OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE: To promote cooperation and friendship among the breeders and owners of Brittanys and to encourage higher standards in breeding, training and showing of Brittanys in the field and in the show ring; to discourage the breed from becoming split into groups of “field dogs” and “show dogs” and to strive to keep it forever a “dual dog”. American Brittany Club National Walking Gun Dog Championships Ionia, Michigan | October 24 - 29, 2023 We’d like to thank our sponsors, Purina, and Garmin for their continued support of all our Championships and the Field Trial Community at large. We couldn’t hold these contests without their help; from quality feed that fuels our dogs, to the training devices which assist in the honing of our dog’s genetic skills. The monetary support and supplied products offered as prizes to our winners and judges truly help make it all possible. It was great to have our Regional Purina Field Rep. Terry Trzcinski on hand for several day watching the competition and suppling some special items of Purina clothing for competitors – thank you for all you do in supporting Field Trials. I’d like to thank our Field Trial Secretary, Kathy Gulembo for her work in the planning and execution of all parts of these events. Taking entries, organizing all the financial requirements, and continually keeping the multiple aspects of the events on track by preventing things from slipping through the cracks. Kathy does a great job! Thank you, Donna Janulis, for the planning and preparing of meals, for arranging the guest appearance of Kathy Burns with one of her fabulous meals, and by assuring the prompt collection of payment for much of the ancillary parts of this event. A big thank you to Ed Janulis for being our ABC Purina liaison and arranging for the delivery and pickup of Purina Performance Dog Food for competitors and winners alike. Eileen Gust took care of Dog Wagon hospitality, Kathryn Lipski took care of hospitality for our judges, and Terri DeBarr was on hand to work with us in complying with the multiple aspects of rules and regulations specific to the site and the Michigan DNR. Carlos Gust is an incredible asset in Ionia as he’s continually taking care of things most people don’t really notice nor think of – I cannot thank him enough for his intuitive acts that made this event a success. He did the lion’s share of driving the Dog Wagon along with the support of Ron Gulembo and even brought Chuck Langstaff out of retirement to fill in here and there. These three gentlemen are indispensable with their driving and mechanical abilities which were tested one afternoon…repeatedly! Thankfully Dick Lipski was on hand to fill the gap with his side by side when mechanical gremlins descended upon the dog wagon on this hillside before the Boy Scout Bridge – Dick got dogs and handlers where they needed to be! The success of these Championships depends upon one of the key elements of any field trial, bird planting. Dick Lipski does a superb job seeing to this task by rising early and putting birds in all the right places. By Dick feeding the birds where they’re released; coveys built and remained throughout the event and not one died during transport or over the 7 days in the bird pens on site. Quite a contrast to the last several years – Browns Bluff Gamebirds raises quality birds! Bob Bakas and Mary Stevens each made major contributions towards fund raising for this event. Bob provided and raffled off incredible items: a Ruffland Kennel, Apple watch, 55” TV, Blank Pistol, and a Garmin Astro 430 – great stuff! Mary, with the monetary support of her husband Jim, put together multiple gift baskets to be raffled off or sold at silent auction during EACH event, Amateur and Open! These baskets were as nice or nicer than anything I’ve seen, even those commercially available – thank you Mary! Thank you to each handler, trainer, and owner who attended, for your support of these events; we appreciate all the work, time and efforts involved in getting here. We hope to see you all back next year and encourage everyone with a qualified dog to come to Ionia and compete in the 2024 ABC National Walking Gun Dog Championships next October! There’s nothing like crisp Fall air, the smell of freshly falling leaves, and the visual wonder of it combined with prismatic refractions of sunlight off the frosted vegetation during the early morning; it was wonderful to be in Ionia again! What a special venue to have for these ABC National Walking Gun Dog Championships! The American Brittany ▬ 10 ▬ January 2024

National Open Walking Gun Dog Championship October 24 – 26, 2023 Judges – Rodney Albin & Jim Cipponeri Reporter - Mike Poehler Our judges were Rodney Albin from Missouri and Jim Cipponeri from Michigan. Rodney raises quail and runs Vizslas around the country, and Jim participating regularly in the Pointer world from the woods to the prairies. We cannot thank them enough for their time in the saddle, sharp eyes, and attention to the entire performance of each dog. It’s a large commitment to spend the time traveling and the time in the saddle, required to judge these events and we are very grateful for their willingness to make the commitment to do so. This year’s renewal saw 29 dogs entered with 27 coming to the line to contend for the 2023 Open title. Weather was mostly conducive to the running of bird dogs with only a short delay on our second day due to heavy rain overnight. We elected to let the courses drain a bit before starting on Wednesday to afford every dog a fair an opportunity as possible. We still had strong flying birds when put to flight with every dog having multiple bird contacts throughout the stake. The scenery was magnificent with the Ionia Grounds being in peak Fall splendor for the start of these Nationals. THE RUNNING: Brace 1a: Turning Points Shenanigans (Shandi), Julie Nelson - POSTED Brace 1b: Kozy’s Rocky Mountain Gambler (Eli), Al Cropek The first brace broke away at 8:30 on a beautiful sunny day with a projected high of 72 degrees. Shandi and Eli started off slow and grew in speed, range, and application during their time on the ground. Each dog was found standing apart with beautiful style at 15 to card their first finds with all in order. Both dogs stood together at 18 with Eli suffering a breach of manners ending his day. Shandi carded additional finds at 24 and 29 with nice style. At 33 she suffered a non-productive at the site of her first find. Shandi was out of pocket as we approached the exit of the dog leg field with scout and handler searching the area she was last seen to no avail. Moving on, at 59 point was called by the scout in the open near where Shandi was last seen for her final find as time expired. She made some very nice moves over the hour; the judges awarded Shandi 4th place for her efforts. Brace 2a Newton de la Source d’Hannanatchee (Newt), Jackie Hutwagner - POSTED Brace 2b Starlight’s Mercury Out Ryder (Ryder) – Bob Bakas for Teresa Richmond – POSTED Newt was fast and snappy on the ground, hunting well and busy for the entire hour. He carded finds at 10, 26, 40 and 57 mins. with a nice back at 30. His most memorable find came at 40 mins. with Ryder backing beautifully from a distance on a large covey along the swamp edge past the creek crossing; a beautiful picture of 2 dogs doing it right. Without a slight bobble, Newt would have been in the placements. Ryder was fast and fluid on the ground with many nice moves and a solid performance for the hour. He carded finds at 8, 24, 30, 47 and 50 mins. along with his beautifully executed back at 40. Ryder hung up in the corner near the western levee approaching the loan Oak requiring some effort to get turned towards the front prior to time. The judges awarded Ryder Runner-up honors for his solid performance. Brace 3a Sigbrit’s Evil Side of the Road (Ren), Eddie Manifold Brace 3b Kala’s Thunder and Lightning of Shortbarrels (Boomer), Thom Christnagel Ren was fast and forward at the start of the hour with several nice moves. He became headstrong, erratic, and shorter as time went on. An early argument with his handler occurred during his first find at 4. Ren had a beautiful find at 31 with his undoing coming at 52 mins. where temptation got the best of him to end his day. Boomer was busy at moderate range, hunting hard the entire hour to card beautiful finds at 7, 18 and 59 mins., and he also carded a beautiful back at 4 mins. His stand at 35 mins. in the woods resulted in a bobble which knocked him out of contention. Brace 4a Sassafras Benellie (Nellie), Al Cropek Brace 4b KDel’s Eagle Magnum Hotshot (Shooter), Ken Delong Nellie was fast, independent, and headstrong from the start ignoring her handler at 8 min. resulting in an early walk to the wagon for a breach of manners. Shooter was fast and forward from the start, making some nice moves with speed and purpose. He carded a non-productive at 8, a nice find at 10, then a bobble on relocation after a long flushing attempt at 14 ended his bid early. Brace 5a Ace’s One Eyed Jack (Jackson), Ed Janulis Brace 5b Dogwood’s Moose (Moose), Chris Logan Upon breakaway, both dogs took off fast with Moose heading forward and Jackson heading hard left to be found standing with style at 2. Jackson back his bracemate with lofty style at 22 and carded his 2nd find at 24 upon release. He proved to be a handful at times with a purpose that wasn’t always in agreement with his handler, who elected to end their day at 33 mins. Moose was fast and forward with pleasing range, style, and application throughout his hour. He carded finds at 5, 10, 15, 22, and 51 mins. with a non-productive at 33 in some extremely thick autumn olive bushes. Moose’s most memorable find came at 51 mins. after taking the entire The American Brittany ▬ 11 ▬ January 2024

left edge of the field leading to the Boy Scout Bridge, starting at the entrance of the field, going clockwise from cut to conclusion of the entire edge of the field, then taking the line across the front to stand smartly with style like a hook caught him by the nose, on a small covey. Moose finished his hour exiting the corner of the field at Tuttle and Ainsworth roads prior to Cardiac Hill. The judges named Moose 2023 National Walking Gun Dog Champion for his efforts. Brace 6a Beech River’s Light ‘Em Up Lulu (Lulu), Tavis Shuler Brace 6b Spring Hill’s Spirit Del Prado (Del), Al Cropek Lulu is fun dog to watch with a snappy and attractive gait with her pattern and range growing throughout the hour. She stood on opposite ends of the line with her bracemate at 9 to card a beautiful find. Lulu had a non-productive at 45 and her 2nd find at 52 mins. She ended her hour with an extended move as time was called, then established a beautiful find at the end of that line after judgement. Del is a young dog with speed and style, laying down a forward run and carded a lofty headed find at 9 mins. with great intensity. Unfortunately, non-productives at 24 and 32 mins. ended the day for this young dog with a bright future. Brace 7a Double Double Toil and Trouble (Deuce), Kevin Remmers Brace 7b Pretty Blue Eyes A Sweet Touch of Charlie B (Charlie), Bob Bakas The first brace of day 2 broke away to overcast skies after overnight rain prompting a slight delay to allow the pathways to drain. Deuce and Charlie broke away quickly eating up the course. Deuce carded his first find at 8, another wide left of the course at 15 and established a nice back at 19 at the line separating the two halves of Hires Field. After Charlies find at 19, both dog dug themselves a significant hole upon release. Deuce continued making several nice moves with consistent application and speed to stand again at 38 mins. with a step at the shot. After making a nice move to stand again at 45 mins. Deuce succumbed to temptation and prematurely ended his day. Charlie ran big, wide, and fast from the start, staying mostly forward and carded his first find at 12 mins. in the NW tree mott in Hires Field. Standing again at 19 with all in order, both dogs bobbled upon release, with Charlie eventually digging deep into the brush of the SE corner of the field to emerge from the woods edge halfway down the field with speed and purpose and a winged adversary leading him astray, ending his day at 25. Brace 8a Over Under Reign the Field (Reign), Al Cropek Brace 8b Waypoint Deacon of the Hunt (Deke), Thom Christnagel Reign broke away fast, fluid, and far flung with many nice moves leading to her finds. She stood alone at 16 and 32 with a divided find at 23; each with nice style and intensity. He most memorable find was her undoing; after crossing the Derby creek she disappeared fast along the swamp edge to be found standing way to the front at 32. After a long flushing effort, Reign took and aggressive hop at the shot to end what was an exciting bid. Deke dug into the cover with power and carried lines through the thick brush in the fashion of a grouse dog. He hunted his entire hour stringing together a very pleasing pattern through the lower orchard along the swamp leading to the chute. He carded finds alone at 20 and 56 mins., sharing a divided find at 23. His most memorable find was at 56 mins. on the edge of the large dugout after the chute where his handler went over the edge while flushing a few times. Birds were produced upon a brief location and Deke closed his hour in the field leading to the western levee putting down a strong performance. Brace 9a Bantam ‘N Dr Jac’s Shooter (Shooter), Mike Magnuson Brace 9b Atos (Atos), Jackie Hutwagner Shooter broke away with some initial hesitation to stand at 4 with uncertainty, and with Atos backing from great distance. Upon release from the find he warmed to the task and uncorked a big move far to the right edge to stand beautifully at 15 mins. on a divided find, where Shooter chose to close the distance to the birds before his handler arrived. The temptation was too much with Shooter ending his day at the flush and shot. Atos was fast and made huge opening moves and sustained great pressure while backing at 4. He continued making nice moves and putting down a strong run to challenge the winner. He carded finds at 15, 23, 37, 39, 44 and 52 with great style and intensity. Encountering birds again at 56 resulted in a breach of etiquette to end a very worthy performance. Brace 10a Royal Flush Sir Oliver Twist (Ollie), Al Cropek Brace 10b Cedar Glen Distruptin’ the Peace (Colt), Billy Jones Ollie ran hard, and mostly forward covering the ground with speed and class. He pointed nicely at 13 with a difficult flushing scenario requiring him to relocate, with a bobble to end his day there. Colt was fast and fluid on the ground, making several nice moves over the hour. Colt carded finds at 10, 13, 38 and 52 mins. and had a nice back at 14 mins. while regaining the front from his first find, and also had a non-productive at 30 mins. If not for being backwards at times, Colt would certainly have been in the mix for a placement. Brace 11a Romence’s Life of Riley (Riley), Julie Romence – DROPPED TO 15b Brace 11b Alder Zerandipity (Zera), Richard Johnson – SCRATCHED AFTER DRAWING The American Brittany ▬ 12 ▬ January 2024

