FAMILY - Bosnia and Herzegovina

Family is not a house you build, renovate, choose,
that is something what you gain once and never lose.
Family is not a device that has parts you can replace,
it's always there, it isn't something you have to chase.
Family is a port where the lighthouse always shines,
and to which you always return from your wanderings.
Family is an old tree with rich canopies
on which, quite naturally, new branches take their place.
And when something in it family bothers you,
like a pebble in your boots,
you can always rely on its deep roots.

Oreste Lombardi

My motorcycle was a 200 cc Francis Barnett
made in England. I built an aluminum box that
attached behind the seat.

VISITSTORY

Saline Valley
Salts and Brines

Oreste Lombardi - USA

This project began in December 1953 with the selection of salt deposits and their source areas for a master’s
thesis research project for New Mexico Tech. The selected salt deposits had to be in a closed basin (valley)
with no contamination from neighboring basins (valleys). The information available at that time on salt
deposits were sketchy; thus, I would have to visit the basins in person to make the selection. Most of the
basins were small. Saline Valley appeared to be problematic due to size and complexity; therefore, it w as not
in my original exploration plan.

I planned a one-week exploration trip to scout out the various basins beginning in the region around Searles
Lake (a dry lake) on about 17 Aug 1954. The best I could find in that area had only a thin covering of salt.
Spent my first night sleeping on the Trona golf course in the sand. I visited the Death Valley National
Monument headquarters at Wild Rose Canyon in the Panamint mountains. They advised me on road
conditions. They said that the roads were doable. I reached Scotty’s Castle, in Death Valley by sunset. A mild
day with a high of 41 degrees C. There were no tourists. The employees at Scotty’s Castle invited me to use
the motel bathing facilities for free, which I did. My motorcycle was a 200 cc Francis Barnett made in
England. I built an aluminum box that attached behind the seat.

In It was 20 liters of water and a petrol can as well as food.
My sleeping bag was tied over the front wheel. My map board
was attached to the side of the aluminum box. My bike got 35
Km to the liter of petrol.
Next morning, I left Scotty’s Castle on my way to Racetrack
Valley. Went by Ubehebe Crater, a volcanic explosion crater.
In some of my Facebook posts I use this crater as a suitable
hell hole to send your bad thoughts.

HOMAGI.NET 22

VISITSTORY

Past Ubehebe crater (picture) the road rapidly
deteriorated. Recent rains had just converted the road
into a gravely wash, which made progress difficult.
Several hours and 30 Km later I arrived at Racetrack
Valley at 1070 meters elevation. Racetrack was a saltless
mud flat. The rocks leave tracts on the lake bed. Riding
the motorcycle on the dry lake gives the sensation of being
in a surreal world. When it rains (rare), the mud flat
becomes exceedingly slick. . Then thin ice forms on the
shallow water. When the ice begins to melt, winds pile the
ice against rocks.

This gives the needed surface area for the wind to act on to move the rocks. This is a rare event. It does not
happen every year. At the edge of the lake is the grandstand composed of monzonite pegmatite with a heavy
dark coat of desert varnish. It appears to have emerged from the lake. The grandstand sheds the rocks that
move. The moving rocks weigh upward to hundreds of pounds.

https://slate.com/technology/2014/09/mystery-solved-the-sliding-stones-of-death-valley.html

The above URL describes the rock movement mechanism in detail.

Leaving Race Tract Valley, I descended into
Saline valley via the Lippincott lead mines
road (not maintained) and got this grand
view of Saline valley

Like I said before, Saline Valley was not in my
plans; however, the unforeseen was about to
intrude and change everything. My next
destination was Hidden Valley and Pictured rocks
on a road that would take me to Panamint
Mountains and then to Panamint Valley. The rains
had turned the road into a sandy wash.

