TEACHING PHILOSOPHY, EDUCATIONAL
SKILLS, SAMPLES OF WORK
My Teaching Philosophy
Similar to learning, my teaching philosophy is an ever evolving process. Students are dynamic
and have many pieces that contribute to their individual learning. As an educator, it is my duty to
foster this learning through multiple modalities that support various educational methods. My
teaching philosophy aligns most with cognitivism. Critical thinking drives nursing practice every
day, therefore I must teach how to grow from one topic to another. It begins with taking blood
pressure, to understand the basics, to understanding why we challenge an order for metoprolol
with hypotension. To me learning is not passive, but building on the foundation that I can
provide.
I encompass the adult learner, and understand that content I teach must relate to real
world experiences. I need to be enthusiastic and show how all of the content that I teach has
meaning for the larger picture. I respect the experiences that the adult learner has, whether from
previous work or clinical situations. I value what each student has to bring to the table.
My promise to my students is that I will be available, honest and help foster growth. I
will be fair and listen to the concerns voiced by students. After all, they will drive their learning
with feedback that I receive. My students should be present mentally and physically for lectures
and learning opportunities. I expect my students to bring their best as I will always bring mine.
