Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Alhamdulillah, terlebih dahulu ucapan penghargaan kepada
pihak Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi (KPT) yang telah
menganjurkan Festival of Ideas (FOI) pada tahun 2022. FOI
merupakan platform yang disediakan KPT untuk memberi
peluang kepada universiti awam (UA) mempamerkan hasil
penyelidikan dan inovasi yang dihasilkan oleh penyelidik
dari UA masing-masing.
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) menerusi Pusat
Pengurusan Inovasi dan Pengkomersialan (PPIP)
sentiasa memberikan kerjasama yang baik dengan
menyertai program yang dianjurkan KPT. UMS
telah menyertai FOI sejak kali pertama diadakan
melalui platform secara maya dan kali ini turut
serta secara fizikal yang diadakan bertempat di
Lobi Bangunan KPT, Putrajaya.
Pada FOI kali ini, UMS menampilkan
keunikan Sabah melalui dimensi Inovasi
Sains dan Inovasi Sosial. Ini termasuklah

Foreword From
DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR
RESEARCH & INNOVATION, UMS
We would like to offer a smart partnership between UMS
inventors and potential investors for the intellectual property
commercialisation of our high-quality products.
UMS shall facilitate and empower relevant companies that
endeavour commercialisation continuously for local products.
First and foremost, my heartiest congratulations to our academicians
of Universiti Malaysia Sabah for their contributions beyond research
and for successfully showcasing their innovative products for
commercialisation. With the primary vision of being an innovative
university of global standing, UMS is moving forward and striving to
lead towards innovative societies. To materialise such a vision, the
university always provides a dynamic research and innovation
ecosystem that extends within and outside the university
environment. These supports are governed through UMS's
initiatives in fostering local synergy with the university's strategic
partners, predominantly the state and national agencies, and
financial sustainability to ensure uninterrupted research and
innovation projects.
Based on the Penta helix collaboration model,
the success of social innovation is influenced by firm
relationship building with multiple entities, namely
the university, industry, government, community and
media-related organisations. Here lies the need for
effective engagement between the university,
community, and our partners. The final results would
be societies that are not only innovative but self-
sustaining in many
aspects, especially from a socioeconomic
perspective and the well-being of the people.
Part of the university's third mission entails
translating innovative products, programs
and techniques into society at large through
commercialisation. This process requires a concerted
effort from investors and commercialisation agencies
before it
is readily available for the profit-making
market. Here, we would like to offer a smart
partnership between UMS inventors and
potential investors for the intellectual property
commercialisation of our high-quality products. UMS
shall facilitate and empower relevant companies that
endeavour commercialisation
continuously for local products.
I sincerely hope you will visit the UMS booth and
have a peek at some of the innovative products and
programs from northern Borneo. On behalf of UMS,
we thank the Ministry of Higher Education for this
opportunity in this event. Congratulations to all
exhibitors from UMS, and we strive to excel in
leading towards innovative societies."
Best wishes,
YBHG. PROFESSOR IR. DR. ROSALAM HJ. SARBATLY

STUDIES
(BORIIS)
UMS institute designed to manage the needs of
research and development focuses on local
produce in the state of Sabah.
Results of research and development are expected to increase the knowledge
and understanding of the area. Research and development includes creative
work undertaken on a systematic basis to increase the stock of knowledge that
is useful to the researcher.
BORNEO INSTITUTE FOR INDIGENOUS STUDIES (BORIIS)
Sabah culture is so colourful.
We have over 30 indigenous and 200 sub-ethnic
groups, most of them have distinct traditional
costume, a heritage that tells the world their
identity, traditions, and stories. Sabah is
beautiful because of this cultural diversity.
Traditional costume in Sabah always variants
due to different occasions such as wedding,
ceremony and social status. But many ethnic
groups share common elements such as linangki
(needlework), siga (headgear) and belts (e.g
Tangkong, Himpogot)
BORNEO INSTITUTE FOR INDIGENOUS STUDIES (BORIIS)
Sabah food is based on staples such as rice with a
great variety of other ingredients and different
methods of food preparations due to the
influence of the state's varied geography and
indigenous cultures that were quite distinct from
the regional cuisines of the Peninsular Malaysia.
There are plenty of traditional dishes in Sabah that need to
try at least once in our lifetime.
Here are the eight of them below:
· Ambuyat · Tuhau
· Hinava · Latok
· Bambangan · Nomson
· Pinasakan · Linopot
BORNEO INSTITUTE FOR INDIGENOUS STUDIES (BORIIS)
The musical heritage of Sabah is a fantastic collection of
rhythms and sounds, movements and colours. With over
30 different ethnic entities this is only natural, more so
since Sabahans simply love music and song. There is
hardly any ceremony that would not require the
accompaniment of music.
Most ethnic groups in Sabah have their distinct tunes and
rhythms for various ceremonies. Men and women play
alongside with each other, but numbers and combinations of
instruments and dancers vary, as well as certain taboos
connected to different instruments

(FPSK)
UMS was established in 24 November 1994. The Faculty of Medicine and Health
Sciences in the main campus was established in 2011, and the Nursing Clinical
Block in nearby Likas in 2012.
The School of Medicine, now known as the Faculty of Medicine and Health
Sciences (FMHS), or Fakulti Perubatan dan Sains Kesihatan (FPSK) in Bahasa
Malaysia, was established in 2003 with the primary aim to increase the number
of medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals, especially in Sabah,
to meet the increasing demand for such personnel in Malaysia. Its main
objective is to produce committed and concerned medical and health
professionals who are sensitive to the health needs of the communities, with
emphasis to their total wellbeing within their cultural and traditional
orientation.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is steadfast in its quest to achieve
excellence in medical and health education, which is geared toward producing
competent graduates capable of contributing productively in the provision of
best practice health care in the community, the nation and the world.
PUPUK
(PROGRAM

UNIVERSITI
KELUARGA)
PUPUK is an academic
module from the
Faculty of Medicine
and Health Sciences
(FPSK) of Universiti
Malaysia Sabah (UMS)
in Sikuati Kudat that
has started since
2003.
Among the main objectives of PUPUK are PUPUK as a vehicle for continuous and
steady interaction between the University, the Malaysian Ministry of Health, the
Sabah State Government and the local population in making long-term
community health programs a success. It promotes community activities and
health education of UMS in Kudat District, at the national level and then to the
international level. Moreover, PUPUK as a basis for the development of
community health activities by UMS in rural areas. It strengthen existing
relationships between the University and the local community.
Since 2003, the PUPUK program has involved
more than 1500 medical students and almost
600 families from 35 villages around the town
of Sikuati Kudat. All students are required to
visit their foster families at least three times a
year.
This means that they have to visit the villages of
their adoptive parents at least 15 times during the
5 years of the Doctor of Medicine Degree
Program. It requires students to observe,
understand the process and function of a family
and, if necessary, perform interventions based on
educational, medical and health goals. The
introduced concept also emphasizes the ability of
students to engage and collaborate with agencies
and local authorities to provide assistance in
dealing with family health problems, regardless of
religious, cultural and social differences. The
PUPUK program has also successfully published
articles in indexed journals and won several
medals at international conferences.