Brace 12a Red Granite’s Henry Will Be A Star (Henry), Bob Bakas – RAN IN PLACE Brace 12b Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Willie (Willie),Al Cropek – SCRATCHED Running as a BYE, Henry ran fast, and hard, charging along the edges and making nice moves during his time on the ground. Upon entering the Derby course, he made a great move to stand at 20 mins. then dove in to end his bid and close the second day of running without any new dogs being posted. Brace 13a Alder Swamp Collie (Billy), Paul Renius Brace 13b Miss Behavin’ (Ivy), Al Cropek This pair were fast, forward, and out of pocket at times, hunting together and apart during their time on the ground. Handlers had issues staying on course while each tried to protect and handle their charges. Each dog stood at 25 min. on separate lines 150 yards apart in Hires Field with all in order. This brace continued with dogs and handlers needing some separation, as evidenced at 42 mins. when Billy decided to relocate some of the feathered foe, with Ivy joining in as he ran by. Brace 14a Burning Glen Cover Girl (Lucy), Mike Mercanti Brace 14b It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere (Cooper), Rebecca Walters This brace broke away just before the Boy Scout Bridge at moderate range and speed. Cooper carded non-productives at 17 and 25 mins. ending his day prior to the Derby creek crossing. Lucy ran her hour with a quick, snappy gait that was fun to watch as she was clearly happy in her work. She stood with style at 15, 18, 27 and 43 mins. with intensity on her game. She carded a non-productive at 56 mins. and ended her hour nearing the chute area. Her most memorable find came after the Derby creek crossing, where she jumped out of the water to walk the boards behind her handler, then shot forward along the swamp edge to stand at the end of the mott along the lower edge. A large covey was produced with all in order for Lucy who remained staunch through it all; she’s really a nice dog to watch! Brace 15a Rabeau’s Genuine Tequila (Tequila), Al Cropek Brace 15b Romence’s Life of Riley (Riley), Julie Romence Tequila (T) broke away with speed and purpose to be found standing at 3 mins. with Riley backing. Upon release from her find, T made some big and far flung moves through the shotgun range along the woods, across the front of the orchard to disappear forward. She was spotted returning from the front and took off forward again upon seeing her handler. At 20, T was spied flying fast and forward with a feathered foe leading her astray to end her day. Riley’s run grew in range and application at a moderate, yet consistent speed throughout the hour. She hunted the available cover efficiently for her handler and display incredible patience at times waiting for her handler to produce some tight sitting birds. Riley’s finds were at 24, 42, 46, 50 and her most memorable coming at 55 mins. with her handler stuck in the brush trying to get to her dog after the shot; Riley stood with style and intensity through it all. The American Brittany ▬ 14 ▬ January 2024 L to R: Judge Kevin Remmers, Chris Logan, Bob Bakas with Moose, Carlos and Eileen Gust with Holly, Judge John Hott, Reporter Mike Poehler with Riley, Julie Romence, Jackie Hutwagner with Atos. Amateur NWGD Championship

Judges – John Hott & Kevin Remmers Reporter - Mike Poehler Or judges were Kevin Remmers and John Hott, both hailing from Illinois. Kevin is a farmer and has a long history in Brittanys and this event; John is a stalwart in the Pointer world and retired as Site Manager for Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area, one of Illinois State Parks and Field Trial venues. We truly appreciate the willingness of these gentlemen to give back to the sport with their time in the saddle and judicial attention to each competitor in making their decisions during the stake and choosing to focus on the positive in every dog that ran. This year’s renewal saw 27 dogs entered with 27 coming to the line to make their run at the 2023 Amateur title. Bird work was plentiful on strong flying quail which made for a quality event, with no dog going birdless. Weather was excellent for running bird dogs and the scenery was splendid being just past the peak of fall color. THE RUNNING: Brace 1a Red Granite’s Henry Will Be A Star (Henry),Bob Bakas Brace 2a KDel’s Eagle Magnum Hotshot (Shooter), Ken Delong - POSTED Henry was laying down a powerful run taking edges and making moves from the start. As time went on, he started acting as a free agent and having a handler optional type of day. He carded finds at 28 and 30 mins. with style and intensity, shortly after release from his second find, his handler reached for the leash and escorted him to the wagon at 32 to end his bid. Shooter started out fast and forward with nice moves and range early. He had finds at 7, 20, 28, 38, 43 and his final find at 59 mins. all of which displayed nice style; over his last 10 mins. Shooter’s pattern and ground speed lessened, effecting his placement. The judges awarded Shooter Honorable Mention for his performance. Brace 2a Kala’s Thunder and Lightning of Shortbarrels (Boomer), Thom Christnagel Brace 2b Bantam’N Dr Jac’s Shooter (Shooter), Mike Magnuson This pair broke away working in close proximity at first, working at moderate speed and range, to share a divided find at 17 with all in order. Boomer went on to have nice finds at 20, 24, 50 on a small covey with his final stand coming at 56 mins. after the chute. Shooter started to open up in speed and range towards the end of the hour and carded finds with nice style at 21, 50 and 57 mins. and a non-productive at 30. Both dogs were a pleasure to watch work for their handlers. Brace 3a Ace’s One Eyed Jack (Jackson), Ed Janulis Brace 3b Sigbrit’s Evil Side of the Road (Ren), Eddie Manifold Both dogs broke away near the parking lot at the lone oak to be seen flying to the front and taking the oak line of the shotgun range across from right to left with Ren disappearing behind the line and Jackson pointing at 4 on the front side of the line. Ren next appeared on the backside of the line under