Groundwater Resource and Vulnerability Assessment (Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology Section) The assessment is in line with the government’s efforts to determine the availability and vulnerability of groundwater in the various rock units of geologic formation and identify additional sources of groundwater for human use. Groundwater is the portion of the Earth’s water cycle that flows underground. Groundwater originates from precipitation that percolates into the ground. Percolation is the flow of water through soil and porous/fractured rock. The water table separates the saturated or aquifer zone, from the unsaturated or vadose zone, where the water does not fill all the voids or spaces in the soil or rock. For CY 2022, there are 3 target municipalities under this activity, namely: Baggao and Alcala in Cagayan Province and Cabagan in Isabela Province. Additionally, the target for the vulnerability assessment is the Pared Watershed encompassing mainly the land area of Baggao and part of the eastern side of Alcala. The activity involves actual measurement of depth of the water table and well from the ground surface using a depth meter, recording of the location of these wells and springs using a handheld GPS, and some other relevant data using a standard datasheet. Additionally, in situ testing of water samples was also done which included readings of temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids (TDS). ACCOMPLISHED GROUNDWATER RESOURCE AND VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT TARGETS FOR CY 2022 No. Province Municipality/Watershed Date Accomplished 1 Cagayan Baggao September 5 to 30, 2022 2 Cagayan Alcala September 5 to 30, 2022 3 Isabela Cabagan October 11 to 21, 2022 4 Cagayan Pared Watershed - • Groundwater Resource Assessment in Baggao and Alcala, Cagayan Province The field survey was conducted on September 5 to 30, 2022 which involved geological mapping and well inventory.

PRIORITY PROGRAMS 167 The survey team did the well inventory within all 48 barangays og Baggao and 24 out of 25 barangays in Alcala covering the Pared Watershed. The wells chosen are mostly shallow or at depth 50 meters or less with the assumptions that these wells tap the unconfined aquifers in the locality. Most of the production wells in Baggao are privately owned and serve a few households, while others are owned by the barangays and serve as communal wells. A total of 108 shallow wells, 2 deep wells, and 5 springs were inventoried. The well depth range from 2.25 meters to 42.42 meters for the shallow wells, while 52 to 64 meters for the deep wells. The water table depth from the ground surface range from 0.69 to 8.04 meters. Moreover, the in-situ water quality testing yielded the following results: Temperature (°C) 27.2 to 34.5 Hydrogen potential (pH) 5.5 to 8 Electrical conductivity (μS/cm) 0.28 to 1.9 TDS 208 to 1,400 In the municipality of Alcala, a total of 30 shallow wells, 8 dug wells, and 6 free flowing artesian wells were inventoried. The well depth ranges from 1.8 to 36 meters, while the water table depth range from 0.4 to 12.12 meters. Meanwhile, the in-situ water quality testing showed the following results: Temperature (°C) 26.9 to 30.8 Hydrogen potential (pH) 6.3 to 9 Electrical conductivity (μS/cm) 0.28 to 2.61 TDS (ppm) 202 to 1,962 • Groundwater Resource Assessment in Cabagan, Isabela Province The survey team conducted well and spring inventory in all 26 barangays of Cabagan. The wells were mostly shallow or at depth of 50m or less with the assumptions that these wells tap the unconfined aquifers in the study area. The springs are located in far-flung areas and access to its locations is a challenge to the team because of the inclement weather brough about by Tropical Depressions Maymay and Neneng and the muddy and slippery trail during the assessment. Most of the production wells are privately owned and serve a few households, while some are owned by the barangays and serve as common wells, and the remaining operates for agricultural purposes. A total of 55 unconfined shallow wells (47 open dug wells and 8 jetmatic wells), 3 Level 3 wells, and 1 spring were inventoried during the assessment. The range of well depth in the municipality is from 4.77 meters up to more than 30 meters and range for groundwater level is between 0.35 meters to 21.72 meters. Additionally, the in-situ water quality testing yielded the following range of results:
