Ellie 202 1 National Specialty Winner

The 2021 National Specialty was an owner experience
that one cannot easily describe. We were incredibly
excited with Ellie’s win, given the exceptional German
Shorthaired Pointers at the event. We are longtime
owners of GSPs, starting this journey in 1995 with our
first, Maddy, and every GSP since then has played an
essential role in our lives. We’ve loved each of them and
formed a special bond with our loyal, intelligent, and
tireless companions.

We have been longtime members of the extended
Shomberg family, and thanks to Sharon and Steve
Dattilio, we’ve had three exceptional family members
with the Shomberg name. However, we knew there was
something special about Ellie from the moment we met
her, so much so that we felt, “Anything could happen,”
and it did! Watching Ellie move, whether around a ring, out in the field, or more often jumping from

one sofa to another and sometimes to a coffee table
in our home, brings an instant smile with her
grace and athleticism.

From the moment she was introduced to the show
ring by Morgan Mattioli, the two formed a bond
and rapidly (minus a slight interruption by
a pandemic) progressed to her Champion title,
including multiple best of breed wins, a task that
Joanne Thibault would take forward as her current
handler.

We wish to express our gratitude to breeder and
judge Ms. Heather Brennan and all the judges who
have recognized this solid liver and extraordinary
girl. In addition, we’d like to recognize Ellie’s
exceptional breeders, Sharon Datillio, Kahla Ennis,
Tina M. Craig, and Brenda Mahoney, for their dedication to the breed, striving to maintain the nature
of the German Shorthaired Pointer, breeding for health, temperament, adherence to the AKC breed
standard, and versatility in performance. Ellie is truly an example of this effort.

Finally, we recognize the GSPCA National Speciality team that successfully navigated the many
challenges over the last two years to persevere, adapt, improvise, and overcome so many obstacles of a
pandemic and execute a successful National event. It was an honor to participate and meet so many
great members of this community who are committed to our sport and breed.

GSPCA CODE OF ETHICS

This Code of Ethics outlines the essentials of responsible behaviors for German Shorthaired Pointer owners and potential breeders
whose foremost aim should be the health and welfare of their dogs and the breed.

SECTION A
Members of the GSPCA agree to abide by the Club’s Constitution which, in Article 1, Section 2 defines the objects of the Club as:

(a) To encourage and promote the breeding of pure-bred German Shorthaired Pointers and to do all possible to bring their natural
qualities to perfection;
(b) To encourage the organization of independent local German Shorthaired Pointer Specialty Clubs in those localities where there are
sufficient fanciers of the breed to meet the requirements of The American Kennel Club;
(c) To urge members and breeders to accept the Breed Conformation Standard of the breed as approved by the American Kennel Club
as the only standard of excellence by which German Shorthaired Pointers shall be judged;
(d) To do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the breed by encouraging sportsmanlike competition at dog shows,
field trials, hunt test, and obedience trials;
(e) To conduct sanctioned matches and specialty shows, field trials, hunt test, and obedience trials, agility trials and any future AKC
recognized licensed event under the rules of The American Kennel Club.
Consistent and/or flagrant disregard for the Code of Ethics may constitute conduct prejudicial to the breed and/or the club under
Article VII, Section 2 of the GSPCA By-Laws.

GSPCA members agree to:

Adhere to the procedures outlined in the GSPCA By-Laws.
Comply with the rules, regulations and requirements of the American Kennel Club.
Maintain their dogs in healthy and clean condition, providing proper nutrition and housing, regular veterinary care, appropriate
social experience, and regular exercise in a safe area.
Behave in a sportsmanlike manner and not disparage other owners, exhibitors, breeders and their dogs.
Avoid public confrontation with officials, exhibitors and/or those providing services at GSPCA and/or AKC sponsored events.
Avoid public comment or action intended to impugn the integrity of members of the GSPCA including its Officers, Directors
and Committees.
Conduct business at official club meetings with courtesy and respect.

SECTION B
As a member/breeder:

Breed only with the intention of improving the breed, using sire and dam of appropriate qualities in relation to the official breed
standard and soundness in health, physical structure and temperament. Promote and breed with the intention of producing high
quality hunting dogs that strongly represent what the breed is intended to be, a hunting breed.
Not sell, consign or donate puppies or adult dogs to commercial breeders, retailers, research laboratories or supply dogs for lotteries,
raffles, prizes or auctions.
Not release puppies less than seven weeks of age.
Encourage puppy purchasers to spay or neuter animals placed as pets.
Screen all prospective buyers to assure that puppies have safe and loving homes.
Furnish buyers with an honest evaluation of the quality of the puppy/dog sold and details on feeding, care, inoculations, as well as
pedigrees and written sales agreements. Sales agreements should include requirements that the owner:
a. Maintain the best possible standards of canine health, cleanliness and veterinary care in an atmosphere conducive to the stable
development of their dogs.
b. Not allow dogs in their care to run free other than in a controlled situation and become nuisances to society.
Provide assistance and support to puppy buyers for the life of the dog.
Be willing to take back or re-home animals sold because of situations or circumstances that have changed in the life of the buyer.
Encourage owners to become involved in German Shorthaired Pointer activities, the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America
and local German Shorthaired Pointer Specialty Clubs.

As I write this we are entering the third week of our SHORTHAIR JOURNAL
National Field Trial in Eureka, Kansas. I was lucky
enough to be able to attend the first week. VP, Christy Bonnie Hill

Our club was so excited to hold our very first Scent work Trial and it was a real honor to hold it prior to the
National Specialty Show! That made it even more special and exciting. We have lots of people to thank for
helping to make this a reality.

The BIGGEST Thank You goes to our club member and Scent Work Judge extraordinaire Jodine Briel – with-
out her this would not have happened. She scoped out the site, helped me pick out the ribbons, got me set up
with the software I needed and then on top of it all served as our judge! Thank you to Mary Baque for serving
as our Chair. Thank you to Pat Beckstrom, Sandy Lewandowski and Kim Trzcinski for serving as committee
members and all those that helped in any way. Special thanks to Becky Feigh, GSPCA Director who helped with
the approval process and scoping out the site for us.

I have served as secretary for Hunt Tests, Field Trials, Specialty Shows and Obedience but this was my first
scent work trial so I personally would like to thank all the participants for their patience as I worked through
a few glitches with the software and getting the paperwork right.

It was a really great group. I think everyone enjoyed themselves and it was so nice to see the sportsmanship
and camaraderie while maintaining social distancing and following mask protocols while competing indoors.

Thank you to all that attended and congratulations to all those who placed and qualified.

AROUND THE NATIONAL

VISITING WITH SOME OF OUR MEMBERS

Meet Benjamin and Caleb Foster. They came to their
first National Specialty Show from Wisconsin. Caleb,
shown on the right, was in the Novice Intermediate
Class, and Benjamin, left, was in the Open Interme-
diate class. I was able to sit down with these young
men after the junior showmanship competition.
What they liked most about the Nationals was that it
was only GSP’s, said Caleb - and a lot more competi-
tion, said Benjamin. Benjamin, when asked, would
love to see more juniors participating in showman-
ship. Caleb said that he would like to see bigger rib-
bons. He really liked the rainbow ribbons that were
handed out for Pee Wee’s. These young men were not
big into social media, but Benjamin thought that You-
Tube videos would be a great way to communicate
with the younger generation. Both Caleb and Ben-
jamin cited Stan Matsumoto, in their area, as their
handling mentor. He teaches handling classes and
is a UKC judge. Both Benjamin and Caleb compete
in shows about twice a month, as they have other
activities that they participate in, choir, football, and
wrestling, citing Iowa Hawkeyes as their favorite.
Caleb is very easygoing about music, but Benjamin
likes pop and hip hop music. The best things about
Benjamin’s GSP is that she is a great hunter, and she
is a black GSP. Caleb’s GSP has the best attitude, and
she is pretty. As far as prizes for junior showman-
ship, they liked them a lot but would also like more
dog accessories like collars, leads, and bowls. Caleb
was sticking with big ribbons as the best prize. Caleb
and Benjamin also participate in Fast Cat and hunt tests with their dogs. They are both looking for-
ward to being the age where they can apply for scholarship money from the GSPCA and AKC.

Meet first-timer to the Nationals, Shane Walker. Shane is
11, almost 12 years old. He showed his dog in Novice Jun-
ior at his first National Specialty Show. He got involved
with GSP’s because of his mom. His favorite thing about
the National Specialty Show is seeing all the different
dogs, including solid liver dogs and roan dogs. Shane par-
ticipates in disc dog with his GSP and placed third nation-
ally. He also does toss and fetch, scent work, and trick
dog with his dogs. I asked him what the funniest thing
his dog does is. He said he tells him “bird,” and he tilts
his head and starts looking around for some birds. His
favorite dog at this dog show was Jade, shown by Valerie
Nunes Atkinson. We asked who he would like to meet at
the Nationals, but was a bit too shy to approach. And he
said he got to meet Valerie at the juniors luncheon, which
is who he wanted to meet.

Meet Nancy Conrad. She has been attending GSPCA Nationals since 1976. Nancy’s first national was in
Colorado, and it was a good location and her first time flying. She took her dog, Ch Conrad’s Brio. She
was so excited as her dog had made the cut. We asked Nancy who her favorite winner of the National
Specialty was, and she said her own dog, Ch Conrad’s Brio. It seems that she came back with him in 1977,
and he won the whole thing under judge John Rementer.

We also asked her about the long-standing Tippy Toe
award and what its origins were. Nancy said it was
for not so graceful things that happen in and around
the National Specialty Show. When asked about her
favorite Tippy Toe moment, she said her own. Her
denture broke while showing a dog, and she asked
the ring steward to hold it for her while she finished.
Nancy loves the National Specialty Show, loves visit-
ing with the people, and loves seeing other dogs and
what other areas are doing with dogs.

THREE DAYS OF OBEDIENCE AND RALLY
AT THE 2021 NATIONAL SPECIALTY

It had been over two years since the last GSPCA nationals in 2019, so it was great for so many German Shorthaired Point-
ers and their owners to finally be able to gather again. Obedience and Rally enthusiasts could compete in three obedience
trials and three rally trials. Conditions were very nice: a quiet room, separate from conformation, with adjacent crate
room.

Tuesday’s regional trials began with Rally, followed by Obedience. Wednesday featured the GSPCA Supported trials.
Thursday was the big day: the GSPCA National Specialty trials! Three very busy days. Both of the judges were very pleas-
ant to show under.

Shirley Spall judged the Tuesday and Wednesday regional and supported trials. She noted, “I was blessed with many great
working teams in the ring along with a few silly ones! Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves! Which of course is
our ultimate goal!...My deepest respect to everyone who maintained their training skills to compete at your Nationals! There
were many excellent teams in both Rally and Obedience!”

James Communale judged the National Specialty trials on Thursday. He commented, “It was great fun to judge teams from
all around the country and I have to say that everyone seemed to be having a relaxed and enjoyable time. Of course course,
some may have found it more “enjoyable” than others, depending on how their dogs performed! But I have to say that good

Membership for the amazing job! MEADOWHILL’S PLAY WITH FIRE UD PCDX BN GO VER RE SH JHR

During these very trying times, GSPCA rose to the occasion Linda Montgomery
rescheduling the show multiple times with many changes
in dates, venues, and even some judges! What a great ac-
complishment! I certainly hope everyone has maintained
their sanity!

Your club brought out many performance exhibitors! I
was blessed with many great working teams in the ring,
along with a few silly ones! Everyone seemed to enjoy
themselves thoroughly! Which, of course, is our ultimate
goal! Congratulations also to my most advanced teams
showing in Open & Utility! These are not easy classes, es-
pecially since many of us have not had the opportunity
to show for many months! It takes a lot of dedication and
work on these handlers’ part! My deepest respect to eve-
ryone who maintained their training skills to compete at
your Nationals! There were many excellent teams in both
Rally and Obedience!

Thanks for inviting me to spend time with your club and
your very lovely breed! I truly enjoyed the opportunity to
spend time with your club at your National event!

Barb Booher

May 28, 1957- December 28, 2018

To know Barb, and her passion for dogs, we must
start at the very beginning.

As a youngster, when playing with friends, Barb
always insisted on being the dog! We often joked
that Barb had to have been a dog in her first life,
and I don’t think that’s an unrealistic concept. As
she grew, she began to volunteer to walk the
neighborhood dogs. Wherever she went, she had a
dog in tow. It was also not unusual for a stray dog
to conveniently “follow” her home. Those stray
pups more often than not became members of the
Booher family.

Her passion for four legged canines soon developed into a rescue mission.

Over her lifetime Barb saved, groomed and re-homed over 800 dogs from local animal shelters. She
was a natural at finding the perfect breed for an individual or family. She was also an excellent
groomer. When she finished a dog it could walk into a show ring!

Barb was a member of the Grand River Kennel Club, GSPC of Ohio and the GSPCA. She helped put
on many GSP Specialties for the GSPCO. Being a long-time member of the Parent Club, she loved
helping Parry Crowley with the Parade of Title Holders. She prided herself in the correct
pronunciation of the somewhat tricky names of the title holders.

Barb bred and exhibited under the Sonnenschein
kennel name. She produced BIS, BISS, NSS
winners, Champions and wonderful family
members to be used in show and/or field.

Her heart dog was 2X BIS, multiple BISS, HOF CH
Sonnenschein’s Paisley Print. Barb and Paisley
shared their home with numerous Shorthairs,
Pretzel, a beagle basset mix and two French
Bulldogs, Stella and Gwendolyn.

My mom, Patty Crowley, also known as
“Quean” by her GSP family, started in GSPs
in the mid-seventies. Her journey started
when she was getting a dog for my brothers.
I had a boxer, and she wanted them to have
a dog. He was a Christmas gift to the boys,
but quickly became her new passion after a
lifetime of breeding, training, and showing
Quarter Horses with my grandparents. The
GSP was named Baron Edward Von Pooh. He
was purchased from Chuck and Nancy
Baldwin. This purchase started a friendship
with the Baldwin’s, as well as setting her on
the course of an over 40 year span of
breeding and showing dogs under the kennel
name of Shannon. �
We all learned to show and field trial back in those early days. Her first bitch was
St Hubertus Katie Did. Over the years we she owned and bred many amazing dogs and made numerous
lifelong friendships. Many will remember her heart dog, Keeper, appropriately named, Shannon’s Hearts
Afire. He was a stunning dog with an amazing temperament. And she was so proud of Monroe, who she
co-owned with her “sister”, Sharon Datillio. My mom showed Monroe to Best in Show from the 12-18
month puppy class, yes, she was that gorgeous and so many remember the thrill of that day. She was very
proud of her last GSP litter of 4 from Kindle and Grant. Those 4 puppies were gorgeous. She was so proud
of Ceely’s accomplishments, and would be thrilled with how her last puppy, Lola, turned out. My mom
was passionate about genetics, and would study pedigrees quite a bit before breeding. She really had a
knack for anticipating what different breedings would produce. My mom was involved with several
kennel clubs over the years, and was heavily involved in planning for Nationals. She would often have
paperwork spread out preparing for her conference calls to plan the events. And who can forget her
“Magic Hands” Few can stack a dog the way she could. She was always willing to help anyone who wanted
to learn. And sometimes she may have offered opinions to some who didn’t ask, but, in the spirit of being
helpful. She would beam with pride if she gave you some advice, and it helped you move forward. Not
sure there was anyone louder outside the group ring cheering on her friends. If you listen, I’m sure you
can still hear her cheering you on. My mom looked to
her GSP people as family, and the National’s as a family
reunion. The stories, some with photo evidence, are as
numerous as they are hilarious, and demonstrate she
was living her best life with all of you. She loved you all. I
am thankful that she had so many wonderful friends in
the GSP community. I can attest to the fact that when
the going gets rough, this community bands together
and shows up. Remember to listen closely, she is there in
her purple chair with the shamrock with her glass of
wine in hand, cheering you all on.

There's nothing mediocre about Leia. At 5 months old she won her first puppy Best In Show then
followed up with a maximum score Natural Ability Prize One and by 6 months, 1 day old finished her

Junior Hunter title.
She has since obtained a 3rd place ranking in the NOHS, with a BIS, Sporting group placement, Field
Trial placement, Obedience, Rally, Dock Diving and Master Hunter titles. She also raised a beautiful

litter and will continue her hunting career as well as further her Obedience/Rally titles. We are
looking forward to a fun, bright future ahead with all she's accomplished in her 4 years so far.

ALL ABOUT THE GSPCA TOP 25

I would like to take this time to thank the committee members for their hours of hard work. We are
very proud of the classy event we have. In fact, many other breed clubs have asked for our process
manual to start an event for their breeds. I can tell from experience as an All Breed show chair this is a
much harder task as the committee does it all. Tasks include but limited to getting the top 50 list, have
it checked for owners’ membership, collect the entries including pedigrees, dog bios, pictures, song
ribbon order, catalog etc.

Since the committee has been publicly questioned on our ethics about how judges are selected as well
as the judges’ scoresheets and the tabulation of winners, I will explain it once again. I will tell you it IS
NOT the chairman or even the committee that chooses the judges. And it is a computer program that
does the statistics of the winners .This committee works very hard to have a beautiful event to celebrate
our breed. As you may know, I will always defend any wrongful attacks against my committee and my
friends.

The judges selection process is as follows:
A list is compiled by a committee member (Sara Holloway-Smith [email protected] ) that
doesn’t show dogs any longer but understands the contacting and hiring of judges. The list hopefully
contains 5-10 from each category of judge (depending on the area where the National will be) That list
is sent via an email in June or July to ALL TOP 25 ELIGEBLE from the previous year to be voted on. The
votes are tabulated by the committee member. Deadline for nominations are 1 month after email is sent.
Just a note, the typical response for judges nomination is 6. The contact of judges starts with the person
with the highest number of votes in each category to see if they are available. A fee is not paid, only 1
nights lodging if needed and dinner. Once a judge from each category is contracted, all communication
is with that committee member including obtaining a picture and bio that is sent directly to the catalog
editor for inclusion in the catalog.

Requirements are as follows:
BREEDER JUDGE: An established GSP breeder who has been breeding for at least ten (10) years, having
produced at least 10 Champions of Record as published in the AKC Gazette. This information should be
given to Sara.
Multi breed Sporting Specialist AKC APPROVED Sporting JUDGE: Approved to judge GSPs and at
least four (4) other breeds (in the sporting group).
HANDLER: A professional handler (past or present), meeting the requirements for membership in
a Professional Handler’s Association (though not necessarily a member). Must have five (5) years’
experience in Sporting dogs.
Please note: Anyone nominated must be a member in good standing (in or within) the AKC and or
GSPCA.

Anyone that would like to suggest judges may do so by contacting Sara Holloway-Smith at
[email protected]. If a person you would like to nominate is outside the immediate area of
the National, they would have to pay their own expenses (air fare etc.)

Scoring Statistics:
As for the scoresheets, each judge scores the dogs and those sheets are collected usually by a JR and
given to the statisticians. Those scores are entered into a computer program that calculates the final
scores. The winners are determined by the highest score and announced at the Top 25 after the group
picture is taken. Any owner can ask for a copy of their scoresheets by email after the event. A photo will
be taken of scoresheets and emailed after I get home and unpacked from the National. I ask that the
email request be sent several days after the event as I will have hundreds of emails to go through. If you
don’t hear back from me, please send another email or call me.

A detailed cost analysis has been done for this year (see below) and after speaking with no less that 5
other breeds our entry fee is far below what most clubs charge and we include many extras. The Top 25
committee has discussed this and decided that the event entry fee will be increased to $125.
