Welcome to Porto!

If you’ve recently moved to Porto or you’re a traveller and
are visiting the city, this is the right guide for you. We help
you looking and exploring the city, as it is growing and
changing fast and there’s always a lot to catch up on!
Here you’ll find what’s new and trendy, but also what’s iconic
and worth to know, or revisit, whether it would be restaurants
and bars, coffee or pastry shops, parks, monuments, hotels
a nd mo re . Ta k e t h is a n n u a l e dition a s a n in spir a tiona l g ui de
for your visit to Porto. As many other great suggestions
could have been featured here, it would be necessary to
have a 1000 pages guide for us to let you know what’s up
and what’s great in the Invicta, as the city is best known
for. Words won’t be enough, so we’d rather prefer to show
you great pictures of the many places, among thousands
of others, where you can go, and experience and taste this
wonderful city in the North of Portugal.

IN LOVE WITH THE CITY

A handful of good restaurants, boutique hotels at every cor ner, a
remarkable cultural and artistic dynamic in step with its history and
architectural heritage, make Porto a city that amazes us more and

more with each visit.

Walking through the streets and lanes and
letting yourself go with the dynamic that
Porto offers, enjoying its enchantments,
architecture, and History; its artistic and cultural
aspects; its landscapes, beautiful avenues and
19th century houses – all this served on an enor-
mous platter by people with full hearts is always a
good reason to go and come back.
Invicta, the “invincible city,” name given by Queen
D. Maria II, “the most illustrious of the Portuguese
cities,” does not sleep. Its streets fill with people
(pass by the Rua da Galeria de Paris and be as-
tounded by the sea of people and excitement).
The cafes, bookstores, and other historic and
iconic buildings compete with other contempo-
rary buildings without hindrance, giving room to
choose a little bit of everything, without risking
having nothing to do.
The sea and the river are a point of contempla-
tion and attraction for everyone who appreciates
community and nature, and can be viewed from
an esplanade. And what a view! The beaches of
Foz and their infrastructure do not leave margin for
error: Porto is a city with everything to make us feel
at home. And to fill our soul on the return home.
Drinking and eating are by far two attributes
that we associate with the city. The list does not fit
in these pages, but there are some examples that
leave your mouth watering.

DROOP

LEITARIA DA QUINTA DO PAÇO

MUNDO There are the éclairs from Leitaria da Quinta
do Passo, open since 1920, where chantilly was
bought back in the day (Pr. Guilherme Gomes Fer-
nandes, 47/51). There are the unmissable crois-
sants from Padaria Ribeiro (Phone: 229 774
010), with their brioches and sugar glaze. There
are the francesinhas from Brasão (now open in
the Coliseu), Afonso (which Anthony Bourdain
tasted), Café Santiago, Bufete Base (awarded).
There are Inês’s octopus fillets with rice, in Cam-
panhã. There is so much to fill the eyes and belly.
From our notes of suggestions and comments, we
mean it when we say a handful.
Droop, a “food & wine” concept, right in down-
town Porto, gives us a chance to taste a com-
bination of appetizers and tapas. Featuring the
Beef Wellington accompanied with a good wine
from Douro Vallado (R. Elísio de Melo, 29/30 Por-
to; Phone: 222 033 113). Casa de Pasto da
Palmeira, in Foz do Douro, has an esplanade fac-
ing the river and delicacies inspired by traditional
Portuguese cuisine. For lunch? We suggest “the
usual,” as written on the menu, (alheira de caça
(traditional game sausage) pastries), and “the
new” (goat cheese pancakes). Located at R. do
Passeio Alegre, 450, Phone: 226 168 244.

Oficina combines art with gastronomy and is
located in an old classic car autoshop, property
of the gallerist Fernando Santos. The “foie-gras
egg filled with candied fig and pistachio sand,”
the “steamed sea bass taco seasoned with Hart’s
pennyroyal and lemon risotto,” or the “Rabanada
with caramel ice cream and Port wine reduction
sauce” are some of the menu’s rich and creative
attractions (R. Miguel Bombarda, nº273-282,

frames of women from each continent reflect the
cosmopolitan concept and trendy atmosphere

