Time is sure flying by this year! We had our Board Meeting over Zoom in January rather than traveling. Look for the minutes in the Members Only section of our website soon. Our nominating committee provided a slate for our 2024 election. We did not have anyone run from the floor so we will not have an election. Please join me in welcoming Fred Lowry as our one new board member replacing Helen Joyce as our SE Director. Fred is not a stranger to volunteering to help out the GSPCA. He has served as our Hall of Fame for People Chairman for a substantial period of time. He is also a video star! He volunteered along with former Board member Katie Tazza to be a part of the AKC Meet the Breeds in the Field video for pointing breeds. Be sure to check it out via the AKC website. Saying hello also means saying goodbye. I want to thank Helen Joyce for her time on the GSPCA board. I have always admired Helen’s balanced and unbiased approach to the decisions we as a board have to make. I wish her nothing but the best to her in her ongoing pursuits. I also want to thank the board members who have once again agreed to continue their service to the GSPCA. I can say each that each one of my fellow board members care deeply about our breed and the GSPCA. It takes dedication and time and effort and our breed is lucky to have each of them. Our first National event is less than a month away. The National Amateur Gun Dog Championship is being held in Pinckneyville, IL from April 12th to conclusion. I will be there and hope to get a chance to catch up with a number of you there. Look for the results and write up in the May/June Journal. Coming right behind is our National Specialty Show in May. This year it will be held in East Peoria, IL. I will be there as well so please be sure to say hi if you are attending. We have our Annual Awards banquet on Saturday night. It is an honor for me to recognize the winners from the prior year. Enjoy the early Spring, and as always please feel free to reach out to me or any members of the Board. Lynn UPDATE ON THE ELECTIONS 7 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

Please consider voting for me as I am dedicated to the breed and to the club and will not disappoint the board or our membership. Regards, Karen Rooks Nauer RN MBA RECORDING SECRETARY, MELISSA CAMPBELL For new members who may not know me let me introduce myself. My name is Melissa Campbell, and I am running for the position of Recording Secretary. I am just finishing up my second term as the current Recording Secretary. I started my love of this breed in the place I was needed most, GSP Rescue. My involvement with rescue has been such a rewarding experience. I support rescue when time allows and run the rescue table at the GSPCA NSS. Rescue led me to get involved with conformation and my first show dog. Over the years I have expanded into different venues and have placed and or titled GSPs in conformation, hunt testing, and field trials. In my personal life, I am married to a wonderful man who supports my passion for GSPs. We currently share our home with 6 GSPs and a rescue Great Dane. We have raised 6 kids together and now enjoy our 6 grandchildren whenever possible. We are also Breeders of Merit and have produced some lovely shorthairs under the Lakota Hills kennel name who are competing and are successful in multiple venues (show, field, and performance). My time spent to date as your Recording Secretary has been enriching and a huge learning experience. My responsibilities have allowed me to gain a greater understanding of all the hard work the board and various committees do to help run the GSPCA for the entire membership. I have had the opportunity to learn so many things and hope to continue to learn and grow in the role to better serve the club and membership. I currently sit on the National Specialty Committee, NAGDC, and the NFT Vice President: Karen Nauer Recording Secretary: Melissa Campbell South East Director: Fred Lowry South Central Director: Vanessa Carmean East Central Director: Becky Feigh Northwest Director: Dominic Pettinato I have enjoyed my first term as Vice President. I attended all the BOD meetings, the NSS and the NFT. I believe I am well positioned to proactively communicate and interact with the GSPCA membership – I have a lifetime of involvement with the breed. I have many years of being in executive meetings and capturing key information and providing on the spot input as well as documenting and communicating results to others. My participation in a variety of activities including conformation, hunt tests, agility, tracking, obedience and AKC Conformation judging – providing the depth and breadth of knowledge an officer should have to represent our diverse membership. I am confident I have the skills to provide constructive feedback during BOD meetings and represent the interests of the breed and our GSPCA members. My strong belief in regular communication about AKC rules and proposed rule changes in multiple sports, health issues with the GSPCA Board, GSPCA members, and