VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, BARISHA, KOLKATA-8:
Very often teaching and non-teaching staff raise funds for medical treatment
of an individual suffering from acute fatal diseases like heart disease, kidney
failure etc.
In response to the national call to help the families of soldiers killed or
disabled in Kargil war and victims of super cyclone and earth quake in Orissa
and Gujrat respectively, the teaching , non-teaching staff and students raised
funds, knitted pullovers and contributed those to the entrusted authority (Fort
Williams for Kargil victims; West Bengal College and Teachers Association
for super cyclone and Gujrat victims).
College students, teachers and non teaching staff collect cloths and donate for
the flood victims regularly.
College student serve the visually impaired students of the neighbouring of
Calcutta Blind School as well as of their own and other colleges by working as
their writers in examinations.
Teachers and students buy stamps from Red Cross Society to help the
tuberculosis patients and contribute to the fund of National Armed Forces to
help the families of the disabled soldiers.
We hope that our NSS unit will march ahead devoting themselves to the enrichment of
the community.
Recent Activities
1. In 2011 Vivekananda College for Women was awarded Best Special Camp by
NSS Unit of Calcutta University and our student Pramita Dey was awarded the
Best Volunteer by the same unit.
2. In the year 2012 NSS co-ordinator Sm Santana Guha was awarded Best
Programme Officer by NSS Unit of Calcutta University.
3. In the year 2013 Vivekananda College for Women has been awarded the Best
College and Anita Paul has been awarded the Best Volunteer by NSS Unit of
Calcutta University.
4. i) In 2009 NSS Unit of Calcutta University organized a Trekking and
Mountaineering camp at Uttaarkashi where students of Vivekananda College for
Women Suparna Mondal, Sumi Jana, Priyanka Pramanik and Susmita Pramanik
participated as volunteers along with NSS Programme Officer Sm. Santana Guha
of Vivekananda College for Women.
ii) In the year 2010 NSS Unit of Calcutta University organized a Trekking Camp
at Kulu-Manali where Sampa Sardar and Anita Paul participated as volunteers.

iii) NSS Unit of Calcutta University also organized a Mega Camp in the same
year 2010 at Delhi where Pramita Dey and Payel Ghosh participated as
volunteers.
5. In the year 2011 Youth Festival was organized by Government of Rajasthan at
Udaipur where students of Vivekananda College for Women Pramita Dey, Payel
Ghosh, Krishna Nandi participated as volunteers and represented NSS Unit of
Calcutta University.
6. In the year 2012 NSS Unit of Calcutta University organized a Mountaineering &
Water Sports Camp at Shimla where Paramita Dey and Dipa Adhikary along with
Programme Officer Sm. Santana Guha had to trek from Hutcoty Shimla to
Chansel pass.
7. In the same year 2012 NSS unit of Calcutta University organized a Republic Day
Camp at Delhi where Anita Paul participated as a volunteer.
8. Rashmi Das, participated in National Level Basketball Championship Competition
in 2015 and Jayashree Dutta, in Shooting Championship in the same year.
Facilities
Facility for photocopying:
The facility is provided by the college by digital copier at nominal charges.
Students’ Counselling Desk:
Student-friendly teachers are always available to sort out specific academic problems as
well as for personal and social problems.
Placement Cell:
Vivekananda College for women opened a „Placement Cell‟in 2007 to help the students
entering into job market. Initially the cell organized a few in-campus interviews, job-
related seminars and workshops through active liaison with recruiting agencies and H.R
personnel of reputed firms. In 2009- 10 the Cell was transformed into UGC approved “
Career and Counseling Cell”. With the fund received from the UGC the Cell has widened
its activities. Considering the importance of job oriented skills in present economy we
have mainly focused on skill development among the students. Various training
courses(by hiring competent training personnel as well as in collaboration with reputed
organisations) are being organized for this purpose. Our students can get the benefit of
these training programs almost free of costs. It is worth mentioning here that the market