HOMAGI.NET 23

VISITSTORY

Could not reach Pictured Rock due to deep sand and lack of power to handle deep sand. As I got ingloriously
stuck in deep sand on a steep hill, a jeep came over the top of the hill. I was informed that there were many
more hills like it, but only worse. It was recommended that I take the Lippincott Road to Saline Valley to get to
Panamint Valley. The situation was so obvious, I took the recommendation without dispute. I already knew

21HOaMbAouGtI.tNheEThorrors of the Lippincott Road. Also, the washed-out road I came in on was bad enough. I did not
want any more of it. Rather than turn back, I pressed forward to Saline Valley. The URL below is for a topo map of
the area. It shows the Lippincott mines and the Vega Mines. Going down the Lippincott Road by car would have
been suicidal. A big motorcycle would not have made it.

https://mapcarta.com/23157316/Map

This road to Saline Valley looked impossible. It snaked down a steep canyon with grades up to 18 %. Covered
with loose rocks. My bike skidded and creped down the road threatening at almost every instant to go into a
skid and perhaps over the edge. There were wash outs such that a car could not have made it. The brakes got
hot and stunk. White knuckle ride to the bottom. Reached the bottom of Saline Valley late in the afternoon. I
wanted to spend the night at the warm springs. However due to distance and poor road condition, and the
lateness of the hour I turned back and went up the road to the Vega Mine Camp at the mouth of Hunter canyon.
This was at the top of an alluvial fan. The base of the fan was at the salt deposits.

There were two salt miners staying at the Vega
Mine camp: Morris and Tony Pinheiro of
Bakersfield. They had an arrangement with Mr.
Rowan of Bakersfield and “Monty” Monteith to live
at the Vega Nine camp as caretakers. Caretaking”
was important to the owners because of junk
thieves.

I spent Friday exploring Saline valley. I was
impressed with the valley as a potentially fruitful
area of investigation.

There were springs that would simplify the logistics of exploration. Saline Valley presented itself as a
‘package” deal, meaning no contamination from other basins. The climate was pleasantly hot. I say that
because I enjoyed the heat. I was endowed with a body designed for extreme heat. It felt good to me. And the
nights were free from chills despite this being an unusually cool summer. Saline Valley has the same climate as
Death Valley.

The salt is reported to be 99 % plus pure Sodium chloride down to about 40 meters (huh?) I say, huh, because
upon drilling I found only about 60 cm at the most of salt before getting into mud. Streams flowing into the
valley from the mountains disappear into the alluvium and reappear at the borders of the salt. The origin of
the salt is from the leaching of marine sediments and volcanic materials. Some of it comes from the sky as sea
salt spray fed into rain clouds.

The exploration of other basins yielded disappointing results. I went to the experts. They said that Saline
Valley was possible. I decided on doing Saline Valley.

During the next 3 weeks I studied Saline Valley and collected water samples in glass bottles. These had to be
discarded due to exchange of trace elements with the glass.

VISITSTORY

December 1954, I spent two weeks in Saline Valley. I met Mr. Taylor from Bakersfield. He had a scintillator for
uranium prospecting. We got together and did a radiological survey across the salt deposits and into the
mountains on the east side. The salt area had the lowest activity. The highest radioactive was found in the
muds and the dirty salt area on the north side of the salt.

The nights got a tad chilly. I slept in an Eskimo suit inside a sleeping bag inside a sleeping bag. I am made for
the heat. I do not do well with cold. I collected brine and water samples in one-pint (abt 500 ml) polyethylene
bottle for spectrographic analyses. The road coming in from the south was hard packed snow that didn’t thaw
in mid-day as it was in the shadows most of the time. I did my travel by motorcycle early in the morning when
the temperature was below freezing so I could get traction on the snow. At near the freezing point, the ice and
snow became very slick, too slick for a motorcycle. I spent weekends in Trona. Joe Edwards family let me
sleep at their place, which was a wonderful break. At that time, I was going to school at Caltech and living with
my mother in Altadena, California. Riding back to Altadena in rain over the Angeles Crest highway was not fun.

The saga of Monte Monteith: He was one of the owners of the Vega mine and the Vega mine camp in 1954, where
I lived. He gave color to the history of Inyo County. He dealt in Real estate, but there was a problem. He sold land
that was not his to sell, thus he made many enemies. He had plans, high wide, and handsome, for the Vega mine
camp. It would become a resort with a swimming pool.

Excavation for the pool got underway. He was also
fascinated with aviation and flew airplanes. Somehow,
he got a young Indian mad at him. I do not know what
Monte did, but it must have been raw. The young man
had homicide on his mind as he crept up to the Vega
mine camp. He looked in the window and saw a man
that looked like Monte. However, the man was an
infantile paralysis cripple who was there to mind the
property to keep junk thieves away. The young man took
a successful pot shot, thinking that he killed Monte. He
was arrested and tried in Inyo County Court.

