(Avenida Menéres, nº 456, Matosinhos; Phone:

in Matosinhos’ Market, offers a kiosk full of good
independent magazines, a gallery dedicated to
documentary photography, and a drip coffee
stand. Located at R. França Junior, 1, Matosinhos;
Phone: 22 324 2142.
For art lovers, Galeria Fernando Santos makes
up this artistically and culturally dynamic Porto, fig-
uring today as one of the most important “brands”
of the sector to operate in Portugal and in the
world (R. Miguel Bombarda, nº526; Phone: 226

A quick trip through the beer and wine temples
is a must, and we put our money on the Super
Bock Group Casa da Cerveja (Unicer), where
one watches, live and in color, the beer’s fabri-
cation process in a sophisticated, modern envi-
ronment. We draw attention to the nearly 96,000

Throughout, we wander the streets, approach the
observation points (visit the point at Pérgola da
Foz, between Praia da Luz and the gardens of
Avenida de Montevideu, along the coast, with its
columns projecting shades that chase each other
on the ground when the evening falls…), the “Ri-

contemporary ceramics, a beautiful re-creation of

“HALF RABBIT”, ARTUR BORDALO the atmosphere of the Ribeira zone; or, for urban
art lovers, “Half Rabbit” by the artist Artur Borda-
56 Porto IN lo, a.k.a., Bordalo II, in Vila Nova de Gaia, made for
the Festival Gaia Todo o Mundo, and who had his
first significant solo exhibition in Lisbon (in Beato).
Hop over to Rua da Restauração, and see how
this artery was reinvigorated with the Mural Cole-
tivo da Restauração, where the works of six dif-
ferent artists, available only for a year, and within
Porto’s Urban Art Program, revamped a wall in an
art gallery style.

If there’s time, and if you’re at a different speed,
Porto has kilometers to spare of good sidewalks
or lawns for taking a walk, running, or skating.
Try it on Avenida Brasil, which coasts along the
ocean; at Marginal de Matosinhos; or in Parque da
Cidade. Tie up your shoes and visit the gardens of
Palácio de Cristal, with its short, very pretty lanes,
or dare to march slowly through more than 12 km
from Freixo to Castelo do Queijo.
With the family or alone, with friends or in the
company of your surfboard, Porto is still very well-
equipped in sports activities capable of satisfying
the needs of any traveling sports aficionado. The
Fish Surf School (Matosinhos) welcomes every-
one who travels with a surfboard and wants to
continue learning with open arms. Phone: 916 082

GLAMOUR´ARTE

Afterward, as everyone knows, there is just
one other attraction that takes us out of the
house, or the hotel, without too much fuss.
A trip downtown, to take a look at the shop win-
dows, get to know what is new and different since
the last visit, and tug on the purse strings. As for
shopping, all the stores win with their neat interiors
and alternative proposals.
Luís Buchinho, an unavoidable name in Porto,
moved Downtown and is currently located in a
renovated building, on Rua Sá da Bandeira, where
the large shop windows allow to see what’s going
on inside. Generous interiors in area and natural
light, combined with 1970s architecture, make this
new store a required destination, most of all for
fashion addicts. Phone: 222 012 776.
Scar-id is a store/gallery, located in an old 1950s
grocery store, at a crossing of Bairro Miguel Bom-
barda, known for the Porto Art District. Names
such as Carla Pontes, Susana Bettencourt, or Lia
Gonçalves found a platform here for their growth.
Located at R. do Rosário, 253;
Phone: 914 877 818.
Flagship Claus Porto, open in June 2017, coin-
cidentally the brand’s 130th anniversary, is located
in an original 19th century building, on Rua das
Flores, and has three floors of nearly 300 m2 that
exhibit the brand’s history and identity, a traditional
barbershop, and a multi-functional space with a
view of Sé, where visitors can find out the secrets
behind the Claus Porto soaps and perfumes in
the workshops “Mini Fábrica de Sabonetes” (Mini
Soap Factory) and “Laboratório de Aromas” (Lab-
oratory of Aromas). (Phone: 914290359).

For the home, office, or whatever area, you can
certainly find it at Vintage Department, on Rua
Ferreira Borges, if budget is not a limit. Pieces by
important designers like Christian Lacroix, Sig-
urd Ressel, Matthew Williamson, Arne Jacob-
son, Charles and Ray Eames, Martin Visser, just
to mention a few, in addition to national names,
like Sandra Baía, all test our determination. Every-
thing is fine and beautiful. (Phone: 918 888 854).
We move along to another vibe, Glamour’arte,
a project by the couple Sheila and Mário, lovers
of good design. Here you can find it, for sure! A
collection of over 5,000 products that can occu-
py any space in the home from the kitchen to the
terrace.
(Located at Av. Menéres 691, Matosinhos; Phone:
229 388 240).
Perfumed, an alternative to common, conventional
perfumeries, Alrac is the right suggestion on the
list of stores and commercial spaces. It is – dare
we say it – a paradise for lovers of unique fragranc-
es, gathering a collection of qualities and aromas
crafted according to the most elevated standards
of traditional perfumery. For the most part, one will
find many small producers and hear the many sto-
ries they have to tell.
(R. Pedro Homem de Mello, nº389, Phone: 22 617
8036). Still lost in the aromas, the new store Cas-
telbel,
in Palácio das Artes (pg. 72) deserves many visits,
not only to get to know the vast range of products,
but also the space. The demonstration space of
traditional techniques for manually packaging
soaps is on the ground floor. The first floor is ded-
icated to personalizing the soap packages and
transcribing phrases typed into a computer.
Proceeding onto what is best done in Portugal, we
propose a visit to Alma Lusa (pg. 64), tradition
and innovation, and articles that we always want

