Then the parents got out of the boat and started to look for them. Then the parents found them dead on the rocks, so they turned around and left with the only person alive, Falishia. So, she learned her lesson of taking a boat without permission. The end!

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 41 DIMENSIONS by Jae Jae’s Pages (continued) The music is blaring, and Allie’s head is pounding. All she can smell is sea water and fish. Allie lives on a boat on the coast of Vancouver Island. But right now, they are at sea because they are celebrating her sister Sophie’s 12th birthday. There are a lot of people aboard, mostly adults because Allie and Sophie are homeschooled. But it is kind of nice instead of playing on a playground like most kids they get to swim in the ocean. Allie’s headache gets so bad she must go to her room to lay down. She walks down the boat’s hallway as the boat goes right and left swaying through the ocean. Allie plops herself on to the soft fluffy black bed and falls asleep. Suddenly Allie startles awake because there is a big thud coming from the front of the boat. She runs up to the party and sees everyone crying and worried about what will happen next. What’s wrong Allie naked out of breath and worried. Nobody can say anything, so Allie’s mother just points to the front of the boat. Allie rushes over to see the boat has a massive hole that’s collecting more and more water by the second. By now half of the boat is gone. Allie runs to go find Sophie but she is nowhere to be found. Where could she be? Allie wonders. All of a sudden, the boat drops and everybody is fully submerged in the water. Then Allie hears her sister scream for help. Allie swims as fast as she can over to Sophie. Allie grabs her and turns around to see the cliff they crashed on. Allie sees beach and a pathway up to the cliff. Allie swims as fast as possible to get there. All she can smell is oil. Allie doesn’t care as long as she can get to the beach. She swims and swims until finally she gets there Allie collapses to the ground with Sophie on her back. She is exhausted. Allie catches her breath and turns around to see any survivors. There is none. Allie rushes up the path with Sophie on her back. Allie steps on a prickle berry branch as she is heading up the path. She winces but keeps heading up. When she gets to the top, she sits on the ground. She can feel the bumpy texture of the rocks. She pulled the thorns out of her foot, to see it didn’t look like an ordinary thorn; it was white, just the color white. When Allie got enough energy to stand up she did and she looked around for shelter. She saw a lighthouse. Allie dropped cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 42 Jae’s Pages (continued) DIMENSIONS (cont.) Sophie on the ground carefully and walked over to it. There on the door was a sign that read Sheringham Lighthouse. Allie tried to open it, but it was locked. Allie stood there for hours trying to open the door, but it didn’t work. Allie went to pick up Sophie when she saw flowers in the distance. She threw Sophie on her back and ran to them. She touched one of them because they looked like a flower from a story their mother used to tell them at nighttime and zap. The world looked so different they were 2 DIMENSIONAL! Allie was so surprised she touched some more of those flowers hoping it would take her back to where she was, but it didn’t. It took her somewhere like where she was but not. It’s like it took her back in time. There were really weird looking cars and in the cars, there were no seatbelts! It looked very unsafe. The buildings were so tall and weird looking. They weren’t all glass like the ones near the boat. As she was looking at one building something caught her eye. It was another flower! The only problem was it was inside someone’s house. Allie knew it was risky but she had to try to get to it. Allie grabbed her sister by the wrist and hoisted Sophie onto her back. Allie and Sophie were hiding in an alley beside the building waiting till night. After a few hours it started getting darker and everybody had gone into their houses to have dinner. Sophie was mumbling something. Allie tried to make out what Sophie was saying but couldn’t. Until Sophie said it loud and clear. Hungry… hungry. Cried Sophie. Allie sat Sophie up against the wall and told her I will get food. Allie ran through the street Hoping to find a dollar. But there was no luck Allie and Sophie would just have to stick out the night. When Allie got back to the alley everyone was already asleep so it was the perfect time to strike. Allie tried opening the front door but there was no luck. Then Allie went around to the back door which was open. She tiptoed inside trying not to make a noise. Allie touched the flower sending her and Sophie into a dimension where their family was complete it was just like there original dimension. Except they never died and her and Sophie’s parents where there. It was perfect.

You need to stop complaining, it’s annoying,” The girl named Elena told her. “Are we there yet?” Harper asked. “Actually, we are,” Elena said as they saw an old, abandoned lighthouse in the distance. “YES!” Harper yelled. “Could you speak a LITTLE LOUDER? Harper had stopped running once she reached a tall metal fence blocking visitors from entering the lighthouse. ”Um… Elena?” Harper said, looking slightly scared. “What? It’s just a fence. I bet I can climb over it anyways,” Elena said. Elena started climbing the metal fence. She made it about halfway before she called down to Harper, who was still on the ground. “Come on Harper! It’s not that hard,” “Okay, I guess,” Harper said. Harper began climbing the fence. Elena made it to the top and sat on the top. “Ugh, this fence is so pokeyOWW!” Elena yelled. “ARE YOU OKAY ELENA?!” Harper called, still climbing. “Yeah, i just cut my hand on the fence,” Elena said. Harper made it to the top a few seconds later. “Whew, that was hard. Wait… how do we get down?” Harper said while trying to get some air to her lungs. “We climb down. Sooner than later, because sitting on this hurts! Oh, I almost forgot, do you have any bandages?” Elena asked. “Of course. Here,” Harper said while getting the bandages from her coat pocket. She handed them to Elena, who was wiping her hand on her coat. “Thanks,” Elena said, wrapping the bandage around her hand. “Now let’s go down,” Harper said. Elena and Harper were around halfway down when the rain started pouring down. “ELENA! I’M SLIPPING!” Harper screamed. “HARPER! HANG ON!” Elena yelled back. “OKA- AHHHHHHHH!” Harper shrieked as her fingers slipped and she started falling. “OH NO!” Elena screamed as she watched her friend fall. “OWWWW!!!” Harper screamed. “MY ANKLE!!” “HARPER, I’M COMING DOWN!” Elena shouted. Elena started climbing down as fast as she could without falling like Harper did. “Harper!” Elena said. “Um… yeah I think this was a terrible idea,” Harper said. “Wow, look! There’s the lighthouse!” Elena said happily. “One problem… actually two problems. One, I just sprained my ankle and two, it’s raining pretty hard right now,” Harper pointed out. “It’s not THAT bad. Just come on,” Elena said. Both of them started running towards the lighthouse. “OW OW OW OW!” Harper said for the twenty-seventh time. “Oh my gosh Harper. We are here so PLEASE stop complaining,” Elena told her. “YAY!” Harper said loudly. “SHUT UP! WHAT IF SOMEONE IS IN THERE!?” Elena yelled at her. “Well they definitely heard you,” Harper said. The lighthouse towered above both Elena and Harper in the fog. Elena stepped up the small set of stairs and into the lighthouse. “This is great!” She said. “Uh, Elena? How are we going to get home?” Harper asked with a worried look on her face. “Oh… I um… don’t know,” Elena admitted. “We can spend the night up there though,” Elena said. “Fine.” Harper started lookLIGHTHOUSE STORY (cont.) cont...

She had found some small sticks and other flammable things that would catch on fire easily. Elena lit the match and the sticks caught fire. “Perfect,” she said. “I’ve got some food that we can cook,” Harper said. She found a small metal tin and started cooking some packaged meat she had brought. “Elena, should I add this packet-” “OF COURSE! ADD ANYTHING!” Elena said. Harper ripped off the top of the packet, completely missing the small red triangle sticker on it. Once the food was finished cooking, Harper called Elena over to eat. Elena took a few bites and said, “This isn’t that bad. Nice job Harper.” “Thanks,” Harper said. Elena finished all the food quickly. “Hey! What about me?” Harper asked. “Oh sorry,” Elena said. ”I guess its fine,” Harper said. “I think we should sleep now,” Elena said. “Alright.” Harper agreed. They both fell asleep. Harper awoke to the dawn sunlight shining through the lighthouse’s cracked windows. She yawned then went to wake up Elena. Elena was cold. “Elena? ELENA?!” Elena was not waking up. “Wait NO! THE SEASONING WAS POISON WASN’T IT!?” Tears ran down Harper’s cheeks. “I’ve poisoned my best friend.” Harper dragged Elena’s dead body to the corner. “Well I guess I’m alone here now.” That thought alone terrified her. “I guess I’ll sleep upstairs now.” Harper climbed up the steep stairs into the place with the light. She sat down. “I feel like I’m forgetting something… Wait! THE FIRE DOWNSTAIRS! WE DIDN’T PUT IT OUT!” Harper ran to look down the stairs and saw that the fire was already spreading to the exit. ”I’m probably dead,” Harper whispered to herself. She watched as the fire spread even more. Suddenly, it started climbing the walls. “OH NO!” Harper yelled. She ran and pressed herself against the windows. The fire got to the light and exploded. The windows shattered and Harper flew out into the cold sea. She started swimming as best as she could to shore. Harper made it to shore and gasped for breath. She realized she was covered with glass cuts on her arms, legs, and face. Harper was vaguely aware of the sound of helicopter propellers. That was all she remembered from then. She woke up two weeks later in a hospital. “Where am I? Where’s Elena?” she asked. “I’m right here. You passed out when we were walking back from school.” “ELENA! YOU’RE ALIVE!” Harper yelled, hugging her best friend. “Of course, I am. Why wouldn’t I be?” Elena looked confused. “But you… you died,” Harper said. “Clearly I’m not Harper!’ Elena said. “Then it was all a dream?” The End.

