VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, BARISHA, KOLKATA-8:

Principal's Message

Welcome. This is Vivekananda College for Women, with all its
resource, waiting to serve you and the society. The following pages will
give a detailed description regarding our resource, success and failure.
This will help you all to make a complete evaluation of the college,
keeping in mind the immense potentiality which we can reach with
march of time.

Education in India flourished from the Vedic Ashramas with Sām-
mantras full of moral values and self-realisation, the fragrance of which
faded long ago. At present we are in an era when it is difficult to identify the actual aim of education –
whether it is only the financial stability or to prepare „man‟ with moral values. Probably a perfect
balance, a perfect blending of the two is required at present which we actually try to do here. Formal
education is being supplemented here with non-formal and professional training giving better job
opportunities to the students. At the same time we try to enlighten our students through the messages
of Swami Vivekananda and try to make proper „man‟ with good morale and self-reliance. Our aim, on
one hand is to give light of education to the masses and to generate skilled workforce, on the other to
give quality education to students and to make better perspective citizens of the country.

Gender inequality in India is a social disease which is reflected in every field, starting from sex ratio
to higher education or from girl child mortality rate to women employment. Once Swami
Vivekananda wrote … “the best thermometer to the progress of nation is its treatment of its Women”.
Mahatma Gandhi also warned that “Man the law-giver will have to pay a dreadful penalty for the
degradation he has imposed upon the so-called weaker sex”. But such repeated intimations and
warnings from the renowned social reformers have failed to change our deep rooted mentality and
social outlook. The United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) statistics update 2013
indicates that in terms of Gender Inequality Index (GII) India ranks 127 out of 152 countries with a
GII value 0.536.

Less than 50% of the girls in India can reach school and less than 37% of the girls in India can reach
college. The scenario remains almost same if not worse in case of employment. But we the women, as
noted by Ramachandran “do three fifth of the World‟s Work, earn only one tenths of world income
and possess one hundredth of the world‟s assets”. In India only 19% of unpaid household work is
done by man.

Amidst such social ambience the women must be properly educated to acquire that much strength of
mind and financial stability to fight injustice which they face starting from family to the workplace. In
our institution we try our best to give job oriented trainings along with syllabus oriented education so

3

VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, BARISHA, KOLKATA-8:

that the students can face the competitive job market. A special kind of service we always try to
provide to our students, excepting the other facilities available here, at a minimum cost or without any
cost, like computer training, special class for job oriented English and Mathematics etc. But to out
utter surprise we realize that the students are not only reluctant to take the facilities but are also totally
unaware about the existence of such facilities. To them College is a place to go, to study the syllabus,
to appear in the examinations and lastly to get a certificate to declare herself as a graduate. In most of
the cases the degree remains ornamental without any use and the degree holders also remain happy
with that- but we remain anxious about their future.
We are not only anxious about this category of students, but we are also doing our best for that
category of students who are interested in higher education. Our Post Graduate Department of
Geography is running successfully and in its first Convocation the Vice Chancellor, University of
Calcutta, expressed his satisfaction regarding our performance. After long endeavor and debate the
department of Geography has also been recognized by the University of Calcutta as a „Research
Centre‟ for Geography, where the students of the college and outside are doing research for attaining
Ph.D degree.
Post Graduate course in Bengali recognized by the University of Calcutta has been started with full
enthusiasm and with a specific aim to establish it successfully like it‟s sister department.
Our dream is a relentless progress. Become a part of us, remain with us and share our dreams so that
we can uplift us to a „Model College‟, as per desire of the Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta,
expressed in his PG Convocation lecture.
Thanks,

Dr. Soma Bhattacharya

 National Cadet Corps (NCC) Training:
 NCC unit was established in this college in 1976. From the very beginning it was

efficiently guided by Major Sabitri Ganguly, the then Lecturer in Defense Studies
in Parnasree College Behala and NCC officer of that college as well. Thanks to
Sabitridi who inspite of her busy schedule extended cooperation to our NCC unit
to give it a long lease of life. Dr. Sujata Mukherjee, the then lecturer of Political
Science took the charge of NCC in 1987 as a Caretaker and after a year Major Dr.
Kaberi Banerjee was handed over the charge from her in 1988.

 NCC classes are held in the college on Saturday afternoon and Instructors would

regularly visit the college to take classes both theoretical and practical. In their
absence Dr. Kaberi Banerjee was the sole instructor and supervisor as well. Senior
students also efficiently guided the juniors with Annual Training camp (ATC).

VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, BARISHA, KOLKATA-8:

Basic Leadership Camp (BLC), Republic Day (RD) camp, Delhi and Calcutta,
Trekking etc.

 Our cadets joined almost all the camps after proving their competence through

selection. A few of them attended Republic Day camp Delhi which was a very
prestigious matter. They are Santwana Chakraborty, Priti Dutta, Jolly Bose,
Monalisa Kotal and few others. Sadhana Chatterjee received Best Cadet award in
dance competition in Delhi R.D. camp. Recently in 2008 Monalisa Kotal was
selected Right Guard of Honour of President Pratibha Patil. Trekking camp
inspired a few of our cadets to venture for mountaineering. Cadets Debamita
Majumdar and Malabi Das were foremost among them who successfully climbed
the peaks of the Himalayan range. But unfortunately Malabi lost her life in the
mountain on her way back from climbing a summit. Before going to her last
adventure she contributed to our magazine an article about her experience in
mountaineering.

 Another risky adventure was successfully attempted by Cadet Priti Datta who had

to land on the ground with parachute from aeroplane. She was awarded with
Governor‟s award. A good many number of the then cadets have been established
in different fields. Some have become teachers, Physical Education teachers or
professionals in private sector, receptionist or front office staff in government or
private sectors, receptionist or front office staff in hospitals or Aviation company.
Some have managed to have a business of their own. Jolly Bose is now an interior
decorator. Good trekker and dancer Debamita Majumdar is a long time news
reader in DD Bangla T.V. channel. Among recent cadets Arundhati, Aditi and
Monalisa got security service in CISF and Private agency.

 Our present NCC caretaker, Swantwana Chakraborty (Guha) also got appointed in

JCI rank in NCC. But she could not avail of the chance as her workplace was in
the remote area of Assam which was then politically surcharged. Now she looks
after both NCC and NSS units of the college.

 NCC unit is functioning in our college uninterruptedly under the able guidance of

Santana who is often assisted by the senior cadets like Pramita who conducts
parade.
After a short period of withdrawal due to health reason Major Dr. Kaberi Banerjee
has taken the charge of NCC unit again.

Recent Activities
 Recently this unit comprises of 110 cadets who actively takes part in
various camps throughout the year.
 In 2012 Anita Paul, Ayusmita Dasgupta and Moumita Mandi took part in
Delhi Republic Camp.
 Miss Pramita Dey joined Air India as a Security Officer in the year 2012.
 In the year 2013 four of our students joined Police Force. Sampa Sardar
and Chandrima Chokraborty joined Calcutta Police. Suparna Baidya and
Susmita Das are serving West Bengal Police.

 It is true that nowadays students cannot get enough time to concentrate whole

heartedly on NCC activities due to several reasons. The main reason is yearly

44

VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, BARISHA, KOLKATA-8:

examination system of the universities of West Bengal which bar students from
attending important camps like R.D camp or BLC. Another reason is the keenness
to attend job-oriented professional courses side by side with the curricular
activities. But it is true at the same time that the NCC has a great educative value.
It develops discipline, leadership quality, self confidence and integrity among the
cadets which are keys to success in any kind of profession. So NCC training is
necessary for the better future of the students and our college inspires the students
to join NCC or NSS for their future benefit.

 National Service Scheme (NSS):

The aim of true education is to teach a man to live not only for him but also for others. It
is necessary for him to learn, to identify himself with a larger life of the community –
especially with the less fortunate section.
Radhakrishnan Commission, the first Education Commission after independence,
recommended introduction of National Service in the academic institutions on a
voluntary basis with a view to developing healthy contacts between the campus and the
community. In 1960, at the insistence of Govt. of India, professor K.G. Saiyidain after
studying National Service by students of other countries, submitted a report „National
Service for the Youth‟, which recommended the introduction of National Service Scheme
(NSS) on a voluntary basis.
In view of the above, NSS unit of Vivekananda College for Women was always
responsive to community development since 1978 and the students and teachers have
actively participated in different community orientation programs. A unique step towards
community development was taken in the form of Village Adoption by the NSS unit of
the college in 1978 to 1985 under the able guidance of our respected senior teachers. Due
to unavoidable circumstances, the NSS unit of the College had been inactive till 2002.
After revival of the unit in 2002-2003, there was no looking back and the NSS unit of the
College has been working with full vigour and mirth.
The NSS unit attached to our College (Vivekananda College for Women) undertakes
programmes of different varieties to satisfy the needs of the College and locality and at
the same time to involve the young NSS volunteers in solving problems of different
dimensions. The following are a few of the regular activities that highlight the
achievements of NSS of our college –

Students and staff of the college show earnest zeal in discharging social service like
helping the poor or destitute for their medical treatment, victims of natural or national
calamities or providing regular financial assistance to temporary sub-staff. Much of these
activities go unrecorded. Some are mentioned below:
