Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 100 of more than 4.30 for all the courses that I taught, which is an indication of the good teaching methods that I employed. In 2014, for my first time teaching of Engineering Mathematics course, I received comments from my students to reduce my speed of teaching and give more exercises to the students. I realized that this must be due to the many subtopics that the course has, thus I tend to teach them at a fast pace to ensure that I can cover the all syllabus of the course by the end of the semester. Apart from that, I tend to talk fast, thus students might have difficulty understanding my lectures. I took the comment positively and in the coming semesters, I take my own sweet time to teach and talk to the students. I increase the number and diversify the learning activities in class to slow down my pace of teaching. I keep asking them if I am teaching them too fast. I always convince my students that they can stop me anytime if they think that I am teaching them fast and when they have any questions. I also ensure that I prepare the necessary number of questions for exercises, tutorials, or quizzes. In 2016, for Safety and Health in Processing Industries, I received a comment from one of my students that would want me to upload teaching notes before the class. So, that is what I do for the coming semesters, and to date, I do not receive this kind of comment again. But of course, the teaching notes could not cover everything. I will always ask and remind the students to write in the additional information on the same teaching notes that I give them. SHORT SURVEY I have also conducted a short survey to ensure the relevancy of the course taught. For the Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics course, based on the survey, I found that some of the students still can not appreciate the relevance of the course to their degree and future work and that some of them do not understand the fundamentals and principles of this course. Based on this, I suggested to the Department to improve and revise the contents of the course syllabus. After the improvement, the course code was changed to ECH3120. The new syllabus contains less amount of subtopics that are not important and is more relevant to the process and food industry.
Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 101 STUDENT FEEDBACKS IN PutraBLAST Another method of gathering information on my teaching methods was through PutraBLAST system. After teaching a certain course, I will ask the students to leave their feedback anonymously on anything related to the course including content, teaching and learning, and learning materials for future improvement. Anonymous feedback is particularly important for the students to feel safer to provide feedback without fear of me. The students also have the freedom to criticize and express their opinions on the truth of their sentiments. When the truth is at the forefront of feedback, I can leverage that information to genuinely improve my teaching. Furthermore, since I do not want to be influenced by unfavorable remarks, I always start by reading the nice things that my students have to say. Then, I will review the issues of my teaching as well as their recommendations for improvement. For the Fluid Mechanics I course, I gave them tutorial questions to be answered after I completed teaching each chapter. After a week, I will choose a few students to answer different questions from the tutorial on the whiteboard. I will correct the student if the student answers wrongly and will acknowledge the student if the student gets the right answer. Then, I will ask other students in the class if they have problems with the written answers on the board. If yes, I will explain the question and answer in detail. Based on the comments from Fluid Mechanics I course, one of the students suggested conducting a presentation or more accurately explanation session by the respective student who is chosen to answer the particular question on the whiteboard. This is a good suggestion and I will try to incorporate this activity in the coming semester. Apart from that, she/he also commented on more clarifications for the mini-project. This might be because I uploaded the mini-project on PutraBLAST and only explain briefly to them how to get the mini-project done. I thought it was a simple project, thus no detailed explanation was required. This comment reminds me that what we, lecturers think may not be the same as students’ thinking. Thus, I need to always consider the students’ understanding. I will improve my explanation on each of the assignments given in the next semester.
Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 102 ENGINEERING ACCREDITATION COUNCIL EVALUATION PANEL REPORT The Bachelor of Engineering (Process and Food) program offered by our Department is also accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC). The evaluation panel report can be useful to be considered in regard to improving teaching and learning. In 2017, the EAC panels came to our Department as the accreditation procedure. One of their comments was that the Process Control course that I taught was only limited to equipment and no plant-wide control system was taught and the assignment for assessment is mainly on the simple process. Nonetheless, looking back at the teaching and learning for the Process Control course, the Department agreed to rebut back the comment because our external examiner who was Prof. Bala Subramaniam from Ohio State University, USA was satisfied with the course whereby he previously mentioned in his report that the course was ‘Necessary for learning industrial process automation. Relevant information for food plant automation and control.’ In the Process Control course, the students were given a class exercise where there is a simulation to illustrate the concept of plantwide control using a commonly used software by chemical engineers, SIMVIEW. With regard to the assignment, the class was divided into groups and the students were given a problem related to the processing plant to control. Each group has to select a type of specific process, which they need to conduct the modeling, development of transfer function, P&ID, simulation, and tuning for the particular process, as well as performance and robustness analysis. Detail analyses involving all steps in process control and modeling need to be conducted, which comprises the selection of control objectives for the modeling stage until performance and robustness analysis in the development of process control strategy. I believed that it is very important for lecturers to study the feedback and comments before reacting to them because the feedback and comments are highly subjective.
Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 103 EXTERNAL ASSESSOR REPORT The views of external assessors are also considered in the improvement of my teaching and learning. Renowned professors from reputable universities have assessed and evaluated the examination papers for each course including the tests and final exam. For example, from July 29th to August 3rd 2022, our external assessor, Prof. Ashim K. Datta from Cornell University, USA came to the Department to evaluate our program for the academic year 2020-2021. He evaluated examination papers for the Process Control course and seemed to be satisfied with them. The external assessor's feedbacks are very important to ensure that the teaching and learning are adequate and are within the international standards for engineering programs. LOGBOOK The logbook is to record the progress of the students, from the start of research or industrial training until the completion of the thesis or industrial report. All my postgraduate and undergraduate students whom I supervised are required to have logbooks and record each meeting regarding the progress of their work. The logbook ensures all information related to their work is recorded logically. The logbook keeps the information in one place including supporting documents. The logbook is a way for me to monitor the students under my supervision and identify ways to improve their work. At the same time, the information can also be used for me to reflect on my supervision of the students.
Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 104 DISCUSSIONS WITH FORMER STUDENTS Another method of gathering information on my teaching and supervision methods is through discussions with my former students. Their feedbacks are important for me to reflect and improve on my teaching and supervision. When the students are no longer enrolled in my classes and no longer under my supervision, the students tend to be more honest. The students will offer information without any fear of the consequences. The fear of consequences is what stops most of the students from giving real feedback including the good and the bad ones. I really appreciate all their comments and feedback and have used them to enhance my teaching, assessment, and supervision methods. 5.2 Professional Development in Teaching, Supervision, and Assessment For my professional development in teaching, supervision, and assessment, I have participated in a variety of training, seminar, workshop, and conference. I managed to improve my teaching, supervision, and assessment of the students based on the knowledge obtained from the training, seminars, and workshops. My confidence level has constantly increased over the years, and so do the effectiveness of my teaching, supervision, and assessment. The following are the training, seminars, and workshops that I have attended related to teaching and assessment. Scholarship in Teaching, Supervision, and Evaluation 6.1 Knowledge and Practice Sharing on Teaching, Supervision, and Evaluation at Various Levels (International/National/University) 6.1.1 Media Social YOUTUBE I created my own YouTube channel named Dr. Siti Hajar Othman since the movement control order was imposed in Malaysia in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the YouTube channel was to upload my lecture videos where at that time, the files are very large, and YouTube is the only solution that I can think of. Since then, I have uploaded many lecture videos including for my Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Process Control, and Process and Food Plant Design Project. The lecture videos uploaded include recorded lecture videos prior to class time (asynchronous learning) as well as lecture videos that I recorded from my live online class (synchronous learning), specifically the one that I conducted in Zoom. https://www.youtube.com/@dr.sitihajarothman9098/ I used to set the visibility to unlisted whereby the videos can only be seen and shared by anyone with the link, particularly students from my class. Now, realizing the importance of knowledge sharing at various levels including international, and national, I have set the visibility of the videos to the public. My students seemed to like having me upload lecture videos because according to them, they can watch them at their own pace of time and rewatch the videos if needed to refresh their knowledge of the subjects.

Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 134 MAYBANK ACADEMY Urban farming can lower down energy consumption necessary to transport, package, and sell food by providing the opportunity to utilize food that was grown locally within the community. However, some wonder if they could find the time to do urban farming when they have day jobs. An initiative by UPM and Maybank Academy hopes to change people’s perspectives on this. Maybank Academy launched an Urban Farming program in promoting a stronger community interdependence with the help of experts from UPM under the Ministry of Education’s CEO@Faculty program 2.0. During the program, I was one of the CEO@Faculty program 2.0 fellows, attached with Maybank. I was appointed as the Principal Leader to represent UPM for this project. The project was started in late December 2017 at Maybank Academy where a group of Maybank Academy staff spent their time weekly learning to sow the seeds, transplanting, and taking care of a few types of vegetables like Pak Choy, Chinese kale, and water spinach. The vegetable was grown in a small area at their office compound in Bangi, Selangor; with automatic drip fertigation, vertical pots, and vermicomposting system developed by UPM’s agricultural and chemical engineering staff as well as UPM students under my leadership. The automatic drip fertigation system provides nutrient solutions to around 400 plants grown vertically in pots in less than 100 sqft; according to their needs at preset times. The food waste from the academy’s cafeteria was utilized to produce organic fertilizer for the plants using the vermicomposting system. Vermicomposting uses specially bred worms to aerate the soil and convert organic matter from food waste into compost. We taught them how to take care of the farm, particularly the fertigation, vertical pots, and vermicomposting system.
Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 135 The vegetables were harvested in three weeks intervals and were donated to Sungai Ramal’s Loving Home with the help of an NGO. Maybank makes this urban farming program as part of the core value learning curriculum for Maybank employees in their effort towards sustainable community building, while we from UPM conducted this program on Corporate Social Responsibility to transfer the knowledge for sustainable urban environment in the local community. I also share my knowledge on teaching, learning, and supervision related to urban farming with the Maybank Academy staff so that they can continue the program without help from us. The Maybank Academy staffs continue to work and transfer knowledge on urban farming to other employees even after the program was completed, proving that the knowledge transfer was successful and that good teaching, supervision, and evaluation methods by the Principal Leader from Maybank, as taught by us.
Teaching Portfolio Ir. Dr. Siti Hajar Othman ENGINEERING CLUSTER https://anyflip.com/nqoxw/nvrc/ 136 6.1.4 Laboratory Manual/Book Chapter/Article LABORATORY MANUAL In terms of the learning modules, I help my Department to revise and improve the current laboratory manuals for the Process and Food Engineering Laboratory courses. The laboratory manuals are text, document, or book that helps students, demonstrators, and lab coordinators understand what needs to be done in the laboratory. The laboratory manuals prescribes everything from the procedures that need to be performed to the etiquette that needs to be followed. A good laboratory manual must meet a broad range of objectives that include how to conduct experiments, information on the subject matters, as well as closed and open-ended problems. To ensure the effectiveness of laboratory manuals, their continuous revision with the goal of achieving a more effective laboratory experience for students should be the top priority. BOOK CHAPTER I have also co-authored a book chapter with my colleagues. Writing a book chapter is a good way for me into alternative modes of academic writing. The Editors invited us to contribute a book chapter for their book. This book chapter can become a guide for teaching, learning, and supervision of other lecturers, supervisors, and others.