birds near Jackson, who was fired over for his first find, while Ren was escorted to the wagon. Jackson continued to work nicely for his handler for the rest of his time, staying forward and doing a nice job covering the cover presented to him. He stood with style at 25 on a nice covey along the swamp, carded a non-productive at 35 and stood again at 43 on a small group of birds. Upon release, Jackson ended his day with a breach of manners at 45. Brace 4a Burning Glen Cover Girl (Lucy), Mike Mercanti Brace 4b Cast-A-Britt Outsmart ‘Em (Deia), Mark Brooks Lucy broke away making very nice moves early with a fluid pattern and really coving the ground. She had finds at 11, 16, 25, 38 and 45 mins. with a bobble that cast a shadow on an otherwise nice performance. Her pattern became sticky at time towards the middle of the hour with a few noticeable moments of indecision. Deia worked at moderate range and speed during her hour, hunting the available cover and staying in touch with her handler. She only carded one find for her efforts, coming at 25 mins. near the double dug out after Hires Field, showing nice style and manners; this pair were busy the entire hour! Brace 5a Alder Zerandipity (Zera), Richard Johnson - POSTED Brace 5b Kozy’s Rocky Mountain Gambler (Eli), Mike Poehler for Pat Koczenasz - POSTED Both dogs broke away fast and forward with Eli standing at 1 min. for his first find, then backing stylishly, shortly upon release towards Zera’s stand at 3. Zera carded additional finds at 18 and 32 with lofty style and great intensity; she had a non-productive at 20 and a divided find at 47 where her handler elected to take another non-productive when Eli’s handler re-located and produced a large covey for him. Zera was fast and forward American Brittany Club National Amateur Walking Gun Dog Championship Ionia, Michigan | October 27 - 29, 2023 The American Brittany ▬ 16 ▬ January 2024

with a beautiful manner of covering the ground, making several nice moves and pointing with beautiful style. She made a large sweeping move to the divided stand at 47. Eli met his handler the night before and did a nice job adjusting to the handler change. He grew in pattern and range over the hour with some big moves leading to the divided stand at 47. He carded beautiful backs at 3 and 32 mins. with finds at 1, 26, 40, and an initially divided find @ 47. Eli had a final covey at 59 where his handler adopted a Charlie Brown & Lucy flushing technique, producing a large covey with the aftershock. Both dogs slowed some in the last 8 mins. but this pair covered some ground over the course of the hour! Brace 6a Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Willie (Willie), Dan Dodson Brace 6b It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere (Cooper), Rebecca Walters Willie broke away nicely, considering he suffered an injury earlier in the week. He made many nice moves over the first half of the hour at speed and pleasing range. The second half showed some effects of the injury with a slowed pace as time went on. He carded finds at 5 and 18 mins. on large coveys with great style and intensity; his other finds at 22 and 44 showed the same impressive style on smaller groups of birds. At 11 mins. he displayed an impressive back where he came flying around a bush at 11 mins. to encounter his bracemate standing, and threw on the brakes as if he’d been hooked in the nose. Cooper stood at 11 and after a long flush was relocated without warning by his handler; a bird was produced with all in order. Cooper stood again at 15 mins. and suffered a breach of manners after a prolonged flushing effort to end his day. Brace 7a Over Under’s Kick It Out (Holly), Eileen Gust - POSTED Brace 7b Romence’s Life of Riley (Riley), Julie Romence - POSTED Both dogs broke away to start day 2 at a moderate pace and range working the same lines together and shared divided finds at 7, 15 and 20 with neither handler being able to put running birds to flight. Holly and Riley kicked it in gear to separate and card finds on opposite sides of Hires Field at 24 mins. with birds put to flight for both dogs. At 33 mins. Holly stood at the end of Hires Field with Riley backing as her handler remained an entire field away. Judge Hott assigned the Marshal to stand with Riley during the stylish back with all in order. Holly stood again at 35 as Riley stood at 36 on the opposite edge of her bracemate with nice style. This brace ended with Riley standing at 55 off the western tree line near the entrance to the Dog Leg field with Holly backing. Time expired with running birds alluding the flushing attempts of Riley’s handler, who was instructed to shoot for her as time expired. Holly had the faster and snappier gait of the two putting together some flashy moves between finds; Riley remaining consistent in application and speed throughout the hour doing a very nice job. The judges awarded Holly 2nd Place and Riley 3rd Place for their efforts. Brace 8a Sweetwater Bud’s A Lone Star (Bud), Larry Bates Brace 8b Starlight’s Mercury Out Ryder (Ryder), Teresa Richmond This pair broke away from the western entrance to the Dog Leg field driving fast and forward to rim the field from opposite directions. At 5, Ryder stood along a grass edge with incredible style as his handler produced a Woodcock for him with all in order. After the shot, Bud appeared from the front as the pair continued downhill working the fields nicely. Upon entering the large field before the Boy Scout bridge, Ryder stood at 14 with Bud putting birds to flight and Ryder joining in the fun to end their bid. Brace 9a Newton de la Source d’Hannahatchee (Newt), Jackie Hutwagner Brace 9b Turning Point’s Shenanigans (Shandi), Mike Magnuson for Julie Nelson This brace broke away heading to the Boy Scout Bridge, with both dogs taking the left edge, with Newt going into the cover, and Shandi chasing a bird through the cover at 2. Newt came around the corner where Shandi just was and snapped to point on 5 birds still sitting under the bush to card his first find at 2 mins. Newt carded additional finds at 15, covey at 18, 23, covey at 38, 42, and finds with bobbles at 48 and 58 which knocked him out of contention. He ran hard, snappy and hunted well the entire time on the ground, making nice moves and definitely shaking things up prior to the bobbles. Brace 10a Dogwood’s Moose (Moose), Chris Logan - POSTED Brace 10b Waypoint Deacon of the Hunt (Deke), Thom Christnagel – POSTED Moose broke away fast and with a purpose from the start, working the terrain effectively to stand on a covey at 9 separating from his bracemate until 35. He had finds at 17 on a covey, 22, 26, 42 on small groups with his last find at 53 coming after a sweeping move to stand with lofty style on the bottom, off the middle tree line of the downhill field with Deke backing nicely. His run was fast, pattern forward to be found standing to the front several times with style and intensity on each find. The judges awarded Moose the title of 2023 NAWGDC to complete the set of 2023 NWGDC bookends! Deke ran a very nice hour with good range at a moderate