Inner Wheel Prayer

Instill in us O Lord, the true meaning of friendship
Never let us forget that we are all thy childern
Not with standing the differences in our culture and creeds
Endow us with a desire to serve our fellowmen
Remembering that we too often need help
Whenever or wherever the need for service arises
Help us to be ready to serve
Endeavouring to make our badge of Inner Wheel worthwhile
Ensuring that we have not
Lived in vain

FOUNDER OF INNER WHEEL
MRS. MARGARETTE OLIVER GOLDING

THE OBJECTS OF INNER WHEEL :
To promote true Friendship,
To encourage the ideals of Personal Service,
To foster International understanding.

Mrs. Oliver Golding in 1923 took the first step to form
an organization which today is considered as one of the
largest organization of women in this world.

Mrs. Oliver Golding, the wife of the Manchester Rotarian, was born of Welsh
Parentage of Hey Brecon. She was trained as a nurse and served as such during
the First World War.

Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905 formed the first Rotary Club. Mrs. Oliver Golding
called a meeting for the purpose of setting up a club on the Rotary lines - on 15th
November 1923 at Herriot’s Turkish Baths in Deansgate, Manchester. Jay French
writes – “it was a curious first meeting place, held in the cooling room of baths, On
being asked much later why such an exta – ordinary “choice of venue’ had been
made, Mrs. Golding admitted naively that it had been the only room that they could
get for nothing. This thriftiness has always been the guiding factor of Inner Wheel.

The next meeting was held on the 10th of January 1924. It was held at the social
Club, Lower Mosely Street, Manchester and marked the actual commencement of
the movement. This day is celebrated as “International Inner Wheel Day”.

The First Inaugural of the first IW Club of the world, was attended by 27 members.
The objects were clearly defined as “friendship & Service”. In 1936 the decision
was taken to mark the occasion of a Club’s formation by granting a Certificate of
membership (now called Charter).

All the attributes of a varied life were brought by Mrs. Golding to the service of
Inner Wheel. She was an excellent speaker. Nature had endowed her with the gift
of inspiring friendship and even devotion. Her greatest attribute was courage and
courage was what Inner Wheel needed in the beginning. She firmly established
Inner Wheel during her lifetime upon the path which it was to follow thereafter. Her
passing away on May 2nd 1939 was grievous and untimely end to a life devoted to
the service of others.

Empower and Evolve

International Social Project 2018-2021

Women are more likely than men be poor, hungry, victims of
violence. We need to ensure that the basic needs of women
& girls are met for their well-being and secure future.

Feminist is not about making women strong. They are already
strong; it's about changing the way world perceives that mena
strength Empowering women, girls is a prerequisite for
creating a good nation. When women are empowered, society
with stability is ensured.

If mothers are empowered and healthy, so are their families,
leading to an alleviation of poverty.

Time is up for crediting just our forefathers, it's time to
recognize the sacrifices of our foremothers.

So the International Social Project 2018-2021 is Caring for
Women & Girls.

Personal Bio
Born and raised in Sydney.Chris met her husband Rob when they
were both enrolled in law at Sydney Uni. They have been married
for 40 years. In between having children, Chris completed her degree
majoring in Sociology and Politics. She has 4 terrific children -2 of
each and 4 divine, but exhausting grandchildren.

Involvement and Service Local

Chris’s introduction to Inner Wheel began when she was invited to
be a guestspeaker at the Inner Wheel Club of Balmain in 2000 to
talk about her and her husband’s involvement in an orphanage in
Paradip, India that they established with another Rotary couple who
were living in India at the time. The orphanage continues to operate

10

IIW Theme 2018-19 - Empower and Evolve Inner Wheel District - 302

today. Chris joined the Balmain Club shortly after that ....and was
made treasurer on the same night. During her year as

President of Balmain, she introduced a few activities that were more
service based, rather than relying on members and their friends
having to put their hands in their pockets.

Ronald McDonald House

The Club began monthly visits to the Ronald McDonald House,
Randwick, where members prepared and served dinner to the sick
children and their families. It was about sharing with the families and
breaking the hospital routine for them, and the members loved it.
(She continued this project with her new club, Sydney Inner West.)

Sydney Cord Blood Bank

Chris had heard of Inner Wheel Clubs of Sutherland and Pt Hacking
running a weekly roster to collect cord blood from their nearby St
George Private Hospital, and drive it to the Sydney Cord Blood Bank
at the Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick.

She began a roster with her club to do the same from another
accredited hospital close to her club, Royal Prince Alfred. Happily,
Balmain and Sydney Inner West continue to do this one day each
week.

Gorman House St Vincent’s Hospital Another activity Chris
introduced was cooking a barbecue twice a month with the homeless
at the drug and alcohol detox centre attached to St Vincent’s Hospital.

Breakfast Club at the International School

One of her more recent projects has been Brekkie at Clevo where
members of her club prepare a breakfast at the International School

11

IIW Theme 2018-19 - Empower and Evolve Inner Wheel District - 302

each week during school terms. A good hearty breakfast is served to
the refugee pupils and an opportunity to practise their English.

District Level

(District A51 extends from the Northern Beaches to Wollongong in
the South and Camden in the West)

Chris became District Chairman, A51 in 2007-8. She was passionate
about expanding the organisation and following this role she brought
a number of women together and was the Charter President of the
Sydney Inner West Club in 2010.

Beginnings of International Involvement

Her journey to International Inner Wheel (IIW) really commenced in
2006 when she attended the IIW Convention in Christchurch. She
worked together with other members within Australia to produce the
very successful proposal that was presented at the Istanbul
Convention some 6 years later, opening the membership parameters
to this great organisation. No longer did a member have to be affiliated
with Rotary and this proposal has helped grow the organisation it is
today.

National

2013 -14 President Inner Wheel Australia, Chris continued to foster
the objectives of Inner Wheel – promoting true friendship;
encouraging the ideals of personal service; and fostering international
understanding. During this year as she travelled around the country
she loved meeting members and sharing the stories. Inner Wheel
was changing being more relaxed and inclusive.

International

Chris continued her journey in Inner Wheel and became Present of
Inner Wheel Australia in In 2014-15 she became National

12

IIW Theme 2018-19 - Empower and Evolve Inner Wheel District - 302

Representative followed by becoming an International Inner Wheel
Board Director in 2015-16 . Her journey continued and in 2017-18
she was elected Vice President of IIW and this role coordinates the
representatives of Inner Wheel at the United Nations. The
representatives follow and assist the work sessions of the
commissions regarding important themes as : Human Rights, Rights
of the Children, conditions of Woman, the family, the Elderly
and Drugs and report to the International Vice President on the
activities of the Committees and Conferences. Currently there are 4
IW members accredited at the United Nation Offices in Geneva,
Vienna and New York.

Future

Inner Wheel walks proudly besides all other service clubs in serving
the community. What Chris loves about Inner Wheel is that we are
truly women supporting each other in everything. That matters to
women: our families, health, the rights of the child, education,
equality, ageing, :::: our community. And when women work together
as members of Inner Wheel, their friendships and other benefits
come.

2018-2021 International Social Project launched the
recent IIW Convention in Melbourne is Caring for
Women and Girls.

Chris also launched her theme for the year providing all
members with a powerful message to embrace during
her year – Empower and Evolve

A lady of endless energy and passion to
strive to make a better place for all.

Message

My dear friends in Inner Wheel,

Cheerful Greetings to one and all!

The clock will strike 12 on the mid night of 30th June 2018, and the
new teams at each Inner Wheel level will be borne! Joy of a new
born and pains of labour, women need not be taught to take life
head on!

Hearty congratulations to new teams. My sincere best wishes for a
bright successful year ahead.

We, the women of Inner Wheel, leave behind comfort zones, and
take a path of service to mankind.

Life is full of challenges. Our family is our first priority. There are
demands on our time from all sides and yet we struggle to make a
way & give time for Inner Wheel. It gives us strength.

Let us harness this strength now differently. Let us change the way
we have been serving our charity social projects. Let us do joint
projects with larger effect. Lets us be the path breakers.

We need to increase our strength. From 1955 to 2018 it has been a
rewarding incredible journey.

We are 41000 strong members. Now we need to widen our horizons,
enlarge our vistas and increase our membership. Each one of us
should bring at least one new member and we will be simply double
our strength without many efforts. I seek your promise to reach this
goal collectively.

We need to bring new young members in to the fold of our
organization. We need to find out sources of this young population
and how to make them our members. Start visits to colleges, ladies

16

IIW Theme 2018-19 - Empower and Evolve Inner Wheel District - 302

groups, kitty groups, working women’s groups and we can find
members for us.

Collect funds for projects and join hands for joint projects. Be vigilant.
Charity is done at the right place in a right way.

Literacy, swacchatta, environment protection, ban on plastic, proper
garbage disposition, river cleaning, awareness of protecting nature,
clean green India, India as beautiful as the advanced countries should
be our common goal ! The difference between failure and success is
the Team work! Let us be excellent team players. Let us trust our
limitless potentials. Let us build high self esteem. It will build Stronger
Inner Wheel India!

I urge you to have faith in yourself, shed the fears, forget the tears,
hold the hands of likeminded friends, search and use your optimum
potential, be happy, be beautiful, be compassionate, be mad over
your dream & you will find a new meaning to your life! May we all
reach a destination of 100% literate, clean, green beautiful India!
We are the ones who are going to make it. And we will make it.

Let us march together… the promising sun rise of new year is inviting
us !

I wish you good health, happy hearts, cheerful thoughts, busy hands,
pure minds….where God resides!

Congratulations to all those who are ready to take the baton and standing in the
lead to fulfill our dream task. Dr. Abdul Kalam Says, Dream is not what you see in
sleep. It is the thing which does not allow you to sleep.

I am fortunate to be the 27th District Chairmen of this prestigious District 302 and
like to thank you all for giving opportunity to serve you all in such a wonderful Inner
Wheel Organisation. It is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to take the responsibility
and be a part of Inner wheel to evolve stronger. Inner wheel has been a huge family
and it just grows bigger every day. I am deeply honored and privileged to be the
District Chairman of District 302. This tenure is more special for me as I will be the
first chairman elect from “Rotary Mid town”. This is only possible because of my
fellow inner wheel sisters. Their motivation and dedication are the reasons that has
driven me all this way.

A vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others. As a leader I would like to
gain the capacity to translate vision into reality. The theme given by our IIW president
Christine Kirby is “Empower to Evolve”. Don’t you all think empowering women
would be the next step in human evolution? Through empowering women, the literacy
level will grow, and it will be a step to make the world more prosperous. Women are
the givers of life, natural nurturers and encouragers. But, they learn and earn the
least. Wrapped up in the responsibilities, women lose herself and her dreams and
always seem to take the back seat. As we enter into this new Inner wheel year, let
us all pledge to work for better platforms to encourage literacy and improve facilities
to uplift women. I also highly recommend exchanging experiences in promoting the
empowerment of women through different educational programmes.

So, let’s all work hard to promote our theme and focus on our projects. Great things
are done by a series of small things brought together. Remember to do what you
can with what you have and enjoy Inner Wheel. Not all of us do great things but we
can do small things with love. Convert all your goals and strength to achievements.
Wish you all successful Inner Wheel year and lets all empower ourselves and evolve
for a brighter future.

Lets Enhance, Empower and Evolve

Dear Chairman Jyothi,

“The great thing in the world is not so much as where we stand, as
in what direction we are moving” –

Oliver Wendell Holmes

I am sending a message for your District Directory, with much joy
in my heart. I am sure that this will serve as a valuable and
informative window to share with all Inner Wheel members.

Time seems to be flying like a kite. It seems only yesterday when
I saw you Jyothi, elected as President of your club and now you
are assuming the highest office in the District. Your job will be to
inspire the clubs and members of our wide spread district. I am
confident that with your vision, confidence and exuberance you
will take the district to newer heights.

I must thank you for inviting me to your Installation & District
Assembly. It is great pleasure for me to use this opportunity to
encourage members to ‘Empower & Evolve’ themselves and
others around them.

Keep working to reach the goal of cent percent Literacy!!!!!!

DISTRICT SIGNATURE PROJECT

The Story of Sari
"My Mother Passed away and left behind 100 saris. Can these be donated?"-

Saurav Chatterjee, Kolkata
The result of this one call started a new movement to provide anyone in need with a sari.

The idea was not just to provide a saree.
The idea was to make the recipient look beautiful once more.
The result was an unusual plan. The sari would be given the residents of
sarbari, run by NGO ISWAR SANKALPA, Ahome for Mental health patients in Kolkata.
The Ladies would be requested to wear the saris. Kolkata's ace photographer
Vivak Das would shoot the ladies. Ishrat Ansar beautician and stylist would do a
make over.
You will be surprised with what happened thereafter.
Body language changed, eyes sparkled, smiles returned, poise made a come-
back.
A Small Idea made a world of a differance.
Better still, that small idea triggered a 'movement'.
people sent in a number of saris in excellent condition.
with a request : 'Please give saris a new life'.
In the 4 weeks following 9th August 2017.... ...1037 saris had been dispatched.
The Acid attack survivors in Kolkata to Rag Pickers in Kolkata to Lepraosy
patients in Purulia to the less privileged in Howrah to the needy in rurl Bengal.

YOU DON'T NECESSARILY NEED TO THINK BIG TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
THINK SMALL, THINK OUTRAGEOUS.

WAITING TO CONTRIBUTE A SARI??