62 Porto IN

to take home, and to the store of the marvelous CLAUS
project Burel – Mountain Originals (pg. 65).
Armazém (pg. 66) offers a handful of articles, from Porto IN 63
fashion to decoration, in a vintage atmosphere;
Bat Eye (pg. 68) provides upscale furniture. For
those who need advice and personalized service
in interior decoration, Casa Comigo, of the dec-
orator Jorge Cássio (pg. 70), provides a number
of interior architecture services, as well as Ding
Dong (pg. 74) and Empatias (76), which offer a
rigorous selection of interior brands and projects
by the hand of Isabel Santos . Along with these
stores/studios thought out for very stylish homes,
we propose to pass through Gandia Blasco (pg.
78), a must-go, and even a stop by Loft APM (pg.
83), specialized in interior design.
Lovers of antiques and historic pieces can find that
piece of furniture or special object at João Moura
Martins (pg. 82), antiques, a required visit; at R&B
(pg. 86), a successful family project; and at Raul
Sousa (pg. 88), top-of-the-line antiques! Offering
something different, Hats&Cats (pg. 73) propos-
es a plethora of hats, because there are many,
and Loja das Tábuas (pg. 84), cutting boards,
wooden boxes, mortars, dishes, and cups. As for
the very urban Rhino Home (pg. 90), it offers a
world of house accessories; Mercado 48 (pg. 92),
a “concept store,” counts on good design; The
Yellow Store (pg. 93) provides lighting solutions;
Trendy Pillows (pg. 94) is a Portuguese brand
that bets on textures, color, and design; and Xl
Living (pg. 95) is Alexandra Monteiro’s most re-
cent project, with some brands from northern Eu-
rope, for eclectic environments. l

Visitors to Porto can expect a lot of choices when
it comes to places to spend the night, being a short
visit or a long stay. The city is full of choices, from the
historical and big hotels to the boutique ones or the
small charming guest houses. From all the different

kind of accommodations, pick one from our list.

PESTANA

Hotel options in Porto and surrounding areas
are vast, attractive and recommendable. In
the historic heart of the city, we start with
the quaint 1872 River House, a small and very
receptive hotel, with a frontal view of the Douro
Eiver, located in the heart of Invicta (pg. 104).
Moving on to Flores Village Hotel & Spa, with
only 35 rooms, a family concept, located in an
18th century historic building, which inspires many
days of rest and moments of relaxation in its indoor
pool (we recommend the Roman bath); Rua das
Flores, 139, Porto; Phone: 222 013 478. Hotel
Vintage Pestana is located in Ribeira’s historic
zone, basking in the stunning frame of the scenery.
Constructed from a set of 18 buildings considered
by UNESCA to be a Heritage of Humanity site, it
makes up all the city’s post cards, often mistaken
for other historic buildings in the area. The atmo-
sphere is vintage and contemporary, luxurious and
romantic. The restaurant Rib Beef & Wine is the
chosen spot for real connoisseurs of meat and
good wine. The rooms make the most of the lo-
cation, with its windowpanes and balconies facing
the scenery. Aside from the view and service, the
quality of the beds and linens stand out, because
nothing is left to cause. Praça da Ribeira, nº1, Por-
to; Phone: 223 402 300. Just as well-located, Oh
Porto offers six apartments along the banks of the
Douro River and is incorporated into the zone clas-

98 Porto IN

PORTO SENSE sified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Locat-
ed at Calçada da Serra, 85, in Vila Nova de Gaia;
Phone: 223 216 329. With a similar vibe, Feel
Porto (pg. 108) offers luxurious accommodation
in contemporary apartments, and Noshi Studios
(pg. 110) proposes a stay in a bare, modern en-
vironment, only a 2-minute walk from the famous
“Galerias de Paris.” Serious accommodation is still
led by the group Porto Sense (pg. 123), which
proposes a range of rooms on Rua do Almada,
Ribeira, in the heart of Porto, and along the Douro
River.
Proceeding with accommodation recommenda-
tions with breathtaking views, we suggest Vincci
Porto, in Massarelos, sprawled along the margins
of the Douro is the building popularly called the
Bolsa do Pescado, which brings back the 1930s.
This four-star hotel maintains the original building’s
structure practically intact, with a façade decorat-
ed with low reliefs that recall the lives of the city’s
local fishermen. Located at Alameda Basílio, 29;

OH PORTO

From Coleção Torel Boutiques, Torel Avantgarde
was born in 2017 and already figures as an in-
novative hotel proposal, with art as its badge of
honor. Forty-seven rooms face the Douro River, a
restaurant with Casa da Comida’s signature, and
a Spa inspired by nature’s best. The interior design
project has Isabel Sá Nogueira’s signature, who
was in charge of the common areas, combining art
and modern design with some provocative details.
Among the pieces that stand out are the painting
by Daniel Eime in reception and the paintings by
Jorge Curval in the rooms and main stairway, in
addition to his iron pieces at the façade and outer
area of the Hotel.
Other features include the lake that decorates part
of the Hotel’s gardens, the pool, the terraces cov-
ered in green, and, to top it off, the relaxing option
of Spa Balsamea with its vast list of treatments,
massages, and other services, as well as the gym
and Turkish bath. The restaurant bears the name
Digby, previously mentioned here. Located at Rua
da Restauraçāo, 336; Phone: 220 110 082.