In the ocean there lived a little fish who loved to swim, his favorite time to swim was in the sunny summer. He was swimming one day to go meet his friends when it started raining. The little fish swam back to his house worried about his parents. The sun started going down, the sea started getting darker and darker, and the little fish started to have tears shedding down his eyes. A few hours later the little fish started to give up when the sun started to come up! The fish finally finds his house. His parents are nowhere to be seen, and the fish yells, “WHY!?!?” In tears. Out of the corner of his cont...

The fish thinks it was his Mom so he runs at the figure in tears and… he starts to feel pain in his fin. It turns out the figure was a killer fish/shark! The fish is bleeding badly, and the fish could not see well enough from the injury so he passes out. The little fish wakes up. “HEY! YOU AWAKE???” the killer fish said. The little fish says yes and the killer fish says he will spare him if he tells everything about him. After 12 hours of nonsense, the killer fish now knows everything about him, the little fish tries to escape but the killer fish yells “JUNIOR!!! You better not try again or you will… DIE!!!” The killer fish gets bored so he tells that he will be releasing oil into the ocean and every one/fish will DIE! HAHAHAHAH! The little fish starts to untie himself in order to stop everyone from being dead. Junior looks around well. The killer fish has a shower in the broken ship hideout, he sees a gun but says it is too violent, so he finds a crowbar and whispers, Perfect! He grabs it with his fin and tugs it on the tie. He rips the ropes in half, then finds a crack in the broken ship and quietly slips through the boards of the ship. He finally is free! But as soon as he said that he saw black stuff in the distance and already knew he was in danger. The killer fish found out that he escaped and pulled the lever. The fish had to act fast, because the oil was spreading more and more. Junior saw a gas mask next to the broken ship and picked it up. Once he knew how to put it on, he put it on and sadly already a 1000 fish had died. He swam fast up to the surface so he could get a better view of the oil and where it had gone, Junior went to where he thought the oil started. It was actually from an ocean oil pipe that the humans forgot to take down. Junior’s actual name was Burlap the fish, but he lied to the killer fish so he would not get hacked on his brand-new phone. Burlap found a big piece of wood that would perfectly fit in the pipe hole, he shoved it in the crack and the oil stopped! He did it! The fish swam home and found his phone and dialed fish911 and said where the killer fish was, at the broken-down shipwreck at Seaside River Town under Sheringham Lighthouse. And he was arrested for murder/ unliving innocent fish. The rest of the oil was sucked up in the vacuum 3000 beta 60, and Burlap was safe, but he turned emo from his family’s death. And also, Burlap got adopted by another family near the seaside river under Sheringham lighthouse. The End… THE BRAVE FISH (cont.)

You immediately get back up to see what it was. You get up and see nothing there, you look around, thinking it’s Max, but Max is over at the lighthouse. You get worried because it’s not Max. You lay back down as you have the chills down your spine. You close your eyes and the same wet, cold, slimy hand grab your ankles, it slowly pulls you in, as you get up and look around. You don’t see anything, but you decide it’s unsafe. As you called Max over, he didn’t respond. You get worried and walk over there. Max is gone… he won’t answer you. As you head back to your spot, you look around and everything you owned is gone. As you run out you see your little brother Max, his eyes are all black and his blood is black. You screamed and cried, trying to escape. As you run out you realize it was all fake, the people, the sunny view, the smell of fruit. No, it was all a lie, you start going insane and then wake up and realize you are in a mental asylum but then you hear banging on the door. Now I want you to think about why you’re in the mental hospital. Are you crazy? Well probably, but you hear banging on the door to let you out, and you get up out of your bed and change clothes. You go outside, and you see your family standing there waiting for you. As you run up to them and give them a big hug, they offer to take you back home and then go to Sheringham Lighthouse. You don’t think too much of it and go home and you look around to find your bathing suit. As you walk around to find it, you look outside your window and you see your little brother Max. He waves and walks away; you grab your bathing suit and head out the door. You and your family get in the car with your dog, Heugo. You get to the Lighthouse and sit near the rocks, it brings back the memories you had, you start having a panic attack and you faint. You hit your head on a rock, and you wake up in a hospital. Not a normal hospital, an abandoned hospital. There were spiders and random human-like figures. You get up in a hospital gown and walk around, and you hear footsteps behind you. You look backwards and see a tall scary figure popping out of the corner. You run and run but you are low on blood so you stop and go into a room and hide behind a table. You pass out of being low on blood, and it ends there… LIGHTHOUSE STORY (cont.)