and consistent pace. His pattern and application were commendable and pleasing to watch. He carded a nice find at 26, with three additional finds on the scattered covey at 28, 30, and 31. His final find came at 49 mins. on a covey at the exit of the Dog Leg field with nice style. Were it not for the covey kerfuffle, Deke would have most likely been in the placements. Brace 11a Atos (Atos), Jackie Hutwagner - POSTED Brace 11b Pretty Blue Eyes A Sweet Touch of Charlie B (Charlie), Bob Bakas Atos and Charlie broke away fast and furious attacking the cover in front of them with class and style. Unfortunately, Charlie was a bit too enthusiastic in his first encounter with game and was leashed at 8. Atos continued working fast and forward with sweeping moves throughout the hour with multiple stylish finds to the front. Those finds came at 7, 15, 32, 35, 41, 46 and 55 mins. and a stop to flush at 55 where he was standing frozen in the middle of a huge, scattered covey that continued lifting after Jackie shot and walked to collar Atos. He finished his hour at the exit of the Gun Dog Orchard; he’s a bird dog who relishes his job! The judges awarded Atos 4th place for his efforts. Brace 12a Copley-Sheltany Echo of Angels (Zoie), Connie Rodriguez Brace 12b Miss Behavin’ (Ivy), Dan Dodson This pair broke away making huge moves at a blazing pace. Zoie was way down along the bottom near the swamp edge and flying to the front, to bring it back across the front from right to left at was under a bird at 5 to end her bid. Ivy was more controlled, though equally as efficient in her coverage of the course. She adjusted her range to suit the course and cover presented and had an excellent pattern, hunting well throughout the hour; her last 15 mins. were a little erratic at times, but a solid performance overall. Her finds came at 9 on a large covey along the swamp edge below the Gun Dog parking lot, 22, 37, 42 and 57 mins., each with wonderful style and intensity. She’s an exciting dog to watch and has a lot of winning to do in her future. Brace 13a Cedar Glen Disruptin’ the Peace (Colt) – Billy Jones Brace 13b Over Under Reign The Field (Reign) – Ken Delong Colt has a very fluid and attractive gait, covering ground with great efficiency. His pattern and application were very nice, as was his style on point and while backing. He had nice finds at 5 and 14 mins. with backs at 8 and 20 mins. A bobble on his second back ended his day at 22. Reign ran hard and with very nice application and range, carding finds at 8, 14 and 20 mins. respectively. A bobble at 5 left a significant hole in her performance that would keep her out of the placements, so her handler elected to call it a day at 22 mins. Brace 14a Royal Flush Sir Oliver Twist (Ollie) – Dan Dodson BYE Ollie running alone, broke away fast and running hard, hitting the edge, and flying to the front to make game at 8 mins. where he ended his bid by putting birds to flight. 2023 Amateur Champion RFC FC AFC Dogwood’s Moose (FC Ringo Rascal x Dogwood’s Haley) o/Chris & Casey Logan h/Chris Logan, (D) Runner-up CH Over Under’s Kick It Out JH (NGDC GFC FC AFC Legacy’s Pine Bandit x CH Over Under’s Killin’ Time JH) o/Carlos & Eileen Gust h/Eileen Gust, (B) 3rd Place Romence’s Life of Riley JH (NGDC GFC FC Legacy’s Pine Bandit x McDuffee’s Creekside Girl) o/h/Julie Romence, (B) 4th Place GFC RFC FC AFC Atos (Gatsby dumas D’Eyraud x Lara del Cecchetto) o/John & Jackie Hutwagner h/Jackie Hutwagner (D) Honorable Mention FC AFC KDel’s Eagle Magnum Hotshot, o/h Ken Delong National Amateur Walking Gun Dog Championship Winners The American Brittany ▬ 18 ▬ January 2024

We had glorious weather for November. A huge shout out to Charles Lawrence for all his assistance in getting the RV parking organized and flawlessly taken care of on the grounds. This year we had the highest amount of RV & trailers on the grounds. On Tuesday we set up the ring with our new mats and fencing. A very special thank you to Terry Hilliard for the all the work put into the acquiring the mats & equipment. Anthony Morabito, Pat Crisler, Tim Smith & Charles Lawrence did a fantastic job getting everything laid out and those new mats looking great. Then all the lovely custom chairs that were purchased by the wonderful fund raiser that Terry Hilliard created. Many thanks to Deb Rudert for all her help during setup. The most exciting new area for the National was the exceptional Junior Program that was flawlessly put together by Kassie Hamaker, Andrea & Abbey Engler & Reva Pietrzak. The juniors had a luncheon on Friday and a scavenger hunt to get to know each other and other people in the breed. Friday evening there was a Junior’s Seminar with Karen Livingston, Amy Rodrigues, Colleen Walsh & Eileen Hackett working with the children. Saturday morning we had our Pee Wee competition judged by Dawn Droel with fun for all. A big shout out to Texas Coastal Brittany Club for their VERY generous donation! With goodwill and hard work, our Agility committee and all exhibitors held 5 Brittany only agility trials in 3 days with the 2023 National Specialty Show in Fort Smith, AR. We had a total of 18 handlers with 27 dogs entered in 263 runs for all trials. The NSS Agility Trial takes place on Sunday and every entered dog competes for High In Trial recognition. The speed, in yards per second, for each dog in both Standard and Jumpers classes are calculated and averaged. The dog with the highest average YPS is declared the High In Trial winner and is awarded the KAZE Memorial Trophy. The 2023 International Brittany Championships are in the books! This year, we added a Grand Amateur Limited Gun Dog Championship, held in memory of good friend, and Big Dog Ranch landowner Tommy Thomas. The series began on Tuesday March 28 with the GOLAA Championship, followed by the GOLGD Championship, GALAA Championship, and finally the GALGD Championship. There are so many people to thank for making this event possible. We’ll start with Nestle Purina for their very generous financial and product support! Thank you to Linda Thomas for allowing us to run on the beautiful Bird Dog Ranch. With a little help from Mother Nature, the grounds were in great condition! There aren’t enough words to say about the dedication and support that Darlene Dow and Ed Kostka show for our sport. Traveling all the way from Upstate New York to help out. Darlene spent the week before the event preparing meals for lunch. She also manned the dog wagon with Linda Thomas and had lunch ready for us each day. Ed Kostka was up every morning planting birds. With some new twists to the usual course, Ken Windom started the week as marshal. Anyone who has ever run a trial knows how hard it is to find judges these days. Conflicting events in this area of the country made it even more difficult. We would like to thank all our judges for their hours in the saddle and traveling to Iowa to make these events so successful. This year the Open All Age Championship was judged by John and Joanne Perry. The Open Gun Dog Championship was judged by Leroy Long and Burton Wice. Peter Coppens and Howard Burbach