By REBECCA LEE [email protected] IPOH, Wednesday: A pupil from SK Murni had a scare of his life when he found a python coiled around his legs. Reggie had just returned home from tuition. He was very tired. He had lots of homework to do, but all he wanted to do was to have a relaxing evening at home. He quickly opened the door with the key. There was no one at home although it was 5 p.m. He plopped down on the sofa and turned on the TV. His eyes began to droop and soon he was fast asleep. Suddenly, Reggie felt like his legs were being squeezed. He opened his eyes and was shocked to see a huge python coiling around his legs. He tried to free himself but it held him tight. “I was confused and frightened as there was no one at home,” said Reggie. However, he was lucky as he was able to reach for the cordless phone. He quickly dialled 999 for help and told the person his problem. By that time, the python was slithering upwards towards his face. Soon, Reggie heard a siren. He felt relieved as help was on its way. Two firefighters broke open the door. They were armed with snake tongs. They jabbed the sides of the python. Slowly, the python began to loosen its grip on Reggie and slithered away. The firefighters quickly caught it and put it in a sack. It will be sent to the zoo. Reggie’s parents came home as soon as they were informed by the neighbours. “All I wanted to do was to have a bath and sleep,” said Reggie. “It was frightening and disgusting coming face-to-face with a python.” Word Meaning 1 droop curling 2 coiling moving on the belly 3 confused feeling unpleasant 4 slithering close slowly 5 disgusting not able to think carefully It’s an Emergency! Tuesday, 9th April Today is the eve of Hari Raya. I am at my grandparents’ village. I got up very early this morning. After having our pre-dawn meal, my father, uncles and I went into the jungle.[B1]We were armed with parang to cut bamboos for the lemang. I didn’t use to follow them when I was little. Next, my siblings and I went to the chicken coop to catch chickens for the delicious chicken rendang. It was very tiring but full of excitement. We rounded up the chickens at one corner of the coop and then, it was action time. A sense of achievement was felt by the sibling with the highest number of chickens. It was pure disappointment for the sibling who caught none. I used to feel sad when I wasn’t able to catch any. Now, I just enjoy the fun moments. Later at night, we helped to put up the new curtains.[B3]As there were many windows, this task used to take us a long time. Now, we complete the task quite quickly. Then, we lit oil lamps in the house compound. Tomorrow is Hari Raya Aidilfitri. It is a time of great enjoyment.[B4]I can’t wait to follow my father to the mosque in the morning and later, visit my relatives and friends! Thank you for visiting my blog! Today, I got up at 6.30 a.m. – not my usual time, though. Today, I did something I’ve never done before. I went bungee jumping. As soon as I reached the venue, I was amazed. I’ve never seen such a beautiful view before. Sparrow Bridge is 120 metres high. This is the bridge I was jumping from! I was beginning to get nervous – there were butterflies in my tummy! My heart began to beat loudly. The instructor came and spoke to me but I did not understand whatever he had spoken as I was not listening to him. I was afraid as I’ve never done this before. I watched the other participants. They must all be scared. When it was my turn to jump, I went to the front. The instructor secured the safety rope. I closed my eyes and jumped. I felt like I was falling into a bottomless pit. After a while, I slowly opened my eyes. I was in mid-air. I made it! It was a feeling of joy and excitement that I’ve never experienced before. [1] I had always been afraid of creepy crawlies such as maggots, worms and even spiders! So, when I saw a poster on ‘Fear Factor for Children’, I decided to participate. I wanted to get the fear of creepy crawlies out of me. [2] There were ten red balls in a glass tank filled with spiders. My task was to retrieve all the balls from the tank. [3] I felt so afraid at first. Gingerly, I put my hand into the tank. [4] The spiders quickly crawled on my hand. I screamed and pulled my hand back! [5] I took a deep breath and reminded myself that I had to overcome my fear. This time I put my hand in and started collecting the balls. I focused on collecting the balls and forgot about the spiders in the tank. I managed to collect all the balls within three minutes. [6] I was so pleased with myself. I overcame my fear of creepy crawlies by staying focused on my aim. Make questions for the following answers. 1 Where does the story take place? The story takes place in the Pride Lands. 2 Who is Simba? Simba is the newborn cub of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi. 3 Why does Scar plot to kill Simba? Scar plots to kill Simba because he realises he cannot be the heir to the throne. 4 What happens to Scar in the end? Scar is attacked and clawed to death by the hyenas. The Lion King takes place in the Pride Lands, where a lion rules over the other animals as king. Simba is the newborn cub of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi. Simba is to be the new heir to the throne. Mufasa’s younger brother, Scar, is furious that he will no longer be the heir to the throne. So, he plots to kill Simba. One day, Scar tricks Simba and gets the hyenas to kill him. Fortunately, Simba is rescued by Mufasa. Scar further plots by promising the hyenas that if he becomes king, they will “never go hungry again”. He gathers more hyenas, forming an army. Then, Scar lures Simba into a ravine for a “surprise from his father”. He then signals the hyenas to go down into the ravine where Simba is. Once again, Mufasa races to rescue Simba from the hyenas. He saves his son, but unfortunately, he dies in the fight. However, Scar convinces Simba that he is responsible for his own father’s death, and advises him to run away from the Pride Lands, never to return. Scar once again sends the hyenas to kill Simba, but Simba manages to escape. Scar happily informs the pride that both Mufasa and Simba are killed by the hyenas, and that he is taking over the throne as he is the closest relative of the king. Simba returns after Scar strikes his mother. He forces Simba over the edge of Pride Rock, just as a lightning bolt starts a fire below. As Simba dangles over the edge of Pride Rock, Scar whispers to Simba that he killed Mufasa. Enraged, Simba leaps up and pins Scar to the ground, forcing him to admit the truth to the pride. Scar pretends to leave but turns to attack Simba, resulting in a final fight. Simba eventually wins over his uncle by flipping him and kicking him over a low cliff. Scar survives the fall, but finds himself surrounded by hyenas. The hyenas attack him and claw him to death. She dislikes a desk job, though. She wanted to work as and when she wanted. So, she joined Yummy Chocolates. Do you know what she does? She eats chocolates! Seriously! She is a chocolate taster! Her work is to taste all the chocolates made – checking for flavour and quality. Amazing, right? She is paid handsomely, too. She earns RM500 a day and she works three times a week. I have silk clothes and silk bedsheets as well as silk pillowcases. They are so soft and cool. I like to look at my reflection in the mirror when I put on my silk clothes. I look cool in them. In fact, I have a big collection of silk clothes. Silk is a unique creation. Do you know that it is made from worms? Silkworms actually! At first, I was shocked to find out that silk comes from worms! Ugh…! But, my perception of silkworms changed when I found out how silk is made. A piece of silk begins its journey from the female silk moth that lays between 300 and 500 eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the silkworms continually eat mulberry leaves for six weeks. Then, the silkworm spins a silk cocoon between three and eight days. A silkworm produces a single strand of silk measuring 100 metres long! The silkworms are then placed in boiling water to soften the gum that holds the cocoon together. Next, the silk threads are dyed with various colours. Once the threads are dried, they have to be flattened before they can be made into fabric. This process is called spinning. Then, the threads are woven into materials that we can buy from the store. Silk is comfortable and does not cause any skin irritation. So, it is good for people who have eczema, skin allergies and infections.