The court could not condone this error in judgement. He got 2 years for this error. Had he got Monte; he
would have probably been given a medal for services rendered. When He got out, Monte grew uneasy. Then it
was rumored that the FBI was interested in Monte in connection with drug dealing. Whereupon Monte did a
disappearing act, never to be seen again. This was about the time I came in on the scene.

Vega Mine Camp at the mouth of Hunter Canyon. There were two springs there, one somewhat warm and the
other cold. It was said that the place had both warm and cold running water naturally. These springs fed a
small stream and pond by the house. A wood bridge was built over the stream where you could sit under
shade and dangle your feet in the water. The house and adjacent structures are no longer there. I had an
arrangement with the Rowan family to have the use of a small shed that was furnished with a table and chair. It
served as my field laboratory and living quarters. In July I was surprised to find a young lady, Dorothy Button
working as a domestic for the Rowans. She was a Timbisha Indian (A Shoshone tribe). The Timbisha used to
live in Death Valley, and Saline Valley. She lived in Lone Pine at about 1220 meters elevation.

HOMAGI.NET 25

VISITSTORY

She came to work by walking from Owens Valley to the top of the Inyo mountains, about 3050 meters,
elevation and then down to Vega Mine camp at about 340 meters elevation. This was July! This was not
unusual for the Timbisha and related tribes in the old days. Because of rules against cousin marriages, they
would walk long distances to distant communities to find a spouse. The routes taken in romancing were the
same routes used earlier in migration. Thus, migration routes became romance trails.

Rowan family from Bakersfield was there that
summer to harvest salt. They had a truck and
front-end loader for that purpose. Mid-august, Mr.
Rowan had a sunstroke. He survived, but no more
salt mining. After that I was there alone. No mining
activity in the summer. At that time no one did
sightseeing or camping in Saline Valley. No one
lived there in the summer except me after Rowans
retreated to Bakersfield. He had the only flushing
toilet in the valley until somebody used too much
toilet paper. Has not worked since.

In my shack, I put the table legs in cans of oil to
keep creepy-crawlies and mice off my table. Slept
outside.

She came to work by walking from Owens Valley to the top of the Inyo mountains, about 3050 meters,
elevation and then down to Vega Mine camp at about 340

I did my bathing at the Palm warm springs northeast of the salt beds. A natural hot tub. (Photo)

This was long before the nudists discovered the springs.
I brought a big box of 500 ml polyethylene bottles for collecting spring waters, ground waters, and brines. To get
brine and ground water samples I hand drilled boreholes with a hand auger. I borrowed the auger from a friend in
West End on Searle’s Lake near Trona. I made a device for using mouth suction to get the sample out of the bore
hole by drawing up a mix of water and air from as low as 20 feet into the ground. I could intercept ground waters
moving towards the salt playa as they got more saline via evaporation through the shallow ground cover. The
weather was always hot so all work had to be done with gloves. Anything metal was too hot to touch. My safety
rule was to start the day with four gallons (16 liters) of water. When half of it was consumed, I went home. I never
violated this rule. I never went climbing in the canyons. A broken leg meant an agonizing death since no one would
come looking for me in time. I never got close to sinkholes on the salt flats because if the ground gave way, they
would never find me. In Saline Valley, you are incommunicado.

With an adze I hacked a motorcycle road across the thenardite area on the north of the salt to get access to the
east side where I found brine springs and streams (nearly saturated with salt)

On Saturdays, I Traveled out of Saline Valley into Panamint Valley and then to Trona on Searle’s Lake, (a dry lake
covered with a salt crust under which were valuable salt brines containing useful chemicals). I stayed overnight with
the Edwards family so I could go to church. The church gave me a home teaching beat that went from Wild Rose
Canyon in the Panamint Mountains to the north and then south to Johannesburg and Randsburg. A beat 150 Km
long. I worked it by meeting my teaching companion in Panamint Valley as I came from Saline ‘valley. I parked my
motorcycle behind a big rock. Then we went to the Death Valley Ranger station in Wild Rose Canyon to teach a
family. This was the first time they had home teachers. It was great pleasant surprise to them. They had teen age
children and were concerned about them and access to church and good schools. The next month that we came
the father announced that because of our visit he wanted to get his family active in the church and in good schools
for his children. Accordingly, he took a job in San Bernardino and would not be in Death Valley anymore. 

hingga tiada lagi penawar rindu

Yah, aku telah berjuang merangkai aksara
agar kelak menjadi kisah indah
namun…
duri menyusup, memendam perih
kesetiaan terkoyak karenamu
hingga tiada lagi lantun indah menawan hati

Lalu...
mengapa hatimu begitu cepat berpaling?
sedang cintaku, belum sempat berpeluk….