judged the Amateur All Age Championship. Howard and Tom Jageilski were in the saddle for the Amateur Gun Dog Championship. As can be expected, the wind here in south central Iowa didn’t disappoint. Tuesday mornings temperatures were a little chilly, but quickly warmed up. International Brittany Grand Open Limited All Age Championship. This year’s Champion was Scout Upland Trail Blazer, handled by Steve Chang and owned by Weldon Eberhart. The Runner up was Sniksoh Hank’s Hatch, owned by Adam Freeman and handled by Bob Burchett. Third place went to MK’s My Lil Ammo, handled by Scott Johnson for owner Nick Blasi. On Friday, severe weather was forecast for later in the day. We broke away as usual, but were watchful of our phones for alerts. The 3 morning braces were run, and we took a quick lunchbreak. Halfway through the 10th brace the judges made the decision to call the brace, to be resumed in the morning. Brace 7: Almaden’s Under Lock And Key “Oudi” - Tillson and Tequila Chica Bonita “Chica” - Beaver. Oudi went on point in the alfalfa field after the barn, but no bird was located. Oudi was sent on and had a find on the left edge after we went through the next crossing. Chica had 2 finds on the north side; by the hay bales on the north side of the alfalfa field and in the draw before the creek crossing. Both dogs had a difficult time with the strong south wind as we headed back toward camp and crossed the road. Both dogs were found standing on the headrow below the keyhole. Oudi had another find on the east end of the next hedgerow and both dogs finished well as moved east along the south side. Brace 8: MK’s My Lil Classic “Nova” - Johnson and Sovereign’s Judge And Jury - “JJ’’ - Burchett. Broke from the second gate on the south side. The dogs headed toward the church corner, but quickly turned north with the tail wind getting stronger. We paused at the keyhole, neither dog in sight. Point was called for both dogs who were standing in different locations on the draw below the keyhole. As was in order for JJ and Nova was leashed. JJ scored 2 more finds on the south side. As we headed across the road and through the double ditch crossing JJ had trouble with the wind as it began blowing even stronger. He pointed a dead bird by the old barn and finished her hour with 2 more finds in the alfalfa field. Brace 9: Roan Survivor “Rey” - Perry and Big Canyon Chasing The Rising Bar “Cam” - Johnson. Broke at the gate in the north west corner. The wind was getting more difficult to handle. Cam was picked up at camp. Rey was taken across the road and pointed a turkey by the all age breakaway. Rey continued until the keyhole where she was leashed by her handler after a second find on a pile of feathers. Brace 10: Wingra’s Indy Go! “Indy” - Tillson and Detroit Rascal’s Son Of A Gun “Cobo” - Burchett. Cobo was leashed early. Indy had 1 find before he finished the north side of the course. With Tornado warnings predicted, the judges made the call to resume the 24 minutes remaining in the brace the next day. Everyone safely road out the storms that included lightening, hail and high winds and we started the next morning at the road crossing. Indy had another find and finished down by Jimmy’s house. Brace 11: HVK Turns Back Time “Mick” - Tillson was scratched. My Lil Classic Mercedes “Cedes” - Cedes was run with Sovereign’s Hanky Panky “Ollie” - Burchett. Breaking from Jimmy’s house on the south side, both dogs started well. At the church corner, Ollie was leashed for stealing point. Cedes finished the hour with 3 finds. International Brittany Grand Amateur Limited All Age Championship This year’s Champion was Tequila Chica Bonita, owned by Amanda and Richard Beaver, handled by Richard. Runner up honors went to Roan Survivor, owned by Joanne and John Perry, handled by Joanne. The third place finisher was Arrow’s Tequila Rustler, handled by Richard Beaver for owner Sandy Becker. Rounding out the field was 4th place finisher Sniksoh Hank’s Hatch for owner handler Adam Freeman. We thank Joanne Perry for reporting this Championship! Brace 1: Sniksoh Hank’s Hatch - Freeman and Jewell - Heiter. Cloudy, windy conditions with temperatures in the 40’s prevailed as we started the stake around midday. Hank ran a consistent race with 3 stylish finds. Jewell went missing at about 25 minutes and Garmin was called. Brace 2: TJ’s Black Diamond - Perry and Hurricane Banjo - Parmenter. Breaking from the far south side. At 33, Coal pointed at a hawk kill. He went on to have a non-productive at 51 and a stylish find at 59. Banjo had a clean find at 20 and was leashed at 35. Brace 3: ANJ’s Ohio Hellion - Poehler and Hehi’s Rambing Roscoe - Healey. Hank ran a strong, wide race. He had finds at 33 and 56, with a hard mark on the second find. Roscoe started strong, having birds way too early for this young dog. Brace 4: Dogwood’s Fireball Whizki - Parmenter and Roan Survivor - Perry. Whiski went out of pocket and Garmin was called for early in the brace. Rey had a consistent, hard driving forward race with 4 stylish finds. She went missing at time and was retrieved from the front within the grace period. The American Brittany ▬ 35 ▬ January 2024

Brace 5: Arrow’s Tequila Rustler - Beaver and Hehi’s Slim ChipleyHealey. These two seasoned veterans went quickly to work. At 19, Rusty backed Slim at the church corner. Rusty had a find below the keyhole at 21 and stayed forward through the hour. Slim had 3 more finds, but at a shorter range. Brace 6: Tequila Chica Bonita - Beaver and Kid’s Royal CaseyHeiter. Starting on the south side of the course, these 2 were into birds quickly, sharing a find at 2minutes. After the find, Chica increased her range and had 3 more very stylish finds. She ended the hour strong. Casey had another find at 27, but had a breach of manners at 55. Brace 7: My Lil Classic Mercedes - Beaver and Jagoub’s Spell Caster - Jagielski. Shortly after breal<away, Tabu was leashed for failing to back Cedes’ first find. Cedes had a second find at 4 minutes. She was not pleasing her handler at the halfway mark and returned to the wagon. Brace 8: Pearl - Heiter. Pearl had finds at 5 and 21, but handler opted to pick up before the hour. International Brittany Grand Amateur Limited Gun Dog Championship: Tommy Thomas Memorial Amateur Gun Dog Championship We’d like to thank Teresa Richmond (braces 1-3) and Julie Nelson (braces 4-7) for reporting! Winner of the Inaugural Tommy Thomas Memorial Amateur Gun Dog Championship was My Lil Classic Mercedes, owned by Amanda and Richard Beaver, handled by Richard. Runner up was FC Diamond Hill Dangerous Big Bang for owner handler Lisa Pollock. The third place finisher was NAWGDC/DC/GFC/AFC Starlight’s Mercury Out Ryder, owner handler Teresa Richmond. Fourth place finisher was NGDC/DC/GFC Turning Points Shenanigans for owner handler Julie Nelson. The winner was presented with a commemorative belt buckle in a “lunchbox”! DAY 1 Brace 1: Saradac’s Diamond Facet - Lisa Pollock/Turning Points Shenanigans - Julie Nelson We broke away at 8:33 on a very cold day. Both dogs had a great breakaway, both moving up through the