Sorority sisters celebrate movie about one of their own

MORRISTOWN: The Pi Theta Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority hosted a private debut
screening of the movie “Hidden Figures” in partnership with Morris County chapter of The Links, and the
Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at the AMC 10 in Morristown last Friday.

“Hidden Figures” depicts the true story of three African American Women – Katherine Johnson (Taraji P.
Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) – who served as the
brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit in 1962.

Congratulations PTO on winning 3rd Place Chapter of the Year
for a Medium size chapter!!!

Thanks again to those Sorors who worked extremely hard on the award book submissions,
Soror Regenia Moore-Lee, Soror Carolyne Wright Hopkins, Soror Tammy
Williams, Soror Joyce Malliet, Soror Carol Lynn Patterson, and Soror Deborah
Winston.

Congratulations on the recognition of our outstanding ASCENDSM student, Ifeoma White-
Thorpe who was accepted to all 8 Ivy League Schools and announced her selection of Harvard
University at NARC before she advised any other news outlets. Congratulations on the
acknowledgement of PTO’s ASCENDSM program at the Public meeting and during the EAF
Breakfast.

We celebrated several milestones and accomplishments as noted below:
• Celebration of Golden Soror Diane Brown-Blair at the DGS luncheon.
• Celebration of Silver Soror Cherylann Dorsey at the DGS luncheon.
• Celebration of Silver Soror Georgie Ariano at the DGS luncheon.
• Soror Norma Jean Mackey who was recognized by the region as a Polished Pearl and
was celebrated at the Sister-To-Sister Crab Feast Luncheon.
• Celebration of Platinum EAF membership status at the EAF Breakfast; Platinum
parade and receipt of a Certificate of Recognition. Thank you Soror Angela White for
leading us in that effort.
• Celebrations and Congratulations to Soror Alyssa Manners for her completion and
graduation from the Nellie Quander Leadership Institute.
• Congratulations to Sorors Francine Medley, Soror Kisha Pippins-Fields and
Soror Sharon Williamson-Thomas who successfully completed Graduate Advisor Level
I Certification and Soror Aida Bush on Graduate Advisor Level II Certification.

From Calvary Baptist Church:

The Calvary Baptist Church Prison Ministry has continued its partnership with
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.-Pi Theta Omega Chapter to provide backpacks
filled with school supplies for children whose parents are incarcerated.

Through this joint effort, Calvary's Prison Ministry and Pi Theta Omega Chapter
donate, solicit, prepare, and distribute backpacks and school supplies to elementary
school children as a "joint labor of love," which also encompasses one of the Sorority's
International Program targets-Educational Enrichment through AKA One Million
Backpacks.

Following our chapter meeting, PTO Sorors gathered for a beautiful
holiday luncheon on December 17, 2017 at the Hanover Marriott in
Hanover, New Jersey. Hardworking Sorors were honored, delicious food
was served, and plenty of pictures were captured all while the holiday
cheer could be felt in the air. The angels that the GEMS designed were
placed on gifts and presented to the Calvary Baptist's Prison Ministry
Program.
