This issue celebrates Gertrude Schindler’s life &
welcomes some precious new babies & more

Dear Grandma,

What a difficult letter this is to write to you. I attempted to avoid writing this for as long as possible.
You see, I have felt like if I didn't recognize the fact that you're gone, you wouldn't be. If I didn't come
to Florida, I wouldn't see that you were no longer there. If I told myself it wasn't a good time to call
because you were napping I wouldn't have to face the fact the real reason you didn't pick up the phone.

Grandma, I can not explain how much it hurts that you aren't here anymore. It provides great comfort
knowing you lived such a blessed life. It absolutely amazed me how determined you were to live.
There are so many wonderful memories I have. Shucking corn, snapping green beans from your
garden, roller skating in your driveway, going to the bakery, sitting out on the beautiful patio enjoying
cold cut sandwiches. You always went out of your way to do wonderful and special things for
everyone.

I remember the time you came to visit us in
Arizona and I had asked you to bring some of my
favorite potato salad from the deli in Valley
Cottage. You packed it in ice and held it on your
lap for the entire flight like you were carrying the
most precious package. All for some potato salad.
The best potato salad ever!!!! but still, potato
salad. That's how you lived life. Whatever anyone
needed, you were there. You gave your time,
money, things, but most of all, you gave of
yourself. Completely unselfishly and generously.

I am so proud and thankful to say I knew you as a person, but even more so as my grandmother.

I love you, Grandma. May you rest in peace. Love, Katie Rose

Our Memories of Aunt Gertrude

From Stephanie Kisslinger Waxman, and Ellie and Steve Kisslinger

One of my earliest memories of Aunt Gertrude was of her cutting my hair at her home and beauty
parlor in Valley Cottage. I still have that first grade photo with my evenly cut bangs and I think
about her whenever I come across it. Although we didn’t get to visit with one another very often,
my memories of Uncle Joe, Aunt Gertrude, and Joe and Edmund coming to visit my family in
Lake Secor are very vivid and happy ones. I see Uncle Joe’s jolly face and Aunt Gertrude's ever
present sweet smile. Of course, having two fun-loving and active sons, she would have to put on a
stern face occasionally while reprimanding them for clowning around too roughly with Uncle
Steve – although Uncle Steve was almost always the perpetrator of this rough-housing. No sooner
had she scolded them to behave than she would return to her affable demeanor, chuckling under
her breath as she walked away.

My mother and father, Eleanor and Steve, have many loving memories of Gertrude. My father
remembers sitting under the grape arbor in Jamaica with Gertrude and Joan as a young boy,
eating the grapes and being close with his cousins. And there were also the pranks and teasing
that went along with the closeness they shared, which he still remembers and laughs about today.
Many of us have heard the stories.

My mother remembers how grateful she was for the help she received from both Gertrude and
Joan during the planning of her wedding. She said it meant so much to her to have their support
throughout - both emotionally and with specific preparations, much of which she was trying to do
on her own. My mother also reminisced about visiting Gertrude in the hospital when Edmund was
born. Gertrude, having just delivered, was more concerned about my mother who had travelled
with my father up from Jamaica, and who was also very pregnant. My mother replied to Gertrude,
“What better place to be but in a hospital?” Susan was born four days later. Gertrude was like
another sister to my father and both “friend” and family to my mother.

So sweet and
cherubic, with
her wonderful
smile – that is
how we will
remember
Aunt Gertrude.

MY SISTER GERTRUDE

My sister has always been there for me, even though I was her pesty little sister. As a
teenager I would always tag along when Gertrude and her dear friend Emily went down
to Jamaica Ave. During the war years there were many sailors from the Brooklyn Navy
Yard there and they always had many dates. My mother always invited them for Sunday
dinner. They all were very honorable young men.