fers here an opportunity to taste the world’s best.
The space is located in Palácio das Artes-Fábri-
ca de Talentos, a building classified by UNESCO
as World Heritage site (Palácio das Artes, Lar-
go de S. Domingos, 18, Phone: 222 014 313).
Casa de Chá’s location stands out, erected
among rocks, only 20 minutes from Porto, in Leça,
National Monument since 2011 and one of the
most famous works by the architect Álvaro Siza
Vieira. Visits to the house are scheduled in ad-
vance through Casa da Arquitetura (visitas@casa-
daarquitectura.pt). It is located at Av. da Liberdade,
near the lighthouse, in Leça da Palmeira; Phone:
229 940 066.
Proceeding along with the gastronomic tour, one
always goes to take a peek at Sofia’s space, which
opened after the blog Chá das Cinco decided
to transition from the virtual world to reality. This
space smells of cakes, cookies, and steamy tea
and coffee (at Pr. da Alegria, 63; Phone: 916 419

Christian Haas, which suggests the combination
of a “delicatessen” and a furniture and accessories
store. It is located at R. do Almada no 501; Phone:

For those who like an experience centered more
closely on culinary operations, we suggest Eus-
kalduna Studio, a combined laboratory space
with a living room. It is even recommended for

the beautiful Flow, a complete experience of un-
forgettable aromas and flavors in a magnificent
building (R. da Conceição 63); Tripeiro (tripe and
much more!), now renovated but always a “must-
go” (R. Passos Manuel 195; Phone: 222 038 075);
and, of course, and always, DeCastroGaia, lo-
cated on the floor below the lively Terrace Lounge

one watches the best sunsets and tastes signa-

The interior design of Páteo das Flores, a part
of Flores Village Hotel & Spa, is signed by the de-
signer Pedro Mourão, the broad patio with a glass
ceiling through which natural light spills onto the
10 meter graffiti by the duo Thirds & Mots. A score
of ten goes to the national wine menu. Rua das
Flores, 135; Phone: 222 031 128.
We do not stay at the door like old times because
no one goes to the old Twins19.74 just to dance
anymore! They now serve meals (try the lunch
menu). It is located at Rua do Passeio Alegre,
1000. For a meal with a view, we suggest Am-
mar, with its creative presentation of dishes and
palates (pg. 24); Bocca, with its Italian-inspired
kitchen and excellent location (pg. 25); the indis-
pensable Praia da Luz, the best view of the Atlan-
tic (pg. 36); Pisca, so good on sunny days! (pg.
35), Oporto Café, a magnificent view of Foz do
Douro and fresh decoration (pg. 32). If you priori-
tize healthy food, we suggest Noshi Coffee (pg.
28), a garden planted in Downtown Porto with light
and savory options. For your tour, Pedro Limão is
guaranteed creativity on the table (pg. 34); Traça
is a family project located right in the historic cen-
ter – and a temptation (pg. 41); Reitoria has some
“focaccias” that once you eat, you’ll beg for more
(pg. 38); Letraria, with its hidden garden, is the
“spot” for beer lovers (pg. 30); and Clássico (pg.
31), homemade food with many fans. For the per-
fect dessert, we finish off at Gelataria Sincelo,
the oldest (pg. 27) of the city. l

There’s also the magnificent Casa da Música

several cultural activities take place, particular
those related to the field of music. The building

CLÉRIGOS

We still have the dazzling neoclassical building of
Palácio da Bolsa, one of the most visited mon-
uments in the North of Portugal, attracting several
hundreds of thousands of visitors every year – at
least. You can have lunch in the restaurant, with
views of Vila Nova de Gaia and Caves do Vinho do
Porto (Phone: 223 399 000). Torre dos Clérigos
is another required stop. Do not miss the daily or-
gan concerts at the Church (unique event in the
country). Or, if vertigo is not a problem, schedule a
late visit. Between 7 pm and 11 pm, Torre is open
to the public to watch the sunset and illumination
of the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia (www.
torredosclerigos.pt).
Another suggested attraction, for those who like
great heights, is the crossing at Gaia’s Cable Car,
with a number of attractions, among them, the trip
to the historic Caves do Vinho do Porto (www.ga-
iacablecar.com).
With the feet firmly set on the ground, it is time for
color and excitement, which you will find in Mer-
cado do Bolhão, located in a 19th century build-
ing and described as the second most emblematic
of the city (R. Formosa).
On a different tune, Casa da Arquitectura, Cen-
