ORAL EXAM – TEETH AND BITE

From the AKC Breed Standard – German Shorthaired Pointer: The teeth are strong and healthy. The molars
intermesh properly. The bite is a true scissors bite. A perfect level bite is not desirable and must be penalized.
Extreme overshot or undershot disqualifies.

*Note: Number of teeth are not addressed in the AKC Standard.

Correct bite – why is it important?

In a scissor bite, the upper incisors neatly overlap the lower incisors, and the upper canines and the lower
canines fit closely with the lower canine intersecting the upper lateral incisor and upper canine, while the
molars intersect in a saw-tooth manner.

This is the ideal bite which a great deal of dog-breed standards demand, especially those with medium to
long muzzles. The advantage of this bite is that it’s effective for grasping, holding, and eating food, minimiz-
ing the effect of wear and tear. According to Veterinary Medicine, any deviation from this type of bite is
considered malocclusion.

A level bite is when the upper incisors and lower incisors meet edge to edge. This bite may be acceptable in
some breeds however, the AKC Standard for the GSP states that a perfect level bite is not desirable and must
be penalized. It is considered a Serious Fault in the Deutsch Kurzhaar (GSP) FCI Standard. Often, in many
breed standards, the level bite isn’t considered ideal because this type of bite tends to wear down the surface
of the teeth and may contribute to periodontal disease and early tooth loss.

From a working dog perspective, anything other than a scissor bite is not ideal as it can affect their working
ability.

“Malocclusion Risks: For Retrieving and Obedience dogs, any malocclusion can lead to discomfort and pain, loss
of function and severe dental problems. It can also lead to a change in the how the dogs perceive objects. For
Police and Schutzhund dogs, any malocclusion impedes their ability to get a firm grip with their teeth. Without
a firm grip, these dogs are much more susceptible to bodily injuries and more at risk for broken teeth. Frisbee
competitors with malocclusions are at greater risk than those with correct mouths, especially when grabbing
the Frisbee at top speeds.”

Some judges from Working Breeds and Foreign judges tend to put more emphasis on bites than we are ac-
customed to and may ask for the dog’s mouth to be opened to ensure full dentation. This is not required

when judging the GSP however, there is little point in objecting to the exam if your judge requests it. You
could seek out the AKC Representative at the show to have them clarify the oral exam with the judge for
their future reference.

For judges the following is the revised AKC directive for Conducting Oral Exams:

The proficient judge alters their examination technique from breed to breed based on the priorities as
defined by the standard. It should never be identical from breed to breed to breed. To do so requires inter-
pretation of the written word as to what the standard is attempting to convey to you as the judge. The man-
ner in which a breed’s approved standard is written will define what would constitute conducting a breed
specific examination. Close inspection of a breed’s approved standard will determine the appropriate oral
exam to conduct when judging that breed, which is an essential component of the breed specific exam.
Oral exams can be generally divided into four (4) categories which individually or in combination will con-
stitute the proper oral exam for a breed:
1. Bite – checking the front
2. Teeth – checking the fronts and sides
3. Mouth – involves opening the mouth to count teeth or check pigment. Always used in combination with

a “bite” or “teeth” exam depending on the breed
4. Thumb exam – used for smaller, short muzzled breeds that call for an undershot jaw

1. Bite – This exam is proper when the standard ONLY refers to the alignment of the bite; scissors, level,
undershot or overshot, as a preference, fault or disqualification.
his requires the exhibitor or judge separating the front of the lips to display the meshing of the incisors
and canines.

2. Teeth – This is required for any breed that references missing teeth or dentition. This includes disqualifi-
cations for missing teeth, and any reference to full dentition or a full complement of teeth as a preference
or fault due to a lack thereof.
This requires the exhibitor or judge to separate the front of the lips to display the meshing of the inci-
sors and canines AND the flews on each side of the mouth so the judge may observe the pre-molars and
molars on the upper and lower jaw for each.
**Note** While a standard may not reference full dentition, some parent clubs may recommend exams
beyond checking the bite (front) due to unique characteristics (i.e. upper incisors fitting snugly in back of
the lower canine teeth on each side), to inspect for wry mouths, and/or address language that references
all teeth (i.e. Teeth - sound, strong and evenly spaced). Please consult with parent club for specific tech-
niques.
In addition, the expectation for full dentition may be excluded by a breed’s standard under specific cir-
cumstances. (i.e. Toy Fox Terrier: Bite - a full complement of strong white teeth meeting in a scissors bite
is preferred. Loss of teeth should not be faulted as long as the bite can be determined as correct.)

3. Mouth – Required for any breed that includes a standard disqualification for pigmentation or missing
teeth that require checking the M-3s. If the M-3s are excluded from the DQ by the standard (Leonberg-
ers), opening the mouth is not required. It is used in combination with the “bite” and/or “teeth” exam
depending on the language within the standard.

GSP Club of IL Designated Specialties
July 15th – 18th, 2021

The GSP family gathered once again at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Belvidere, IL. This reunion has been
going strong since 2006 and we have tried to add to it and make it better every year.

We had mixed emotions about this year’s gathering. On one hand we were happy to be able to hold our events
after the cancellations in 2020. On the other hand due to Covid19 restrictions being lifted just 2 weeks prior to
the shows we did not have time to get a raffle and our usual Friday and Saturday lunches arranged. This was
a BIG disappointment for both the club and participants.

It was especially disappointing as our shows were dedicated to our Chair – Jim Dinges. Without Jim’s hard
work and leadership we would not be able to have held these shows for the last 15+ years. Jim is taking a well-
deserved rest from the role of Chair but will continue to serve as our advisor going forward. Words cannot
thank him enough!

This year we opened with a Fort Dearborn Supported Entry with the Blackhawk KC on Thursday judged by
Mrs. Joan Luna Liebes.

Friday featured a GSPC of IL Designated Specialty in the morning with the Blackhawk KC All Breed judged by
Dr. Eric Liebes.

The Fort Dearborn Independent Specialty got started in the afternoon with Mr. Kent Meyer doing Sweeps and
Mrs. Joan A. Lester judging the classes, Breed and Junior Showmanship.

Saturday morning featured a Fort Dearborn Designated Specialty with the Kishwaukee KC All Breed judged
by Mr. Paul B. Averill DVM with Barbara Madrigrano judging Sweeps.

The GSPCA Regional Specialty was held in the afternoon with Mrs. Gwen Meyer doing Sweeps and Breeder
Judge Christy Douglas-Featherston doing us the honor of judging the classes, Breed and Junior Showmanship.
Sunday finished things up with a GSPC of IL Designated Specialty once again with the Kishwaukee KC judged
by Mr. Ken J. Murray with Mr. Al Baque judging Sweeps.

As always, this report would not be complete without thanking the many people who helped out in so many
ways - A big thank you to each of our Judges who had very tough decisions to make each day. More than one
commented on the quality of the GSP’s they reviewed.

A very special thank you goes to club members - Jim Dinges, Lisa Dziedzina, Pat Beckstrom, Sandy Lewan-
dowski, Jodine Briel, Al and Mary Baque. Thank you to the many Fort Dearborn and GSPC of IL members and
others who made donations to the trophy funds. Thank you to Booth Photography for supplying the pictures
of the winners. I am sure I have left someone out and I apologize.

Our club members work for months getting ready for these shows but we could not do it without the folks that
come every year to bring their GSP’s and share in our very special get together. Putting on these shows is truly
an effort but it is worth it to see the comradery and smiles! Thank you!

I am sure those that have attended previously have the dates on their calendar all ready but if you
haven’t joined us before you will want to be in Belvidere, IL next year – July 14th through the 17th for
fun, food and laughs. We are planning to mix up a bit so stay tuned. Oh, and by the way – we should
have majors too!

HIGH JACKING OF THE BREED STANDARD…

We begin in 1935. Yes, you read the date correctly. Found in the official AKC publication, Sport-
ing Dogs and recognized by AKC to be the first Standard for the breed titled “Description and
Standard of Points” was adopted March 1935 by the National German Shorthaired Pointer Dog
Club and approved by AKC April 9, 1935.

Who were founders and members of the National German Shorthaired Pointer Dog Club? A reprint of
an article in 1991 states that Doc Thornton was to have been the honorary President but list no other
names. We know some of the early German immigrants were responsible for imports after WW I. Did
these individuals come together as a group to promote the breed by contacting AKC for it to be recog-
nized thus creating a stud book pedigree data base?

AKC recognized the breed in 1935 but to do so required a breed standard for the dog to be judged
against, so was there a “high jack” of the 1902 German Standard or did the National German Short-
haired Pointer Dog Club members arrived at their own version. It’s probably safe to say those importing
Shorthairs at the time were probably of the opinion their dogs were the best examples of the breed and
modeled elements of them when composing the 1935 AKC Standard.

The top line of the Shorthair that accompanied the Standard was corrected with an ink pen so it ap-
peared smooth. “Was the Standard written to describe this dog?”

Which may have led to the following comments of Ed Loring and Jack Shattuck, two of the eight original
signers that made application to AKC for recognition as the Parent Club in 1938 about the process to
replace the 1935 Standard.

Ed Loring...”The parent organization spend many weary months working out a clarification of the
standards for the breed and on May 7th, 1946, the present standards adopted by the parent club were
approve by the American Kennel Club.”

Jack Shattuck... “The breed standards or anatomical requisites as established in the U.S. today and ac-
cepted by the American Kennel Club are essentially the same as those established in Germany.”

The subsequent AKC Standard approved in 1946 was based on the 1902 German Standard. Hard to ar-
gue with the Standards agreed upon in the country of origin.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DOG FOR THE
HOLIDAY SEASON

With so many festivities, from Thanksgiving and Hanukkah to Christmas and Kwanzaa, the end
of the year is an incredibly busy time. All that additional excitement and activity can be a lot
for your dog to handle. Not to mention all the extra visitors, sights, sounds, and smells. Plus,
it’s easy to get wrapped up in holiday preparation and neglect your dog’s regular routines. Add all that
up, and you have a recipe for dog stress. The following tips will help you prepare your dog so you can
both enjoy the coming holiday season.

Consider Your Dog’s Personality

Some dogs adapt well to chaos and change while
others need the predictability of routine. Some
dogs can handle lots of visitors, but other dogs be-
come anxious around children or strangers. Some
make well-mannered house guests; others are bet-
ter left at home. Think about what your holiday
might entail and then consider your dog’s person-
ality. If you anticipate your dog’s needs, it will be
easier to accommodate them.

Don’t expect your dog to simply cope. A stressed Photo Credit D. Krause
dog might act out and exhibit problem behaviors or
even become aggressive. And it’s not fun for your
dog to endure stressful situations. Instead, help
your dog in whatever way suits them. Will they be
happier in their crate when company comes over?
Then be sure you have plenty of chews and food-
stuffed toys to keep them occupied while they’re
inside. Will they need exercise and potty breaks
in the middle of the day? Then schedule that into
your holiday routine. The more you can adapt to
your dog’s needs, the better the holiday will be for everyone.

Purchase Appropriate Supplies

Stock up on all the items your dog is going to need. With a huge holiday to-do list, it’s easy to forget your
dog has a shopping list too. Purchase food and treats. You want to be able to reward good behavior. Also
look for chews and food-dispensing toys to keep your dog occupied when your attention is elsewhere.

Consider buying your dog something special like a new toy or some bully sticks. It’s fun to let them par-
ticipate in holiday gift-giving, but it will also help them form positive associations with the hustle and
bustle of the holidays. And if you think you might need baby gates or an exercise pen to keep your dog
out of a certain area, get these barricades in place in advance so your dog can get used to them.

Stick to Routine

When the big day arrives, try to stick to your dog’s usual routine as much as possible including meal-
times, potty breaks, and exercise. The predictability will help your dog feel less overwhelmed. And as
you will be incredibly busy, it’s important to discuss with family members who will be responsible for
the dog’s needs. Assign dog duties in advance so you don’t neglect anything.

Exercise is particularly important right before visitors arrive or before meals. It will burn off your dog’s
excess energy, which might be more than usual with all the activity going on around them. A tired dog

is more likely to nap than bother your guests or beg at the table. If you can’t provide physical exercise,
definitely get your dog’s brain working. Mentally stimulating games can be just as tiring.
Brush Up on Training Skills

The holiday season might be a tricky time to start training new behaviors. You will likely be too busy to
be consistent. But you can certainly brush up on the behaviors your dog already knows. Basics like sit,
down, and stay are helpful for controlling your dog’s behavior. Cues like leave it and go to your place
are also incredibly useful. They allow you to be proactive and prevent problems before they occur.

Manage the Situation

If your dog’s obedience skills need work, or you know their personality won’t mesh with your holiday
plans, then you need to manage the situation for your dog. First, you don’t want your dog practicing
rude behaviors like begging at the table or counter surfing. Second, you don’t want to push your dog
past what they can tolerate.

Management will vary based on your dog’s personality. It might mean blocking access to certain rooms,
using a crate when you have company, or keeping your dog on leash when people come to the door. The
important part is to make the experience rewarding for your dog. This isn’t a punishment. If you put
your dog in their crate, provide them with a special chew toy. If they are tethered in one area, provide
treats and toys in that area, and so on.

Even if your dog can handle the holiday commotion, it’s still a good idea to give them an occasional
break from the excitement. Alone time is a proactive way of ensuring you don’t ask for too much from
your dog. Family mealtimes are a great opportunity to put your dog in their crate or ask them to go to
their place in a quiet room. You can focus on your feast, and your dog can rest and recharge.

Puppy Proof Your Home

The last component of management is puppy proofing. No matter the age of your dog, ensure there is
nothing dangerous for them to get into. That includes holiday plants and foods that are toxic to dogs,
like chocolate. Don’t leave anything where your dog can sneak a bite. Also, watch where you place deco-
rations. A curious dog can be injured if they try to chew or swallow them.

Consider your dog’s needs and avoid adding undue stress during this hectic time. It may be a lot of work
but preparing your home and your dog for the holiday season will help ensure everybody enjoys this
special time of year. Your dog will thank you for it.

New Puppy Buyer Program

Are you planning to have puppies? Then
this may be a program you would like to

participate in!
The GSPCA Board of Directors approved
a membership initiative for new puppy
buyers. GSPCA Member Breeders have

the opportunity to provide their new
puppy buyers a complimentary year of a

GSPCA Membership!!
Here are a few guidelines, which we
wanted to keep fairly minimal to keep
the program easy to administer and

offer:
All Breeders must be a GSPCA member
in good standing. The new owner must
not have been a prior member of GSPCA.
To participate in this program, breeders
should submit the application(s) which
can be downloaded here and submitted

by mail to the membership chair.
Applications must be submitted by
mail by the breeder within six months
of whelp date. Applications must be
accompanied by a copy of the puppy’s
AKC litter registration. All breeders
listed must be members of the GSPCA
to participate in this program. Program