use of our club’s tools such as the GSPCA website and Journal, make me well qualified for the task. Many members miss an opportunity to provide feedback if they are not aware the BOD is seeking feedback on proposed changes. Maintaining a strong GSPCA depends on the GSPCA reflecting the needs of members in all venues. My involvement with GSPs began in 1963. Communication and organization are key to my success as a GSP person and my career outside of GSPs with an MBA and strong business acumen. I have been an active volunteer for the GSPCA for many years including my current duties as the Vice President, AKC Delegate, former Chairperson for the Health & Welfare Committee and as a former member of the NSS Committee. My proudest accomplishment was leading the GSPCA Health & Welfare Committee and members in raising over $100,000 for hemangiosarcoma research and over $30,000 for Epilepsy research. Committee and have been involved in planning to help make our national events not only fun events but ones that more and more people want to attend. I want to thank the nominating committee for their confidence in including me in the 2024 elections. If allowed to serve another term I promise to continue representing the entire membership. I believe the club belongs to all members and all members should have a say in the future of our breed. I am open to questions and can be reached via email at lakotahillsgsp@gmail. com or [email protected]. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the GSPCA membership. FRED W. LOWRY, JR. SOUTHEAST DIRECTOR My first exposure to the German Shorthaired Pointer was in 1963. My aunt and uncle got their first GSP while he was in the Army. I later enjoyed hunting quail over these dogs on the family farm. When I graduated college in 1980, I bought my first Shorthair, the first of many. At that time, there were still some coveys left to hunt in North Carolina. I have owned many GSP’s and have had multiple litters. I was able to purchase a nice Rugerheim bitch in 1998. I trained her to hunt ducks and geese since quail were scarce. She later was finished as an FC by Terry Chandler. I then linebred her to a Dual Champion which produced DC Lowrys Eagle Ridge v Rugerheim (Buster) that has produced 5 Duals, 7 Champions, 1 AFC, 1, FC and was DC Sire of the year 2013, 2014, & 2015. I have also co-owned 2 other Dual Champions. I have been a Field Trial Judge since 2010 and have trained and finished some of my breeding line in the field. I have also competed one year at Eureka in the futurity. In 2012, I started the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of NC which is still a very active club. I have also tried my hand at show handling. My first show debut was at the NSS in Virginia where I handled Buster in the Senior class. I must say that I appreciate a good show handler of which I amcurrently not. I have also acted as the GSPCA Hall of Fame chairman and have been a member of the GSPCA for over 20 years. I look forward to representing the GSPCA in the Southeast as Director. Fred W. Lowry, Jr. | P: 704-880-5031 636 Morgan Ford Rd., Statesville, NC 28625 VANESSA CARMEAN SOUTH CENTRAL DIRECTOR: I am Vanessa Carmean and I am currently the South Central Director and am running to stay in the position of South Central Director. I am very active with our local GSP clubs in show, field trial and hunt tests. For the last 9 years, I have been active members of three pointing breed clubs in my area as well as the Gulf Coast GSP Club. Within these clubs, I’ve held multiple voted positions from Club Secretary to Board Member for multiple years. At a national level, on top of being your current South Central Director, I have volunteered with the GSPCA National Show Specialty (NSS) Merchandise Committee for 4yrs and with the NSS Awards Events in 2021, as well as, attended and competed at the NSS 4 yrs in a row. I have also attended and competed 2 years at the GSPCA National Field Trial in Eureka, KS in both horseback and walking. I have volunteered as on the executive committee for the National Amateur Gun Dog Championship in Pinckneyville, IL the last 3yrs and have been Hospitality Chair on that committee last 2 years. I am not only hospitality chair this year, but also chairing the 2024 event, running the raffle and cooking all the meals! Come join us! I have volunteered and competed at the GSPCA National Amateur Gun Dog Championship the last 3yrs and have had a dog place in the top four dogs last year! All of these positions, roles and volunteer opportunities have allowed me to continue to be a great South Central Director. I am also the liaison for the GSPCA Water Tests as well as have personally held 2 water tests in 2023 in my SC area. In 2023, as the liaison for Illustrated Standard, we worked hard on getting the new standard approved to add black and update the Breed Education. The last two years, as the current Director, I have focused on getting more information out to my area members. Communication is key. I have also volunteered at many of my South Central Region club’s events, in many capacities including all areas of performance, hunt test and field trial, companion events including obedience, rally and dock diving. I also recently traveled to the west coast to judge a sweepstakes event for a GSP specialty. I helped to coordinate the Meet the Breed in Dallas, TX. It was attended by myself and 3 other GSPCA Members for two full days. I pride my time management skills. Even with all of this volunteering, I recently finished our second Dual Champion in 2022 and have finished my puppy in the show ring obtaining her Championship at a year old. She will be running in her first field trial to get her puppy points in Nov 2023. 9 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

I continue to be an advocate in our region for celebrating Duals, as its the bridge between the field events and the show events. In the sporting dog world, there are very few breeds where owners can compete and win in both the field and show venues with the same dog. The Dual GSP represents a “single breed” where as many of the other sporting dogs cannot offer the same versatility. I also actively compete in AKC Obedience, Rally and Dock Diving with my puppy and she recently qualified for dock diving regionals in June 2023. My experience and support of members goes far beyond just field work. I want to continue to compete with our dogs in all these venues, as so many other people do not understand the versatility of our breed. I believe we need to continue to offer support and guidance for our members who do not compete in events and just want to volunteer. Thank you for considering me to continue to serve as your representative in the position of SC Director. I would love to continue this service with honor. Vanessa W Carmean | e: [email protected] 9203 Gammon Oaks Dr, Houston, TX 77095 BECKY FEIGH EAST CENTRAL DIRECTOR Allow me to re-introduce myself to the members. My name is Becky Feigh and I have been the GSPCA East Central Director since 2018. I reside in Carmel, Indiana with my husband and 3 German Shorthaired Pointers. My husband and I have been GSPCA members since 1998. My professional background consists of being a Senior Project Manager for a large civil & environmental engineering firm. In my spare time, I am active in AKC Hunt Tests, Conformation, Obedience, Rally, and Scent Work. In the past I was also very active with our local 4H County Dog Project as one of the Showmanship Leaders and in 2019 I obtained my provisional status to judge AKC All-breed Junior Showmanship. I am proud to say I personally handle and train my own dogs in all of the events our family participates in with some good successes and some not so good outcomes! I am proud to have handled the 1st German Shorthaired Pointer to earn their AKC Scent Work Master Elite title! I currently serve as the BOD Liaison for the National Executive Show Committee (NSSEC), Juniors Committee, Registry of Merit, Meet The Breeds and the Website. As stated before, one of the reasons I was interested in running for the board was to improve the flow of information and transparency of activities going on within the GSPCA. I wish to continue this task along with assisting other Board Members bringing the club forward with using updated technology to reflect current times. It is time to take advantage of technology and use it to improve the Club’s overall position. My goals for the next two years is to continue to help the Juniors Committee to expand and encourage more involvement with Junior members and develop a Junior Versatility Recognition Program for the GSPCA. Another task I would like to tackle is to assist the website master in continuing the website transition and expanding the website to offer greater opportunities for the membership. This is no small task if you have really looked at the amount of information on the website. I want to continue to be the voice for my region and be able to bring comments, questions or concerns from my regional members and Local Clubs to the GSPCA Board. I would welcome the opportunity to again represent the East Central SectionIndiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee and would greatly appreciate your support! DOMINIC PETTINATO NORTHWEST DIRECTOR Hello Northwest Folks! I am running again to be your director for the GSPCA. I have really enjoyed my last two years as your director. I have learned a lot from you and from the position. For those of you that are new to me, I have lived in California for most of my life. I have been married for 35 years to my wife, Lynn Pettinato, who is also your Corresponding Secretary. We have two grown children, Joe and Amanda. We are owned by 3 German Shorthaired Pointers, Tori, Jet and new addition, Libby, but have owned shorthairs for about 25 years now. I previously was a director and President of our local club, the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Northern Sacramento Valley. I have been an AKC judge for hunt tests in field trials for about 20 years. In the last couple of years as your director, I have attended National Specialty Shows in Maryland and Peoria and served as delegate for my local club. I attended the National Field Trial in Eureka, Kansas and was a delegate for my local club to that as well. While at the National Field Trial, I was able to meet some new folks that I hadn’t in the past and it really added a great perspective to my position on the board. I serve as liaison to the Judge’s Education committee with Maxine Moinier as well. I would be proud to continue to serve the Northwest again for another two years. Please consider me when you go to vote. Thank you, Dominic Pettinato 10 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

For decades, people thought dogs live as though they are in an old black and white movie, unable to distinguish colors. It seems that it must be a ho-hum world indeed. Poor Fido can’t even enjoy that handsome winter sweater we so carefully picked out for his days at the dog park. And what about that fancy blue ball he loves to fetch? Is it merely a dim gray orb lolling about in bleak gray grass? Well, not quite. Can Dogs See Colors? Until rather recently, the 1990s in fact, it was thought that dogs could not see color at all. After advanced research, science has come to find that a dog’s retinas actually do contain the color-sensitive photoreceptors called cones. So, dogs can see color. However, they have only two types of cones in their retinas, while humans have three. Dogs probably see the world in much the same way as a person who has red-green colorblindness does. The following graph (courtesy of Dr. Mark Plonsky PHD, University of Wisconson, Stevens Point) is a wonderful and easy-to-read example of how your dog’s vision compares to our human vision: More Interesting Information About Dog Vision Just because we can see more colors than our canine pals doesn’t mean that they don’t have other advantages in the area of eyesight. This is because, along with cones, dogs’ retinas also contains rods, and they have more rod cells than we do. Having more rods allows dogs to see better than us in dim light, have a greater ability to distinguish differing shades of gray, and detect motion better than we can. Dogs are near-sighted and do not see clearly at distances of more than 20 feet. So, while they are able to detect movement at great distances, they don’t have the ability to differentiate between a person and a small tree until they are closer. References: 1. 1. Plonsky, M. Through this chart, we can see that certain colors are indistinguishable to dogs, and colors look less rich and vibrant to them. Red looks brownish-grey or brownish-black, and orange, green, and yellow all look yellow. Your dog is able to see the color blue, but purple also looks blue. 10 THINGS ONLY A GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER OWNER WOULD UNDERSTAND AKC.org | AKC Staff They’re a versatile sporting dog breed, retrievers on land or water, and of course, they’re the most affectionate of companions. What’s not to love about the German Shorthaired Pointer? You know a GSP when you see one and if you own one, there are certain statements that ring all too true. Check out these ten things that only GSP owners will understand. 1. Your striking dog can do it all. He has boundless energy and can keep going and going. Sometimes, it’s hard to keep up. 2. There’s nothing you throw that your dog won’t retrieve. Your GSP has the strongest retriever instincts and he learned how to fetch as a puppy almost instantly. 3. Well, they’ve got you covered…with hair that is. If you’re wearing white, your dog will get his brown hair on you. If you’re wearing something dark, he’ll get white on you. You can’t win…and therefore you own a ton of lint rollers. 4. Your dog is a Velcro companion. You bonded immediately and he loves to go wherever you go: hiking, swimming, anywhere. 5. The movement of your dog’s tail can tell tales! Whatever he’s feeling, especially pure joy and excitement, you can tell from that tail. 6. Nothing gets past your dog’s nose. Not only is he highly intelligent, but he’s got an incredible power of scent. Whether he’s sniffing out during a hunt or smelling what you’re having for dinner, his nose knows all. 7. Food is the ultimate reward for your GSP. He’s super smart and willing to please you…especially when you have a nice snack to share. 8. They’re called pointers for a reason. Any GSP owner has seen their dog in the pointer pose. 9. You’re used to short and sweet training sessions with your dog. He’s brilliant, but needs time to rest after giving complete focus. 10. You think you’ve seen weird dog sleeping positions? Not compared to what a GSP owner sees everyday! Your GSP will sleep curled in a ball, sprawled out on his back, you name it Photo courtesy of Toni Boyd, AKC Breeder of Merit Photo courtesy of Sandra Maks, AKC Breeder of Merit Photo courtesy of Kirsten Fulk, AKC Breeder of Merit 15 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

The GSPCMN Winter Specialties returned once again, with participants sporting plaid and bravely venturing out in the newly turned frigid winter weather. The event was held once again indoors at Total Recall School for Dogs in Hugo, MN. The day started with a GSP Rally and Obedience Trial judged by Karen Anderson. Late morning started Specialty Show #1, judged by respectable breeder judge Karen Nauer from Colorado. After the lunch break, a Pee Wee special attraction was held for children ages 5-9 years old. Specialty #2 followed, judged by Sharon Ann Redmer. Both specialties started with a Juniors competition that featured 5 very talented junior GSP handlers. Our total entry on Friday included 32 Conformation Dogs, 6 Obedience Dogs, 5 Juniors, and 8 Pee Wees. Great prizes were awarded including handmade large fleece blankets, dog beds, plaid themed dog toys, and more! Juniors awards included some educational books this year as well as other great dog related items. We want to send a very heartfelt thank you out to our sponsors this year! We could not have offered these great prizes without your help and support! We also had another successful raffle with many great prize donations! Thank you to everyone who supported our raffle! Following the Friday Specialties was our annual winter all breed obedience and rally trials. We featured a GSP specialty in all classes, awarding separate GSP placings and awards for each class. Check out our high in trial, high combined and high triple scoring winners below! Wild & Uncurried Creations was our Friday Specialty photographer and did a great job with our win and ring side photos. Win photos were sent to winners as part our placement awards. Katrin “Katie” Tazza and her family owned their first German Shorthaired pointer in 1972. While attending college, Katrin obtained a GSP bitch named, Grass Roots Abigail. Katie put a CD title on Abigail and in 1974 produced a litter of puppies. One of those puppies (Ch Higgins Up N’Adam UD) introduced Katrin to the conformation show ring. A desire to improve her breeding stock prompted Katrin to obtained a finely bred GSP from John and Helen Herring. This lovely bitch Ch. Up N’Adam’s Windsong Mariah CDX, was an award-winning producer and became Up N’Adam’s foundation bitch. Since 1974 Up N’Adam bred dogs have been awarded over 360 titles. Those titles include 23 Dual Champions, 28 Field Champions, 16 Amateur Field Champions, 99 Show Champions. 4 Grand Champions. 25 Companion Dogs, 9 Companion Dog Excellent, 4 Utility Dog, 6 Utility Dog Excellent, Obedience Grand Master 9, Obedience Trial Champion, 1 Tracking Dog,1 Therapy dog, 75 Junior Hunters, 1 Junior Hunter retriever, 27 Senior Hunters, 8 Master Hunters, 5 Versatility VCX, VCA, VC. Other prestigious accomplishments include: 2 Up N’Adam dogs are in the GSPCA Hall of Fame, National Amateur Field Champion, National Open Gun Dog Champion, National Specialty Show Best of Breed, National Specialty Best in Sweeps, Open Limited Gun Dog of the Year, Amateur Gun Dog of the Year, Top Ten Field, Multiple - Dual Producing Dam and Sire of the Year. Those are just the Up N’Adam title awards! In addition to producing award winning dogs, Katrin Tazza has worked through the decades promoting good sportsmanship, health and welfare while demonstrating a commitment to various local and national clubs including judging. Perhaps Up N’Adam kennels is best known for producing Dual Champions. Pursuing titles in both Conformation and Field Trialing ensures the preservation of the natural ability, versatility and biddability the GSP is so well known for. Janet Chandler got her first German Shorthair in the 8th grade for her 13th birthday. She finished her as a champion in the ring and bred her to her grandsire, CH. Adam von Fuehrerheim. She sold and co-owned one of her puppies to Terry Chandler and of that lineage produced Dual Champion Rugerheim’s Bit of Bourbon, one of the top Dual producers in our breed. Janet finished his show championship and Terry finished his field championship to complete his Dual Championship. He was their first Dual Champion together and they continue to breed to him with frozen semen that is close to 40 years old. Janet completed the Show Championship portion on over ten of the Dual’s that she and Terry bred. To date, Janet has finished numerous Show Champions. She and Terry are well known for the importance of the Dual Champion. She has earned an AKC Breeder of Merit designation. She is also a licensed field trial and hunt test judge. She was honored to judge Sweepstakes at the 2007 National Specialty Show. She also works with her local GSP club as secretary of their local field trial and is on the committee for their local specialty. Janet has worked with the GSPCA in many positions and as a member of many committees. She served on the National Specialty Executive Committee for many years then served as the Southwest Board of Director for several years. She served another tenure on the Executive Show Committee in more recent years and is currently a member of the Health and Welfare Committee. She recently was honored with being nominated and approved as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the GSPCA. One of Janet’s favorite things to do is mentor and encourage new people in the breed. Whether it is by selling them a beautiful puppy to get started with, putting on handling classes, getting them to attend a field trial, or encouraging participation in other performance events. Janet has truly dedicated her life to the breed, the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America, and the sport of dogs. GSPCA HALL OF FAME Janet Chandler 27 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