48 tahun konsisten bersastra

Saut Poltak Tambunan adalah seorang

sastrawan Indonesia dari etnik Batak, yang telah
banyak menghasilkan karya sastra, baik berupa
novel maupun cerpen. Saut Poltak Tambunan
sering dipanggil “Saut”, tetapi di dunia sastra
lebih sering disebut “Bang SPT”.
Karya tulis SPT telah mencapai lebih dari 60
buku. Buku-buku itu terdiri dari novel, cerpen,
puisi, dan juga panduan pelatihan penulisan
kreatif. Disamping buku-buku sastra, SPT juga
menulis naskah drama dan skenario film.
Sebagian novel karya SPT telah diangkat ke film
layar lebar dan sinetron.

SPT lahir tanggal 28 Agustus 1952 di Balige,
Sumatra Utara. Dia sempat berkarir sebagai
Pegawai Negeri Sipil di Departemen Keuangan
sampai pensiun, namun dia tetap konsisten
dalam kegiatan menulis. Pada masa pensiunnya,
SPT menetap di kawasan Jakarta Timur.

LATAR BELAKANG AWAL
SPT mengawali kegiatan menulisnya di Jakarta
pada tahun 1973, dengan dimuatnya cerpen
pertama SPT di majalah Varia terbitan Jakarta.
SPT memiliki kisah unik tersendiri pada masa
awal kepenulisannya itu. SPT bercerita:

“Saya menjadi pegawai negeri pada umur 20
tahun, ditempatkan di unit kerja yang tak
begitu sibuk. Dengan kepolosan seorang
pegawai baru yang masih muda, saya ingin
pamer kepada atasan bahwa saya bisa

pekerjaan. Tetapi, memang pekerjaan
mengetik tidak banyak, pekerjaan itu dapat
dituntaskan oleh pegawai lama. Mesin ketik

Mas....
Lungguha kene
Pirsani parine wis wiwit kuning
Eseme para among tani pait madu
Sanajan ora melu duwe
Bisa ndeleng esem edi tangga teparo
Uga melu nyawang endahe mega

Mas....
Lungguha kene
Rasa kangen mring kluwarga
Wis tumujem ing jroning dhadha
Kapang marang kampung klairan
Kapang marang ibu kang wus sumare
Uga bapak ing alam kalanggengan

Mas....
Lungguha kene
Rungokna critaku esuk iki
Uga janjiku marang sliramu
Ganthelaning ati
Dudu janji kang ngayawara
Panjenegan kudu percaya
Aku ora bakal cidra
Amarga tresna iki ora mung ana nerta
Nanging tumus nganti tekan dhadha
Mugya Gusti paring nugraha
Gesang tumekaning ndelahan

Esuk umun-umun
Mbarengi keprungu swara

Jago kluruk
Meh tutup gelaran srabeh ketan

Sing tuku jejel riyel
Saka njaban rangkah uga kathah
Tangga teparo ora trima siji loro

Uga separo
Meh kabeh kepranan rasa
Ya rasane srabeh ketane Mbak Mudah
Nggelar dagangan sakidule telon Talun
Sacedhake Pesarean Sunan Blongsong
Lungguh tharik-tharik dha lesehan

Mangadhep ngetan
Sarwa sarwi asesanti
Rahayu lestari kang sami dugi
Dhaharan kuna tumata edi
Dudu cappucino kang ngancani
Amung kopi kothok dheplokane Dewi
Nanging rasa kebacut trisna
Srabeh ketan tetep manjila

Slurup marang kasunyatan
Iwak cilik ngupadi dalan
Marang iline banyu kang saparan-paran

Uga ingsun
Laku lelaku aneng tetepe wektu
Panyuwunan mligi tumuju ruh sejati
Mantepe asih marang Gusti
Bengawan sore iki
Isih nglelana saka angga
Angga janma tuwin ati
Ati kang kebak reridhu
Reridhu jumbuh ing tetalen kalbu

Leladen piring donga.
Munggute rasa

Kemlisik subuh-
Manungsa padha nggayuh
Tresna Sang Kukuh

Garing ketiga,
Ruh-ruh muji "Bathara"