Gertrude met Joe at a German American dance on 86th Street in New York City. He told
her he was going to Alaska to seek his fortune. It was love at first sight. She made up
her mind if he goes so will she. It did not materialize. They were married in 1947 and
moved upstate to Valley Cottage, New York. Gertrude was very lonely living in the
country, as she was a city girl. (can you imagine if she went to Alaska) Every Friday
night Joe would come home from work and drive her down to Jamaica. This went on
when Joe Jr. was born and finally when Edmund was born she got accustomed to country
life. Joe was the greatest! Do you know anyone else that would do that?

When my first husband John died Gertrude gave me money to go to beauty school and set
me up with a beauty shop in my mother’s basement, where I earned money for 17 years.

When Gertrude and Joe went on vacation for 2 weeks each summer they took me,
Andrea, Lisa and Laura. We went camping in many parks. Arcadia National Park, Great
Smokey Mt. National Park, Shenandoah National Park, Montauk Point and Cape Cod.

I went to Florida with my friends Kitty & Stan and stayed in a condo in Jensen Beach. It

was on the Ocean. I fell in love with the condo. The next year I persuaded my sister and

Joe to see this area of Florida. When I heard a condo was for sale I asked Gertrude and

Joe to go halves on it as I couldn’t afford it by myself. They were right there for me.

God has blessed me to have a wonderful sister. Thank you, Gertrude for being there for

me always. Love, Joanie

LOOK AT US NOW…

Life changes in a blink of an eye and you should never take anything for granted… we
learned those lessons quick in May of 2010 when our son Tyler was diagnosed with
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Also known as the most common childhood
cancer, lucky for us, the most curable!

Before Tyler was diagnosed Keith and I both had full time jobs, and Tyler and Hailey
attended daycare. I left my job to be home with Tyler to make his doctor appointments
and treatment schedule. Tyler and Hailey both were taken out of daycare; the
environment was not a “safe” one for Tyler to be in during his heavy treatment months.
We decided that Hailey would be taken out as well, not only because of financial reasons,
but she would be bringing daycare germs home with her.

We were very fortunate to have the love and support of so many family and friends. At
times things would be rough, but we had such a great support system, that it didn’t seem
all that bad. Our thoughtful brother & sister-in-law, Brad & Christine worked really hard
and pulled together a great team to assist in putting together a Silent Auction Fundraiser
on behalf of Tyler. Our parents, John & Donna, orchestrated a phenomenal Golf Outing
to help us during this time. We are forever grateful to everyone who participated,
contributed, or who just thinks about us during this time.

Because of these fundraisers were able to continue living in our home and pay the
hospital and medical bills. We also need to thank our brother and sister-in-law, Derek &
Melissa for ALWAYS being a reminder that positive thinking is the key! They always
have our back and we thank you for that.

During this whole time Tyler was a SUPER HERO in our eyes and many others around
him. Once he got the hang of taking his medicine at home, we were smooth sailing. He
rarely got sick from the medication, and he did not completely lose his hair until October
when he started the most intense round of chemo. He made the cutest bald Woody for
Halloween, and Hailey was his pretty sidekick Jessie.

In December, Tyler reached the maintenance phase of his treatment!!! This last phase
will last for 3 years. Tyler will take medication at home and go for monthly treatments.
Every three months he will go to the hospital for ambulatory surgery and have a lumbar
puncture (spinal tap) with intrathecal chemo. By January his hair was growing in and he
was given the ok to go back to school! We had a minor hurdle to get over with an eight
day stay at the hospital due to dehydration and a fever which his counts would not
recover from. Once he was discharged and given the clearance again, we enrolled Tyler
and Hailey into Sunset Nursery School. They loved it; we were so glad that Tyler was
able to get back into a routine with his peers. Hailey loves to sing and dance all the new
songs she learns. It was nice to watch them be kids again with other children.

In the spring Tyler was on the Cardinals T-Ball team. He loved every minute of it. Was
so inspiring to watch him play and hit the ball and run around like he should be. It still
amazes us how far he has come and how much strength and determination he has.

(continued after photo)

Tyler Kisslinger

Sometimes his stubbornness is a little
too much, but we know that has helped
him to be where he is.

I can’t believe that this is where we
are… September, Tyler will be going to
Kindergarten!!! Getting on that school
bus like a “big” kid. He will be playing
soccer this fall; we can’t wait to watch
him run up and down the field, hopefully
scoring a few goals. He has definitely
scored a few goals along the way of his
journey and recovery with the cancer.
He will continue to be stubborn and not
let the leukemia get the best of him.

There’s no keeping this boy down!
Hailey is so proud of her big brother; she
wants to do everything that he does. She
wants to play T-Ball, go on the
Kindergarten bus, and play soccer.
Because she is too young to start sports,
she willingly took on dance. She is so
cute with her little leotard and her tap
and ballet shoes. She enjoys her weekly
class.

We can’t thank you all enough for your
continued prayers and words of
encouragement. Much love to everyone!

From Stephanie Fortier

2011 has brought a lot of changes for me -

In March, I went of on my first cruise to the Bahamas with my "boyfriend" Dave.
It was the first cruise for both of us and a much needed vacation.
It was a cruise to Bahamas, Coca Cay and Key West. We had great weather,
ate delicious foods, met some nice people, and went parasailing (my favorite part).

A week later when we returned to Massachusetts, I found out that I was pregnant.
I was in shock and disbelief at first, for I had tried to conceive for over 12 years.
I had no symptoms of pregnancy and it wasn't until I had my first sonogram and
heard the baby heart beat that I knew it was for real! Besides from being tired,
experiencing heart burn and changing my diet, I feel wonderful and can't wait
to hold our baby girl in early November.

Dave proposed to me on June 15, and could not of made me a happier person.
I feel so blessed to have a loving man in my life and to be experiencing the
miracle of child birth. No wedding date yet - sometime in 2012.

I met Dave at
Intel where he
works as a
vendor for
Hitachi and have
known him
for a number of
years. Dave has
2 grown sons Tim
and William who
are truly two
great young men
who love and
respect their
father (whom he
raised himself).

Dave will be
relocating to
Malta, NY (near
Saratoga spring
and 2 hrs from
Mass.) and we
are in the
process of selling his home. I will transfer to upstate New York in early 2012 once
everything is taken care of in Massachusetts.

A lot of upcoming changes, blessings and miracles and a reminder of how great

life can be. Love to all, Stephanie

New Babies:

Brayden Maximilian Trach,
born on Feb. 7, 2011, will not only carry on the
Trach name but also the Maximilian name. His
parents are Eric & Monique, grandparents George
& Rosalie, and Great grandparents (deceased)
Maximilian and Maxmiliana Trach. We can’t
forget big sister Zoey. Note: some others with the
Maximilian middle name: George Jr & Sr, Eric.
Regina & Stephanie Kisslinger Waxman also have
the Maxmilianna name. Young Brayden - at 6
months old - is doing well. 27 inches and 17 lbs.
He loves to be held and always wants to stand and
jump! He will probably be an early walker. Here he is at birth with Dad Eric.

Macey Hope Kisslinger,
Paul, Jennifer and big sis Grace are so happy to let everyone know that they had a beautiful baby
girl on Aug 18, 2011. Macey Hope was born at 10:26 Thursday morning weighing in at 6 pounds
4 ounces and 18.5 inches long. Funny coincidence....Jennifer, Grace and Macey all weighed 6
pounds 4 ounces at birth!! Grandparents Joe & Nancy, and Great grandparents (deceased)
Ludwig and Anji Kisslinger

Baby Portia Ilinca McGee
Portia Ilinca McGee was born on May 24th in Atlanta, GA. She weighed exactly 7 lb and she was
21.5 inches long (which is exactly 50 cm--talk about perfect size.) Weston & I named her Portia
after our Shakespeare loving heart and because of the name's Latin roots and Ilinca (pronounced
[ee-lee-nka]) as it is a name found only in the Romanian language and it's a derivative from the
name Ilie or Ellie in English. She brought us so much joy--it is like we have been waiting for her
all our lives and then, when we saw her, we said...."hey, there you are, we have been waiting for
you" She is growing and developing beautifully and is full of energy--we cannot remember our
lives before her.