But do you know that they also share many of the same health concerns as us? From cancer to infectious disease to toxin exposure and more, dogs and humans have many common threats to our physical health. Prevention and treatment strategies to minimize these threats may be similar in many canine and human diseases. Therefore, research to understand dog health may also benefit people at the other end of the leash! This mutual benefit demonstrates a concept known as One Health, and we celebrate it every January during One Health Awareness Month. The One Health approach recognizes a connection between the health of humans, animals, and their shared environment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, cdc.gov), One Health is becoming increasingly important due to the growing human population, changes in climate and land use (such as increased farming), and increased movement of people, animals, and animal products through international travel and trade. These changes bring people and animals in close contact and make it easier for the rapid and global spread of disease. To tackle these challenges, a collaborative approach is needed among veterinarians, medical doctors, and other scientific-health professionals working locally, nationally, and globally. Contributing to this effort is the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF, akcchf.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs and their owners. CHF provides funding for scientific research into the health needs of dogs throughout their lifetime. With over $68 million invested since 1995, CHF-funded research has explored various health problems such as skin allergies, bone cancer, epilepsy, and more. As technology advances and new Health Research Benefits BOTH Ends of the Leash Author: Sharon M. Albright, DVM, CCRT The bond between humans and dogs has always been strong. In recent years, this bond has only grown stronger as dogs have become beloved members of the family – sharing our homes, hobbies, and furniture. The next time your dog looks up at you from the other end of the leash, smile and know that ... we are all in this together. 46 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

threats to canine health emerge, CHF remains responsive and directs research dollars to projects with the most potential to advance the health of dogs. If that research simultaneously advances knowledge for human medicine – all the better. Several examples of CHF-funded research have already made a significant impact on One Health. These include: • Ongoing research is examining the link between cancer development and toxin exposure. Research has already shown that canine bladder cancer is associated with household use of insecticides and herbicides as well as living in areas of higher industrial activity. Similarly, lymphoma in dogs and people is associated with household pesticide and herbicide use and proximity to industrial areas. Researchers are studying how genetic and environmental factors combine to cause various cancers in dogs with the goal of developing better prevention strategies like water filtration and efforts to decrease air pollution. These strategies would benefit both dogs and humans. • Bone cancer in dogs (osteosarcoma) shares many similarities with the human form of this cancer, which is usually diagnosed in adolescents. Histotripsy is a non-invasive, focused ultrasound method that mechanically breaks up tissues using controlled ultrasound pulses. It has been effectively used to treat liver cancer in humans and is now being studied to treat bone cancer in dogs. Successful laboratory studies have paved the way for an ongoing CHF-funded clinical trial using this treatment in affected dogs. It may eventually be helpful in treating humans with bone cancer too. • Borrowing from human studies showing the benefits of a ketogenic diet for children with epilepsy, CHF-funded researchers studied the phenomenon in dogs. Supplementing epileptic dogs with medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, one component of the ketogenic diet with direct anti-seizure effects on the brain, reduced seizure frequency and severity and improved the behavioral problems associated with canine epilepsy such as anxiety and cognitive changes. These are just a few examples of the benefits of One Health research. Investigators are studying many diseases that impact both dogs and humans such as antibiotic resistance, tick-borne disease, breast cancer, and more. While the primary focus of CHF-funded research is to improve the health of dogs, the collaboration between scientists from different fields allows us to learn more quickly and efficiently, which can benefit both benefit veterinary and human medicine. So, the next time your dog looks up at you from the other end of the leash, smile and know that you are connected in many different ways, and we are all in this together. Learn more about CHF’s commitment to One Health at akcchf.org/onehealth. 47 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL

The N Fl GSPC held its December 16-17 field trial at the GMHT Hunt Club in Lake Wales Florida. While the club normally holds a horseback trial in December, changes at the grounds we formerly used led us to the decision to move to the Hunt Club. The grounds still had good cover with all the warm weather and as usual an abundance of available water for the dogs and horses. The weather forecasters had been calling for a chance of severe weather and heavy downpours on Saturday the whole week prior to the trial. We did have rain but fortunately the severe weather predicted never made it to us, Sunday was predominantly dry but rather windy. Luckily the weather both days did not really not affect the dogs performances and the birds flew well for the most part. Bob and Jan Erbe once again put on a well-organized event with the help of several hard-working volunteers. Bob Budden grilled up a fine lunch both days along with some bird planting and gunning alongside Bob Erbe and Paul Hermes. Rory Donnelly spent most of the weekend tirelessly planting birds and helping where needed. Thank you to our judges Tom Bass, Tiffany Bass, Jean Mator, Judith Hamilton, Rick Donohue, Stephanie Daugherty and Becky Jacobs. Thank you to all who entered. Congratulations to winners and those who placed. CANINE EPILEPSY IMPACTS OWNER QUALITY OF LIFE In a recent study conducted in England, researchers focused on the emotional and logistical challenges for owners of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy. The research concluded that the commitment to care for an affected dog is far greater than previously estimated. In addition, veterinarians and friends and families of the owners could improve owner quality of life if the challenges and experiences of the owner were considered. REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION. SUBMITTED BY JANE YATES Excerpts from: Pergande, A.E., Belshaw, Z., Volk, H.A. et al. “We have a ticking time bomb”: a qualitative exploration of the impact of canine epilepsy on dog owners living in England. BMC Vet Res 16, 443 (2020). https://doi.org/10.1186/ s12917-020-02669-w. Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological condition in dogs [1], with an estimated prevalence of 0.62% in dogs presenting to primary practices in the United Kingdom (UK) [2]. Many dogs with recurrent seizures are diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, a term defined by the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force (IVETF) as genetic epilepsy, suspected genetic epilepsy, or epilepsy of an unknown cause [3]. A recent study found that 54% of dogs undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for investigation of seizures had no structural lesions, and were considered to have idiopathic epilepsy [4]. Management of idiopathic epilepsy has typically focused on use of anti-seizure drugs to try and control the frequency and severity of seizures [5]. Despite potentially high monthly costs for epilepsy treatments [6] and the emotional and time commitments of owners to management, these efforts are often not proportional to success [7] and adequate seizure control may not be achieved [8, 9]. Historically, research on canine idiopathic epilepsy focused primarily on diagnosis and therapeutic management of the condition, but recently there has been increased awareness regarding the impacts on owners of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy [6, 10, 11] Many interviewees acknowledged that their quality of life was reduced in some way by their dog’s epilepsy. Other owners reported experiencing lifestyle changes, but avoided directly describing their quality of life as being affected. However, the changes described often appeared to involve significant effort, commitment and lifestyle restriction. Often limitations related to strict medication schedules (with dogs requiring drug administration twice or three times per day at set times), difficulty finding assistance in caring for the dog, and an inability to leave the house for leisure activities or vacations. Owners frequently stated that they did not mind making these adjustments for their pet, usually highlighting the close emotional bond between themselves and their dog, but sometimes citing other emotional reasons such as guilt. Some participants also reported that their employment had changed due to their dog’s idiopathic epilepsy. Some owners had reduced their working hours or 50 PAGE SHORTHAIR JOURNAL