rates of some of the courses are exorbitantly high. The Cell also organisea Career
Counseling and Aptitude Test sessions by hiring professionals.
Training Programmes organized
In 2009 the Cell started a 3-month long placement-oriented program for the outgoing
students.
In this program training was given on general awareness, communicative skill, logical
aptitude and basic arithmetic. Resource persons were hired to run this program. The same
program was organized for three consecutive years.
In 2011our college incorporated classes on communicative English and General
awareness in general routine as a long term initiative for skill development. In that year a
course on soft skill development was conducted in collaboration with „Basundhara‟- a
professional institute.
In 2012 a training programme was organized for the students preparing for School
Service Commission (SSC) Examination. Another soft skill course was organized in
collaboration with „Edulite‟. This course was open to all and local youths got an
opportunity for skill development paying minimal charges.
In 2013 a training program on Entry in Services was conducted in collaboration with
R.I.C.E , the pioneering institute in this field. The duration of the course was 48hours.
This program will be held in 2014 also.
Some other Initiatives taken up by the Cell
In 2007, just after establishment of the cell, it arranged a Career and Counseling Seminar
where H.R personnel from a finishing school, Technable Solutions Private Limited came
and interacted with students about job prospect of different subjects taught in the
graduate level. In the same year, 6 outgoing students got job in IBM-Daksh through on-
campus interview.
In 2008 a seminar titled “Does the undergraduate syllabus equip the students for the job-
market – An invitation to a dialogue” was held. In the same year
EMCONS- a recruiting agency short-listed 21 students from the institute through on-
campus interview sent them to different companies some of whom have got absorbed
later. In the same month, members of the college placement cell contacted Head, District
Industrial Center, West Bengal and discussed about the prospect of setting up self-help
group by the students. A proposal in this effect had been sent to DIC so that joint training
session could be held to increase entrepreneurial skill among students.
In 2008 a seminar on career and counseling was held in collaboration with ABP-Career
Cell.
In 2009 and September, 2010 IBM organized campus interview and some girls got
placement.
In December 2010 Basundhara Education Society organized a workshop on career
counseling being attended by about thirty students.
In 2011 a seven –day workshop was organized in collaboration with Entrepreneurship
Development institute for encouraging students for self employment.

In 2012 Career Counseling and Aptitude Test sessions were organized by hiring
professionals.
Apart from this the Cell regularly inform the students about various professional courses
run by different institutes of national fame like, Indian Institute of Banking and Finance,
NIS Academy, ICFAI University, BILAMS, Indian Institute of Packaging to name a few.
Grievance Redressal Cell:
It comprises a complaint box in the entrance to redress the grievance of the students with
Principal in its apex.

Students aid fund
It extends financial help to the poor but meritorious, regular students from Students‟ Aid
Fund and Seminar Society of the College.
SC/ST Stipend
Stipend for the physically challenged and SC/ ST students are awarded by the
Government and different organizations.

Travelling concession for students is available as per Indian Railway.
Concession for BPL card holders
BPL card holders get special concession from the institution.
Teachers’ financial assistance
Teachers of the College have generated a fund for poorer section of the students.

Purified drinking water
Cooled and purified drinking water supply is from aqua guard.
Medical Facilities
A separate medical room is there with provision of first–aid and availability of doctors.
Medical facilities like regular health check up, blood group detection are available from
Students‟ Health Home and other voluntary organizations. Basic medicines are also
provided free of cost.
Medical Benefit Fund
The College has generated a fund for the students from financially backward section to
help them for their medical treatment.

ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY
The following girl candidates are eligible to apply for admission in Post graduate Course
in Geography in Vivekananda College for Women, Barisha, Kolkata-8, affiliated to
University of Calcutta.
Honours Graduates in Geography from University of Calcutta of the current year.
Honours Graduates in Geography from University of Calcutta of the preceeding year.
1st Class Honours Graduates or, its equivalent of other Indian Universities of the
(10+2+3) pattern.
RESERVATION OF SEATS
22% for SC and 6% for ST, *
OBC reservation as per Government rules.
Physically Challenged: 3% of the total number of seats**
Non-CU: Maximum 5% of the total number of seats subject to availability of suitable
candidates.
*As per Government rule Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates in her
domicile state are entitled to get the reservation facility. SC/ST certificate issued by the
competent authority of Government of West Bengal are only accepted.

Section 4: Payment of Fees of PG Courses
As soon as the applicant is offered admission to the college, the full fee becomes
payable (as per fee structure enclosed).
At the time of Admission Tuition Fee and Laboratory Fee for three months along with
all semester and annual charges are to be deposited.
All kind of fees (except fines) are payable in the cash counter of the college after
verification.
Fees must be paid within the 15th of the month for which the same is due.
Fees up to the month of end semester must be cleared prior to their
corresponding terminal examinations.
Name of the student will be struck off the rolls in case of non-payment of
tuition fees for two consecutive months.
All admissions are valid for a semester, and are therefore to be renewed for each
subsequent semester of study.
Fees once paid can neither be refunded nor carried over for a further session.
Educational Excursion is compulsory. A minimum amount of Rs. 10000/- will be
required for the purpose.

Rules and Regulations of the College
On admission each student will have to follow the rules of the College:
Must be punctual and regular in class attendance.
75% of attendance is essential in each subject to be eligible for appearing in the University
as well as College examinations.
Appearing in the College examination is mandatory for each student.
Absence from the Classes or College examinations may only be excused on Medical
Grounds.
Applications along with proper medical certificate and prescription should be submitted
to the office within due date in above-mentioned cases.
All applications are to be addressed to the Principal and to be submitted to the office.
Certificates will be issued on receipt of application only.
Should make a regular habit to see the College Notice Board.
Loitering in the corridors / lawn / College Gate / Public Road is strictly prohibited.
Should not have any visitor in the College.
Identity card issued by the College must be brought regularly.

awardee of Governor's Medal for courageous activity for rescuing a burning woman
and her child, a member of Ladakhi Peak expedition in 2001, participated in Republic
