BTEC Qualifications
BTEC Qualifications
The school offers four level 2 BTEC Courses (equivalent to a higher grade at GCSE).
Digital Information Early Life Stage; Health and Sport
Technology Learning & Development Social Studies
BTEC Level 2 certificate courses are vocational methods of learning. Students study theory in
the same way as for GCSE subjects but with BTEC there are limited examinations.
Assessment of the students’ knowledge takes place via 75% coursework and practical
assessments, and 25% examination or online testing. This means that students are assessed
about what they have learned, not what they can write down under exam conditions.
BTECs are NOT aimed at weaker The BTECs are a different way of
students. They are suitable for any studying and showing what a student
student. has learned. Colleges and schools
accept BTEC grades in the same way
as they do GCSEs for allowing
students to enter sixth form or higher
education.
6 | www.ecgbert.sheffield.sch.uk / @KingEcgbert
Controlled Assessments
Controlled assessment has replaced coursework at GCSE. It allows students to produce their work in
school, under supervision and in a specified time.
Controlled assessment differs from coursework in that the final piece is produced under closely
supervised conditions. In some subjects this may mean writing up the final piece in class over the
course of one or more lessons monitored by the teacher. Supporting materials such as notes may
be used during the writing up, but not a complete draft. Different subjects will have different
arrangements but they will make sure that all students know how each controlled assessment is to
be carried out.
In some subjects work will be marked by the awarding body (Exam Board). However, for most
subjects work will be marked by the school and moderated by the awarding body.

Other points to bear in mind
• If not enough students select a course you have chosen, it may not be possible for that course to
run.
• If too many students select a course you have chosen, you may have to make an alternative
choice.
Sometimes, it is not possible to accommodate everyone's combination of courses. We try to
construct the timetable to enable as many students as possible to follow the courses they want, but
there may be combinations that we are unable to fit.
For these reasons we ask students to choose a reserve subject when they make their options choices.
[email protected]field.sch.uk | 9
How do you make the right choices?
DO DON’T
• Find out as much as you can about • Choose a course because you like
the courses by talking to the teachers your current teacher - the chances
listed in the course descriptions. are you won't get the same teacher
• Talk to your parents or carers. Show next year.
them this booklet, ask them to read it • Choose a course because a friend has
and then discuss with them which chosen it - your friend is unlikely to be
choices would be best for you. in the same group as you next year.
• Choose a course you are interested
in and enjoy.
• Choose a course you are good at.
• Choose a course that may be
relevant for a career you are
interested in.
Returning the Options Form
Once you have made your choices fill in your ‘Options Form’. You must have a parent/carer sign the
form. We will then be sure your parents know about your choices.
The Options Form will be issued separately to students - we give this out later so that students have
time to carefully consider their options. However, there are sample forms at the back of this booklet
so you can see how to fill them in. The form must be returned to school by Friday 19th March. The
process of allocating subjects to students begins immediately.
Any forms received after the deadline will not be included in the initial allocation process, and
therefore these students may not get their choices.

L@KES
Learning at King Ecgbert School
L@kes is taught for 1 hour a week and combines
Citizenship, Personal Social Careers Health Economic
Education and Religious Education and some
reflection on HOW we learn. L@KES lessons provide a
safe place to explore really difficult questions. The
content taught in each lesson can be simultaneously
linked to Current affairs; students' immediate
experiences and also more established and long
standing philosophies and ways of thinking. Students'
statutory requirement for Religious Education is
covered L@KES lessons. We also work with a wide
range of voluntary organisations who can come and
talk to our students to offer a different perspective;
including The City Of Sanctuary, The University of
Sheffield LGBTQ+ Society and Roundabout, a Sheffield
based homeless charity and many others.
Future Opportunities
................................................
Why should pupils study L@KES?
It gives students the time to be thoughtful, reflective,

Course Title: GCSE French Course Title: GCSE Spanish
Course code: 8658 Course code: 8698
QN code: 60181576 QN code: 60181606
95% of people don't speak English as their first language and 80% of
the world's population don't speak any English at all. Linguists are
therefore in demand! A GCSE qualification in a modern foreign
language will open up a world of opportunities to you in terms of your
future education, career prospects and travel opportunities. If you
can speak a foreign language you are able to offer something that a
lot of people here in England can't- which will make you stand out
from the crowd! The MFL department at King Ecgbert School offers
GCSE courses in French and Spanish. You must currently be studying
the language in Year 9 to choose this option for GCSE.
Future Opportunities
.....................................................
If you love communicating in another language, travelling or learning
about other cultures then a GCSE in a modern foreign language will be a
great choice for you. There is a whole world out there and a GCSE in a
language gives you the necessary skills to go abroad and immerse yourself
in a completely different culture.
You may be considering a career using languages such as interpreting or
translating- in which case this is definitely the subject for you. However, a
GCSE in a modern foreign language combines very well with lots of other
subjects such as sport, history, business and many more. Top universities
and employers want candidates who have a GCSE in a language as they
know how valuable the qualification is, especially as everybody in Europe
has to study a foreign language.
In Year 9 you may well not know what you want to do with your life yet. A
GCSE in a modern foreign language is a strong, academic GCSE which will
help you in any career path you choose and will be a skill that you learn for
life. Speak to any member of the MFL department about how languages
have changed their lives and the experiences that they have had by
choosing this at GCSE. Languages open up the world to you-don't risk
missing out!