Stitching The Quilt

Update on our Kentucky Cousins,
We, Lasca Gail, Mom, Dad and I (Evelyn), are all doing very well. After 35 years in their
old Kentucky home my parents are finally downsizing . We are in the middle of a big
project as they are moving soon. We have been preparing for over a year. There was so
much to clear out. Uncle Bobby and cousin Wendy came for a visit last month and gave
us a lot of moral support. Uncle Bobby put us to work (just like Grandma Ilse used too!)
and we emptied the attic and barn. We have been working hard, praying and saying
many affirmations. Can you believe the house sold after only a month on the market!
What a BLESSING. They rented an apartment and are looking forward to winter in a
cozy place with No maintenance. Their new address is:

Stitching The Quilt

Update From Linda Donohue
Well, we have had some challenges this last year – financially & healthwise, but you
know what they say – whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. We are still very
much alive and kicking, and I dare say stronger, at least wiser. Lots of good things too…
Linda is still doing massage, Tai Chi, swimming, gardening, enjoying the grandchildren,
lifting weights, thinking about taking painting lessons (since I have enjoyed doing “paint
by numbers” with Allison), looking forward to biking in the fall and skiing in the winter.
Jim has a post-retirement job – driving a bus for “challenged kids” in a special school.
He is getting a real education – from the teenagers he drives to high school. I could give
you specifics, but they would be X-rated. Jim works out consistently at the YMCA and
at home – machines & weights. He has been a wonderful grandfather – teaching Allison
to ice skate, taking Danny golfing, bringing kids to the shore & other summer fun.
Craig and Danny took a nice trip together this summer to Cooperstown Baseball Hall of
Fame, Niagara Falls and then Toronto to see a Blue Jays game. Danny, age 14, enjoys
golf, sports, the Phillies and the Eagles, video games, and woodworking. He has made
some beautiful pieces including the table with a glass door and a rocking chair below.

Allison, age 9 almost 10, enjoys riding the waves in her boogie board, going on ever
more daring rides at the amusement parks, taking piano lessons, dance (taking jazz this

year), spending time with her girlfriends. She participated in Girls on the Run, a track
club that also focuses on self esteem and starting healthy habits to last a lifetime. The
culmination of the year is running a 5K with an adult. Jim was chosen to be the adult
and had just a couple of weeks to train. They did great!.

Allison behind Jim & just to the left Allison (left) and her BFFs
I just want to add this. The toughest part of the Tai Chi exercises and movements for me
is the balancing. When my arms are up in the air, I visualize my mother holding my
wrists and pulling me up. When my arms are down, I feel my father’s hands on my
shoulders pushing down to stabilize me. It helps. It really does. I say this so those of
you who have lost loved ones will know you can call on their spirits for help in your life.

Update on cousin Jai (Roger) Klarl
Jai had successful hip replacement – the surgeon said it looked “perfect”. He finished
with the physical therapy for about a month, and continues to do some exercises on his
own. He has moved to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, a place that’s long been dear to his
heart. The Pagosa Springs Parks Dept. has allowed him to construct a temporary
labyrinth ( a Creten 7-circuit labyrinth). After some more research he'll present a plan for
a permanent labyrinth.
Jason Klarl is working at Duke University on documentaries using his media education.

Aunt Gertrude – with Love Andrea

I have had only one aunt and My Strudel was the best Aunt in the whole world.

I remember visiting Uncle Joe and Aunt Gertrude when I was a little girl. I will
never forget the beauty shop she started on her own - very successfully…Gertrude’s
Beauty Shop…. She was in-charge and had five ladies working for her… She was
rich…she had 5 cash registers full of $20’s, $50’s & $100’s…wow! I loved opening
the cash draws to hear those bells ring.

Aunt Gertrude and Uncle Joe were always there for us. They took us on great
family vacations and helped us in whatever way they could.

I always wished I could have been her
daughter…but she was a little scary
when she hollered…and she didn’t let
you do all the things that my mother let
us do. She was definitely in-
charge…like my grandmother and my
mother…and me of course.

… we all loved her for her honesty,
stubbornness and gift of her love.

Memories of my Aunt Gertrude:

First: THE BIGGEST AND WARMEST SMILE followed by an all encompassing busty
hug! For me, as a kid, it translated to "I love you, welcome, come on in, what do you
want to eat? " (food/love, a great Kisslinger trait!)

Second: MY FIRST PERM! I'm not sure how old I was but I remember caring about
how my hair looked and boys. I was thrilled with the results. My Aunt Gertrude
performed a miracle and topped it off with one of those cute bows on a metal clip. I felt
great and she made me feel pretty and feminine.

We will miss her very much.

LOVE SUSAN & GLENN HAYWOOD

Memories of Aunt Gertrude
It was always fun going to visit my Godfather Uncle Joe and Aunt Gertrude. My
memories are always of a very happy lady with an infectious laugh. Funny story I
remember is that when I started out in the working world at the ripe old age of 18 I felt it
important to send my own birthday cards. As Uncle Joe was my godfather and I'd send
him cards I also included Aunt Gertrude in this tradition.
Well, as things go and I was no longer working and stayed at home with my baby Susie.
I guess the importance of birthday cards went by the wayside as I was busy being a
Mom. One afternoon Aunt Gertrude called me and asked if I was mad at her? I said no
of course not, why? Well, she said, I never received my birthday card this year! Once I
explained she was fine. I love that story. I never realized how important my sending
those cards were to her.
We will miss her and keep those loving memories of Gertrude with us for many years.

Young Love That Lasted

Going the Distance for Mary Ann

In January 2005, I lost Mary Ann, my cousin and someone
very close to me, to lymphoma. In 2007, I had the honor to
work among the patients, families, and clinicians working
to overcome lymphoma, leukemia, and other hematological
cancers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New
York. Now, in June of 2011, I will run a half-marathon
alongside my cousin Corinne MacLennan (a NYC police
officer and hero in her own right) as I run in memory of
Mary Ann and in honor of my Uncle Don (Corinne's dad).
San Diego -- here we come!

Remembering Mary Ann

Even as a kid, I was acutely aware of how lucky I was to have Mary Ann and her
husband Dan in my life. I can remember thinking that everyone should have a Mary Ann
-- someone to visit with, bake with, or play a game of Rummy 500 (lessons that still serve
me well today!) I spent a lot of time with my family at Mary Ann and Dan's home. These
times were holidays and birthdays, but more often then not, simply a Saturday where we
might drop by to say hello only to leave hours later, bellies full, and laughter shared.
Over the years, Mary Ann did so many special things for me and for my family. I think
fondly of the Strawberry Shortcake journal she gave to me, christened with a poem that
she wrote; the letters she sent to me while I was away at summer camp; and of the
beautiful navy blue blanket she crocheted to keep me warm while I headed to Boston for
school. It's the same quilt that warms my bed today.

In December 2004, Mary Ann was diagnosed with lymphoma and she lost her battle with
this very aggressive disease just weeks later. I, along with all of Mary Ann's family and
friends, was left feeling a tremendous void in my life.

Inspired to Run

While I have experienced the heartache associated with lymphoma, I have also seen the
hope. I have worked elbow-to-elbow with some of the finest doctors and nurses, and I
have been inspired by patients and families as they manage treatment and overcome
disease.

Participation in Team In Training supports the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society, an organization is so meaningful to the patients and their families.

With love, Jessica Klarl (taken from her website
