Jamie is starting to plant his wonderful garden, so this summer we should have our usual wall
of dahlias. He has even planted a garden for a friend of ours. This garden is admired by all of
our neighbors. ..in fact one year an artist set up an easel on the sidewalk and painted it.

We keep our family and friends in our thoughts and prayers and are so happy to have the
Family Quilt as a way to keep connected.
Love to you all,

Betty Capurso

What a Fun Surprise, for Anita!
Lillian & Ed Kelly threw me a surprise birthday party on April 10th for my 85th birthday.
Attending were Joan &. Frank Ecker, Nancy & Joe Kisslinger, Laura Paul & Christy
Schneyman, Kevin, Julie & Nicholas Kelly, Maria & Bob Checco, Andrea Kern & George
MondeII, Mary Nicholas, Gertrude Schindler & me. I received movie tickets to the
Danbury theatre from Kevin &Julie, a birthday cake from Joan & Frank, shorts & top
from Gertrude and a purse from Nancy &Joe.
Joe and Nancy also gave Gertrude, Lillian and Joan similar purses in different colors for
their birthdays that passed or were coming up.
I had a great time. Thanks so much to the Kellys and everyone.
Also I want to say how lucky I am to have a big and close family of cousins. I came
down to Florida planning to stay for a week or two and it is already over 2 months and
I'm still here due to medical problems.

Love, Anita

FAIRY DREAMS

By Chelsea Gerleit

Whirling,
Twirling,
Colors swirling,
Into the fairy World I go.
Music,
Dance,
Laughter and Glee,
Secrets of the Earth they share with me.
My cheek is kissed with fairy mist.
Pixie dust in the air,
The smell of flowers everywhere.
I love this place,
It is so cool.
Oh no, WAKE UP!
It's time for school.
With this entry, Chelsea won the all-school poetry contest.
Congratulations Chelsea — Great Job!

DECISIONS. . . DECISIONS. . . DECISIONS

by Sophie A. Welisch

Philisophy, psychology, theology or art?
Which of these subjects should you take
if you don't think you're smart?
All I need is one more course,
in what it does not matter
as long as I can leave by one
when all the students scatter.
I note that literature is taught
at a time most convenient.
But since I do not like to read,
the grading won't be lenient.
And history with its concerns
is deeply diplomatic.
If I can grasp its finer points
is highly problematic.
Now French and Spanish head the list
of courses that bode trouble:
With conjugations, syntaxes,
translations on the double.
The sciences and math are fields
I truly cannot fathom.
Why must I study theorems
or the splitting of the atom?
Then there's the course in government
with its attendant theories,
although I've yet to see
some good solutions to its queries.
For which course then should I enroll
at this next registration?
I'll see what my friend Joe decides,
since he's my transportation.

an inventor - Andre Clejan, age 9 on 4/12.
a doctor or a princess - Allison Farber, age 3 on 11/27

Thank you to everyone who helped me in my school project - collecting postcards
from the states in the US. I appreciate your help. We got a lot from all over, but
for the longest time we didn't have any from our own state of New Jersey.

Also, thank you for all the fun cards, gifts and treats after my surgery. I am feeling
very good.

Thank you all.

A great day for our family!

Pope John Paul II

We thank God for Pope John Paul II and mourn his passing.

- an Extraordinary Spiritual Leader who knew when to be Strong and
when to be Gentle
- a man of Love - who put his Love into Action
- a man of Peace - who believed in Confronting Evil

May his memory inspire us on our own Spiritual Paths.

Our History / Our Heritage

On March 1st in Romania (mostly in Bucovina – the province the Kissslingers came from), the
girls pin lucky charms called "martisoare" on the men's chests. The name comes from the name
of the month, March. Later, on March the 8th, which is the International Day of Women, the men
give women presents, usually flowers and chocolate. It is a custom that has been around for
ages. The Bulgarians have it too. This is how a 1st of March card looks. The "martisor" is in the
bottom right corner with its white and red twisted string. The message on the card is "a bunch of
spring flowers for you".

I would like to talk to you about Sebastian. His real name was Iosif Hechter, and he was a

Jewish writer in prewar Bucharest—a novelist, playwright, poet, and journalist who counted

among his friends the leading intellectuals and social luminaries of sophisticated Eastern

European culture. I found his journals (Journal 1935-1944) in a dorm room a few years ago, and

out of curiosity I started reading them. I feel in love immediately! I managed to read all his work

as he didn't get to write much, dying in 1945 when he was 38 years old. At that time Bucharest

was referred to as "little Paris", it was filled with life and personality, having a great cultural life,

and being also a modern city (the electric light had been introduced in 1899.) He wrote in his

journals about his daily life in the city, his readings, his love affairs, vacations, and the musical

performances he adored.

His books are very dear to me, and I read them again (in English) with the same

enthusiasm as the first time. I think his mission was accomplished: that is "The only kind of

eternity that matters: to be more alive than a living person, and for the memory of you to be just

as real as a physical presence."

I'd like to end my article here thanking the family for all the help during my time spent in

the United States. I couldn't have done without you. Veronica Chiorescu

Chicken Soup for Our Souls

When Conflict Happens

If your relationship is experiencing difficulty, the other person may be willing to join you in
prayer. Even if he or she is not, prayer is still the answer. If one person invites God's spirit into
a situation, then His spirit enters.

From Illuminata: Thoughts, Prayers, Rites of Passage by Marianne Williamson

Forgiveness

The vision of God's spirit is the vision of innocence. It is not our job to forgive whom God has
not condemned, but rather to remember that God condemns no one.

God heals though forgiveness and asks that we do likewise. Attack is an easier response than
forgiveness, and that is why we are so tempted to give into it. Throughout our lives, we have
seen more anger than examples of true forgiveness. Forgiveness does not mean we suppress our
anger; forgiveness means we have asked for a miracle: the ability to see through the mistakes
that someone has made to the truth that lies in all of our hearts. None of this "I'm too spiritual to
be angry," for who among us is? Rather we pray "I am angry, dear God, but I am wiling not to
be. I am willing to see the situation another way."

Forgiveness is not always easier. At times, it seems more painful than the wound we suffered, to
forgive the one who inflicted it.

And yet there is no peace without forgiveness. Attack thoughts toward others are attacks on
ourselves. The first step in forgiveness is the willingness to forgive. If you can state, despite
your resistance, your willingness to see your spiritual innocence, the light in the soul of one who
has harmed you, you have begun the journey to a deep, unshakable peace.

Thoughts of Mary Ann

In Celebration of the life of Mary Ann Karl Schatzle

Mary Ann was a very, very special Cady.
One of the great ones. One of the Greatest in our family.

She -was loving to all- Caring, Thoughtfu6 Seffsacrificing...

alfwantedmore time with her - more time for her Cove and her other gifts.

Some things that stand" outin my mind- are her enthusiasm andylayfulness.
For example, she got such a kick out of dressing up for work Cast 3-faCCoween
(as her idol-Willie Nelson). She enjoyed writing it up in the Family Quilt
Newsletter as apuzzCe to be solved - using the words such as what other
nutcase would do this at my age. She was such a wonderful- "nutcase".

She hada great sense of humor. I Coved how she toCd a story- long, but capturing
your attention all the way - and Funny! The story itself maynot even have
been that funny - it was all in the telling. She would have me laughing and she
-would be laughing too - her own unique laugh - complete with Snorting! As a
fellow snorter I understand yes, I admit I do it, too (perhaps to a lesser extent)
and-when I do I always say - "That means I am having a really good timer

And]. think Mary Ann (though she had some difficult har&hips to endure)
did also have a really good time!

She enjoyed her Children, Husband, Brother,Granddaughter.
And her Cousins! Her cousins on both skies were s0000 important to her.
And her friends, neighbors, co-workers, and the members of her church.

Other things that certainly standout are her gifts. 3-fer handmade gifts of
delicious cookies, baked goods and those spectacular quilts. She put a Cot of
Cove into each gift.

The name of the family newsletter I startedin my mother's memory, "The
Family Quilt", came from my cousin Michael who said 'When he thinks of
Family, he thinks of a fine quilt woven together with love by my mother (Dora).
Wel( the same can certainly be saidfor Mary Ann. She didjust that - wove us
together with Cove. Remembering all-the important occasions, Gathering family
andfriends, _Making everyone feel important.

30

She was also an ardent contributor to the family newsletter, which I am
particularly gratefulfor - representing both Xissfingers and Xfarls.

3-ier photography was another of her gifts. She lcrved the actually taking of the
photos - especially at large affairs - it gave her an opportunity to have little
one-on-one visits with each person. And she delighted in sending copies of the
photos after. She has left some wondetfulmemories.

She -made a difference! She shirted a loving light on this work( and we are all
better for it.

She will be welcomedwith open arms by her parents, and-mine, and all the
others who have gone before us. She is truly in a place of Peace and Cove.

God- Bless Dan, Nlary Beth, Stephanie, Jai (Roger) and the rest of itiary Ann's
wondoful circle of family andfrienA Nlay we keep Ivlary Ann's Cove alive in our
hearts, and alive in our rekitionships with each other.

MaryAnn
My Dear Cousin and Maid of Honor.

She was the hostess with the mostess!

I loved going over to visit - not only to see her and Danny, but to enjoy the
wonderful surprise of the meal she had prepared for us. It didn't make a
difference if it was breakfast, lunch or dinner, it was all wonderful!

I remember talking with her on the phone about 2-3 weeks before she went to
see Aunt Hilda and Uncle Joe and all our other beloved family. She was telling
me what happened to her at work and then the diagnosis. My heart fell at
that time and still today I cannot believe she is gone.

I miss her every day.

My Cousin Maryanne
Written with great love for my cousin

By Andrea Kern

Maryanne was always a joy to be in her company. Laughing was one of her greatest assets. She
loved to belly laugh and have fun. That is what we always did together whenever we saw each
another.

Aunt Hilda visited my grandmother and spent time alone with, Aunt Rose, in Jamaica. She often
came down to unload, eat my grandmothers cooking and to rejuvenate herself with her older
sister.

As a child, I used to call my Aunt and Uncles' monthly visits to my grandmother's house by a
special. I called it the Anchie's & the Louie's & the Hilda's and the Joe's. The menu was
planned to please... Roast duck, sauerbraten, canadles, potato pancakes... I used to set the table
and anxiously await their arrival. In retrospect, I probably was waiting for the brownies, cakes,
éclairs and rolls they always brought from the Modern bakery.

Maryanne continued the tradition by visiting my mother, Joanie & Rose, in Jamaica. Marybeth &
Stephanie always came along and stayed for the weekend.. Maryanne would bring her famous
freshly baked linzer tarts, cheesecake, and specialties. She baked for the entire week.

Jamaica was always a happening place growing up and Maryanne and the girls loved to visit us.
Commotion was the stage. The phone was ringing off the wall, neighbors, friends, and several
sets of our boyfriends kept rotating in and out of the house. Joanie was always catering to
everyone's needs and problems. Food, card games, laughter, and teasing were the order of the
day.

Our house was a world wind of energy. Maryanne loved the Action. The antics of "Sir
Francis"---"Pass the butter" Joan..."I need salt" Joan. Frank never failed to send Maryanne in
hysteria to the bathroom because also loved to tease him.

Maryanne loved the saga of Lisa stories that she witnessed in Jamaica. Lisa loved repeating bad
habits ...especially in the kitchen....like spilling entire gallons of grape juice on the kitchen floor
after Joanie washed and polished the floors. Opening jars of duck sauce and splattering everyone
including the walls and kitchen ceiling, while we were enjoying Chicken chow main.

However, there is one story that Maryanne loved. Here's how it goes. Lisa was taking her
usually long one-hour shower. She forgot to put the shower curtain in the tub. For 45 minutes,
the water was pouring down the kitchen ceiling and Joanie walked in and started screaming at
Lisa to shut the water off. Lisa, used to having done this on several occasions, jumped out of the
tub, mopped up the floor with the new Turkish white towels, and placed them in the laundry

32.

basket. Well my mother came up to check and all hell broke out for the second time. Maryanne
sent the girls next door to my grandmother's house and told them to go to bed at 5pm.
Maryanne was truly the best. I cannot believe that she is gone. I loved her so much and will
always treasure the fun times we had together... She loved life to the fullest and she was so
lucky and blessed to have Danny in her life and so proud of her daughters Marybeth &
Stephanie.
When the pope died, I thought of Maryanne. I bet you she is laughing and making linzer tarts for
him.

MY DEAR COUSIN MARY ANN

In 1940 my cousin Mary Ann was born. Everyone was thrilled Aunt Hilda, the baby of the
Kisslinger family had a baby.
I remember so well her Christening on 168th Street in the Bronx. We were all there celebrating.
In Lake Secor, Baba took charge and wheeled her down to the Beach every day in the summer to
let Aunt Hilda Sleep. She was so adorable. Lillian, Doris, Georgie and I loved her.
As the years went by we were all together in Jamaica for all the holidays.
When my mother died Mary Ann and I took over the holiday baking. Every Christmas she came
down two weeks before Christmas and spent the weekend with me. We baked Tradewables,
Kippfels and Linsa Tarts. One year, Gertrude, Barbara, Andrea, Lisa, Laura, Marybeth and
Stephanie came to help with the baking. What a fiasco. Everyone wanted to get into the act.
Mary Ann's cookies had to be perfect, but you can imagine when we had all that help. After that
Mary Ann and I made a pack that we kept our backing weekend a secret.
Mary Ann we all miss you, but we all know you are in a better place.

Joanie

MOTHER

I am proud and thankful that you are the woman who raised me.
I'll never forget the love you have shown me

or your constant support and encouragement you have given me.
You were someone who encouraged my dreams,
applauded my accomplishments
and understood my mistakes.

You have always been proud of your girls, and we were proud of you.
You always believed in me,

and that has always helped me through so many difficult times.
We are together even when we are apart for you are forever in my heart.

Rove you for being a caring person,
A remarkable woman,

And an exceptional mother.
The unconditional forever-kind love that you have given will live within me.

May you now rest in peace and never suffer again.

We ALL love you.

Stephanie

Sent especially for Stephanie & 314ary Beth from Xaren Arcuri:
Our Mothers are often the first ones who connect us with. God
Ands°, when they go ahead of us to an eternal home,
It is like letting go of apart of our own spiritual-selves.
But just as your mother connected you to God in the beginning,
3-fis 3-foly Spirit connects you with her forever.
Let your heart be comfortedwith the confidence that

she waits for you in God's radiant, loving presence.