orchard with good speed. Point was called but both dogs moved on. Both dogs pointed at 12 in 2 different areas at back of alfalfa field. Both dogs were still down and moving well. At 27, scout called point for JoJo on the west end of the pond on the northwest corner, all in order. Shandi had a second find at 30, all was good. Shandi made nice moves back through the orchard. Lisa’s dog liked the back corner but started moving along the bottom. Lisa’s dog was picked up at the road. Shandi had a third find at 53 and finished the hour strong going forward. Brace 2: Tequila Chica Bonita - Richard Beaver/TJ’s Black Diamond - John Perry broke away at 9:41. Both dogs had big breakaways with Chica going a little back and finally moving along with us. We are running the all-age course backwards. Chica had a find at 11 just before the keyhole. Both dogs making big moves crossing the road and going into the orchard. Scouts out looking for both dogs. Chica had her second find just before the double gates at 49, all in order. Coal had a find at 57 off to the side of the alfalfa field. Chica had a NP at 59. Time was called with both dogs ahead. Brace 3: My Lil Classic Mercedes - Richard Beaver/Turning Points Rolling in The Deep - Julie Nelson Breal< away for both dogs was forward, both making nice moves. At 43, there was a divided find, all in order. As we came up on the next stop, it appeared to be Hannah pointing and Cedes backing. Hannah had actually moved ahead of Cedes and was up after the flush. Cedes moved on and finished the hour with an easy handle and forward strong. DAY 2 Today broke as a moderate day with brisk temperatures and stiff southerly winds gusting at times to 40mph. Our judges, Howard Burbach and Tom Jagielski paid close attention to all of the details of each dog so as to most fairly judge each dog based solely on its individual performance. So much attention to detail that they shared with me at times comments about the movement of the grasses, the swirling stiff winds as they came over a small rise in the terrain and how that would impact the dog’s ability to catch scent and even nice complements about the dogs at times. When placements were given judge Howard Burbach complimented the dogs in the stake and reminded each of us to keep Tommy forever in our hearts and to cherish the memories we have of him. Brace 4: Starlight’s Mercury Outrider (Rider) - Teresa Richmond and Diamond Hill Ain’t My Fault (Scout) - Lisa Pollock The American Brittany ▬ 36 ▬ January 2024

brook away at 8:33 heading north from camp with both dogs making solid casts to the front. After the double rock crossing, both dogs were making big moves and we hadn’t seen Rider since just before the crossing. Teresa continued to move confidently forward only to be rewarded by finding Rider standing solidly on point at the top of the hill east of the old barn. Rider had his second find along one of the draws on the far north side of the course. After crawling through the ditch, Teresa was able to put the bird up and all was in order. Rejoining Lisa with Scout we found Scout on point and Rider standing staunchly backing her in the draw east of the gun dog gate on the far west side of the course. A bird was produced and all was in order. As we were approaching the gate nearest to camp to cross the road, Scout was seen under a pheasant ending her run for the day. Rider continued on but shortened up a bit on the south side of the road. Rider’s final find was in the draw as we approached the key hole. Rider place third. Brace 5: Diamond Hill Dangerous Dark Side (Borden) - Lisa Pollock and Pretty Blue Eyes A Sweet Touch of Charlie B (Charlie) - Bob Bal<as broke away at 9:45am at the gates along the far south side of the course. Moving east both dogs were really moving. Together they took a hard left as we headed east. Charlie got gathered up after a minute or two and point was called on Borden. There was an indiscretion on the bird ending Borden’s run for the day. On the far west side of the course Charlie continued west taking scout, Mike Poehler for an extensive ride. As they rejoined us, we were heading for the key hole treeline and Charlie established a very handsome point. As the birds rose into flight, Charlie took a few too many steps to remain in the hunt for the day ending his run. Brace 6: Sovereign’s Legendary Cowboy (Duke) - Matt Weldele and Red Granite’s Henry Will Be a Star (Henry) - Bob Bakas broke away at 10:49am from camp heading north toward the orchard. These two dogs looked lovely running and working together. Both had lovely application. At one of the draws on the far north side of the course along the road, Duke established point and when Matt flushed Duke had an indiscretion on the bird ending his bid for a placement today. Henry was moving swiftly to the front and was found standing in the draw east of the gun dog gate. As Bob went in to flush the bird, Henry laid down ending his bid for a placement today. Brace 7: Starlight’s Callisto Moon (Cal) -Teresa Richmond and Diamond Hill Dangerous Big Bang (Leonard) - Lisa Pollock broke away from the gun dog gate at 11:23 am heading east. Within 1 minute of breaking away, point was called on Cal and a bird was produced with all in order. Cal continued making big reaching forward moves as he rimmed the fields. Meanwhile Leonard was animated and energetic as he continued forward working nicely for Lisa. Along the south side of the course, Leonard was found standing as Cal came in to establish point in front of him ending his bid for a placement today. The bird was produced and Leonard was taken on. As we approached the key hole, Leonard worked the scent to hit a hard point on the berm running east to west south of the key hole. The bird was produced and all was in order. As we were moving along the far west side of the course, Leonard was found standing along a tree line with all in order as the bird lifted. Nearing the end of his hour, Leonard moved with intelligence with the same snap and speed to his gate as he rimmed the field southwest of the key hole. As time was called, Lisa found Leonard standing staunchly. The bird was flushed and all was in order to wit Leonard was swept up into Lisa’s arms to kisses and hugs of approval for a job well done. Leonard was awarded second place for his performance today. International Brittany Grand Open Limited All Age Championship Judges: John Perry, Joanne Perry | 26 starters 1. General Appearance A compact, closely knit dog of medium size, a leggy dog having the appearance, as well as the agility, of a great ground coverer. Strong, vigorous, energetic and quick of movement. Ruggedness, without clumsiness, is a characteristic of the breed. He can be tailess or has a tail docked to approximately four inches. Size, Proportion, Substance Height: 17 1/2 to 20 1/2 inches, measured from the ground to the highest point of the shoulders. Any Brittany measuring under 17 1/2 inches or over 20 1/2 inches shall be disqualified from dog show competition. Weight: Should weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. Proportion: So leggy is he that his height at the shoulders is the same as the length of his body. Body Length: Approximately the same as the height when measured at the shoulders. Body length is measured from the point of the forechest to the rear of the rump. A long body should be heavily penalized. Substance: Not too light in bone, yet never heavyboned and cumbersome. Head Expression: Alert and eager, but with the soft expression of a bird dog. Eyes: Well set in head. Well protected from briars by a heavy, expressive eyebrow. A prominent, full or pop eye should be heavily penalized. It is a serious fault in a dog that must face briars. Skull well chiseled under the eyes, so that the lower lid is not pulled back to form a pocket or haw that would catch seeds, dirt and weed dust. Preference should be for the darker colored eyes, though lighter shades of amber should not be penalized. Light and mean-looking eyes should be heavily penalized. Ears: Set high, above the level of the eyes. Short and triangular, rather than pendulous, reaching about half the length of the muzzle. Should lie flat and close to the head, with the tip rounded very slightly. Ears well covered with dense, but relatively short hair, and with little fringe. Skull: Medium length, rounded, very slightly wedgeshaped, but evenly made. Width, not quite as wide as the length and never so broad as to appear coarse, or so narrow as to appear racy. Well defined but gently sloping stop. Median line rather indistinct. The occiput only apparent to the touch. Lateral walls well rounded. The Brittany should never be “apple-headed” and he should never have an indented stop. Muzzle: Medium length, about two-thirds the length of the skull, measuring the muzzle from the tip to the stop, and the skull from the occiput to the stop. Muzzle should taper gradually in both horizontal and vertical dimensions as it approaches the nostrils. Neither a Roman nose nor a dish-face is desirable. Never broad, heavy or snipy. Nose: Nostrils well open to permit deep breathing of air and adequate scenting. Tight nostrils should be penalized. Never shiny. Color: fawn, tan, shades of brown or deep pink. A black nose is a disqualification. A two-tone or butterfly nose should be penalized. Lips: Tight, the upper lip overlapping the lower jaw just to cover the lower lip. Lips dry, so that feathers will not stick. Drooling to be heavily penalized. Flews to be penalized. Bite: A true scissors bite. Overshot or undershot jaw to be heavily penalized. Neck, Topline, Body Neck: Medium length. Free from throatiness, though not a serious fault unless accompanied by dewlaps, strong without giving the impression of being over-muscled. Well set into sloping shoulders. Never concave or ewe-necked. Topline: Slight slope from the highest point of the shoulders to the root of the tail. Chest: Deep, reaching the level of the elbow. Neither so wide nor so rounded as to disturb the placement of the shoulders and elbows. Ribs well sprung. Adequate heart room provided by depth as well as width. Narrow or slab-sided chests area fault. Back: Short and straight. Never hollow, saddle, sway or roach backed. Slight drop from the hips to the root of the tail. Flanks: Rounded. Fairly full. Not extremely tucked up, or flabby and falling. Loins short and strong. Distance from last rib to upper thigh short, about three to four fingers widths. Narrow and weak loins are a fault. In motion, the loin should not sway sideways, giving a zig-zag motion to the back, wasting energy. Tail: Tailless to approximately four inches, natural or docked. The tail not to be so long as to affect the over-all balance of the dog. Set on high, actually an extension of the spine at about the same level. Any tail substantially more than four inches shall be severely penalized. Forequarters Shoulders: Shoulder blades should not protrude too much, not too wide apart, with perhaps two thumbs’ width between. Sloping and muscular. Blade and upper arm should form nearly a ninety degree angle. Straight shoulders are a fault. At the shoulders the Brittany is slightly higher than at the rump. Front Legs: Viewed from the front, perpendicular, but not set too wide. Elbows and feet turning neither in nor out. Pasterns slightly sloped. Down in pasterns is a serious fault. Leg bones clean, graceful, but not too fine. Extremely heavy bone is as much a fault as spindly legs. One must look for substance and suppleness. Height at elbows should approximately equal distance from elbow to withers. Feet: Should be strong, proportionately smaller than the spaniels’, with close fitting, well arched toes and thick pads. The Brittany is “not up on his toes.” Toes not heavily feathered. Flat feet, splayed feet, paper feet, etc., are to be heavily penalized. An ideal foot is halfway between the hare and the cat foot. Dewclaws may be removed. Hindquarters Broad strong and muscular, with powerful thighs and well bent stifles, giving the angulation necessary for powerful drive. Hind Legs: Stifles well bent. The stifle should not be so angulated as to place the hock joint far out behind the dog. A Brittany should not be condemned for straight stifle until the judge has checked the dog in motion from the side. The stifle joint should not turn out making a cowhock. Thighs well feathered but not profusely, halfway to the hock. Hocks, that is, the back pasterns, should be moderately short, pointing neither in nor out, perpendicular when viewed from the side. They should be firm when shaken by the judge. Feet: Same as front feet. Coat Dense, flat or wavy, never curly. Texture neither wiry nor silky. Ears should carry little fringe. The front and hind legs should have some feathering, but too little is definitely preferable to too much. Dogs with long or profuse feathering or furnishings shall be so severely penalized as to effectively eliminate them from competition. Skin: Fine and fairly loose. A loose skin rolls with briars and sticks, thus diminishing punctures or tearing. A skin so loose as to form pouches is undesirable. Color Orange and white or liver and white in either clear or roan patterns. Some ticking is desirable. The orange or liver is found in the standard parti-color or piebald patterns. Washed out colors are not desirable. Tricolors are allowed but not preferred. A tri-color is a liver and white dog with classic orange markings on eyebrows, muzzle and cheeks, inside the ears and under the tail, freckles on the lower legs are orange. Anything exceeding the limits of these marking shall be severely penalized. Black is a disqualification. Gait When at a trot the Brittany’s hind foot should step into or beyond the print left by the front foot. Clean movement, coming and going, is very important, but most important is side gait, which is smooth, efficient and ground covering. Temperament A happy, alert dog, neither mean nor shy. Disqualifications Any Brittany measuring under 17 1/2 inches or over 20 1/2 inches. Black in the coat. A black nose. The Breed Standard This Standard was approved by the AKC on April 9, 1990 and went into effect May 29, 1990. The American Brittany ▬ 47 ▬ January 2024
